IT exports rise by 33pc to $1.53bn in July-Nov KARACHI: Pakistan’s Information Technology (IT) exports increased by 34 per cent to $1.53 billion in the five months of the current fiscal year, data from the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) showed on Tuesday. The country recorded IT exports of $324 million in November, showing a 24 per cent increase compared with the same month last year, but a 2.0 per cent decrease from the previous month. According to an analyst at Topline Securities, monthly IT exports in November are higher than the last 12-month average of $295 million. This is the 14th consecutive month of YoY IT export growth, starting from October 2023. The analyst in a report attributed the year-on-year increase to several factors: the IT export companies growing client base globally, especially in the GCC region; relaxation in the permissible retention limit by the State Bank of Pakistan, increasing it from 35 per cent to 50 per cent in the Exporters’ Specialised Foreign Currency Accounts; and stability in the local currency, encouraging IT exporters to bring a higher portion of profits back to Pakistan. A MoM decline in IT exports is due to a lower number of working days in November (21 days), compared with October (23 days). Export proceeds per day were recorded at $15.4 million for November versus $14.3 million in the previous month. According to a Pakistan Software Houses Association (P@SHA) survey, 62 per cent of IT companies are maintaining specialised foreign currency accounts.A major development in FY25 was the SBP adding a new category of equity investment abroad (EIA), specifically for export-oriented IT companies. IT exporters can now acquire interest (shareholding) in entities abroad utilising up to 50 per cent proceeds from specialised foreign currency accounts. This development will further boost the confidence of IT exporters to remit proceeds back to Pakistan. Net IT exports (exports-imports) displayed the monthly number of $287 million and increased by 27 per cent YoY in November. These net IT exports numbers are also higher than the last 12-month average of $261 million. “We believe, the IT sector will continue its growth trajectory and momentum with a likely growth of 10-15 per cent for FY25 to $3.5-3.7 billion,” the analyst said.SinoHytec, Toyota co-invest 1,9 billion yen in joint fuel cell venture in China

Gemcor provides flexible automated solutions for precision-based drilling and fastening applications, blending proven reliability with next-generation technology MACOMB, Mich. , Dec. 17, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Since 1937, Gemcor Production Solutions (Gemcor) has installed over 2,000 automated fastening systems worldwide, integral to the manufacturing process of aerostructures throughout modern history. Acquired by Ascent Aerospace in 2016, its advantage is its heritage–a patented, roller-screw technology that provides manufacturing flexibility with many benefits, including shorter cycle times, extended life, and cost savings. "Gemcor products truly set the standard in the industry. With over 80 years of innovation and 100 installations alone in the last ten years, nothing is as reliable or adaptable as a quality-tested factory solution for airframers," shared Dan Friz, Vice President of Business Development and Sales at Ascent Aerospace. Automation and integration were central to Gemcor's evolution under Ascent. "Working directly with legacy Gemcor customers, we were able to pinpoint steps in the production process where opportunities existed to innovate," said Michael Hinckley , Director of Strategic Programs at Ascent Aerospace. "To provide a turn-key solution, we incorporated an automated fastener loading system and integrated a maintenance platform and equipment into the overall production system." For Ascent's customers, quality and cycle-time reductions were key factors in Gemcor's innovation. "The enhanced visual quality inspection with machine learning capabilities, built-in cycle time optimization, and the ability to enable future 'lights-out' operations are just a few of the added benefits of Gemcor's offerings," added Hinckley. "Each of these improvements allows our customers to ramp up production and save on costs, with zero compromise on quality. Our customers trust the legacy capabilities of the Gemcor product line, and the integration into Ascent Aerospace has not only solidified the brand, it has enhanced the overall capabilities." Gemcor's latest technology boasts a fully integrated wing panel assembly production system and six large C-Frame Gemcor machines that provide fastener feed, drill, countersink, sealant application, swage, shave, and multiple inspection capabilities. "We worked directly with Siemens to develop a new motion control solution within Gemcor that supports the SINUMERIK software platform," shared Friz. "The ability to execute closed-loop force feedback with drilling and riveting operations with Siemens' state-of-the-art controller has reduced cycle times while providing a familiar solution for our customers. We pride ourselves at Ascent on our ability to be flexible throughout our design and engineering process, where we work closely with each customer to provide systems that meet specific facility needs and exceed quality expectations." Gemcor products offer fastening applications to provide efficient fastening rates and high productivity for airframers. Gemcor's latest in a range of technological enhancements includes incorporating continuous improvement processes into its SCADA system to provide critical data for customer-defined KPIs and clear, customizable reports. "This will allow manufacturers to access a user-friendly dashboard that shows how the system is performing," shared Nick Battle , General Manager - MI at Ascent Aerospace. "Using machine learning, this feature will also provide predictive maintenance and process action suggestions, OEE, and Statistical Process Control (SPC)." The integration of machine learning is just one important development of many when it comes to Gemcor's capabilities. Additional features using the latest technologies to enhance Gemcor's systems for customers include various software integrations and the use of AI deep learning to optimize performance and reduce cycle times. "Our goal at Ascent with Gemcor product development has been to increase accuracy, repeatability, and reliability while saving our customers time and resources throughout their manufacturing life-cycle. We have achieved this with the help of industry partners and the dedication and hard work of our talented employees," added Battle. Ascent is continuously adapting Gemcor to meet customers' changing needs as technology advances. "From process engineering to build and installation, our process is to work closely with customers to develop their projects and see them through to ensure we are providing an efficient and cost-effective solution." WASHINGTON, Dec 12 (Reuters) - Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said on Thursday his office launched investigations into over a dozen technology platforms over their privacy and safety practices for minors. Those being probed included artificial Intelligence chatbot startup Character.AI and fourteen other platforms like Reddit, Instagram (META.O) , opens new tab and Discord, the Texas attorney general added. Tech platforms have come under increasing scrutiny over their impact on children. Top U.S. social media platforms made an estimated $11 billion in advertising revenue from users younger than 18 in 2022, according to a Harvard study published last year. U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy last year warned that young people using social media risked suffering body image issues, disordered eating, poor sleep quality and low self-esteem, especially among adolescent girls. "Technology companies are on notice that my office is vigorously enforcing Texas' strong data privacy laws," Paxton said. Social media companies have said they will work with officials to protect young users, and say they have introduced new tools designed to protect teens online, including parental control features. The firms had no immediate comment on Thursday. Paxton's statement said the probes would focus on the platforms' compliance with two Texas laws - the Securing Children Online through Parental Empowerment (SCOPE) Act and the Texas Data Privacy and Security Act (TDPSA). The SCOPE Act bans digital service providers from sharing, disclosing, or selling a minor's personal identifying information without permission from the child's parent or legal guardian. The legislation requires firms to provide parents with tools to manage and control the privacy settings on their child's account. The TDPSA imposes notice and consent requirements on companies that collect and use minors' personal data, Paxton's office said. Sign up here. NOTUS reported in September that a significant number of insurance claims were denied. Months later, NOTUS said the company has scrambled to justify those denials. Citizens Property Insurance Corporation announced it would conduct an “independent audit” into the claim denials. After increased scrutiny, the denied claims fell from 77% to 74%. However, according to industry-wide data, it's still much larger than the average of 68%. ALSO READ: Your tax dollars are funding a $64 billion scam That means that, on average, insurance companies deny 68% of residential property claims, and policyholders receive no payment. Citizens CEO Tim Cerio told lawmakers that he hopes the audit will help bring back public trust, but he still believes the low approval rate is legitimate. “To the 77% denial story that’s out there,” Cerio began, “Although I do stand behind the data I presented — our Citizens data that we’ve gathered — it is important to maintain public trust and confidence of our policyholders and stakeholders ..." According to the company's spokesperson, Michael Peltier, that number is significantly higher than the real number. The company only closed claims "because of lack of coverage or because of flood damage are formally deemed 'denied,'" the report said. Other denied claims fell under the policyholder's deductible or if the claim was withdrawn. Those aren't considered "denied." Cerio told the Board of Governors that this calculation means they've only denied 13% of claims. Insurance critic Martin Weiss, who runs an independent watchdog group, told NOTUS number is nothing more than fuzzy math. “If I file a claim and I get a letter back saying your claim has been closed with no payment, whether they use the word denial or not, they’re denying my claim,” Weiss said. “We look at it from the perspective of the average consumer’s actual experience.” Still, state lawmakers were furious. “I’m not going to sit idly by if legitimate claims get denied while rates continue to rise. Period," said Republican state Sen. Ben Albritton. “Floridians have been paying faithfully their insurance premiums for years, sometimes decades, and now they expect their insurance company to keep up its end of the bargain. I want to make sure that impacted Floridians and insurance companies hear me loudly and clearly — we are watching,” Albritton added. Weiss warned last month that Florida insurers are "on the brink of collapse." Read the full report here. A former official in Donald Trump’s first administration , who online sleuths allegedly caught on camera at the U.S. Capitol during the Jan. 6, 2021, attack, is back at work for his former boss, according to a new report. Pete Marocco, former deputy assistant secretary of defense for African Affairs, has been spotted at Trump’s transition headquarters in Florida, where he is at work with the president-elect’s transition team on “national security personnel matters,” sources told Politico on Monday. That includes interviewing candidates this week to fill administration positions, including in the State Department, the report added. ALSO READ: The Medicare Advantage trap: What they don’t tell you Marocco found himself a controversial figure during his stint in Trump’s first administration. He drew “international fire ” for his work in the first term and has since emerged as a conservative activist in Dallas, Politico reported. He was also identified, along with his wife, by the online sleuth group Sedition Hunters as allegedly being among the Trump-inspired rioters inside and outside of the Capitol on Jan. 6 , the report said. But Marocco told the publication that the allegations were nothing more than “petty smear tactics and desperate personal attacks,” and neither he nor his wife have been charged . In a statement, Trump transition spokesperson Karoline Leavitt praised Marocco’s “valuable knowledge on national security policy” and added that he “has been a tremendous benefit to the Trump-Vance transition effort.” “Democrats and their allies in the media who think they are going to obstruct our ability to deliver on this mandate by going back to the same January 6 playbook of smears and faux outrage that was soundly rejected by the American people will be disappointed,” Leavitt told Politico. Florida state Rep. Susan Valdés announced Monday she is defecting to the Republican Party — immediately after being re-elected as a Democrat. Valdés, a Cuban-American lawmaker who was raised by immigrants in New York, represents a Tampa area district. "I have spent my adult life fighting to give a voice to the people of my West Tampa home," she wrote. "I have done so as a Democrat partly out of habit — I come from a family of Democrats — and partly because I believed the Democrats were the party most concerned with the working families I represent." However, she added, "I will not waste my final two years in the Florida Legislature being ignored in a caucus whose leadership expects me to ignore the needs of my community." "I will continue to fight every day to benefit the people of West Tampa, Hillsborough County and the state of Florida," she concluded. "And in my heart, I know the best way to do that is to stand with Speaker [Daniel] Perez and join the Republican supermajority in the Florida House of Representatives. ALSO READ: The Medicare Advantage trap: What they don’t tell you Valdés did not explicitly list a reason for abandoning Democrats in her statement. However, it comes just a week after she lost a campaign to chair the Hillsborough County Democratic Executive Committee. Furthermore, last year, she was one of a small handful of Democrats who crossed the aisle to support a massive school voucher program championed by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis . This was also a precipitating issue cited by North Carolina state Rep. Tricia Cotham , who also infamously defected to the GOP last year, giving the party there a supermajority in the legislature that they narrowly lost this year , as well as Georgia state Rep. Mesha Mainor , who was defeated after defecting in the election last month. Critics have said school voucher programs, touted as giving parents "choice" to move their tax dollars to private education, consistently worsen education outcomes while enriching a small group of wealthy parents already outside the public school system. Last week, Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) appeared to be against Donald Trump's announced nominee for the Department of Defense, Pete Hegseth . But on Monday, Ernst met with him again and now pledges her support . “Pete committed to completing a full audit of the Pentagon and selecting a senior official who will uphold the roles and value of our servicemen and women and who will prioritize and strengthen my work to prevent sexual assault within the ranks," she writes in a statement. She is also reportedly a top contender for the role should Hegseth's nomination fail. Hegseth's nomination has been plagued by revelations he was accused of rape in 2017 and amid accusations he has a drinking problem. He has also advocated against having women in combat roles. Hegseth claimed that the sexual encounter was consensual. His attorney, Tom Parlatore, has said his client entered into a confidentiality agreement with the accuser. "As I support Pete through this process, I look forward to a fair hearing based on truth, not anonymous sources," Ernst said. Other lawmakers have demanded that he swear not to drink while under the position after concerns that he was an alcoholic from former and current Fox colleagues. Ernst, a former Army National Guard member and a retired lieutenant colonel, indicated Thursday she wasn't ready to support Hegseth. A spokesperson for Ernst told Newsweek: "As Senator Ernst has said, she is not seeking to be secretary of defense, there is no 'campaign' against Pete, and is continuing the vetting process." Her comments led to social media backlash from MAGA allies, including Charlie Kirk, the founder of the nonprofit conservative Turning Point USA. "People in Iowa have a well-funded primary challenger ready against her. Her political career is in serious jeopardy," he threatened on X. A tax purported to make GP visits cost more and a barrier to entering the housing market have been removed by a state government fulfilling more of its election promises. Login or signup to continue reading The Liberal National government scrapped a "patient's tax" during the final Queensland parliament sitting on Thursday, a move it vowed to do after it won the October 26 election. The payroll tax was set to be imposed on general practitioners, which the government claimed would make visiting a doctor more expensive, end bulk billing in Queensland, and make it harder to get an appointment. It became a key feature of the election after a text message "mediscare" campaign from both the former Labor government and LNP. By the end of the campaign, both sides had committed to scrapping the tax set to come into place at the end of the financial year following a delay. A NSW tribunal ruled in 2021 that tenant GPs were subject to payroll tax as they were employees not contractors, sparking changes nationally. The former Labor government struck an amnesty in 2023 meaning practices did not have to pay the tax until June 2025 or for the previous five years so the businesses could adjust before it came into effect. Now, the proposed tax has been scrapped, which the LNP hails as a measure that will relieve pressure during the cost-of-living crisis. "By axing Labor's Patient's Tax we are protecting bulk billing for Queenslanders and easing pressure on our Emergency Departments and easing cost of living for families," Treasurer David Janetzki said. The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners Queensland branch welcomed the move to change the payroll tax for doctors. "This will come as a big relief for practice owners, GPs and our patients who value the relationship they have with their GP highly – there is no substitute for the quality care you get from a specialist GP," chair Dr Cath Hester said. The government also removed stamp duty on new builds and land for eligible first-home buyers, another item on the LNP's post-election win to-do list. Removing stamp duty on a new house and land package could mean a saving of $37,000 in Brisbane's north. "Scrapping first home buyer stamp duty on new builds provides real savings and puts the Great Australian Dream back within reach," Mr Janetzki said. It comes as the government's centrepiece "adult crime, adult time" laws passed on Thursday, meaning kids as young as 10 will face life sentences on serious charges like murder. Queensland Parliament will sit again in February. Australian Associated Press DAILY Today's top stories curated by our news team. Also includes evening update.
