Dillon's holiday celebrations will kick off Friday, Dec. 6, with the annual Parade of Lights, Christmas Stroll and Festival of Trees family night. The Festival of Trees is a two-day fundraising holiday event where the proceeds directly benefit Dillon-area groups; the Christmas Stroll and Parade of Lights kick off the holiday season and support downtown Dillon businesses. The Festival of Trees has raised over $400,000 in the past two decades for nonprofit organizations in the area. This year's Festival of Trees proceeds will benefit Beaverhead Meals on Wheels and the Elks Lodge, President Mary Rouse said. The decision was especially hard this year for the committee, she said, adding she hopes those that were not chosen will reapply next year. Rouse noted Meals on Wheels stood out from the pack based on the growth of the program and how its volunteers ensure seniors are fed and safe. Meals on Wheels is maxed out at serving 55 meals a day to residents in Dillon and Beaverhead County, she said, and a wait list is expected in the future, considering the need. "(Meals on Wheels) might be the only time senior citizens are seeing another person," she said. "And if the driver doesn't get an answer at the door, they do a welfare check on the client. They are not only serving meals, but making sure people are safe." The meals are prepared at the University of Montana Western, and the organization needs financial assistance to ensure the continuation of the program. The Elks Lodge was chosen due to its community impact, Rouse said. The organization opens its doors for community events at a sliding-scale cost, and has been an essential partner for a number of groups in town. "The Elks are really important to Dillon, because of all the benefits they offer," she said. The Elks need to rehabilitate their 100-year-old building to allow for those group gatherings to continue, she said. The Festival of Trees family night begins at 5 p.m. Dec. 6 at the Elks Lodge. The Shine Studio dancers will perform at 5:30 p.m. There will be a silent auction that night for a number of smaller decorated trees, and childrens' raffle games. The larger decorated trees will be on display and up for auction at the gala, which begins at 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7 at the University of Montana Western Lewis & Clark room. There will be both silent and live auctions available. Tickets are on sale at The Bookstore in downtown Dillon. Monetary donations for the Festival of Trees can be sent to P.O. Box 941, Dillon, MT 59725. "The Festival of Trees group greatly appreciates the continued support of Dillon and the surrounding area," Rouse added. The annual Parade of Lights kicks off the Christmas Stroll at 6 p.m. Dec. 6 in front of the Beaverhead County Courthouse on Bannack Street. This year's theme is "American Country Christmas." The parade will follow the usual route, from Bannack to Idaho, Idaho to Center, Center to Montana, Montana to Idaho, and Idaho back down Bannack Street. The judges stand will be at the corner of Bannack and Idaho streets this year. There will be a bouncy house, cocoa and prizes in front of the WayPoint Church at the corner of Center and Montana streets. There will be an ice sculpture exhibition, hot soup and cookie decorating at the corner of Idaho and Sebree streets in front of the First Baptist Church and Bank of Commerce. Senior students in Surrey high schools will get a chance to take online classes next school year, in the board's latest strategy to free up classroom space. "Hybrid learning is a blend of face-to-face and online learning for students and in our context, for kids in the senior Grades 10, 11 and 12," explained Perry Smith, assistant superintendent for Guildford-area schools. Exploring hybrid learning is motivated by a "capital crunch" trustee Bob Holmes says the district is facing, as student enrolment outpaces available school space. While the permanent implementation of hybrid classes would be new, students got a taste for the model during the pandemic years when schools were running classes virtually. As well, teachers became accustomed to the model and likely have learned lessons to improve on this time around, district staff suggested. "We identified many benefits of hybrid learning in our secondary schools," Smith said, pointing to research on the topic to support the claim. The superintendent explained that students will have a choice of going home for their online blocks, staying at school in shared spaces or being out in the community, for example, at a library. For those students who do not have access to internet services or personal electronic devices, technology will be provided so the opportunity is more inclusive, Smith said. He added that the district would receive a grant to make this possible. "While there is a side benefit for students to get ready for the 21st century, as previous speakers have mentioned, the reality is that this was driven because we have such a shortage of space," chair Gary Tymoschuk said. The issue of overcrowding in Surrey Schools can be seen at nearly every school, with trustee Laurie Larsen noting Walnut Road Elementary, that is set to receive a prefabricated module. "They have had one playground for 800 students because the other playground has been cordoned off, they have no greenspace, they have no adequate parking for parents, visitors or for staff. Staff are double parking so they all have to know which teacher is in front of them so they can let them know when they have to leave," Larsen said. The trustee added that prefabs do not provide everything. "We appreciate the modulars, I don’t want to say that we don’t but the modulars do only give the classroom," Larsen said. "They don’t give the gym space, they don’t give any extra outdoor space, they don’t give any library space and especially for the gym so in that school, they have to have three assemblies for every event.. because the gym is too small and the occupancy is just over 300 people." Walnut Road also has nine portables on school site and with the addition of the modulars, whether those portables will remain on site is still unknown. According to the board, affording to relocate the portables may be a challenge. Staff recommended for the board to approve the implementation of up to three senior level courses in a hybrid learning model at secondary schools as a trial for next school year, available on an optional basis. WASHINGTON (AP) — For years, Pat Verhaeghe didn’t think highly of Donald Trump as a leader. Then Verhaeghe began seeing more of Trump’s campaign speeches online and his appearances at sporting events. There was even the former president’s pairing with Bryson DeChambeau as part of the pro golfer’s YouTube channel series to shoot an under-50 round of golf while engaging in chitchat with his partner. “I regret saying this, but a while ago I thought he was an idiot and that he wouldn’t be a good president,” said the 18-year-old first-time voter. “I think he’s a great guy now.” Verhaeghe isn't alone among his friends in suburban Detroit or young men across America. Although much of the electorate shifted right to varying degrees in 2024, young men were one of the groups that swung sharply toward Trump. More than half of men under 30 supported Trump, according to AP VoteCast , a survey of more than 120,000 voters, while Democrat Joe Biden had won a similar share of this group four years earlier. White men under 30 were solidly in Trump’s camp this year — about 6 in 10 voted for Trump — while young Latino men were split between the two candidates. Most Black men under 30 supported Democrat Kamala Harris, but about one-third were behind Trump. Young Latino men’s views of the Democratic Party were much more negative than in 2020, while young Black men’s views of the party didn’t really move. About 6 in 10 Latino men under 30 had a somewhat or very favorable view of the Democrats in 2020, which fell to about 4 in 10 this year. On the other hand, about two-thirds of young Black men had a favorable view of the Democrats this year, which was almost identical to how they saw the party four years ago. “Young Hispanic men, and really young men in general, they want to feel valued," said Rafael Struve, deputy communications director for Bienvenido, a conservative group that focused on reaching young Hispanic voters for Republicans this year. “They're looking for someone who fights for them, who sees their potential and not just their struggles.” Struve cited the attempted assassination of Trump during a July rally in Pennsylvania as one of the catalyzing moments for Trump’s image among many young men. Trump, Struve said, was also able to reach young men more effectively by focusing on nontraditional platforms like podcasts and digital media outlets. “Getting to hear from Trump directly, I think, really made all the difference," Struve said of the former president's appearances on digital media platforms and media catering to Latino communities, like town halls and business roundtables Trump attended in Las Vegas and Miami. Not only did Trump spend three hours on Joe Rogan's chart-topping podcast, but he took up DeChambeau's “Break 50” challenge for the golfer's more than 1.6 million YouTube subscribers. Trump already had an edge among young white men four years ago, although he widened the gap this year. About half of white men under 30 supported Trump in 2020, and slightly less than half supported Biden. Trump's gains among young Latino and Black men were bigger. His support among both groups increased by about 20 percentage points, according to AP VoteCast — and their feelings toward Trump got warmer, too. It wasn’t just Trump. The share of young men who identified as Republicans in 2024 rose as well, mostly aligning with support for Trump across all three groups. “What is most alarming to me is that the election is clear that America has shifted right by a lot,” said William He, founder of Dream For America, a liberal group that works to turn out young voters and supported Harris’ presidential bid. With his bombastic demeanor and a policy agenda centered on a more macho understanding of culture , Trump framed much of his campaign as a pitch to men who felt scorned by the country’s economy, culture and political system. Young women also slightly swung toward the former president, though not to the degree of their male counterparts. It's unclear how many men simply did not vote this year. But there's no doubt the last four years brought changes in youth culture and how political campaigns set out to reach younger voters. Democrat Kamala Harris' campaign rolled out policy agendas tailored to Black and Latino men, and the campaign enlisted a range of leaders in Black and Hispanic communities to make the case for the vice president. Her campaign began with a flurry of enthusiasm from many young voters, epitomized in memes and the campaign's embrace of pop culture trends like the pop star Charli XCX's “brat” aesthetic . Democrats hoped to channel that energy into their youth voter mobilization efforts. “I think most young voters just didn’t hear the message,” said Santiago Mayer, executive director of Voters of Tomorrow, a liberal group that engages younger voters. Mayer said the Harris campaign’s pitch to the country was “largely convoluted” and centered on economic messaging that he said wasn’t easily conveyed to younger voters who were not already coming to political media. “And I think that the policies themselves were also very narrow and targeted when what we really needed was a simple, bold economic vision,” said Mayer. Trump also embraced pop culture by appearing at UFC fights, football games and appearing alongside comedians, music stars and social media influencers. His strategists believed that the former president’s ability to grab attention and make his remarks go viral did more for the campaign than paid advertisements or traditional media appearances. Trump's campaign also heavily cultivated networks of online conservative platforms and personalities supportive of him while also engaging a broader universe of podcasts, streaming sites, digital media channels and meme pages open to hearing him. “The right has been wildly successful in infiltrating youth political culture online and on campus in the last couple of years, thus radicalizing young people towards extremism,” said He, who cited conservative activist groups like Turning Point USA as having an outsize impact in online discourse. “And Democrats have been running campaigns in a very old fashioned way. The battleground these days is cultural and increasingly on the internet.” Republicans may lose their broad support if they don't deliver on improving Americans' lives, Struve cautioned. Young men, especially, may drift from the party in a post-Trump era if the party loses the president-elect's authenticity and bravado. Bienvenido, for one group, will double down in the coming years to solidify and accelerate the voting pattern shifts seen this year, Struve said. “We don’t want this to be a one and done thing,” he said. GIL-T after a nasty boardroom battle are reaping the rewards for their support by selling portions of their stakes in the T-shirt maker. Gildan’s stock price has soared by 40 per cent since shareholders voted in May to reinstate Mr. Chamandy as chief executive officer and install a new board. Last December, the company’s previous board dismissed the then 61-year-old co-founder over succession issues, kicking off a six-month public battle for leadership of one of the world’s largest clothing manufacturers. During the governance showdown, normally low-profile fund managers such as Jarislowsky Fraser Ltd., Turtle Creek Asset Management Inc. and Anson Funds waged public campaigns supporting Mr. Chamandy. Their faith proved justified. Since Mr. Chamandy’s return, Gildan has boosted international sales and ramped up share buybacks, while rivals such as Fruit of the Loom Ltd. stumbled. Within months, Gildan’s stock price soared through analysts’ long-term targets. In November, Gildan’s share price hit all-time highs of $70 on the Toronto Stock Exchange, valuing the Montreal-based company at $10.8-billion. Mr. Chamandy’s staunchest supporters took profits during the rally. Over the summer, Jarislowsky Fraser, Gildan’s largest shareholder, sold 703,000 shares worth roughly $40-million, according to U.S. regulatory filings made Sept. 30. Jarislowsky Fraser, an arm of Bank of Nova Scotia, continues to own 10.3 million shares or 6.7 per cent of Gildan, a stake worth over $700-million. “Our view on Gildan is unchanged,” said Charles Nadim, head of research and portfolio manager at Jarislowsky Fraser, in an e-mail. “Any reduction in shares reflects portfolio considerations given the size of the position after such strong performance.” In recent months, Turtle Creek sold 1.2 million Gildan shares worth roughly $70-million, according to filings. The asset manager continues to hold 3.1 million shares worth more than $200-million. In an interview, co-founder and CEO Andrew Brenton said Turtle Creek has owned Gildan for more than 10 years and continues to support Mr. Chamandy’s strategy but decided to sell a portion of its holding as part of the fund manager’s “continuous portfolio optimization strategy.” “We remain committed to Glenn and his strategy, and we expect to continue to be Gildan shareholders for the long term,” Mr. Brenton said. Turtle Creek oversees $4.2-billion in client assets. Gildan Activewear will be ‘beneficiary of consolidation’ as customers merge, CEO says Anson, a Toronto-based fund manager, built a 2 million share stake worth more than $100-million in Gildan during the proxy fight and publicly backed Mr. Chamandy. In its September letter to investors, Anson co- founder and chief investment officer Moez Kassam said while Gildan’s prospects are bright, the fund manager sold most of its stake after its value rose by 50 per cent. He said: “We believe Gildan will continue to take share from peers.” Two other significant shareholders, Fidelity parent FMR LLC and Coliseum Capital Management LLC, also sold more than a million Gildan shares this fall. Over all, 11 of Gildan’s 25 largest shareholders have trimmed their positions since Mr. Chamandy’s return, while 13 institutional investors added to their stakes, according to filings. Gildan’s third-largest shareholder, Browning West LP, kept its stake constant at 9.6 million shares or 6.2 per cent of the company. The Los Angeles-based fund manager led the campaign to bring back Mr. Chamandy. “We believe Gildan has a strong value creation path ahead of it and look forward to being an engaged and supportive shareholder for many years,” Usman Nabi, Browning West’s managing partner and chief investment officer, said in an e-mail. Gildan’s stock price is soaring as the company moves on from what proved to be an expensive boardroom fight. So far this year, the company has spent $82.3-million on lawyers and advisers in the proxy battle, according to the company’s financial reports. The total includes $9.4-million Gildan paid to Browning West to cover the asset manager’s expenses. Gildan is still contesting outstanding bills. In August, advisory firm Kingsdale Partners LP sued Gildan for $2.3-million in alleged unpaid fees in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. Since Mr. Chamandy’s return to the top job, Gildan has introduced new products and expanded its reach. In a recent report, analyst Mark Petrie at CIBC Capital Markets said sales and profit margins rose after Gildan rolled out “soft cotton technology” to improve the feel and “printability” of its T-shirts. “Gildan is taking market share and we believe product innovation and favourable competitive dynamics are important tailwinds,” Mr. Petrie said. Prior to the boardroom fight, Gildan built new factories in Bangladesh to cut costs and better serve international markets. While revenue growth in North America is relatively modest – projected to be 5 per cent or less annually – Gildan’s international sales jumped 20 per cent to $64-million in the most recent quarter compared to the same period a year ago. Over all, Gildan’s sales rose 2.4 per cent to a record $891-million in the quarter, while adjusted earnings rose 6.5 per cent to $138-million. Mr. Chamandy returned to Gildan promising to ramp up repurchase of the company’s shares, potentially by increasing the company’s relatively low debt levels and has delivered. Since May, Gildan has bought back 14.3 million of its own shares. The company’s current repurchase plan, set in August, allows Gildan to buy back up to 16 million shares or 10 per cent of its float by August, 2025. Mr. Petrie forecast the company will reach that limit early in the new year. Last Wednesday, Gildan raised $700-million in credit markets by selling notes maturing in five and seven years.
