Investor Warren Buffett renewed his Thanksgiving tradition of giving by handing out more than $1.1 billion of Berkshire Hathaway stock to four of his family's foundations Monday, and he offered new details about who will be handing out the rest of his fortune after his death. Buffett has said previously that his three kids will distribute his remaining $147.4 billion fortune in the 10 years after his death, but now he has also designated successors for them because it's possible that Buffett's children could die before giving it all away. He didn't identify the successors, but said his kids all know them and agree they would be good choices. "Father time always wins. But he can be fickle – indeed unfair and even cruel – sometimes ending life at birth or soon thereafter while, at other times, waiting a century or so before paying a visit," the 94-year-old Buffett said in a letter to his fellow shareholders Monday. "To date, I've been very lucky, but, before long, he will get around to me. There is, however, a downside to my good fortune in avoiding his notice. The expected life span of my children has materially diminished since the 2006 pledge. They are now 71, 69 and 66." Buffett said he still has no interest in creating dynastic wealth in his family — a view shared by his first and current wives. He acknowledged giving Howard, Peter and Susie millions over the years, but he has long said he believes "hugely wealthy parents should leave their children enough so they can do anything but not enough that they can do nothing." The secret to building up such massive wealth over time has been the power of compounding interest and the steady growth of the Berkshire conglomerate Buffett leads through acquisitions and smart investments like buying billions of dollars of Apple shares as iPhone sales continued to drive growth in that company. Kennedy was assassinated , conspiracy theories still swirl and any new glimpse into the fateful day of Nov. 22, 1963, in Dallas continues to fascinate . President-elect Donald Trump promised during his reelection campaign that he would declassify all of the remaining government records surrounding the assassination if he returned to office. He made a similar pledge during his first term, but ultimately bended to appeals from the CIA and FBI to keep some documents withheld. At this point, only a few thousand of the millions of governmental records related to the assassination have yet to be fully released, and those who have studied the records released so far say that even if the remaining files are declassified, the public shouldn't anticipate any earth-shattering revelations. “Anybody waiting for a smoking gun that’s going to turn this case upside down will be sorely disappointed,” said Gerald Posner, author of “Case Closed,” which concludes that assassin Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. Friday's 61st anniversary is expected to be marked with a moment of silence at 12:30 p.m. in Dealey Plaza, where Kennedy's motorcade was passing through when he was fatally shot. And throughout this week there have been events marking the anniversary. When Air Force One carrying Kennedy and first lady Jacqueline Kennedy touched down in Dallas , they were greeted by a clear sky and enthusiastic crowds. Of those documents, some are still completely redacted while others just have small redactions, like someone's Social Security number. But it might not help beleaguered Vertex stock. The drug will sell under the brand name, Alyftrek. It will treat patients age 6 and older with specific genetic mutations tied to the lung disease. The approval comes roughly two weeks ahead of time and follows a major setback Thursday for Vertex's pain drug. Vertex stock slumped 11% after the non-opioid pain drug showed little difference from a placebo in a midstage test. RBC Capital Markets analyst Brian Abrahams noted analysts largely expected the approval. "Importantly, today's early approval also avoids any potential delays from a potentially drawn-out Federal government shutdown," he said in a report. "As we had anticipated, Alyftrek will be priced at a premium to Trikafta." Trikafta is Vertex Pharmaceuticals' biggest moneymaker. It's another triple drug that treats cystic fibrosis. But on Christmas Eve, volunteers in Colorado Springs are fielding questions like, “When is Santa coming to my house?” and, “Am I on the naughty or nice list?” “There are screams and giggles and laughter,” said Bob Sommers, 63, a civilian contractor and NORAD volunteer. Sommers often says on the call that everyone must be asleep before Santa arrives, prompting parents to say, “Do you hear what he said? We got to go to bed early.” NORAD’s annual tracking of Santa has endured since the Cold War , predating ugly sweater parties and Mariah Carey classics . Here’s how it began and why the phones keep ringing. It started with a child’s accidental phone call in 1955. In 2014, tech news site Gizmodo cited an International News Service story from Dec. 1, 1955, about a child’s call to Shoup. Published in the Pasadena Independent, the article said the child reversed two digits in the Sears number. “When a childish voice asked COC commander Col. Harry Shoup, if there was a Santa Claus at the North Pole, he answered much more roughly than he should — considering the season: ‘There may be a guy called Santa Claus at the North Pole, but he’s not the one I worry about coming from that direction,’” Shoup said in the brief piece. In 2015, The Atlantic magazine doubted the flood of calls to the secret line, while noting that Shoup had a flair for public relations. Phone calls aside, Shoup was indeed media savvy. In 1986, he told the Scripps Howard News Service that he recognized an opportunity when a staff member drew Santa on the glass map in 1955. A lieutenant colonel promised to have it erased. It will be responsible to raise funds for the “Clean Sri Lanka” fund and provide the necessary instructions and guidance to manage the “Clean Sri Lanka” fund as required. It will also identify programs implemented in concurrence with this program by various stakeholders such as Government institutions, private sector, international organisations and institutions, non-Governmental organisations and align them with the “Clean Sri Lanka” program. The Task Force is also mandated to identify and formulate legal provisions required to ensure the sustainability of the outcomes of this program and establish an institutional framework to which the responsibility for enforcing such laws and rules in the long term is conferred upon. It will also leverage digitalisation to plan, guide, implement, review the progress and sustainably continue this program and develop and implement a multi-mode communication strategy to positively influence and engage all stakeholders. The Task Force is authorised to make inquiries and issue instructions as required for the purpose of executing the tasks so entrusted, and also to obtain the assistance of the public officers from whom such assistance is intended by the Presidential Task Force. The rational for the Task Force and the “Clean Sri Lanka” program, as per the Gazette is that the people of Sri Lanka have become victims in the context of Sri Lanka lagging behind not only economically but also politically, socially, culturally and ethically, the people’s aspirations to take the country towards a new renaissance by changing the situation that they have experienced thus far has been clearly reflected in the recent election results. An approach to make behavioural changes in society can be achieved by role modelling, influencing, providing guidance, and strongly emphasising the need for change, the Government has recognised the need to implement a systematic program to steer the society towards progress and the Government believes that such changes make a decisive impact on the economic development of the country as well. Additional the Government recognises that it is essential to launch a national operation targeting a social, environmental and ethical awakening in the country, as well as fulfilling a transformative initiative ensuring the wellbeing, harmony and progress of the people of this country in line with the vision of “A Thriving Nation, A Beautiful Life.” The Government believes that a transformative initiative is required to be launched to strengthen the environmental, economic and social sustainability and the state machinery, and the present Government has been entrusted with an unavoidable responsibility to act accordingly.
