I t’s been well publicised that 2024 was a big year for elections , with billions of people in at least 60 countries going to the polls . The year started with votes in the world’s largest country, India, and is ending in the wake of an annulled election in Romania over accusations of Russian interference. As a data correspondent, I spent most of this year covering what were arguably the two most influential polls: the UK general election in July, and the US presidential election in November. From an outside glance, the two electoral events had little in common; not least because Sir Keir Starmer and President-elect Donald Trump are far apart in most aspects of their character. In the UK, Labour won by a landslide ; a majority of 156 seats, and a 10 per cent majority in national vote share. In the US, Trump dominated the electoral college , but in the end won just a 1.6 per cent national majority over Kamala Harris. Indeed, these elections shared some key similarities which may point to trends in the future of global politics, particularly in the digital age. Before comparing the common characteristics of the UK and US elections , we must acknowledge that the choice of leaders is what largely sets them apart. This summer, Brits ushered in a moderate left-wing government led by a man who, for all his undeniable achievements , was suggested to be “too boring” to be Prime Minister . The picture across the pond is almost a total opposite. Trump was elected to a second term - a right-wing candidate who is credited with pushing Republicans further right, and whose actions over the years can be described as many things but not boring. Their backgrounds are also a point of difference. Sir Keir proudly waved his working-class roots as the son of a toolmaker, who diligently climbed the legal ladder and reached the head of the Crown Prosecution Service. Famously, Trump r eceived “a small loan of a million dollars” from his own mogul father, which the president-elect developed into a business career spanning from a real estate empire, to hosting The Apprentice, and the short-lived Trump University. Both individuals, of distinct backgrounds and skills, were chosen by their electorate to be leaders. One embodies the rule of law, while the other rejects (or indeed, bulldozes) the institutional rulebook. To some degree at least, both reflect the values of their electorate. On both sides of the pond, this year’s elections represented some degree of a win for the right. In the US, Republicans swept the Executive, Congress and Senate. In the UK, the Conservatives’ fall from grace made way for a “new” right. Men have typically been considered a key support base for Trump, but this year, this extended to the younger generation too. Nearly half of men under aged 18-30 voted for Trump, according to AP VoteCast; up from a third in 2020. Yet for some time, Trump was not the only option available to more Conservative voters. Until mid-July, Robert F Kennedy Jr. was performing unprecedentedly well in the polls , hovering between 9 and 10 per cent of the vote. When Kamala Harris entered the race, his polling popularity split in half, but RFK Jr was still maintaining a healthy 5 per cent of vote intention. With the election considered to be on a knife’s edge, this percentage could have made the difference for either major candidate. His supporters were made up of both traditionally liberal and conservative voters , who may have been united by a frustration with the status quo. But ultimately, RFK Jr endorsed Trump, aligning himself with the political right - and possibly securing himself a position as Health Secretary . Meanwhile in the UK, left-wing Labour won by a landslide, with a crippling historic defeat for the Tories at just 121 seats in Parliament. But all was not lost for the political right. Nigel Farage’s right-wing party Reform UK also broke through the fray by winning five seats, above most expectations. Overall, men also swung farther to Reform (by +15 per cent) than women (+11 per cent); with wins among all male age groups, from men under 24 (9 per cent) to over 55s+ (20 per cent), according to the Ipsos exit poll. More pressingly, Reform won 14.3 per cent of the national vote share ; just a few points behind the Tories (23.8 per cent). Whether this momentum can be sustained into the next election remains to be seen. This could, however, set the stage for a new form of the UK’s political right, which has been dominated by the Conservatives for over a century. Labour in the UK and the Democrats in the US waged very different campaigns; and namely, Sir Keir’s party won the election, while Ms Harris’ lost. Yet both major left-wing parties lost support from one of their key demographics: minority voters. In the UK, the Independent revealed that Labour lost nearly a third of its existing support from Black and Asian voters compared to the 2019 election. The ethnic minority Labour vote dropped from 64 per cent to 46 per cent; despite Labour’s overall success. In fact, +13 per cent more ethnic minority voters chose Independent candidates this year, compared to a boost of just + 2 per cent among white voters. Jabeer Butt, chief executive of the Race Equality Foundation, pointed to a weak stance on the war in Gaza and Labour’s internal race rows as a reason for this disillusionment. “It should concern Labour that they have not only lost votes from Asian communities, but they have lost seats [to Independents],” he told the Independent. In the United States, Democrats lost favour with the core Latino voter group , leading to a nearly even split between Harris-Trump support. NBC’s exit polls showed that Harris won 53 per cent of the Latino vote to Trump’s 45 per cent; a far cry from Biden’s 33-point lead among Latinos in 2020. Though the extent of concerns about a substantial shift to the right among Black voters appeared to be overblown, 1 in 5 Black men did vote for Trump (an increase of 2 per cent from 2020, and up 7 per cent from 2016). This specifically represented a growing divide between Black women (7 per cent of whom voted for Trump) and Black men; with some commentators arguing that a shift to the right among Black men was inevitable , due to culturally conservative and economically liberal traits. Gaza also played a part in the US election. The Uncommitted campaign urged voters to withhold their votes from the Democrats, as an act of protest against Biden’s approach to the war in Gaza. While it is impossible to say how many non-votes were decided for this reason, there is one place it certainly made a difference. Dearborn, Michigan was considered a Democratic stronghold with a 55 per cent Arab population. This year, Trump won the city by 2,500 votes; the first time a Republican has won since 2000. Harris lost a third of the Dearborn vote from Joe Biden in 2020 (down to 36 per cent from 69 per cent), while third-party candidate Jill Stein took 15 per cent of the vote in the city. In both the UK and US, then, Labour and Democrats lost favour with minority voters, for a variety of reasons. Plus, the Raiders had a short week to prepare for the Chiefs, meaning O’Connell only went through a series of walk-through practices. (TNS) — The Scranton Fire Department’s newest tool is about to take flight. The department purchased three drones — technically classified as unmanned aerial vehicles, or UAVs — over the summer for just under $20,000, and received them about a month and a half ago, Fire Chief John Judge said. The Fire Department’s fire inspectors, a captain and its emergency management specialist are training to pilot the drones and take certification tests through the Federal Aviation Administration, he said. Judge anticipates most of them having their certification by the end of the year. The Fire Department joins the Scranton Police Department in adding drones to its tool kit. City police received their first drone in 2016 as a donation from Pennsylvania Paper & Supply Co. Judge envisions using the drones to inspect hazardous buildings, at fires, HAZMAT incidents, Nay Aug Gorge and during floods. He pointed to the usefulness of a drone to gather intelligence during emergencies like the large brush fire this week on Montage Mountain. “That’s really what it’s about — being able to gather some more data for us to be able to make informed decisions while we’re putting our strategies and tactics together, whether it’s an incident that we’re on or whether we’re pre-planning something,” Judge said. “The drones just give us a unique and different view of the landscape we might be working in.” The Fire Department spent several years researching drones and talking to other departments that already use them, Judge said. One decision was to figure out whether to get one expensive drone with “all the bells and whistles on it” or to instead buy multiple, less-expensive drones for redundancy and different applications, Judge said. The department ultimately decided to get three DJI Mavic 3T Enterprise drones. DJI advertises its Mavic 3T drones as having both wide angle and zoom cameras, including 56x zoom, as well as a thermal imaging camera. The thermal imaging cameras will allow firefighters to see hot spots coming through the roof during large building fires — something that’s especially useful if they are unable to safely access certain sections of a building due to damage, he said. “This UAV is going to keep our personnel and staff, hopefully, out of harm’s way when we’re just trying to do some reconnaissance and be able to get some information to make some informed decisions while we’re developing our strategies and our tactics,” Judge said. With city firefighters often dispatched to Nay Aug Gorge during the summer as people illegally dive into the churning waters, Judge said the drones will allow them to search the shorelines more easily rather than sending first responders over the rough terrain. In addition to giving firefighters the ability to develop a quicker operational picture, Judge said the drones and their detailed cameras also will help city engineers and code enforcement officials to assess the aftermath of a fire by showing them areas of damaged buildings that could be otherwise inaccessible. “Now you have a drone that’s not in harm’s way rather than putting city engineers or code enforcement officials or fire inspectors in harm’s way,” he said. Overall, the drones will give fire officials information to make decisions rather than guessing or relying on past experience, Judge said, explaining the Fire Department’s goal is to mitigate incidents quickly in order to limit the loss of life and property. “Anytime you’re able to do that, that’s going to affect the health and safety of our emergency responders,” he said. “Just as importantly, it’s going to affect our ability to hopefully save lives or identify people that are in peril and then mitigate that incident quicker.” Like Judge, Mayor Paige Gebhardt Cognetti pointed to the utility of drones during emergencies, both as a way of getting eyes on a situation right away and in its aftermath. For example, if there’s a flood, the city could use the drones and the footage they record to more quickly and accurately survey damage and apply for emergency funds, she said. “So, huge range of uses, from the very immediate life-saving uses to getting funds for the city in the case of the aftermath of emergencies,” she said. “It shows Chief Judge and Deputy Chief (Dan) Hallowich’s continued modernization of the department and forward thinking.” With both the police and fire departments using drones, Cognetti said it shows that Scranton is using technology to save lives and save money. “Saving lives is always the primary goal, but making sure that we are efficient with taxpayer dollars and utilizing the latest technology within our budget is important to our administration,” she said. “You see from the investments we’ve made that our chiefs in the Fire Department and the Police Department are focused on that.” ©Swanson: Galaxy coaches share a rich legacy, but their focus is on the nowBecause of the career choices that I made in life, the professional and personal circles that I run around in tend to be composed of those who would rather have a piece of wood as president over Donald Trump. I remember in 2016 when Trump beat Hillary Clinton to win his first term how many of those around me reacted so extremely. Some were appalled and disgusted. Most were deeply concerned and anxious about the damage Trump could do to our country. We had many discussions where I attempted to argue that the impact that Trump’s presidency would have on the average American would likely be negligible. I argued that they were being excessively apocalyptic and fearful. As predicted, life went on. Unless you insisted on waiting with bated breath to be appalled by the next outrageous thing that Trump said on Twitter or on the podium, everyday life just didn’t change much for the vast majority of people. The extent to which what happens in the capital affects us is sometimes significantly inflated by our own expectations and emotional responses. Similarly to Trump’s recent campaign, in 2016 he also ran on being tough on immigration. Despite his promises, all of the many illegals that I know continued their peacefully illegal lives undisturbed – some even visited their families in Mexico, only to once again very gracefully cha-cha their way past the best efforts of the Border Patrol. Forgive my abuse of anecdotal evidence, I can’t help myself. For what it’s worth, Obama deported many more people than Trump. On the other hand, it would be a departure from reality to claim that federal politics play no significant role in our lives. If it wasn’t for Trump, we would still have nationwide access to abortion, among other things. Those living in states with heavy restrictions on abortion can go to another state to undergo the procedure. It’s an annoyance and an unnecessary burden that no woman should have to shoulder, but it’s a temporary one. Some court decision or some act of Congress will inevitably reestablish universal access to abortion. In the meantime, even Republican states are gradually restoring abortion rights. Currently, one of the most prominent sources of outrage with respect to the next Trump administration stems from the choices that he’s making in staffing his cabinet and other positions. What sort of havoc will Robert F. Kennedy Jr. wreak as the head of the Department of Health and Human Services? Will all of our teeth fall out simultaneously after he removes the fluoride from the water? Only time will tell. Pete Hegseth to lead the Pentagon is another bold choice by our future president. He’s completely unqualified and wants to remove women from positions of combat, being the chivalrous gentleman that he is. Will his appointment have any impact at all on our lives? But this constant obsession about what is going on in government is counterproductive to our health and wellbeing. The vast majority of the time, what politicians decide to do has very little appreciable impact on us, particularly when compared to everything else that is going on in our lives. It makes it so much more perplexing that many allow their mental lives to be disproportionately consumed by the poor decisions of the government. There are countless stories out there of individuals shunning their loved ones for simply supporting one candidate or another. Many are now considering refusing to attend the same holiday gatherings as their brothers or sisters, all over silly political disagreements. This is a time to appreciate your loved ones despite whatever flaws you believe them to have, so retire the pitchfork and relax a little bit. For decades, spacefaring nations have launched thousands of satellites and other objects into orbit, which have become vital to modern life. However, when these satellites age and stop functioning, ever wondered what happens to them? According to NASA , many fragments or objects of these satellites remain in the ever-expanding space junkyard. These objects continue to float in the low-Earth orbit as they are too expensive to be removed. However, these pose severe threats to future satellites and crewed space missions. Recently, in November, the International Space Station took precautionary action to avoid a piece of space junk. A Russian cargo ship docked at the station fired its thrusters for over five minutes to create extra distance between the ISS and the incoming debris, which came from a defunct meteorological satellite. While the object wasn’t on a direct collision course with the station, NASA deemed the manoeuvre necessary to ensure additional safety as it passed by. All this junk floating around in space can lead to a theoretical scenario which is known as the Kessler Syndrome. Space Junk is the debris comprised of old non-functional satellites and other man-made objects that continue to float in the Earth’s orbit. This space debris includes spacecraft, spent rocket boosters and even astronaut’s tool bags they lost during the mission. Since the space age began in the 1950s, around 50,000 tons of material have been launched into orbit, with over 13,000 tons of space objects currently in space as of September 2024. Of the 19,590 satellites launched since 1957, 13,230 remain in orbit, with 10,200 still operational, according to the European Space Agency which cited the data from the U.S Space Surveillance Network. As of December 2022, the International Space Station had performed 32 manoeuvres to avoid space junk since 1999, according to NASA’s 2022 quarterly report. By October 2023, this number had risen to 37, including two in August of that year. The ISS conducted its 39th Pre-Determined Avoidance Manoeuvre in November of this year. The scientists also revealed that it is not a big deal for the space debris crash on Earth’s surface. A family in Naples, Florida filed a complaint against NASA and demanded $80,000 in damages after a piece of space debris from the International Space Station crashed through their house roof, earlier this year, as reported by USA Today. ESA warned that the increasing space debris could lead to a theoretical scenario turned into reality i.e. the Kessler Syndrome that if left unchecked, the growing accumulation of space debris could lead to a dangerous cascade of collisions. As debris multiplies, it could eventually render Earth's orbit unusable for space travel. Last year, Holger Krag, ESA's head of Space Safety said, “We are seeing a dramatically increased use of space, but still insufficient technology to prevent the risks that follow,” in a statement.
