The United States Postal Service might have found a way to unite a nation bitterly divided after this month's election: It will release a Betty White stamp. The beloved actor known for roles in "The Golden Girls," "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," "Boston Legal" and others will be on a 2025 Forever stamp, USPS announced this past week. White died in late December 2021 , less than three weeks before her 100th birthday. The Postal Service hasn't announced a release date for the stamp. Betty White speaks Sept. 17, 2018, at the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. “An icon of American television, Betty White (1922–2021) shared her wit and warmth with viewers for seven decades,” the Postal Service said in announcing the stamp, which depicts a smiling White based on a 2010 photograph by celebrity photographer Kwaku Alston . “The comedic actor, who gained younger generations of fans as she entered her 90s, was also revered as a compassionate advocate for animals.” Boston-based artist Dale Stephanos created the digital illustration from Alston's photo. "I'd love to send a letter back to my 18-year-old self with this stamp on it and tell him that everything is going to be OK," Stephanos posted on Facebook . Regardless of personal politics, self-proclaimed supporters of Republican President-elect Donald Trump and Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris reacted with delight on social media. "Betty White was my hero, all of my life! I actually had a doll when I was a little girl I named Betty White," one Trump supporter posted on X , formerly Twitter. “Something to make this awful week a little better: We’re getting a Betty White stamp,” a pro-Harris X account posted. White combined a wholesome image with a flare for bawdy jokes . Her television career began in the early 1950s and exploded as she aged. “The only SNL host I ever saw get a standing ovation at the after party," Seth Meyers posted on Twitter after her death. Opinion editor’s note: Editorials represent the opinions of the Minnesota Star Tribune Editorial Board, which operates independently from the newsroom. ••• Members of the Minnesota Star Tribune Editorial Board have long had a Thanksgiving tradition of pragmatic appreciation — that is, gratitude for the elegance that surrounds us, both natural and in human constructs, and mindfulness of the potential for their misuse or insufficiency. Here are our thoughts this year: Be thankful for free and fair elections, and for the peaceful transfer of presidential power that has endured throughout our nation’s history. Be mindful that these traditions form the bedrock of our democracy and must not be taken for granted. Be thankful for those serving our country, be they in the military, the Foreign Service or the bureaucracy. Be mindful that many service members and diplomats are dispatched overseas this Thanksgiving, and that many federal workers are worried over their futures — not for performance reasons, but for political ones. Be thankful for America’s allies — especially the NATO nations that answered the collective-defense mechanism known as Article 5 the one and only time it was invoked, by the U.S. after 9/11. Be mindful that these bonds are being tested by often reckless rhetoric from some in this country. Be thankful for a free and independent press. Be mindful that attempts to disempower it serve aspiring autocrats and those who have something to hide. Be thankful for the freedom of speech, which allows you to express your opinions without government interference or retaliation. Be mindful that this right does not protect you from the criticism of your peers. Words are a powerful tool that should be used thoughtfully. Be thankful this nation’s founders created a form of government that allows states to be laboratories of democracy. Be mindful of the inequalities this can create, and that the mobility to relocate to a setting one finds ideologically agreeable is a privilege, not easily undertaken by all. Be thankful that Minnesota declined to rush to allow sports betting, an option given the states by a ruling of the U.S. Supreme Court in 2018. Be mindful that black-market gambling is rampant, with or without legal sanction. Be thankful for Minnesota’s world-class health care providers. Be mindful that this vital workforce is stretched thin and that smart policies are needed to encourage more young people to enter these noble professions. Be thankful for our state’s abundant and glorious natural resources — its waterways, prairies, forests and wilderness. Be mindful of the need to protect them for future generations of Minnesotans. Environmental stewardship is a fundamental responsibility of citizenship. Be thankful for the cold. Be mindful that anthropogenic climate change is slowly warming our planet, and that this will continue in the absence of significant intervention from and cooperation among our world leaders. Be thankful for the cooling off of inflation, which in recent months has come close to the Federal Reserve Board’s target. Be mindful that it would be improbable for prices to return broadly to their previous levels without other kinds of economic pain. Be mindful that the Fed’s target has not quite been reached and that certain plans of the incoming presidential administration, especially tariffs, are seen as inflationary by most economists. Be thankful that the economy is ever-evolving and adapting to circumstances, as it did with the supply-chain disruptions caused by the pandemic. Be thankful for the plethora of books available in our libraries and local bookstores. Be mindful that access to some of those books is being threatened across the country by attempted book bans. Be thankful for the increased sensitivities in how we treat one another in society. Be mindful of the backlash against them — but also of the danger in banishing levity.

‘Outnumbered' panelists discuss the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency’s plans to overhaul government spending. Some House Republicans are embracing the idea of Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., leading a new congressional subcommittee dedicated to cutting down on government waste. House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., is planning to commission a new panel under his purview called the Delivering on Government Efficiency subcommittee, Fox News Digital first learned on Thursday. And multiple Republican lawmakers have already told Fox News Digital they hope to join the panel. "Marjorie would take no prisoners," said Rep. Tim Burchett, R-Tenn., who said he's already texted Greene about the subcommittee. "I would love to be on it." MIKE JOHNSON WINS REPUBLICAN SUPPORT TO BE HOUSE SPEAKER AGAIN AFTER TRUMP ENDORSEMENT Reps. Anna Paulina Luna, R-Fla., left, and Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, R-Fla., who is also aiming for a spot on the committee, said, "good for her" when asked about Greene leading the panel. "I think she'll be a basically an immovable object on some of the spending cuts that we need," Luna said. As to her own bid for a spot, she said, "We're going to make a push right now." It comes after Trump announced the creation of an advisory panel called the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which he tapped Vivek Ramaswamy and Elon Musk to lead. Trump said the panel would help his administration "slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures and restructure Federal Agencies." Rep. Cory Mills, R-Fla., a member of the newly created DOGE Caucus, said that whoever were to lead the subcommittee should be "hawkish" on fiscal matters. " I always talk about three things, which is repealing programs and departments that no longer serve the intended purposes; reforming certain areas where we understand that, just the way times change, the requirements and needs change as well; and then also re-energize in certain areas to make sure that Americans know what's accessible to them as far as assets or resources." Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., who serves on Comer's Oversight Committee, did not feel strongly one way or another about joining the DOGE subcommittee but praised Greene's ascension to the chair. "One thing about Marjorie is that she's, you know, she's locked in on details, and so she's going to want to be very helpful to Elon and Vivek," Donalds said. "And obviously, we're breaking new ground here." He also suggested that Rep. Michael Cloud, R-Texas, would be "very good" on the subcommittee. Cloud did show interest when asked by Fox News Digital, and he similarly praised Greene. Nutrition Sri Lanka – an ambitious program to end malnutrition – was formally launched recently. It seeks to provide undernourished children and pregnant women with the nutrients essential through the consumption of fortified rice. The program is spearheaded by Akshata, which is the first brand in Sri Lanka to acquire and master the technology to produce fortified rice kernels efficiently and cost-effectively. Fortifying staple foods such as rice with essential micronutrients like vitamin A, B vitamins, iron and zinc is among the most economical evidence-based interventions to help combat widespread micronutrient deficiencies. Nutrition Sri Lanka is an initiative by Grains ‘n’ Green’ Ltd Managing Director Roshan Perera, which produces Akshata products. Experimentation on fortified kernels in Sri Lanka using extrusion technology began in January by a research team led by Senior Professor K.K.D.S. Ranaweera with technical support from PATH. Lions International Past President Mahendra Amarasuriya was also an important part of the program and contributed in many ways. “We have already started production of fortified rice kernels to be supplied for the rice fortification initiative under the school meal program. The company is hopeful of more orders from sub-saharan African countries,” said Roshan Perera. According to him, rice fortification for addressing the issue of micronutrient deficiencies in the population is a vital initiative, and local production of fortified rice kernels for use in the manufacture of fortified rice was identified as a key element in the long-term sustainability of the rice fortification programme. He also noted that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2021 mandated that the poor in India should get only iron-fortified rice under all government welfare schemes, and this has been extremely successful. “We are the only company in Sri Lanka with the capability and technical know-how to implement this project and provide the necessary fortified kernels at 50% of the cost currently incurred by importing,” said Perera. The kernels are enriched with folic acid and iron through an extrusion process creating nutrient-rich grains that will be blended with regular rice to produce fortified rice. He added that fortified rice will soon be available to the public to purchase off the shelf with various nutrients added to cater to deficiencies, which will revolutionise the rice industry in Sri Lanka while building a healthier population. Though rice is a great source of energy, it is a poor source of micronutrients because the milling process removes the nutrient-rich bran layers. Malnutrition is a serious problem in Sri Lanka. At present, as many as 2.3 million children in the country suffer from its dire consequences. Sri Lanka has one of the highest rates of acute malnutrition among children under 5 years in South Asia, and many suffer from chronic wasing. It is essential to remedy this and ensure that children have a chance to develop physically and mentally and achieve their full potential. It is interesting to note that experts’ approval of rice fortification for the school meal program emphasised the need to manufacture fortified rice kernels locally as importing fortified kernels is a heavy burden on the country’s foreign exchange. Akshata’s efforts have finally made this a reality. Akshata is a pioneer in the cultivation and manufacture of food products that cater to health-conscious consumers in Sri Lanka. It was the first brand to introduce heirloom rice varieties with proven health benefits such as pachchaperumal, suwandel, black rice and kuruluthuda to Sri Lankan supermarkets. It is also the first brand in the world to introduce breakfast cereals made of heirloom rice. These products include moringa, jackfruit and lotus flower seeds along with an innovative honey spoon.
