Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Thursday that the federal government will remove the goods and services tax on a slew of items for two months, starting Dec. 14. But in provinces where the provincial and federal sales taxes are blended together into a harmonized sales tax, Canadians will get a larger break. The federal government also plans to send $250 cheques to Canadians who were working in 2023 and earned up to $150,000. That means Canadians who were not working in 2023, including those who were receiving social assistance or were in retirement, will not be sent a cheque in April. In the House of Commons on Friday, NDP MP Peter Julian called the government out for not including Canadians with fixed incomes. “Why are Liberals excluding seniors and people with disabilities from the real help they need this holiday season? Why won’t Liberals help them, too?” Julian asked during question period. 'Counterintuitive – and dangerous': Agency that fights foreign disinformation may shutter

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. President-elect Donald Trump said on Sunday the 2023 debt ceiling extension agreed by then House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and President Joe Biden will "go down as one of the dumbest political decisions made in years." Under the 2023 budget deal Congress suspended the debt ceiling until Jan. 1, 2025. The U.S. Treasury will be able to pay its bills for several months beyond that deadline, but Congress will have to address the issue, possibly around mid-year. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said, "The extension of the Debt Ceiling by a previous Speaker of the House, a good man and a friend of mine ... will go down as one of the dumbest political decisions made in years." He added, "The Democrats must be forced to take a vote on this treacherous issue NOW, during the Biden Administration, and not in June. They should be blamed for this potential disaster, not the Republicans!" Republicans, however, will control both chambers of Congress beginning on Jan. 3 and at least some of the party's lawmakers would have to go along with a debt limit increase or elimination in order for it to become law. Without the 2023 debt limit increase, the United States would have seen a historic default on its debt payments that would have roiled financial markets worldwide. A debt default would also likely have brought a downgrade in the U.S. credit rating, raising borrowing costs for businesses and individuals. At the time, several far-right Republicans in the House of Representatives had pushed for deeper federal spending cuts as a condition for raising the debt limit than what had been negotiated. About a week ago, with U.S. government discretionary funding due to expire on Dec. 20, Trump, encouraged by billionaire Elon Musk, demanded the debt limit either be eliminated or extended, possibly to 2029 when his presidency would end. The United States Postal Service might have found a way to unite a nation bitterly divided after this month's election: It will release a Betty White stamp. The beloved actor known for roles in "The Golden Girls," "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," "Boston Legal" and others will be on a 2025 Forever stamp, USPS announced this past week. White died in late December 2021 , less than three weeks before her 100th birthday. The Postal Service hasn't announced a release date for the stamp. The lawyer representing Todd Joseph Gallant says he intends to challenge the admissibility of DNA evidence that police have called key to laying charges in the killing of Byron Carr 36 years ago. Gallant was arrested earlier this year, with Charlottetown Police saying DNA evidence collected at the crime scene in 1988 pointed to him. He has been charged with first-degree murder and interfering with human remains. "We're going to bring an application to exclude some evidence, and that's connected to the DNA," Montigny told CBC News after a court appearance at the Supreme Court of Prince Edward Island on Tuesday. Carr, 36, was teaching English at Montague Regional High School at the time of his death. He was strangled with a towel in his Charlottetown home in the early morning hours of Nov. 11, 1988, and his body was eventually discovered with multiple stab wounds. After 35 years, DNA evidence leads to 1st-degree murder charge in P.E.I. cold case A timeline of the night Byron Carr was murdered Investigators have long said they believe Carr had consensual sex with a young man he brought home, and presumed that person was his killer. Police re-opened the case in 2007, hoping advancements in DNA technology would give way to new leads, particularly on biological evidence gathered from underwear found at Carr's home. Byron Carr was 36 years old at the time of his death. His case had gone cold before police say a familial DNA match led police to arrest Todd Joseph Gallant. (CBC) That DNA sample was used to create a genetic profile, and then genetic genealogy was used to match DNA from the crime scene to Gallant, who had left P.E.I. shortly after Carr's murder and returned to the province in 2022. "[The evidentiary motion is] really just to see if the search and seizure was lawful or not," Montigny said. "Parties have agreed that it makes sense to do this first as opposed to waiting closer to the trial date." Pre-trial conversations continue Gallant was not in court Tuesday, but both Montigny and Crown attorney Chris White told the court in Charlottetown that they have been meeting in a series of pre-trial conferences that will continue next week.
