DES MOINES — Gov. Kim Reynolds appointed state Sen. Chris Cournoyer to be her lieutenant governor Monday, more than three months after her first and only No. 2 in elected office resigned to take over the state bankers association. Cournoyer was elected to the Iowa Senate in 2018 and has a background in technology, having earned a computer science degree, done website design and worked for a tech company. In the Senate, she chaired the Education Budget Committee and was vice chair of the State Government Committee. “She has the character, judgement, and ability needed to serve as governor in case I were ever unable to — qualities that also make her ideally suited to support our work on a day-to-day basis,” Reynolds said in a statement. “I can’t wait to deploy Chris’ extensive experience on key legislative committees, including Ways and Means, and expertise in technology, innovation, and artificial intelligence on a wide range of issues important to Iowans.” Cournoyer is is from LeClaire, in eastern Iowa. Reynolds’ initial running mate, Adam Gregg, resigned his position Sept. 3 after serving more than seven years in office, saying that “my time in public service must come to a close.” The Iowa Bankers Association on the same day announced Gregg as its incoming president and CEO. Reynolds described Gregg as “a tremendous partner.” Iowa law states that the governor must appoint someone to fill the vacancy for the remainder of the term. Reynolds told reporters in early October that she would make a decision on Gregg’s successor after the 2024 election, and the end-of-the-year rollout will allow Cournoyer a few weeks to settle in before joining Reynolds at her annual condition of the state speech after the legislative session begins in January. “We want to get it right, you know, not only for the team, but for Iowans, and so I want to be very thoughtful in how I do that,” Reynolds said in October. President-elect Donald Trump said on Saturday that he wants real estate developer Charles Kushner, father of Mr Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, to serve as ambassador to France. This was a particularly special occasion for the club as it marked 50 years since the club was founded in Newport by the late Barry Clowes. Guests of honour at the celebrations included the Mayor of Newport, Ray Mogford, and his wife Sallie, as well as both of Newport's local MPs Jessica Morden and Ruth Jones. The club chairperson Enid Snelgrove gave a speech telling the history of the club, which was originally founded by Barry as a fee-paying academy for advancing the game of bridge. Sophie Cunningham then told the moving story of how her father Graham Jones inherited the Academy on the death of Barry Clowes, turned it into a members club and moved it into the premises on Clayton Street where it remains to this day. Enid spoke about the effect that Covid has had on the club, and how the club is adapting by moving online. Both Jessica Morden and Ray Mogford also spoke about the importance to Newport of institutions such as the Academy, and looked forwards to a bright future for the club. On that note, Bill Parkinson, the club secretary was keen to let people know that the club is looking for new players and is running lessons. "Bridge is a fantastic way to keep your mind sharp, meet new people, and have fun. We'd encourage anyone with an interest in learning bridge or enhancing their skills to come to our lessons," Bill said. After the 2024 election, Hinckley told his followers to stop with the “negative” comments. “A lot of the comments on my Twitter/X feed have been alarming, so I have to keep reminding people that I am a changed person from the way I was in 1981,” he wrote in a blog post. “My songs are about peace and love and overcoming hard times. A lot of people have told me that listening to my songs helps them get through their day. I strive for positive vibes, not the negativity you see everywhere today,” he added. Hinckley told The New York Times in a July interview that he uses music to “redeem” himself. “People have different definitions of redemption,” Hinckley told The New York Times. “My definition of redemption is to make amends for all the negativity that I created in 1981. I’m trying to redeem myself through positive music, through a thing that people really like — as opposed to the things they really hated about me, in 1981.” He also said in the interview that while he enjoys living in Williamsburg, Va. because people do not bother him, he has thought about living in more music-centered cities like Nashville, Los Angeles or New York. “I’m basically a struggling musician,” he told the Times. “I’ve had a lot of people say to me, ‘John, you’re like so many other struggling musicians.’ And it’s true.
