The Susquenita School Board has approved a sponsorship agreement with Maguire’s Ford and the Blackhawk Foundation to purchase and install a new video scoreboard at the stadium. In exchange for the donation of the video board, the stadium will be renamed “Maguire Ford Field at Blackhawk Stadium” for a 20-year term. The new equipment features a 10-millimeter pixel resolution for enhanced visual clarity. According to Kellas Wechsler, vice president of the Blackhawk Foundation, “The reasoning behind the 10-millimeter pixels versus eight or smaller, first is a significant price difference, but when you use lower than 10 millimeter, you have to use a different LED bulb, which is lower quality. The 10-millimeter (bulbs) are tried and true and built for outdoor use. Other digital billboards are 16-millimeter. These would be smaller for more precise pictures.” Susquenita High School (Dan Gleiter, PennLive.com/file) There is a seven-year transferable warranty on the scoreboard. District Superintendent Dr. Jon-David Fox said multiple individuals would be trained to operate the new equipment. A member of the public raised questions at the Dec. 10 meeting about the long-term implications of the sponsorship agreement, including potential maintenance costs and influence of business sponsors on school decisions. Fox said the sponsorship involved only the video board and naming rights, with no influence over curriculum or other school operations. He also noted the educational opportunities the scoreboard could provide, particularly for students interested in media and technology. The board discussed the financial strain posed by cybercharter schools. Members emphasized the $3 million annual cost to the district, citing it as a major challenge to maintaining and expanding programs for students. They expressed frustration with the inequities in the current funding system, which requires public school districts to pay tuition rates to cyber charter schools based on their per-student expenditures, regardless of the actual cost of cyber education. Board members called for legislative reform to address the disparities and create a fairer funding system. They noted that the current model disproportionately impacts public school budgets and diverts essential resources from district programs. The need for action, they said, is urgent to prevent further strain on the district’s finances. NEW YORK (AP) — Matt Zona's 15 points off the bench led Fordham to an 87-83 victory over Albany (NY) on Saturday. Zona shot 5 for 7, including 3 for 4 from beyond the arc for the Rams (8-5). Jahmere Tripp added 14 points while shooting 5 of 7 from the field and 3 for 3 from the line while they also had six rebounds and three steals. Jackie Johnson III shot 4 for 14 (1 for 5 from 3-point range) and 4 of 6 from the free-throw line to finish with 13 points. The Great Danes (7-7) were led by Amar'e Marshall, who recorded 24 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals. Albany (NY) also got 19 points, eight rebounds and two steals from Justin Neely. Byron Joshua finished with 16 points and five assists. Josh Rivera scored 11 points in the first half for Fordham, who led 46-35 at halftime. Fordham took the lead for good with 12:53 left in the second half on a 3-pointer from Zona to make it a 57-54 game. Fordham's next game is Tuesday against Saint Louis at home. Albany (NY) hosts Stony Brook on Sunday. The Associated Press created this story using technology provided by Data Skrive and data from Sportradar .An exceptional amount of passing took place throughout the 2024 NTT IndyCar Series season. From road courses to ovals of three different sizes to street circuits, 43 drivers combined to amass 5842 passes across the 17 races. Ovals accounted for the largest portion of the passes, 64 percent in total, which speaks to the thrills delivered at the Indianapolis 500, World Wide Technology Raceway, the Milwaukee Mile, and the Music City Grand Prix at Nashville Speedway. IndyCar accumulated a lot of passing data last year, including total passes and passes for position. The data in the first category for total passes, which include those made when a driver is down one or more laps, is led by A.J. Foyt Racing’s Santino Ferrucci, who had a breakout season in the No. 14 Chevy on the way to placing ninth in the Drivers’ championship, and earned the distinction of being IndyCar’s ‘Passmaster’ for 2024. More IndyCar! The RACER Mailbag, December 25 De Ferran, Lombardi inducted into Team Penske Hall of Fame PREMA sets date for first IndyCar test Ferrucci completed more passes (335) than any other driver, and having been passed 155 times, he also has the best net rating for overtakes (180). Second on the list is Colton Herta, who also had a breakout year with two victories and a surge to second in the championship — his best to date — with the No. 26 Honda. Herta’s passes (315) were countered with being passed 146 times for a net (169) that also ranked second to Ferrucci. Third in total passes went to former Ed Carpenter Racing driver Rinus VeeKay (270/188, net 82); fourth was Andretti’s Kyle Kirkwood (268/169/net 99); fifth was Team Penske’s Scott McLaughlin (256/124/net 131, which was third best), and sixth was former Arrow McLaren driver Alexander Rossi (254/137/net 117, which was fourth best). An important factor to consider in the passing totals was how drivers fared in qualifying. Ferrucci’s average starting position was 14.8, which meant he had plenty of positions to make up at most races. Herta’s average starting spot was 8.6, aided by three poles, which points to a need to overcome in-race issues more often than was desired. For McLaughlin, the best qualifier of the season with five poles and an average start of 6.4, it was a blend of extreme passing to counteract misfortunes and all of the passing performed as the season’s best driver in the laps-led category with 637. While Herta and McLaughlin, who chased home Chip Ganassi Racing’s Alex Palou to the championship, were among the leaders in total passes, the new champ was not, ranking ninth, which can be attributed to an average starting position of 8.4 and an average finish of 6.5. Palou actually trails teammate Scott Dixon and former Juncos Hollinger Racing driver Romain Grosjean in total passes (245/143/net 102), which speaks to his generally good performances in qualifying and staying up front at most races, eliminating the need to rifle through the field on a regular basis. Ferrucci (No.14) gets ready to make a move on Pietro Fitipaldi at Milwaukee. Brett Farmer/Motorsport Images And in the category of passes for position, the leader is... Ferrucci once again, which cements his Passmaster title for the year. Ferrucci (222 passes, passed 106 times, net of 116) tops all drivers in net rating and the total passes for position, and behind him, VeeKay moves forward into second (189/129/net 60) and Herta goes back one spot to third (171/92/net 79) ahead of teammate Kirkwood in fourth (162/121/net 41). Arrow McLaren’s Alexander Rossi was fifth (153/117/net 36) and Former Chip Ganassi driver Linus Lundqvist was sixth (153/139/net 14). Elsewhere, champion Alex Palou was 13th (124/76/net 46), which also speaks to spending most of the season nestled into the lead pack. McLaughlin was 17th in total passes (108/89/net 19), which was an-other testament to how much time he spent in the lead with nobody to pass. “All things considered, I think that we had a hell of a racing season,” Ferrucci told RACER. “We only had one mechanical DNF all year, and then we had only one crash all year. So I think it just goes to show my consistency, and my team’s consistency, and everything that we’ve done.” It’s an honor Ferrucci does not want to receive more than once. “It’s a cool stat to have, but it’s not something that I’m proud of, because while a lot of those passes were pretty awesome, it’s just not something I’d like to see next year. I’d like to be more upfront consistently,” he said. “It’s a bittersweet award, to say the least. I think it is a testament to my ability and skill and racecraft, but also I think that I can do better in other areas. We still did end up ninth in the championship, which is pretty damn good, considering where we brought the team from.” Never lacking in confidence, and as much as he doesn’t want to lead either category in the future, Ferrucci also takes pride in his ability to rack up passes. And at 61 percent, Ferrucci did most of his passing for position on the ovals. “I’m the last guy I’d want to see in my mirrors,” he said. “A lot of those passes that you see were forced errors. They had spotters at one point at Milwaukee going, ‘He’s behind you. There’s nothing you can do.’ I had so much fun.”
Russian President Vladimir Putin listens to a question during a meeting with foreign policy experts at the Valdai Discussion Club in the Black Sea resort of Sochi, Russia, Friday, Nov. 8, 2024. (Maxim Shipenkov/Pool Photo via AP) AP KYIV, Ukraine — NATO and Ukraine will hold emergency talks Tuesday after Russia attacked a central city with an experimental, hypersonic ballistic missile that escalated the nearly 33-month-old war. The conflict is “entering a decisive phase,” Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Friday, and “taking on very dramatic dimensions.” Ukraine’s parliament canceled a session as security was tightened following Thursday’s Russian strike on a military facility in the city of Dnipro. In a stark warning to the West, President Vladimir Putin said in a nationally televised speech that the attack with the intermediate-range Oreshnik missile was in retaliation for Kyiv’s use of U.S. and British longer-range missiles capable of striking deeper into Russian territory. Putin said Western air defense systems would be powerless to stop the new missile. Ukrainian military officials said the missile that hit Dnipro had reached a speed of Mach 11 and carried six nonnuclear warheads each releasing six submunitions. Speaking Friday to military and weapons industries officials, Putin said Russia is launching production of the Oreshnik. “No one in the world has such weapons,” he said with a thin smile. “Sooner or later other leading countries will also get them. We are aware that they are under development.” But he added, “we have this system now. And this is important.” Testing the missile will continue, “including in combat, depending on the situation and the character of security threats created for Russia,” Putin said, noting there is “a stockpile of such systems ready for use.” Putin said that while it isn’t an intercontinental missile, it’s so powerful that the use of several of them fitted with conventional warheads in one attack could be as devastating as a strike with strategic — or nuclear — weapons. Gen. Sergei Karakayev, head of Russia’s Strategic Missile Forces, said the Oreshnik could reach targets across Europe and be fitted with nuclear or conventional warheads, echoing Putin’s claim that even with conventional warheads, “the massive use of the weapon would be comparable in effect to the use of nuclear weapons.” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov kept up Russia’s bellicose tone on Friday, blaming “the reckless decisions and actions of Western countries” in supplying weapons to Ukraine to strike Russia. “The Russian side has clearly demonstrated its capabilities, and the contours of further retaliatory actions in the event that our concerns were not taken into account have also been quite clearly outlined,” he said. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, widely seen as having the warmest relations with the Kremlin in the European Union, echoed Moscow’s talking points, suggesting the use of U.S.-supplied weapons in Ukraine likely requires direct American involvement. “These are rockets that are fired and then guided to a target via an electronic system, which requires the world’s most advanced technology and satellite communications capability,” Orbán said on state radio. “There is a strong assumption ... that these missiles cannot be guided without the assistance of American personnel.” Orbán cautioned against underestimating Russia’s responses, emphasizing that the country’s recent modifications to its nuclear deployment doctrine should not be dismissed as a “bluff.” “It’s not a trick... there will be consequences,” he said. Separately in Kyiv, Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský called Thursday’s missile strike an “escalatory step and an attempt of the Russian dictator to scare the population of Ukraine and to scare the population of Europe.” At a news conference with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, Lipavský also expressed his full support for delivering the necessary additional air defense systems to protect Ukrainian civilians from the “heinous attacks.” He underlined that the Czech Republic will impose no limits on the use of its weapons and equipment given to Ukraine. Three lawmakers from Ukraine’s parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, confirmed that Friday’s previously scheduled session was called off due to the ongoing threat of Russian missiles targeting government buildings in central Kyiv. In addition, there also was a recommendation to limit the work of all commercial offices and nongovernmental organizations “in that perimeter, and local residents were warned of the increased threat,” said lawmaker Mykyta Poturaiev, who added this is not the first time such a threat has been received. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s office continued to work in compliance with standard security measures, a spokesperson said. Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate said the Oreshnik missile, whose name in Russian means “hazelnut tree,” was fired from the Kapustin Yar 4th Missile Test Range in Russia’s Astrakhan region, and flew 15 minutes before striking Dnipro. Test launches of a similar missile were conducted in October 2023 and June 2024, the directorate said. The Pentagon confirmed the missile was a new, experimental type of intermediate-range missile based on its RS-26 Rubezh intercontinental ballistic missile. Thursday’s attack struck the Pivdenmash plant that built ICBMs when Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union. The military facility is located about 4 miles (6 1/2 kilometers) southwest of the center of Dnipro, a city of about 1 million that is Ukraine’s fourth-largest and a key hub for military supplies and humanitarian aid, and is home to one of the country’s largest hospitals for treating wounded soldiers from the front before their transfer to Kyiv or abroad. The stricken area was cordoned off and out of public view. With no fatalities reported from the attack, Dnipro residents resorted to dark humor on social media, mostly focused on the missile’s name, Oreshnik. This article originally appeared on :After almost a decade of entertaining her neighbourhood with a massive lights display, Golden Square's bringer of cheer Janine Dole is calling time on her annual tradition. or signup to continue reading Every year, Janine puts up an interactive display in her front yard and hands out treats to eager children. "It just makes my day to see all the children happy," she said. "I've got nine grandbabies, so I love doing it for them and it just makes me really happy." Two years ago, she raised money for cancer research in honour of her parents, who both died of the disease. As she was getting older, and given the time and money it took to put up a display, Ms Dole said she came to the decision to pull the plug on having a large display. "I'm getting older and I work cleaning every day, five days a week, and I'm just tired," she said. "I get home and we stay out here till about 10.30pm." Although she planned to sell or give away most of her decorations, there was a possibility Ms Dole's daughter Brianna McDonald would pick up the tradition. "She said maybe last year was the last year, and then we had our final baby and she was like 'oh, okay, one more year'," she said. The mum-of-four said was always a special time in Bendigo, with excitement building until December 25. Christmas lights provided a fun - and free - activity for families. "Everything's so expensive, even going and getting Christmas photos can be such a difficult time for families," Ms McDonald said. "It's the end of the year for kids; we've got uniforms and book lists and everything for next year; we've got birthdays, we've got Christmas, we've got everything. "It's just so nice to be able to bring some kind of festive spirit." Neighbour Mary Cuskelly said she'd be sad to see Ms Dole end her tradition. "We live in a court and every year on Christmas Eve the neighbours from every house, and others from the adjoining streets, come together with their fold-up chairs and tables to share food and drinks and to enjoy the spectacle of the lights and to feel the love and friendship of each other at such a wonderful and special time," she said. If this would be her last year, Janine was determined to make it memorable. She has organised a special night featuring an appearance from Mrs Claus, with free photos and gifts, on December 21 from 6.30pm at her house on Taplan Court, Golden Square you won't miss it. Better Semiconductor Stock: Wolfspeed vs. NvidiaNEW YORK/ LONDON :MSCI's global equity gauge was lower on Friday while bond yields climbed as investors waited for clues about the future path for interest rates from next week's U.S. Federal Reserve meeting. In U.S. Treasuries, benchmark 10-year yields rose to a three-week high and were on track for their fifth-straight daily gain as investors bet that Fed chair Jerome Powell will signal a pause in policy easing after a widely expected 25-basis-point rate cut next Wednesday. The U.S. central bank is grappling with inflation staying stubbornly above its 2 per cent annual target. Data released on Thursday showed higher-than-expected U.S. producer prices in November. Friday's data showed U.S. import prices barely rose in November as increases in food and fuel costs were partially offset by decreases elsewhere, thanks to a strong dollar. "The market is assuming that Powell cuts next week and then pauses. I think that's the right assumption because we're seeing a tension between the inflationary data and the labor-market data," said Matt Rowe, head of portfolio management and cross-asset strategies at Nomura Capital Management. While bets on a December rate cut are almost unanimous, CME Group's Fedwatch tool implies just two cuts in 2025. “They have to take into account that in an economy where inflation is showing itself at this point to be sticky, and you're very highly likely going to get further fiscal stimulus, deregulation, and some aspect of tariffs coming through, there's just no way you can validate why you keep cutting in that instance,” said Tom Fitzpatrick, head of global market insights at R.J. O'Brien in New York. While a rally in chipmaker Broadcom boosted Wall Street, the indexes made no strong move in either direction. At 2:59 p.m. EST (1959 GMT), the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 61.58 points, or 0.14 per cent, to 43,852.54, the S&P 500 fell 0.80 points, or 0.01 per cent, to 6,050.55 and the Nasdaq Composite rose 19.33 points, or 0.10 per cent, to 19,922.17. MSCI's gauge of stocks across the globe fell 2.30 points, or 0.26 per cent, to 866.11. Europe's STOXX 600 index closed down 0.53 per cent earlier, breaking a three-week winning streak, as investors sought clarity on Europe's rate policy amid concerns about economic growth and a potential trade war. The yield on benchmark U.S. 10-year notes rose 7.5 basis points to 4.399 per cent, from 4.324 per cent late on Thursday while the 30-year bond yield rose 6.7 basis points to 4.615 per cent. The two-year note yield, which typically moves with Fed-rate expectations, rose 5.5 basis points to 4.241 per cent. In currencies, the dollar eyed its biggest weekly gain in a month on the prospect of slower U.S. rate cuts next year. Sterling fell after a surprise contraction in UK economic activity while the euro clawed back some recent losses in the wake of the European Central Bank's rate cut on Thursday. On the day, the dollar index, which measures the greenback against a basket of currencies, rose 0.04 per cent to 107.00, with the euro up 0.26 per cent at $1.0494. Against the Japanese yen, the dollar strengthened 0.69 per cent to 153.68, having risen all week as traders scaled back bets on a Bank of Japan rate hike next week. In energy markets, oil prices settled at a three-week high on expectations that more sanctions on Russia and Iran could tighten supplies and that lower U.S. and European interest rates could boost fuel demand. U.S. crude settled up 1.8 per cent, or $1.27 at $71.29 a barrel and Brent settled at $74.49 per barrel, up 1.5 per cent or $1.08 on the day. In precious metals, gold fell on the day but was set for a weekly gain. Spot gold fell 1.05 per cent to $2,653.17 an ounce. U.S. gold futures fell 0.96 per cent to $2,661.70 an ounce.
By Steve Contorno and Kristen Holmes for CNN Donald Trump once publicly speculated that Time would never name him the news magazine's "Person of the Year." Now, the honour will be bestowed on him twice. Time will name Trump as this year's choice on Thursday, recognising the president-elect as the individual or group deemed to have wielded the greatest influence on global affairs "for good or for ill." To celebrate the unveiling of the magazine cover, Trump will ring the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange, a source familiar with the matter told CNN. Trump sat for a wide-ranging interview with the magazine last month. Time declined to comment. Trump's 2024 selection mirrors his first recognition in 2016, when Time named him Person of the Year after his unexpected rise to the presidency. This time, the unveiling caps a remarkable comeback and a resurgence that has the potential to upend modern American politics. Despite the magazine's dwindling circulation, Time's Person of the Year remains an annual cultural touchstone and the distinction has become an obsession of sorts for Trump throughout the years. A Time cover naming him Person of the Year in 2009 hung in several of his golf clubs, The Washington Post reported nearly a decade later, though no such issue was ever printed. Through his widely followed Twitter account, Trump regularly weighed in on the annual selection and amplified accounts suggesting it should be him. He criticised the magazine in 2011 for picking "The Protester" in a nod to the revolutions breaking out across the Arab world and the Occupy movement in the US. A year later, he said Time had "lost all credibility" because it failed to list him among its 100 most influential people of the year. Trump has also privately complained about the choices, in particular when Taylor Swift won in 2023. Trump has often been fixated on the power the pop star wields and posted, "I hate Taylor Swift," on social media earlier this year after she endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris. Over time, the title became a symbol of the mainstream fame and respect Trump sought out but appeared out of reach. In 2015, when the magazine named then-German Chancellor Angela Merkel its Person of the Year, he wrote on Twitter, "I told you @TIME Magazine would never pick me as person of the year despite being the big favorite," before adding: "They picked person who is ruining Germany." Even after Time named Trump its person of the year in 2016 - which he called "a great honour" on social media - he continued to closely monitor the results. The following year, Trump claimed he was in the mix for the distinction again but wouldn't agree to an interview and photo shoot. Time disputed his version of events. Despite his regular criticism of the media, Trump has regularly granted access to legacy outlets - including Time . He sat down for an extended interview in April of this year with the magazine at his Palm Beach club. Harris turned down a similar opportunity, the magazine's owner said in October. Over the decades, the title has been granted to a wide array of figures, from heads of state and activists to entrepreneurs and, in some instances, brutal authoritarian leaders. Every US president since Franklin Delano Roosevelt, except Gerald Ford, has been named Person of the Year at least once. President Joe Biden and Harris were co-honorees after they defeated Trump in 2020. Members of Trump's family are expected to attend the Thursday event, including Ivanka Trump, according to a source familiar with planning. It marks a rare public appearance for the president-elect's daughter, who served as a senior adviser during his first term. - CNN

The infrastructure needs of nearly 350 government schools in Dakshina Kannada are mentioned in the new portal ‘Namagaagi’ cf.dakshinakannada.org developed by Dakshina Kannada district administration to facilitate raising of funds for improving infrastructure of government schools. This portal has been developed by Alva’s Institute of Engineering and Technology, Moodbidri. It was officially launched by district in charge Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao during the quarterly Karnataka Development Programme meeting in Mangaluru on December 23. The portal has a list of schools that are classified into Mangaluru North, Mangaluru South, Bantwal, Belthangady, Puttur, Sullia, and Moodibidri blocks. On clicking the photo of the school, brief details about the school, specific needs of the school, and the mobile number of the school headmaster appear. The donor has to select the item he/she wants to donate, where the amount calculated per the prevailing rate appears. After submission, message passes to the headmaster concerned, who will contact the donor to complete the donation process. “We have created the portal that facilitates donors across the country to fund infrastructure needs. Once the articles are purchased or upon completion of construction, the headmaster uploads the picture to the portal. Following an inspection by the concerned Block Education Officer, we send a digitally signed appreciation letter to the donor. We have put in place a transparent system that gives a clear idea to the donor how funds donated were used,” Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer K. Anandh told The Hindu . Dr. Anandh said the portal was conceptualised by Deputy Commissioner M.P. Mullai Muhilan. The infrastructure needs mentioned on the portal are those provided by the school headmasters. Dr. Anandh said infrastructure needs will be continuously updated on the portal. This portal will be in addition to the present way of donors directly donating to schools, he said.
