US prosecutors have decided to drop two criminal cases against president-elect Donald Trump. Special prosecutor Jack Smith has told courts in Washington DC and Florida he is discontinuing the cases, which related to alleged election interference and mishandling of classified documents. In a motion filed in Washington, he cited a longstanding Department of Justice (DOJ) policy not to prosecute a sitting president. "The government's position on the merits of the defendant's prosecution has not changed," the motion says. "But the circumstances have." What was Trump charged with? Last year, Mr Smith brought two criminal cases against Trump. In one, he alleged that Trump had conspired to defraud the US through an illegal scheme to overturn Joe Biden's 2020 election win, and cling on to power himself. The prosecution argued Trump used "pervasive and destabilising lies" to try to convince the public the election had been rigged. He was also accused of using fraudulent electors to manipulate the electoral college system, and to sign up his vice-president, Mike Pence, to help carry out the scheme. Trump pleaded not guilty in August last year, a couple of weeks after the charges were brought. In the second case, in Florida, Mr Smith had attempted to prosecute Trump for illegally retaining classified documents after his time in the White House. Trump allegedly kept the documents, which contained sensitive national security information, at his Mar-a-Lago estate, and then obstructed government efforts to retrieve them. A Trump-appointed judge dismissed that case in July , finding that Mr Smith had been unlawfully appointed. Mr Smith had initially appealed that decision, but has now decided not to pursue that appeal. After Mr Smith's motions were filed today, Trump used social media to attack the cases as "empty and lawless" and say they "should never have been brought". "Over $100 million dollars of taxpayer dollars [sic] has been wasted in the Democrat Party's fight against their political opponent, me," he wrote. "Nothing like this has ever happened in our country before." Why have the charges been dropped? Mr Smith's motion to dismiss the election interference case said the decision did "not turn on the gravity of the crimes charged, the strength of the government's proof, or the merits of the prosecution, which the government stands fully behind". It instead points to the DOJ's long-held belief that the Constitution does not allow a president to be prosecuted: "It has long been the position of the Department of Justice that the United States Constitution forbids the federal indictment and subsequent criminal prosecution of a sitting president. "But the department and the country have never faced the circumstance here, where a federal indictment against a private citizen has been returned by a grand jury and a criminal prosecution is already underway when the defendant is elected president. "Confronted with this unprecedented situation, the Special Counsel's Office consulted with the Department's Office of Legal Counsel (OLC), whose interpretation of constitutional questions such as those raised here is binding on department prosecutors. "After careful consideration, the department has determined that OLC's prior opinions concerning the Constitution's prohibition on federal indictment and prosecution of a sitting president apply to this situation and that as a result this prosecution must be dismissed before the defendant is inaugurated." Trump will return to the White House early next year after a decisive win in the US presidential election this month. His inauguration will be on January 20. What about the other cases against Trump? As well as these federal cases, Trump was charged under state law in two separate cases last year. One of those cases, in Georgia, also related to alleged election interference. In that state, Trump and 18 of his associates were charged under anti-racketeering laws that are usually directed at outlaw gangs or mafia-style organised crime networks . That case remains alive, and four of Trump's co-defendants have already pleaded guilty. But it's been in limbo while Trump's lawyers fight to have District Attorney Fani Willis removed from the case, because she had an "inappropriate" relationship with a lawyer who was contracted to work on it with her . A hearing set for December 5 was last week cancelled until further notice. Ms Willis has indicated she intended to continue pursuing the case. The other case, in New York, related to "hush money" paid to porn star Stormy Daniels while Trump was campaigning to win the 2016 election. In May, a jury found Trump guilty of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records . That verdict stands, but sentencing has been delayed. Judge Juan Merchan is considering whether to postpone sentencing until after Trump serves his four-year term as president. Trump's lawyers have indicated they would fight to have the case dismissed completely. Google's northwest Omaha data center just recently started operations, though it is not finished, a company spokesman said Monday. It is among Nebraska's three data center project sites that over five years has seen nearly $4.4 billion in capital investment. This year's investment was reported to be $930 million, the company said at a media event. (Cindy Gonzalez/Nebraska Examiner) LINCOLN — Now five years since Google built a physical presence in Nebraska, the tech giant on Monday announced its latest annual spend on infrastructure across the state: $930 million. The 2024 capital investment makes for a total so far of about $4.4 billion in Nebraska data centers to help meet growing demand for Google Cloud, artificial intelligence innovations and services such as the company’s search, maps and workspace programs, said spokesman Dan Harbeke. Just within the past few months, he said, Google’s sprawling data center site in northwest Omaha became operational but is not finished growing. Its newest data center project in Lincoln remains under construction on roughly 580 acres. And the original Google campus in Nebraska, a Papillion project that broke ground on 275 acres in late 2019, has continued to expand in various ways. “We’re effectively continuing to build out those footprints,” said Harbeke, regional head of public policy and external affairs. “We are not announcing any new sites this year but we are announcing continued growth and expansion across all three sites here in Nebraska.” Also during a news event Monday, Google announced a different kind of investment — philanthropic donations to support workforce development. Such contributions are separate and in addition to construction improvements, Harbeke said. Google.org , for instance, granted $250,000 to the University of Nebraska Foundation to support AI research and education across its campuses. Earlier this month, Google’s philanthropic arm also provided Creighton University with a $250,000 grant to support the private university’s efforts to prepare students for expanded uses of artificial intelligence. Company officials on Monday also described a $100,000 donation to the Lincoln Public Schools Foundation’s Spark Summer Camp program, which targets elementary school students interested in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. NU President Jeffrey Gold said the university gift underscores the shared commitment to harnessing the power of AI to ensure Nebraska is on the cutting edge of research, teaching and use. “Our hope is that this investment in Nebraska will lead to opportunities for economic growth and innovation,” Gold said. They also declined to disclose the number of employees per site but in a media statement said more than 120 jobs for Nebraskans have been created since 2019, in a variety of full time and external supplier roles, including computer technicians, engineers, maintenance and food service jobs. Harbeke said Google has started to see worker mobility and advancement within the state and the Omaha metro area, which includes the more established Council Bluffs plant. “We’re five years into our Nebraska footprint ... you’re seeing that movement among Googlers across these sites, which has been really neat to see,” Harbeke said. “One of the folks who is going to be leading our Lincoln campus worked out of our Papillion site.” U.S. Sen. The first of its silicon-based solid-state micro-speakers subsequently found their way into wireless buds, and now the company has a new full-range flavor for open-fit earphones. The Sycamore module works in a similar way to the we saw last year, where thin-film piezo actuators excite a silicon membrane to produce sound waves. But where the previous was designed for noise-canceling in-ears (such as Creative's ), this latest development will see use in smart watches, augmented/virtual reality headsets and other wearables like open-fit earphones. "With Sycamore, mobile electronics can now achieve thinner, more stylish form factors while maintaining big, rich sound," said the company's Mike Housholder. "With better performance at both the low and high ends, Sycamore delivers powerful, full-range audio for smart watches, smart glasses, and any other small, mobile form factor that engineers dream up." The all-silicon, full-range, near-field micro-speaker measures just 8.41 x 9 x 1.13 mm and tips the scales at 150 mg. xMEMS reckons that makes it around a third of the thickness of a "conventional dynamic driver package" while also having one seventh of the surface area. It's reported to require less back volume area than legacy 3-mm-thick dynamic drivers, while boasting a similar mid-bass performance with up to 11 dB of sub-bass headroom also available. The all-rounder is no slouch at the higher frequencies either, punching up to "15 dB above 5 kHz over legacy drivers." That means potentially slimmer speaker-packing smart glasses or smartwatches, less bulky open earphone designs and more room to cram other tech inside smartphones. The micro-speakers could also see applications in such things are laptops, automotive sound systems and Bluetooth speakers. The Sycamore is IP58-rated for moisture resistance too, meaning that it can be used in wearables geared towards gym or training use. xMEMS will start sending samples to device manufacturers from the first quarter of next year, ahead of the start of mass production in October 2025. The biggest storyline was the technical foul assessed to Hurley in the final minute. Hurley was frustrated by the foul call on Liam McNeeley. In turn, Hurley was hit with a technical foul that ended up shifting the game in the closing stretch. After the game, Hurley did not hide his feelings after the game about the technical foul, per Brendan Marks of The Athletic. David Butler II-Imagn Images "That was a joke. I mean, I just watched it," Hurley said. "I had a lot of issues with what went on in the game...For that call to be made at that point in the game is a complete joke." Hurley went one step further in an interview with CBS Sports, per Matt Norlander. "I think it was the (expletive) calls," Hurley said. "I would expect to come to play in an event, and I don't know too many back-to-back national championship teams that get that type of a whistle." Fans were not pleased with the foul on McNeeley, although the technical for Hurley was a long time coming given his antics throughout the game . After the foul, Hurley was given a technical, and PJ Carter hit four straight free throws to break the 92 tie and give the Tigers a four-point lead down the stretch. By the end of it all, UConn lost by two points, putting that much more emphasis on the foul call and the play down the stretch. Her investigation, with help from forensic auditors at Ernst & Young, found a city caseworker had colluded with landlords to pay rents from an emergency housing fund administered by the city that were as much as 63 per cent above market value. That afternoon, city managers were to meet with Ottawa police who will decide whether to begin a criminal investigation. Gougeon’s investigation found that, beginning as early as October 2023, six landlords — four individuals and two corporations — began receiving inflated rent payments. All six were overseen by a single individual landlord. The caseworker is identified only as Employee A in the report. Employee A had a family member who also worked for the city, identified as Employee B, who received the kickback payments from the landlords beginning in January 2024. Both Employees A and B had previously worked with the landlord, but never disclosed that relationship to the city, a breach of the city’s code of conduct policy, Gougeon said. Investigators also examined text messages between Employee A and the landlord. “Is there anyway you can put a couple in there and get me a higher rent like $2300 or what can we do on this thing? It’s a one bedroom apartment, if you get me the rent, of course the bonuses will be much larger,” read one such message. Article content “Without information to justify the legitimacy of the payments made by the Landlord to Employee A, we observed multiple factors that indicate that these payments are consistent with a kickback scheme designed to provide a benefit to both the Landlord and Employee A,” Gougeon wrote in her report. The rents were paid with federal, provincial and municipal money through emergency housing programs administered by the city. Gougeon said her investigation was limited in scope, but identified “in excess of 20” rental agreements linked to the kickback payments. The report included three examples: a two-bedroom unit in Beacon Hill South that rented for $2,900, or 38 per cent above the $2,100 market value; a three-bedroom unit in Pineview that rented for $4,050, or 46 per cent above the $2,775 market value; and a three-bedroom unit in Ledbury/Heron Gate/Ridgemont that rented at $4,050, or 63 per cent over the $2,491 market rate for similar units in the area. The city has terminated all relationships with the landlords involved, as recommended by the auditor general, and is developing a transition plan for tenants who were affected. We’re not looking to see any people back out on the street,” Gougeun said. “It’s being done to ensure the city’s reputation is kept intact.” The investigation also found that Employees A and B started up a moving company during the kickback period that profited by moving clients into the apartments with inflated rents. While caseworkers are supposed to examine lease agreements and provide clients advice on whether the rent being charged is fair, ultimately it is the clients themselves who decide whether to accept the agreement. NEW ORLEANS (AP) — New Orleans tight end Taysom Hill is likely to miss the rest of the season after injuring his knee in the Saints' loss to the Los Angeles Rams. “It looks like an ACL tear,” interim coach Darren Rizzi said Monday. “He’ll probably get a second opinion, but it looks like it will be season-ending.” Hill, who is listed at tight end but plays a variety of roles, was carted off the field after taking a hard hit to his left knee while converting a fourth down on a direct snap in the Saints’ 21-14 loss Sunday to the Rams. The injury came one game after he'd posted a career-best 138 yards rushing and scored three touchdowns in a victory over Cleveland. He also has lined up at quarterback and running back, as well as playing special teams. “It means everybody else has to step up,” Rizzi said. “He fills so many roles, so there are going to be a lot of different guys that have to be a part of the solution there. It’s hard to sit here and tell you we are going to replace Taysom. You can’t. He’s a phenomenal person, player, leader and captain. It’s a big loss." Hill is the third key offensive player the Saints have lost. He joins leading wide receivers Chris Olave, who suffered a concussion in Week 9 and has not played since, and Rashid Shaheed, who is out for the year after tearing a meniscus in Week 7. Rizzi said guard Nick Saldiveri also might miss the remaining five games after injuring his left knee in the fourth quarter one series before Hill. Without Hill, though, the Saints’ quest to get back in the NFC South race became even tougher. At 4-8, they trail Atlanta and Tampa Bay by two games. Hill has 99 catches, 437 carries, 302 passes, 44 touchdowns, 19 tackles and one blocked kick in seven years with the Saints. “I don’t know if I can compare Taysom to anybody else that I’ve ever coached,” Rizzi said. “There’s not a guy that comes to mind that has been able to do all the different things he’s been able to do just in one game, forget about his career." When a family visits the dining room at St. Vincent de Paul, like Phoenix mom Alyssa DeSapio and four her kids, they are immediately surrounded with love, regardless of the struggles they’re enduring. “Take care of four of my kids and then I’m going to two different colleges, just to try to get out of the hood I guess you would say,” she said. For DeSapio, life isn’t easy. “It’s pretty hectic managing four different kids,” she said. "Their appointments, therapy, school on my own and helping them with their school, but we make it happen.” DeSapio says it’s especially difficult financially. “I’m basically living on a fixed income, I’m in section 8 housing, so I get a little check for my utilities and that doesn’t really cover my utilities, so I always fall behind, so financially I’m struggling,” she said. But still, she remains strong for her kids. “No matter what, I always make a way to find clothes or diapers or whatever they need,” said DeSapio. At SVDP’s family room, a team helps meet the needs of families like theirs. “We come almost every day,” she said. Families with children under 18 are seated together to enjoy a meal on tables with tablecloths with real silverware. Volunteers serve them restaurant-style, providing meal options for them to choose from, bringing the food to their table. It doesn’t feel like a traditional soup kitchen. “The dining room is open,” said Cindy Bernardo, the family evening program manager. “We’re feeding the residents and the families as we do Monday through Friday... they get to sit down and relax.” Bernardo says the families get a choice of two meals, to give them the feeling like they’re at a restaurant. The special experience is about so much more than just a hot meal. “Agencies come here so they can offer their services to the families, and then we had a barbershop quartet for the first time,” said Bernardo. For DeSapio and her kids, it’s a family experience where they feel respected and cared for. “It changes everything,” she said. “Places like this really help families like me, just be able to get the necessities that we need to get by.” The team of staff and volunteers in the dining room are truly making life better for DeSapio and her kids, along with so many others. “I just think it’s wonderful,” she said. “It is God’s work, definitely.” During the summer, the Phoenix dining room also serves as a heat relief station, offering cold water, air conditioning and temporary shelter to those experiencing homelessness.
