Lawyers for Sean "Diddy" Combs say a "Jane Doe" naming Jay-Z in a sexual assault lawsuit is an example of the "shameless publicity stunts" surrounding the "Bad Boy For Life" rapper's legal woes. In court documents filed Monday, lawyers for Jay-Z , whose legal name is Shawn Carter, asked the judge to require that the woman claiming Jay-Z raped her at a 2000 VMAs afterparty when she was 13 identify herself in the complaint or dismiss the case. The accuser originally filed the suit against Combs in October but refiled it on Sunday to name Jay-Z as the celebrity who allegedly raped her and Combs as "Celebrity B" watched. In a statement to Newsweek on Monday, Combs' legal said, "This amended complaint and the recent extortion lawsuit against Mr. [Tony] Buzbee exposes his barrage of lawsuits against Mr. Combs for what they are: shameless publicity stunts, designed to extract payments from celebrities who fear having lies spread about them, just as lies have been spread about Mr. Combs. "As his legal team has said before, Mr. Combs has full confidence in the facts and the integrity of the judicial process. In court, the truth will prevail: that Mr. Combs never sexually assaulted or trafficked anyone—man or woman, adult or minor," Combs' defense concluded. Jay-Z argued in his motion to dismiss that he was the target of an "extortionate campaign" designed to pressure him into paying millions, regardless of the truth. Newsweek has contacted a lawyer for Jay-Z by email for comment. Jay-Z's Motion to Expedite Due to "intense media scrutiny," Jay-Z wants to clear his name as fast as possible. Alex Spiro, a lawyer for Jay-Z, also filed a motion Monday to expedite this case. "For the avoidance of doubt, Mr. Carter is entirely innocent. This is a shakedown," Spiro wrote. "He is not mentioned, referenced, or implicated in any way in the criminal investigation of Mr. Combs. He is neither a target nor a person of interest in that investigation. "We are available at the Court's earliest convince to provide additional briefing or to appear for a hearing on this matter." Jay-Z Denies Rape Allegation Jay-Z has viciously denied the rape allegation, issuing a first-person statement Sunday shortly after news of the lawsuit broke. In a statement released through his Roc Nation social media account and representative Jana Fleishman, Carter called the lawsuit a "blackmail attempt" and criticized Buzbee directly. "My lawyer received a blackmail attempt, called a demand letter, from a 'lawyer' named Tony Buzbee. What he had calculated was the nature of these allegations and the public scrutiny would make me want to settle," Carter stated. "I have no idea how you have come to be such a deplorable human Mr. Buzbee, but I promise you I have seen your kind many times over," Carter wrote. "My heart and support goes out to true victims in the world, who have to watch how their life story is dressed in costume for profitability by this ambulance chaser in a cheap suit." In response to the statement, Buzbee told Newsweek , "Mr. Carter previously denied being the one who sued me and my firm. He even filed his frivolous case under a pseudonym. What he fails to say in his recent statement is my firm sent his lawyer a demand letter on behalf of an alleged victim and that victim never demanded a penny from him. Instead, she only sought a confidential mediation." Buzbee added, "Since I sent the letter on her behalf, Mr. Carter has not only sued me, but he has tried to bully and harass me and this plaintiff. His conduct has had the opposite impact. She is emboldened. I'm very proud of her resolve. As far as the allegations in the complaint filed today, we will let the filing speak for itself and will litigate the facts in court, not in the media." Doe alleges that the assault occurred after being driven to an MTV Video Music Awards after-party. According to the lawsuit, she was taken to a white house with a U-shaped driveway where she was required to sign what she believed was a non-disclosure agreement. "These allegations are so heinous in nature that I implore you to file a criminal complaint, not a civil one!! Whomever would commit such a crime against a minor should be locked away, would you not agree? These alleged victims would deserve real justice if that were the case," Carter wrote in his Sunday statement. "My only heartbreak is for my family. My wife and I will have to sit our children down, one of whom is at the age where her friends will surely see the press and ask questions about the nature of these claims and explain the cruelty and greed of people. I mourn yet another loss of innocence." Jay-Z shares three children with his wife Beyoncé : Blue Ivy, 12, and 7-year-old twins Sir and Rumi. Meanwhile, Combs is the subject of at least 20 civil lawsuits with allegations of sexual misconduct and other illegal activity. Jay-Z is the first fellow celebrity to be accused of wrongdoing in the complaints against Combs. Combs also denied any wrongdoing. He is currently behind bars at the notoriously rough Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn as he awaits his May 2025 sex trafficking trial. Do you have a story Newsweek should be covering? After recalling the father of the shooting victim to the stand, the Crown at the field party shooting trial closed its case in the London courthouse on Monday following several weeks of testimony. Ricardo Silva told the jury that he did see his son Josue with an airsoft pistol in his backyard but that it was locked in his own personal safe on the night he was killed. He said when he saw Josue in the backyard, “He was just shooting Coca Cola cans.” The court has heard that Silva’s 18-year-old son Josue would die from a gunshot wound to the stomach after attending the bush bash for young people off Pack Road in southwest London on July 30, 2021. After his testimony the Crown handed the case over to the defence. The jury was told by defence lawyer Ricardo Golec that he will start his case on Wednesday. His client, 23-year-old Carlos Guerra Guerra has plead not guilty to second degree murder and assault with a weapon. Cambodian Minister of Information Neth Pheaktra has reaffirmed Cambodia’s commitment to foster media cooperation with countries in South and Southeast Asia, stressing that it will contribute positively to regional and even global development. “In light of the opportunities and challenges posed by significant shifts in international relations and the rapid emergence of the intelligent era, Cambodia is committed to deepening media cooperation with countries in South and Southeast Asia. We are confident that, in the future, the South and Southeast Asia Media Network will play even more significant roles,” he said in his remarks at the South and Southeast Asian Media Network (SSAMN) Annual Meeting 2024, held on Dec. 9 in Xishuangbanna, an autonomous prefecture in China’s southwestern Yunnan province, under the theme “Joining Hands for New Mechanism of Media Cooperation.” He continued that through collective efforts, all participants in the SSAMN can better promote the development of national and international relations, deepen mutual understanding and trust, and enhance cooperation across various fields. “Cambodia encourages our friends in the media sector to harness their strengths, actively promote positive energy, and foster cultural exchange and mutual appreciation, thereby contributing to the building of a shared future for humanity,” the Cambodian information minister said. Neth Pheaktra took the opportunity to highlight Cambodia’s remarkable achievements in its media exchange and cooperation with countries in South and Southeast Asia. “For instance, we have maintained collaborations with media departments and outlets in ASEAN nations and engaged positively with Chinese media. Additionally, Cambodia has actively participated in media exchange initiatives within the frameworks of China-ASEAN cooperation and Lancang-Mekong cooperation, enabling more Cambodian citizens to gain insights into the region’s countries and injecting new momentum into mutual exchanges among the peoples of different nations,” he pointed out. Over the past year, he said, the Ministry of Information of the Kingdom of Cambodia has actively supported media outlets such as National Television of Kampuchea and Koh Santepheap Daily in their participation in the Network. The “Yunnan-Angkor Tours” series of activities the ministry has jointly organised with Yunnan province, has created a distinctive cultural tourism brand, capitalising on the Cambodia-China People-to-People Exchange Year. Additionally, the “China Yunnan” news page, which we launched together, keeps readers informed of the latest developments in Cambodia-China cooperation. In-depth interviews with Siem Reap Angkor International Airport and the Cambodia-China “Save the Heart”, a congenital heart disease assistance project, vividly highlight the ironclad friendship between Cambodia and China. On the occasion, Neth Pheaktra gave four recommendations to strengthen the SSAMN – deepen the cooperation mechanism, foster technological innovation, enhance talent cultivation, and enhance the Network’s global influence. Initiated by Yunnan International Communication Centre for South and Southeast Asia and China Daily Asia Pacific, the South and Southeast Asia Media Network was established in Beijing on Jan. 31, 2024, which marks a new chapter in regional media cooperation. This platform not only offers an opportunity for media from various countries to engage and collaborate but also fosters a close-knit community where the members can explore together, share experiences, and progress hand in hand.AKPChina’s Nov bank lending seen doubling as stimulus kicks in

Poet Technologies Announces US$25 Million Registered Direct OfferingFor the first time in 15 years, Hanukkah and Christmas coincide in 2024: The Jewish holiday begins with the first candle lighting at sundown on Christmas Day. These holidays are an important affirmation of our religious heritage. America was established on a biblical worldview, and it can’t survive without it. President Dwight D. Eisenhower said, “Our form of government makes no sense unless it is founded in a deeply felt religious faith, and I don’t care what it is.” Ike was not saying that religious differences are unimportant, but that faith itself is what matters. George Washington — another soldier turned statesman — cautioned in his Farewell Address that “religion and morality are indispensable supports” of political prosperity. His successor, John Adams, said: “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” President Ronald Reagan warned, “If we ever forget that we are one nation under God, then we will be a nation gone under.” Today, we are a nation adrift in a sea of doubt. According to a March Gallup survey, only 30% of Americans now attend religious services regularly, while 56% seldom or never do so. Those who don’t identify with any religion (the “nones”) rose from 13% in 2010 to 21% today. Is it so surprising then that in an Emerson College poll, 41% of adults under 30 said the cold-blooded killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was “acceptable”? This is what comes from not teaching religion to the young but instead allowing them to absorb the values of the secular culture. All of our most intractable problems — including crime, drug abuse and depression — are related to a weakening of faith. In its 12-step program, Alcoholics Anonymous explains: “Accepting a higher power helps you to see life from a different perspective and creates a sense of accountability.” Religious people are happier, healthier and more involved with their family and community. The left, which has an instinctive aversion to religion — Karl Marx called it the “opium of the masses”— keeps casting about for a substitute. The French Revolution created a Cult of Reason to replace Christianity and set up an altar to it in Notre Dame Cathedral. In 2024, the Democratic Party tried to turn democracy (a word found nowhere in America’s founding documents) into a religion. In his 2022 speech at Independence Hall , President Biden indicted his predecessor as a threat to democracy. Mr. Biden used Independence Hall as a prop without any understanding of its real significance. The Declaration of Independence, which was signed there, speaks of unalienable rights endowed by the Creator. If such a document were produced today, progressives would be screaming that the authors had violated the mythical wall separating church and state. Democrats saw the Jan. 6 riot at the US Capitol not as trespass and vandalism but as heresy — the pagans committing acts of sacrilege in the temple of democracy. The failure of their attempts to deify democracy may be seen in the results of the 2024 election: President-elect Donald Trump became the first Republican in 20 years to receive a majority of the popular vote . As supreme allied commander in Europe during World War II, Eisenhower was as responsible as anyone for our victory. When our forces began liberating the death camps, the future president was so moved by the horrors uncovered that he was determined to document them. On April 12, 1945, Eisenhower visited Dachau in the company of Gens. George Patton and Omar Bradley. He wrote to Winston Churchill that the English language didn’t have words to describe what he saw. What he saw was a monument to depravity — to a government based on ideology, in this case, the master race theory — the only alternative to one based on religious values. Modernity has witnessed so many horrific examples of state power driven by ideology — the Reign of Terror, communism, the Holocaust, Islamism (a cult masquerading as a religion) and the soft totalitarianism of diversity, equity and inclusion. During the Revolutionary War, Valley Forge was the low point of the American cause. A famous painting by a contemporary artist shows Washington kneeling in the snow and praying outside the Continental Army’s encampment. Such faith has sustained us in every war and national crisis. The fight to maintain our religious heritage is far more important than tariffs or tax cuts. Adapted from The Washington Times .Quest Partners LLC raised its holdings in AAR Corp.
