By HALELUYA HADERO The emergence of generative artificial intelligence tools that allow people to efficiently produce novel and detailed online reviews with almost no work has put merchants , service providers and consumers in uncharted territory, watchdog groups and researchers say. Phony reviews have long plagued many popular consumer websites, such as Amazon and Yelp. They are typically traded on private social media groups between fake review brokers and businesses willing to pay. Sometimes, such reviews are initiated by businesses that offer customers incentives such as gift cards for positive feedback. But AI-infused text generation tools, popularized by OpenAI’s ChatGPT , enable fraudsters to produce reviews faster and in greater volume, according to tech industry experts. The deceptive practice, which is illegal in the U.S. , is carried out year-round but becomes a bigger problem for consumers during the holiday shopping season , when many people rely on reviews to help them purchase gifts. Fake reviews are found across a wide range of industries, from e-commerce, lodging and restaurants, to services such as home repairs, medical care and piano lessons. The Transparency Company, a tech company and watchdog group that uses software to detect fake reviews, said it started to see AI-generated reviews show up in large numbers in mid-2023 and they have multiplied ever since. For a report released this month, The Transparency Company analyzed 73 million reviews in three sectors: home, legal and medical services. Nearly 14% of the reviews were likely fake, and the company expressed a “high degree of confidence” that 2.3 million reviews were partly or entirely AI-generated. “It’s just a really, really good tool for these review scammers,” said Maury Blackman, an investor and advisor to tech startups, who reviewed The Transparency Company’s work and is set to lead the organization starting Jan. 1. In August, software company DoubleVerify said it was observing a “significant increase” in mobile phone and smart TV apps with reviews crafted by generative AI. The reviews often were used to deceive customers into installing apps that could hijack devices or run ads constantly, the company said. The following month, the Federal Trade Commission sued the company behind an AI writing tool and content generator called Rytr, accusing it of offering a service that could pollute the marketplace with fraudulent reviews. The FTC, which this year banned the sale or purchase of fake reviews, said some of Rytr’s subscribers used the tool to produce hundreds and perhaps thousands of reviews for garage door repair companies, sellers of “replica” designer handbags and other businesses. Max Spero, CEO of AI detection company Pangram Labs, said the software his company uses has detected with almost certainty that some AI-generated appraisals posted on Amazon bubbled up to the top of review search results because they were so detailed and appeared to be well thought-out. But determining what is fake or not can be challenging. External parties can fall short because they don’t have “access to data signals that indicate patterns of abuse,” Amazon has said. Pangram Labs has done detection for some prominent online sites, which Spero declined to name due to non-disclosure agreements. He said he evaluated Amazon and Yelp independently. Many of the AI-generated comments on Yelp appeared to be posted by individuals who were trying to publish enough reviews to earn an “Elite” badge, which is intended to let users know they should trust the content, Spero said. The badge provides access to exclusive events with local business owners. Fraudsters also want it so their Yelp profiles can look more realistic, said Kay Dean, a former federal criminal investigator who runs a watchdog group called Fake Review Watch. To be sure, just because a review is AI-generated doesn’t necessarily mean its fake. Some consumers might experiment with AI tools to generate content that reflects their genuine sentiments. Some non-native English speakers say they turn to AI to make sure they use accurate language in the reviews they write. “It can help with reviews (and) make it more informative if it comes out of good intentions,” said Michigan State University marketing professor Sherry He, who has researched fake reviews. She says tech platforms should focus on the behavioral patters of bad actors, which prominent platforms already do, instead of discouraging legitimate users from turning to AI tools. Prominent companies are developing policies for how AI-generated content fits into their systems for removing phony or abusive reviews. Some already employ algorithms and investigative teams to detect and take down fake reviews but are giving users some flexibility to use AI. Spokespeople for Amazon and Trustpilot, for example, said they would allow customers to post AI-assisted reviews as long as they reflect their genuine experience. Yelp has taken a more cautious approach, saying its guidelines require reviewers to write their own copy. “With the recent rise in consumer adoption of AI tools, Yelp has significantly invested in methods to better detect and mitigate such content on our platform,” the company said in a statement. The Coalition for Trusted Reviews, which Amazon, Trustpilot, employment review site Glassdoor, and travel sites Tripadvisor, Expedia and Booking.com launched last year, said that even though deceivers may put AI to illicit use, the technology also presents “an opportunity to push back against those who seek to use reviews to mislead others.” “By sharing best practice and raising standards, including developing advanced AI detection systems, we can protect consumers and maintain the integrity of online reviews,” the group said. The FTC’s rule banning fake reviews, which took effect in October, allows the agency to fine businesses and individuals who engage in the practice. Tech companies hosting such reviews are shielded from the penalty because they are not legally liable under U.S. law for the content that outsiders post on their platforms. Tech companies, including Amazon, Yelp and Google, have sued fake review brokers they accuse of peddling counterfeit reviews on their sites. The companies say their technology has blocked or removed a huge swath of suspect reviews and suspicious accounts. However, some experts say they could be doing more. “Their efforts thus far are not nearly enough,” said Dean of Fake Review Watch. “If these tech companies are so committed to eliminating review fraud on their platforms, why is it that I, one individual who works with no automation, can find hundreds or even thousands of fake reviews on any given day?” Consumers can try to spot fake reviews by watching out for a few possible warning signs , according to researchers. Overly enthusiastic or negative reviews are red flags. Jargon that repeats a product’s full name or model number is another potential giveaway. When it comes to AI, research conducted by Balázs Kovács, a Yale professor of organization behavior, has shown that people can’t tell the difference between AI-generated and human-written reviews. Some AI detectors may also be fooled by shorter texts, which are common in online reviews, the study said. However, there are some “AI tells” that online shoppers and service seekers should keep it mind. Panagram Labs says reviews written with AI are typically longer, highly structured and include “empty descriptors,” such as generic phrases and attributes. The writing also tends to include cliches like “the first thing that struck me” and “game-changer.”NEW YORK (AP) — Kaapo Kaako scored a power-play goal with 24 seconds left, and the New York Rangers stopped a five-game slide by topping the Montreal Canadiens 4-3 on Saturday. Artemi Panarin, Vincent Trocheck and Mika Zibanejad also scored for the Rangers, who got their first win since a 4-3 victory at Vancouver on Nov. 19. 5 prop bets for Eagles vs Rams – Week 13 Sunday Night Football

It's a sure bet that most investors, even those who regularly devour financial media, were until recently not familiar with Heico ( HEI 0.60% ) . The specialty industrial components maker is a decades-old enterprise that operates an unglamorous business and rarely generates attention-grabbing news. Yet it's been quite the outperformer at times, and if anyone likes a solid yet under-the-radar stock , it's Warren Buffett. Heico's relative obscurity ended forever when the master investors at Berkshire Hathaway first took an equity stake in the company earlier this year. Recently, it loaded up on a little more Heico. Here's a look at whether it's a good idea for us to follow Buffett's lead and pick up some of those shares, too. A high-flier that somehow cruised under the radar Heico's roots date back to the late 1950s. The modern company consists of two businesses: the larger flight support group (FSG) and the electronic technologies group (ETG). The former concentrates on providing aftermarket parts and services for many different types of aircraft. As for electronic technologies, the unit does what it says on the label, supplying such components to a range of clients in sectors such as space and defense . In the trailing-12-month period from the third quarter of this year, FSG brought in 67% of the company's $3.8 billion in revenue. Fifty-five percent of that total is derived from the commercial aviation industry. As a company, Heico is an old hand at producing and supplying its wares; it likes to grow through complementary acquisitions too. It isn't shy to point out that its revenues have marched determinedly higher from $26 million in 1990 to that $3.8 billion. It added that headline net income headed upward from $2 million almost 25 years ago to $478 million in the 12 months reaching back from fiscal third quarter. In fact, it has only rarely booked a quarterly net loss. Speaking of the bottom line, Heico recently posted its all-time high quarterly net sales and net income figures (of more than $992 million and over $136 million, respectively) in said quarter. It's little wonder that this unfamous stock has enjoyed quite the bounce this year with savvy investors buying into it eagerly. Although we don't yet know the exact reasoning for Buffett and Berkshire to plow into Heico, we can assume that these most fundamentals-focused of all investors were drawn to that sustained good performance. The celebrated financier and his team are also well aware that we're in a world in which travel has been hotly popular, supporting strong demand from the commercial airline segment. Meanwhile, wars and rising tensions in global hot spots boost the defense sector's business. It doesn't hurt that Heico is also a consistent and reliable dividend payer, having paid semi-annual distributions 92 consecutive times since 1979. The catch is that the company's dividend yield is rather low, at less than 0.1%. Opportune timing Berkshire first loaded up on Heico in the second calendar quarter of this year, amassing a slightly over 1.04 million share stake in the company valued at just over $185 million at the end of that period. It topped this off with a small buy of 5,445 shares the following quarter, at the conclusion of which the full stake in the rising-star stock was worth nearly $214 million. It's notable that while the third-quarter purchase was quite small, it was one of only three equity buys Berkshire made during the three-month stretch. Buffett and his crew were far more busy selling stock than purchasing it, with "only" $1.5 billion in buys against $34.6 billion in divestments. So the fact that it considered adding to that Heico stake at all strongly indicates a high regard for the company. I think that's entirely justified. Heico has demonstrated clearly that it is a very competent, capable business that serves its various client bases well. It's also in a sweet spot where not one, but two of those bases (airlines and defense companies) are currently experiencing timely upswings. The dividend yield could be higher for sure, but that's hardly a dealbreaker. Like Berkshire, I believe Heico stock is a buy these days. The emergence of tools that allow people to efficiently produce novel and detailed online reviews with almost no work has put , service providers and consumers in uncharted territory, watchdog groups and researchers say. have long plagued many popular consumer websites, and Yelp. United lost their second match in a week as Nottingham Forest left Old Trafford with a famous 3-2 win on Saturday evening . The defeat was Amorim’s first at home and followed on the back of a comprehensive 2-0 reverse at Arsenal on Wednesday to leave United languishing in 13th place in the Premier League . They were 1-0 down inside two minutes when Nikola Milenkovic climbed highest to power home a corner for Forest. The ease with which he got a free header inside the United box was concerning after Arsenal scored both of their goals from corners earlier in the week. Amorim explained before the game that Fernandes has taken over from Andreas Georgson as the coach in charge of set pieces – and former Liverpool midfielder Redknapp is not impressed by the defensive set-up he has implemented. “ Manchester United have changed their set piece coach,” he said in a piece of analysis on Sky Sports. “They’ve got a new guy in, that the manager’s brought in. Carlos Fernandes his name is. Another guy was doing it. But this doesn’t work for me. There are a couple of people in the Premier League who you don’t want to mark from set pieces: one of them is Gabriel [Magalhaes] and one has to be Chris Wood. “[Manuel] Ugarte, he must be 5ft 10in maximum, and he’s up against Chris Wood. If that ball comes in there it’s a mismatch and it’s a goal. Nobody in this situation is taking control. There’s not one bit of confidence when I look at it.” Former United centre-back Phil Jones feels that having Diogo Dalot as the first defender on the near post is problematic. He believes that Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt should be positioned more prominently to clear the ball. “There was a real sense of vulnerability, just watching the game, in the crowd,” Jones said. “It was almost infectious, every time the ball went out for a corner you felt that.” He added: “I think he's got a clear identity of how he wants to play, I think he's got a clear message of how he wants every individual player to be in possession, out of possession, that will take time. “He's alluded to the fact that it will take time to implement his style and the way he wants to go about things. But I do think if you're going to concede goals like they have and set plays then they're going to find it increasingly difficult.” When asked who was to blame for the poor organisation from the corner, Amorim told Sky Sports: "This is more my fault, because I'm responsible. And we tried to do it in the best way. We did a lot of work in this area, because we saw it in Arsenal. It was really hard.” United striker Rasmus Hojlund said: "Annoying goals of course, we need to do better, specifically on corners, we've conceded too much now but I'm sure we'll improve.” Join our new MAN UTD WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Manchester United content from Mirror Football. South Korean prosecutors have arrested ex-defence Minister Kim Yong-hyun over his alleged role in President Yoon Suk Yeol's declaration of martial law, Yonhap News Agency says. or signup to continue reading Kim, who offered his resignation on Wednesday, was seen as a central figure in Tuesday's brief martial law declaration. A senior military official and filings to impeach Yoon by opposition members said Kim had made the proposal to Yoon. Yoon survived an impeachment vote in parliament on Saturday, prompted by his short-lived attempt to impose martial law, but the leader of his own party said the president would eventually have to step down. The prosecution's special investigative team has questioned Kim, who voluntarily appeared at the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office at around 1:30am on Sunday (3:30am AEDT), the report said. The office was not immediately available for comments. Three minority opposition parties filed a complaint with the prosecution against Yoon, Kim and martial law commander Park An-su, accusing them of treason. Kim faces a travel ban as prosecutors investigate, Yonhap said. The national police are also investigating claims of treason against Yoon and top ministers. Yoon shocked the nation on Tuesday night when he gave the military sweeping emergency powers to root out what he called "anti-state forces" and obstructionist political opponents. He rescinded the order six hours later, after parliament defied military and police cordons to vote unanimously against the decree. Yoon's martial law declaration plunged South Korea, Asia's fourth-largest economy and a key US military ally, into its greatest political crisis in decades, threatening to shatter the country's reputation as a democratic success story. Eric Adams’ kid hosted a holiday bash at the mayor’s residence over the weekend — promoting the release of his new tunes after a 9/11 recording session . Hizzoner’s 29-year-old son, Jordan Coleman, performed for dozens of guests on the Upper East Side on Sunday, according to a slew of social media posts from the cocktail-attire-required soiree. It wasn’t immediately clear which tracks Coleman performed under his moniker, Jayoo. Nearly all of his guests had their phones out recording the performance. Those in attendance said the party was meant to ring in the holiday season with Coleman’s newest tunes. The mayor did make a brief appearance, noted political reporter Katie Honan, who first posted about the party . The aspiring rapper and filmmaker last made headlines in September when he hosted his 9/11 sessions at Gracie before attending a Jeezy concert with the radio host “Ogee Money,” according to social media posts. The first son’s first album dropped last December , dubbed simply “JORDAN.” One Democratic source was shocked the mayor’s son hosted the holiday gathering — considering the ongoing scandals at the police department , the indictment of Adams’ longtime aide Ingrid Lewis-Martin and the historic indictment Adams himself is facing. “I can’t believe he’d throw a party at a time like this,” the source said. City Hall, though, brushed off any concern, telling The Post that Gracie Mansion is the mayor’s house and his son was simply hosting a party there — as kids do in their parents’ home. The spokesperson added that Coleman was covering the cost of all food and alcohol served at the party as well as any staff who worked the event.

Novak Djokovic is a 24-time grand slam title winner, Olympic gold medallist and a 99-time ATP competition winner. So why, at 37 years old, does the best tennis player in the world, and arguably in the history of the sport, need a coach? Long relationship ... Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic when they played doubles together at the Australian Open in 2006. Credit: Getty Images It was a surprise when Djokovic named long-time rival Andy Murray as his new coach – a player Djokovic had a 69 per cent win record against – and the duo are set to make their debut at the Brisbane International in January before Djokovic heads to the Australian Open to chase his 25th grand slam title. But former champion-turned-Nine commentator Todd Woodbridge says the pairing isn’t as strange as it seems. “It’s intriguing. Andy Murray for me is this generation’s Lleyton Hewitt, and Ken Rosewell before him, and I say that because they just live, eat, breathe tennis,” Woodbridge says. “Andy can’t keep away from it.” Murray retired from professional tennis in 2024 as a three-time grand slam champion and two-time Olympic gold medallist. And while Djokovic had the upper hand in their head-to-head matches, beating Murray 25 of the 36 times they played, Woodbridge says Murray was the same calibre of athlete. “Andy played everyone that Novak is going to be playing against. So, they’ll be drawing up strategy, game plan, tactics, and what they’ve got to do is find ways for Novak to win matches really quickly, succinctly, keeping energy in the tank, and I think that’s part of the reason he’s been brought along. “But, you know, there’s one more [reason], which is very obvious, and that’s that Novak has had people around him in his last two coaching roles that have been there, done it... So that’s Boris Becker and Goran Ivanisevic. It is impossible to hire someone to come in and tell him things, when he’s already done more than they have. And Andy is on a parallel [with] him.Leading EV battery maker sounds alarm in Chapter 11 bankruptcy

Black Friday sales boosted household spending in November and customers were shopping up a storm in one particular category. or signup to continue reading Spending on household goods saw the largest increase, according to Commbank's latest spending insights, up nearly 6 per cent for the month. A 30 per cent increase in spending at men's and women's clothing stores was the main driver, as customers made the most of pre-Christmas discounts. Spending at retailers exclusively selling women's clothing rose 22 per cent for the month. Overall Commbank's household spending index was up 1.3 per cent in November, . There were gains in eight of the 12 spending categories measured by the bank. The report, which collects de-identified payment data from millions of Commbank users, determined that Black Friday sales significantly impacted November spending habits. Commonwealth Bank chief economist Stephen Halmarick said sales for October and November were collectively up 2 per cent compared with last year. "We're seeing Black Friday and holiday spending shift earlier as retailers entice shoppers with early discounts on discretionary items," he said. Spending on hospitality, including restaurants and food delivery, also rose in November, up 2.2 per cent, followed by a 1.7 per cent boost in spending on food and beverage goods, which includes groceries and alcohol. In the previous month recreation was the biggest driver . Since then, spending in the recreation category fell 2.2 per cent in November. Spending on utilities, such as electricity and gas bills, and transport also declined in November. Mr Halmaric said spending would likely drop in December following the sales period, as has been observed in previous years. As seen in previous months, there were vast differences in spending habits based on home ownership status. Renters increased their spending by just 0.4 per cent, compared with mortgage holders whose spending was up 1.6 per cent. People who own their home outright spent the most in November, up 2.7 per cent. Mr Halmarick said it was unlikely there would be a substantial increase in household spending until the interest rates begin falling. After the Reserve Bank kept the cash rate on hold in December, most economists have pushed . "Our base case is a start to rate cuts in February 2025, but with a clear risk that this is delayed until later this year," Mr Halmarick said. Federal agents have accused 14 information technology (IT) workers this week of funding North Korean weapons programs. The FBI in St. Louis, Missouri, announced on Thursday that 14 North Korean nationals were indicted in a scheme that involved the funneling of their wages to finance the development of different weapons in North Korea. The Indictment The scheme involving thousands of IT workers brought in more than $88 million for the North Korean government, according to Ashley T. Johnson, special agent in charge of the FBI's St. Louis office. Speaking at a news conference, Johnson added that the workers not only funneled their earnings but also stole sensitive company information or leveraged it to demand extortion payments. The victims included companies and individuals across the U.S., including Missouri, who had their identities stolen, Johnson said. The indictments, filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in St. Louis, charge all 14 defendants with wire fraud, money laundering, identity theft and related offenses. The majority of the accused are believed to be in North Korea, and Johnson admitted that bringing them to justice will be a challenge. To aid the effort, the U.S. State Department is offering a $5 million reward for information leading to the arrest of any of the suspects. The Scheme Following the indictment, the federal agents outlined how the scheme was played out by the 14 individuals. North Korea sent thousands of IT workers to secure remote or freelance positions with U.S. companies, often using stolen identities to do so. In some cases, they paid Americans to allow access to their home Wi-Fi networks or to pose as the workers during on-camera job interviews. Johnson emphasized that the FBI is also targeting these "domestic enablers" involved in the scheme. "This is just the tip of the iceberg," Johnson said. "If your company has hired fully remote IT workers, more likely than not, you have hired or at least interviewed a North Korean national working on behalf of the North Korean government," Johnson said. Efforts Against North Korea In recent years, the Justice Department has worked to uncover and disrupt a range of criminal schemes designed to support the North Korean regime, including efforts to fund its nuclear weapons program. In 2021, the Justice Department charged three North Korean computer programmers, members of the country's military intelligence agency, in connection with a series of global cyberattacks allegedly conducted on behalf of the regime. At the time, law enforcement officials emphasized that North Korea's hacking operations were primarily profit-driven—a stark contrast to nations like Russia, China and Iran, which typically focus on espionage, intellectual property theft or undermining democratic systems. In May 2022, the State Department, Treasury Department and FBI issued a joint advisory that warned about North Koreans seeking employment while posing as foreign nationals. The advisory highlighted that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un 's regime "has placed increased focus on education and training" in IT-related fields. Johnson urged companies to carefully vet remote IT hires, especially when verifying their identities. "One of the ways to help minimize your risk is to insist current and future IT workers appear on camera as often as possible if they are fully remote," Johnson said. :Photoshop maker Adobe forecast fiscal 2025 revenue below Wall Street estimates on Wednesday, suggesting the company's investments to weave AI into its software applications were taking longer than expected to bear fruit. Shares of the San Jose, California-based company fell nearly 8 per cent in extended trading. The company forecast annual revenue for 2025 between $23.30 billion and $23.55 billion, compared with estimates of $23.78 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. Adobe expects foreign exchange volatility and the company's shift towards subscriptions to cut into its fiscal 2025 revenue by about $200 million. The company is making significant investments in AI-driven image and video generation technologies in response to the growing competition from well-capitalized startups such as Stability AI and Midjourney. While Adobe projected strong growth for the second half of the year in June, its forecast on Wednesday indicated the company was still struggling to monetize its AI push. Adobe last year launched Firefly, a family of generative AI models that is integrated into its various applications and products. Last month, the company added software tools that let customers use AI to create images based on Adobe's library of stock images. It forecast first-quarter revenue between $5.63 billion and $5.68 billion, which fell short of estimates of $5.73 billion. Adobe's fourth-quarter revenue rose 11 per cent to $5.61 billion from a year ago, beating market expectations of $5.54 billion.

Article content An Iranian mothership? Alien activity? Overly-dedicated hobbyists? Recommended Videos These are just a few of the theories being floated about the witness sightings of large, mysterious drones flying over New Jersey in recent weeks, spooking residents and prompting state lawmakers to demand answers from Washington about where the drones are coming from and if they pose any harm. The Newark office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, state police and New Jersey office of Homeland Security and Preparedness have said witnesses over the past several weeks have described seeing “a cluster of what look to be drones and a possible fixed wing aircraft.” Local authorities are calling on the public to report any information they might have. The drones have been spotted hovering above critical infrastructure such as water reservoirs, electric transmission lines, rail stations, police departments and military installations, Florham Park Chief of Police, Joseph Orlando, said in a Facebook post. Sightings have been occurring nightly, beginning just after sunset and lasting into the early hours of the morning, he added. “At this time we have no evidence that these activities are coming from a foreign entity or the work of a foreign adversary,” deputy Pentagon press secretary Sabrina Singh said during a Wednesday briefing. “These are not U.S. military drones.” On Thursday, the White House downplayed concerns, saying they appear to be legally operated aircrafts, and the FBI and U.S. Department of Homeland Security said they have not corroborated any of the reported visual sightings with electronic detection methods. Over the next few days, New Jersey will be receiving technology with drone specific radar from the federal government, according to state lawmakers. The sightings have sparked concern and conspiracies from both sides of the political aisle, similar to last year’s spy balloon incident from China that confounded civilians and legislators across the U.S. Outcry from Republicans and Democrats alike became so rampant at the time that officials had no choice but to postpone the first high-level visit to China in several years. U.S. Representative Jeff Van Drew of New Jersey suggested Iranian involvement in a Wednesday hearing and urged the federal government to bolster its security and aviation technology to avoid potential harm from the drones. The Pentagon has denied his assertion about Iran. State and local authorities have confirmed the sightings, prompting the FBI to open an investigation and the Federal Aviation Administration to impose flight restrictions over certain locations, including Trump National Golf Club Bedminster, according to U.S. Senator Cory Booker. He called on the FBI, Homeland Security and the FAA to brief local officials as soon as possible about what they know about the unexplained drone activity. National Security Council Spokesman John Kirby told reporters Thursday that there’s no evidence that the reported drone sightings pose a security risk or of any drones entering restricted airspace. “We have not been able to — and neither have state or local law enforcement agencies — corroborate any of the reported visual sightings,” Kirby said at a White House briefing. “It appears that many of the reported sightings are actually manned aircraft that are being operated lawfully.” Kirby said the ordeal highlights a gap in jurisdiction and urged Congress to pass legislation to expand “counter-drone authorities” to make it easier to spot and respond to issues. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, a Democrat, has tried to soothe concerns by saying that authorities at all levels of government have not seen any threat to public safety or any evidence that there are lifeforms on the drones. Shoot Down “Let’s not fear monger. There are a lot of conspiracy theories,” Murphy said in a call-in radio interview earlier this week. But he’d like to see the federal government take a more “robust role” and he wouldn’t be opposed to the feds taking action including shooting one of the drones down, he added. Some residents are taking matters into their own hands to uncover the truth. A Facebook group called “New Jersey Mystery Drones” focused on solving the mystery behind the drones has amassed nearly 32,000 members, with people from across the state recounting their experience with the drones or expressing their fear about what their presence could possibly mean. The New Jersey Senate Republican Caucus sent a letter to Murphy Thursday morning demanding more immediate federal action. “You must insist that the Biden Administration immediately provide the necessary tools and resources to protect our state — including the authority to neutralize any drone that poses a threat,” wrote Republicans led by Senator Anthony Bucco in the letter. — With assistance from Akayla Gardner and Josh Wingrove.

Article content Vernon Fiddler scratched and clawed his way to almost 900 NHL games as a dogged, heart-and-soul centre after everybody passed on him come NHL Draft time. But Fiddler’s son Blake, 17, in his second junior season with Fiddler’s hometown Edmonton Oil Kings, will likely be a first-round pick this upcoming June. Blake looks today like what every NHL team is after—a right-shot, possible top-4 defender with impressive size (six-foot-four, 210 pounds). He could go in the No. 20 range in the 2025 draft after he was the first player taken in the WHL’s U.S. import priority draft in 2022, but before the draft next summer, Blake will be auditioning as alternate captain of the CHL rep team against the U.S. Development Program squad in a much-anticipated, highly-scouted two-game series in Ontario—in London Tuesday, in Oshawa Wednesday. The Canada-U.S. exhibition series could feature as many as 15 potential first-round choices in the 2025 draft, so half of the first round, and Fiddler is one of those who brings a lot to the table. “He’ll play in the NHL, probably as a support player to a No. 3, a second-pairing guy. He really defends well, plays within himself. Yeah, he’s going in the first round I would say,” assessed a long-time NHL amateur scout. The scouts will be watching—ex-Oiler captain Shawn Horcoff’s son Will, a forward, will be on the U.S. team, a nice twist because Will and Blake used to hang out at the Dallas Stars rink when Horcoff, now Detroit Red Wings’ assistant GM, and Fiddler were playing for the Stars. Blake’s pro pops Vern, 44, who lives in the Dallas area after playing for the Stars, and is in the residential real estate business, is more dad than instructor these days even if he coached Blake on rep teams in the 10-gallon Texas minor hockey market. Vern’s certainly keen on the Canada-U.S. bragging rights matchup this week but more the Oil Kings because it’s where Vern grew up. When the Oil Kings drafted Blake, it didn’t get any better than that. “Everything has just fallen into place,” said Vern, whose mother Pat looks after Blake at a townhouse in Sherwood Park that Vern bought for the family. “There were opportunities with the U.S. Development program for Blake but we started talking with the Oil Kings the January of his (import) draft year and we always looked at him playing junior,” said Vern, who was in the WHL once upon a time. “We wanted him in a big city so it would be easier for us to come and watch him. I was honest upfront and told the Kings (before the import draft) that I would like it if it was Seattle or Spokane (for better U.S. travel) but Edmonton would be perfect for my brothers and sisters there. “When it came to fruition and they took Blake, it was almost too good to be true.” Familiar surroundings for Blake. “We came up to Edmonton lots when I was younger, spent a couple of Christmases here and we would also be here in the summer. I’m pretty familiar with the city,” said Blake. “Living with my grandma, it’s awesome. She loves and so I do. I get great meals.” In an age when all NHL clubs are looking for offensive young D, Blake doesn’t fall into that realm. But he’s a right shot, something all teams crave for on the back-end. He’s a big teenage body, a player who shoos opposing players away from his net, and is an excellent, efficient skater. “For me it starts in the D zone, when I’m defending hard, making good first passes. That leads to getting my legs going, joining the rush. But the D zone...that’s a priority of mine,” said Blake, who is averaging about 22 minutes a game with the Oil Kings, and has had several phone calls and Zoom calls with NHL clubs already. He’s much taller than his dad, who is 5’11”. “I think I get my height from my mum’s side. Her side of the family is Croatian and my great grandpa was seven feet apparently and I have a cousin who played basketball and is 6’10”, said Blake. Being the son of a former NHLer always leads to questions about having a leg up on what being a pro is all about, of course. “It’s definitely an advantage. I was lucky that my kids caught the last four or five years of my NHL career and they remember the rinks, the dressing room, the morning skates. These kids soak everything in. They see dad cold-tubbing, and they’re curious about what that does,” said Vern. “Sometimes I question whether it was the right thing to get my kids into hockey but when you grow up around dressing rooms, you see your dad working out all the time, stretching, eating the right things,” said Vern. “Don’t get me wrong, there’s a lot of parents doing the right thing but it’s definitely an advantage (apple falling not far from the tree). And in the summers, you’re working out, or shooting pucks in the garage.” “It’s your line of work and the mental side, that’s the biggest part...being able to tell them what to hang onto and what not. We had other dads (NHL players) around too. Ray Whitney’s boy, Horcoff’s son, Travis Moen’s youngster,” he said. All good stuff for Blake. “My dad played in the NHL for a long time and I’ve got to spend a lot of time around pros, seeing how they prepare and play. It’s pretty cool,” said Blake. “From a young age, I’ve seen how hard NHLers work in the gym and it leads to their success on the ice.” ‘I coached him...but I’m his dad forever’ Blake never felt behind the 8-ball, growing up in Dallas, rather than in hockey-mad Canada. “We were on the planes a lot, we would have about 12 tournaments a year (rep hockey) and we would skate pretty much every day. I knew I was always getting enough work in,” said Blake. Seconded by dad Vern. “In the summers now Blake’s able to train at the Dallas Stars facility which is just down the street from where we live. He’s bumping elbows with Jamie Benn and skating with Wyatt Johnston. It’s not just me he’s learning from. He’s keeping an eye on Jamie or Tyler Seguin in the gym,” said Vern. “Yeah, later in the summers I’ve been able to skate with those guys (Benn, Johnston, Kevin Connauton), seeing what I could take away from those guys,” said Blake. Trying to steal some of their tricks of the trade? “For sure,” said Blake, with a knowing smile. Fiddler steadfastly has allowed to breathe. No telling him what he did wrong in the car after games. “When I was coaching him we had a rule. We just talked at the rink and once we got in the car if Blake asked me something I would talk, but I grew up in a family where everything was positive. In the car, it was always ‘You had a great game.’ If you had a bad game, you evaluated that yourself,” said Vern. “I coached him a little bit but I’m his dad forever.” “Blake can reach out to me and ask questions and I will give him information,” said Vern. “Sometimes it’s more honest than he would like it to be but I’m not there attacking him.” “I”ve tried to step away and the coaching staff is just outstanding (Luke Pierce, Devan Praught, Kyle Chipchura and Ladislav Smid),” he said. “He’s a long way from home but Luke and (GM) Kirt Hill are looking after him. He’s in good hands and it’s taken a lot of stress off us.” “It’s allowed me to be a dad,” said Vern. And Blake is living the hockey dream like his pops. Google forges ahead with its next generation of AI technology while fending off a breakup threatTyrese Hunter tossed in a game-high 26 points to lead Memphis to a 99-97 upset victory over No. 2 UConn on Monday in the first round of the Maui Invitational in Lahaina, Hawaii. Hunter, who played at Iowa State and Texas before transferring to Memphis, made eight field goals with 7-of-10 3-point shooting. The Tigers (5-0) connected on 12 of their 22 3-point attempts in the win. The loss ended a 17-game winning streak dating back to last season for UConn (4-1), the two-time defending national champions. UConn's Hassan Diarra made a free throw to cut the Memphis lead to 99-97 with 2.2 seconds left. He intentionally missed the second free throw and collected the loose ball, but his desperation shot was off the mark. It was 92-92 when UConn's Liam McNeeley was called for an offensive foul with 40.3 seconds left. UConn coach Dan Hurley received a technical for arguing the foul call, and PJ Carter made all four free throws to give the Tigers a four-point lead. Memphis, which squandered a 13-point lead with four minutes to play in regulation, received 22 points from PJ Haggerty, 19 from Colby Rogers and 14 from Dain Dainja. Memphis will play the winner of Monday night's game between Colorado and Michigan State in Tuesday's semifinals. UConn will face the loser of that contest. Tarris Reed Jr. had a team-high 22 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for UConn before he fouled out with 3:18 to play. He made 10 of his 13 field goal attempts. Alex Karaban added 19 points for the Huskies. Jaylin Stewart scored a career-high 16 points, Diarra had 12 and McNeeley added 10. UConn trailed 82-79 after Diarra made two free throws with 24.2 seconds to play in regulation. The Huskies then forced a turnover and tied the game on a 3-pointer by Solo Ball with 1.2 on the clock. Although Memphis shot 56.5 percent from the field (13 for 23) and 50 percent from 3-point territory (5 for 10) in the first half, the game was tied 40-40 after 20 minutes. Neither team led by more than six points in the half. UConn received 29 points from its bench in the first half. Reed scored 15 of those points and Stewart supplied the other 14. --Field Level Media

The City of Toronto is giving seniors early access to its recreational programs for the winter months. Registration for the city's winter programs opens next week, but for the first time, seniors are being given early access to sign up starting Tuesday morning. Mayor Olivia Chow says it's to help seniors keep from feeling isolated in the cold winter months. She says the city has heard from seniors looking for social activities to help stay healthy and engaged during the winter months but found themselves frustrated because the city's programs were often full. "As mayor, my priority is to make sure that all Torontonians, no matter their age, have access to the programs in order to stay active, engaged and connected," Chow said "This early registration gives seniors a chance to secure a spot they've been looking forward to." Residents aged 60 and up will be able to register for the city's winter programs starting Nov. 26 at 10 a.m. For all other residents, registration for winter recreation programs in Etobicoke, York, Toronto and East York opens at 7 a.m. on Dec. 3, while registration for programs in North York and Scarborough opens at 7 a.m. on Dec. 4. People can sign up online, by phone or at any city-run community centre across the city.

A wonderful and refreshing change from the usual holier-than-thou rants about progressive insanity or conservative evil. The rants are now tedious. This was the opposite to me. Uplifting, giving me a smile, and relatable. What son or daughter hasn’t gotten sideways with Mom because we did something young and stupid? Just a wonderful thing to read. Michael Heiser, Eden Prairie ••• I read with some perplexity the expressions of horror over suggesting that cannabis could be a part of Thanksgiving celebrations (Readers Write, Dec. 2). A simple substitution illustrates it better: “Apparently there are people who want to add the odor of [alcohol] to the smell of turkey and pumpkin pie. ... What will the safe dose be for the children at the feast? How will anyone keep the little ones away if everyone is so mellow? What will be the safe dose for the designated drivers driving, or staggering away, from grandmother’s house?” If you’re serving alcohol at your own Thanksgiving celebration, don’t presume to lecture others about cannabis. Steve Hoffmann, Anoka ••• First, to the Minnesota Star Tribune Editorial Board regarding a quote from “Thankful, mindful, hopeful, realistic” (editorial, Nov. 28): “Be thankful for free and fair elections, and for the peaceful transfer of presidential power that has endured throughout our nation’s history.” You all must have missed the insurrection and the unpeaceful transfer of power following the 2020 election. Second, I also agree with the writer of “Let’s take it a step further” (Readers Write, Nov. 28) that civics should be taught in schools. Marla Riemer, Maple Grove Keep holding Trump accountable There were two versions of Donald Trump’s call with Mexico. Thanks to the Minnesota Star Tribune for making this front-page news (”2 versions of Trump call with Mexico,” Nov. 29). MAGA media was already trying to promote Trump as a brilliant negotiator with his 25% tariff gambit, supposedly causing Mexico’s president Claudia Sheinbaum to cave in to his demands. The truth is, Mexico had already responded to President Joe Biden’s negotiations that resulted in a 75% reduction in border apprehensions since December 2023. I trust the Star Tribune will also continue to call out Trump, the consummate credit-grabber, for claiming he is responsible for the infrastructure transformation, new factories being built, significant job gains and huge private investments that are the result of Biden’s Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and CHIPS and Science Act. Please keep reminding people of all the promises that Trump made to the workers of this country that he will not keep, while he makes sure his billionaire buddies get their tax breaks made permanent. The Bremer management team has strong integrity and character and, importantly, expert judgment about what is best for the shareholders, employees and communities Bremer serves. While it’s easy to think prior arrangements that never had firm footing would have been better, litigation caused a change in approach, or remaining independent is better for Minnesota, Ramstad fails to address the fundamental shifts occurring in the banking industry. Progressing regulation, rapidly advancing technology and intense competition are leading all banks to re-evaluate their strategy, and consolidation is a critical element of improving scale that addresses the numerous environmental challenges. What is best for Minnesota is a solid and competitive banking sector, and I am confident Old National and Bremer will help ensure this. Benefiting from my 35-year career in banking, this is how Bremer’s shareholders, employees and communities will succeed. Elliot Jaffee, Minneapolis The writer is the former executive vice president of U.S. Bank. Well, I’m staying I have read with amusement the recent debate on the opinion pages between people vowing to either keep or cancel their subscriptions to the Star Tribune. It amazes me the degree to which people become exercised and the myriad subjects that push their buttons. Well, I’m staying. Even though the agenda and mission of the Star Tribune’s columnists and the great majority of the Editorial Board are anathema to me, I’m continuing to subscribe as a tip of the cap to the great Chinese general and military strategist Sun Tzu, who is credited with saying, “Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.” I want to keep learning what you guys are up to. Phil Larsen, Dayton ••• I was initially confused about why a reader suggested the paper should try to make conservatives smile by covering stories about criminals, grocery prices and student loans ( “Switch up your coverage,” Readers Write, Nov. 30). However, I’m trying to lean into Becky Kennedy’s advice in her book “Good Inside” about making the MGI (most generous interpretation) about someone’s behavior. I’m going to assume the reader simply does not have time to read the entire paper every day. For example, on Nov. 29 the front page featured a picture of two siblings serving a meal to a guest at a homeless shelter who had two cats on their shoulders (”On Thanksgiving, furry family gets a seat at the table”). Big smile from my four-year-old daughter when I showed her. Strib Voices featured a couple celebrating fifty years of marriage and their meet-cute story ( ” ‘Where did you meet?’ It was my 157th visit to the Joint Bar, and it was Mary’s first ... “ ). Big smile from me, an unabashed romantic comedy lover. Below that article was a holiday memory of two young sisters from 1960 that I shared with my mom ( ”A Christmas lunch in Minneapolis, 64 years ago” ). She texted back saying it brought back a “feel good feeling” from her own childhood. If those were not enough, I find Arlo and Janis, F Minus, and Pearls Before Swine (notice I left out Doonesbury!) often bring a nonpolitical smile to my face most days. I believe there are plenty of subjects that would make folks across the political spectrum smile in this paper, if one is lucky enough to have the time. Joe Kennealy, Eden Prairie More than meets the tie I attended the recent Gophers-Nanooks hockey game that your paper reported as simply ending in a “tie” ( “U shoots plenty, settles for tie,” Nov. 30). This description understates a great match that went into double overtime and ultimately a shootout. As a grandfather who went with his grandsons, we witnessed an excitement that built throughout the overtime periods. While the game is officially recorded as a tie for NCAA tournament purposes, the teams played through additional overtime periods and a shootout to determine crucial conference points. This distinction explains why the score appeared as a tie in your reporting, despite the game’s dramatic extended conclusion. There’s no way that those of us at 3M Arena at Mariucci experienced a tie — we experienced a game that deserved nuanced coverage. Future reporting might better serve your readers by explaining both the official result and the exciting conclusion that determined conference points. Andy Halper, EdinaBISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota regulators approved permits Thursday for underground storage of carbon dioxide delivered through a massive pipeline proposed for the Midwest, marking another victory for a project that has drawn fierce opposition from landowners. The governor-led Industrial Commission voted unanimously to approve permits for Summit Carbon Solutions’ three proposed storage sites in central North Dakota. Summit says construction of the project would begin in 2026 with operations beginning in 2027, but it’s expected that resistant landowners will file lawsuits seeking to block the storage plans. “With these permits, we’re one step closer to providing vital infrastructure that benefits farmers, ethanol producers, and communities across the Midwest," Summit Executive VP Wade Boeshans said in a statement. Summit’s proposed 2,500-mile (4,023-kilometer), $8 billion pipeline would transport planet-warming CO2 emissions from 57 ethanol plants in North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota and Nebraska for underground storage. Carbon dioxide would move through the pipeline in a pressurized form to be injected deep underground into a rock formation. The company has permits for its route in North Dakota and Iowa but can’t yet begin construction. Also on Thursday, Minnesota regulators approved a permit for a 28-mile (45-kilometer) leg of the project in western Minnesota. Summit also recently applied in South Dakota, where regulators denied the company’s previous application last year. Last month, the company gained approval for its North Dakota route , and Iowa regulators also have given conditional approval. Summit faces several lawsuits related to the project, including a North Dakota Supreme Court appeal over a property rights law related to the underground storage plan. Further court challenges are likely. North Dakota Republican Gov. Doug Burgum, who chairs the Industrial Commission, is President-elect Donald Trump's choice for Interior Secretary and to lead a new National Energy Council. Burgum has frequently touted North Dakota's underground carbon dioxide storage as a “geologic jackpot.” In 2021, he set a goal for the No. 3 oil-producing state to be carbon-neutral by 2030. His term ends Saturday. Summit's storage facilities would hold an estimated maximum of 352 million metric tons of CO2 over 20 years. The pipeline would carry up to 18 million metric tons of CO2 per year to be injected about 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) underground, according to an application fact sheet. Jessie Stolark, who leads a group that supports the project and includes Summit, said the oil industry has long used similar technology. “We know that this can be done safely in a manner that is protective of human health and underground sources of drinking water,” said Stolark, executive director of the Carbon Capture Coalition. Summit's project has drawn the ire of landowners around the region. They oppose the potential taking of their property for the pipeline and fear a pipeline rupture releasing a cloud of heavy, hazardous gas over the land. A North Dakota landowners group is challenging a property rights law related to the underground storage, and attorney Derrick Braaten said they likely would challenge the granting of permits. “The landowners that I'm working with aren't necessarily opposed to carbon sequestration itself,” Braaten said. “They're opposed to the idea that a private company can come in and use their property without having to negotiate with them or pay them just compensation for taking their private property and using it.” Carbon capture projects such as Summit's are eligible for lucrative federal tax credits intended to encourage cleaner-burning ethanol and potentially result in corn-based ethanol being refined into jet fuel. Some opponents argue the amount of greenhouse gases sequestered through the process would make little difference and could lead farmers to grow more corn despite environmental concerns about the crop. In Minnesota, regulators granted a route permit that would connect an ethanol plant in Fergus Falls to Summit’s broader network. They attached several conditions, including requirements that Summit first begin construction in North Dakota. An administrative law judge who conducted hearings concluded in November that the environmental impacts from the Minnesota segment would be minimal and noted that Summit has secured agreements from landowners along most of the recommended route. Environmental groups that oppose the project disputed the judge’s finding that the project would have a net benefit for the environment. Iowa regulators required Summit to obtain approvals for routes in the Dakotas and underground storage in North Dakota before it can begin construction in Iowa. The Iowa Utilities Commission's approval sparked lawsuits related to the project. In Nebraska, where there is no state regulatory process for CO2 pipelines, Summit is working with individual counties to advance its project. At least one county has denied a permit. Karnowski reported from Minneapolis.

The move follows public criticism of the report from the U.S. ambassador to Israel. The rare public dispute drew accusations from prominent aid and human-rights figures that the work of the U.S.-funded Famine Early Warning System Network , meant to reflect the opinion of unbiased international experts, has been tainted by politics. A declaration of famine would be a great embarrassment for Israel, which has insisted that its 15-month war in Gaza is aimed against the Hamas militant group and not against its civilian population. U.S. ambassador to Israel Jacob Lew earlier this week called the warning by the internationally recognized group inaccurate and “irresponsible ." Lew and the U.S. Agency for International Development, which funds the monitoring group, both said the findings failed to properly account for rapidly changing circumstances in north Gaza. Humanitarian and human rights officials expressed fear of U.S. political interference in the world's monitoring system for famines. The U.S. Embassy in Israel and the State Department declined comment. FEWS officials did not respond to questions. “We work day and night with the U.N. and our Israeli partners to meet humanitarian needs — which are great — and relying on inaccurate data is irresponsible,” Lew said Tuesday. USAID confirmed to the AP that it had asked the famine-monitoring organization to withdraw its stepped-up warning issued in a report dated Monday. The report did not appear among the top updates on the group's website Thursday, but the link to it remained active . The dispute points in part to the difficulty of assessing the extent of starvation in largely isolated northern Gaza. Thousands in recent weeks have fled an intensified Israeli military crackdown that aid groups say has allowed delivery of only a dozen trucks of food and water since roughly October. FEWS Net said in its withdrawn report that unless Israel changes its policy, it expects the number of people dying of starvation and related ailments in north Gaza to reach between two and 15 per day sometime between January and March. The internationally recognized mortality threshold for famine is two or more deaths a day per 10,000 people. FEWS was created by the U.S. development agency in the 1980s and is still funded by it. But it is intended to provide independent, neutral and data-driven assessments of hunger crises, including in war zones. Its findings help guide decisions on aid by the U.S. and other governments and agencies around the world. A spokesman for Israel's foreign ministry, Oren Marmorstein, welcomed the U.S. ambassador's public challenge of the famine warning. “FEWS NET - Stop spreading these lies!” Marmorstein said on X . In challenging the findings publicly, the U.S. ambassador "leveraged his political power to undermine the work of this expert agency,” said Scott Paul, a senior manager at the Oxfam America humanitarian nonprofit. Paul stressed that he was not weighing in on the accuracy of the data or methodology of the report. “The whole point of creating FEWS is to have a group of experts make assessments about imminent famine that are untainted by political considerations,” said Kenneth Roth, former executive director of Human Rights Watch and now a visiting professor in international affairs at Princeton University . “It sure looks like USAID is allowing political considerations -- the Biden administration’s worry about funding Israel’s starvation strategy -- to interfere." Israel says it has been operating in recent months against Hamas militants still active in northern Gaza. It says the vast majority of the area’s residents have fled and relocated to Gaza City, where most aid destined for the north is delivered. But some critics, including a former defense minister, have accused Israel of carrying out ethnic cleansing in Gaza’s far north, near the Israeli border. North Gaza has been one of the areas hardest-hit by fighting and Israel’s restrictions on aid throughout its war with Hamas militants. Global famine monitors and U.N. and U.S. officials have warned repeatedly of the imminent risk of malnutrition and deaths from starvation hitting famine levels. International officials say Israel last summer increased the amount of aid it was admitting there, under U.S. pressure. The U.S. and U.N. have said Gaza’s people as a whole need between 350 and 500 trucks a day of food and other vital needs. But the U.N. and aid groups say Israel recently has again blocked almost all aid to that part of Gaza. Cindy McCain , the American head of the U.N. World Food Program, previously called for political pressure to get food flowing to Palestinians there. Israel says it places no restrictions on aid entering Gaza and that hundreds of truckloads of goods are piled up at Gaza’s crossings and accused international aid agencies of failing to deliver the supplies. The U.N. and other aid groups say ongoing combat, looting and insufficient security by Israeli troops make it impossible to deliver aid effectively. Lew, the U.S. ambassador, said the famine warning was based on “outdated and inaccurate” data. He pointed to uncertainty over how many of the 65,000-75,000 people remaining in northern Gaza had fled in recent weeks, saying that skewed the findings. FEWS said in its report that its famine assessment holds even if as few as 10,000 people remain. USAID in its statement to AP said it had reviewed the report before it became public, and noted “discrepancies” in population estimates and some other data. The U.S. agency had asked the famine warning group to address those uncertainties and be clear in its final report to reflect how those uncertainties affected its predictions of famine, it said. “This was relayed before Ambassador Lew’s statement,” USAID said in a statement. “FEWS NET did not resolve any of these concerns and published in spite of these technical comments and a request for substantive engagement before publication. As such, USAID asked to retract the report.” Roth criticized the U.S. challenge of the report in light of the gravity of the crisis there. “This quibbling over the number of people desperate for food seems a politicized diversion from the fact that the Israeli government is blocking virtually all food from getting in,” he said, adding that “the Biden administration seems to be closing its eyes to that reality, but putting its head in the sand won’t feed anyone.” The U.S., Israel’s main backer, provided a record amount of military support in the first year of the war. At the same time, the Biden administration repeatedly urged Israel to allow more access to aid deliveries in Gaza overall, and warned that failing to do so could trigger U.S. restrictions on military support. The administration recently said Israel was making improvements and declined to carry out its threat of restrictions. Military support for Israel’s war in Gaza is politically charged in the U.S., with Republicans and some Democrats staunchly opposed any effort to limit U.S. support over the suffering of Palestinian civilians trapped in the conflict. The Biden administration’s reluctance to do more to press Israel for improved treatment of civilians undercut support for Democrats in last month’s elections. Philadelphia Eagles coach Nick Sirianni apologized to Washington tight end Zach Ertz for his comments during a heated exchange following the Commanders' victory on Sunday, according to multiple reports. The player and coach were seen meeting for the routine postgame handshake, with Ertz instead offering a high-five to Sirianni, who was his head coach during the start of the 2021 season in Philadelphia. Instead, the two had to be separated by Eagles chief security officer Dom DiSandro, who then escorted Sirianni to a tunnel at Northwest Stadium, according to reports. Sirianni didn't like the intensity of Ertz's high-five and criticized his performance in the game, to which Ertz took exception, according to a report released Thursday morning on the "Uncovering the Birds" podcast with Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer. Ertz, who was listed as questionable for the game after sustaining a concussion a week earlier in Washington's 20-19 victory at New Orleans, started on Sunday and had one catch on two targets for 12 yards as the Commanders won 36-33. Asked afterward about the incident, Sirianni told reporters: "Both of us said ‘congrats' to each other." Ertz, likewise, downplayed the meeting, telling an Inquirer reporter: "We just exchanged holiday pleasantries and kept it moving." Sirianni, who according to reports later apologized to Ertz over a Zoom call, met with media members on Thursday. He said that he keeps conversations with players private and that he has respect for Ertz. During the week leading up to the NFC Division contest, Sirianni said of Ertz: "I think, first and foremost, Zach is an all-time Eagle and was really honored to be around him, and he's still playing at a high level in this part of his career. "So, going through that and him moving on, us moving on in the organization, him getting another fresh start, that was always a tough one because I did really come to really value Zach Ertz the person, Zach Ertz the player. Enjoyed the time I had around him." The Eagles traded Ertz to the Arizona Cardinals on Oct. 15, 2021, during Sirianni's first season as head coach and with the Philadelphia organization. Philadelphia selected Ertz in the second round (35th overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft out of Stanford. He has 764 career receptions for 7,972 yards and 50 touchdowns in 166 regular-season games (128 starts) for the Eagles (2013-21), Cardinals (2021-23) and Commanders. Washington signed Ertz, 34, as a free agent in March. The three-time Pro Bowl selection (2017-19) has started all 15 games for the Commanders and has 55 receptions for 538 yards and four touchdowns. --Field Level Media

Minister Nara Lokesh Unveils Skill Census To Boost Youth Employment(The Center Square) – State and national officials lauded former President Jimmy Carter for his public service after learning of his death Sunday afternoon at the age of 100. President Joe Biden said an official state funeral would be held for Carter in Washington. "He was a man of great character and courage, hope and optimism," Biden said. "We will always cherish seeing him and Rosalynn together. The love shared between Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter is the definition of partnership and their humble leadership is the definition of patriotism." President-elect Donald Trump urged everyone to keep the Carter family in their thoughts and prayers. "The challenges Jimmy faced as President came at a pivotal time for our country and he did everything in his power to improve the lives of all Americans," Trump said in a statement released from his campaign. "For that, we all owe him a debt of gratitude." Former president Bill Clinton gave Carter and his wife Rosalynn the Medal of Freedom in 1999. "From his commitment to civil rights as a state senator and governor of Georgia; to his efforts as President to protect our natural resources in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, make energy conservation a national priority, return the Panama Canal to Panama, and secure peace between Egypt and Israel at Camp David; to his post-presidential efforts at the Carter Center supporting honest elections, advancing peace combating disease, and promoting democracy; to his and Rosalynn's devotion and hard work at Habitat for Humanity--he worked tirelessly for a fairer, better world," Clinton and his wife Hillary said in a statement. Former president George W. Bush hailed Carter as a man of deeply held convictions. "President Carter dignified the office," Bush said on social media. "And his efforts to leave behind a better world didn't end with the presidency. His work with Habitat for Humanity and the Carter Center set an example of service that will inspire Americans for generations." Carter served as Georgia's governor from 1971-1975 before becoming president. Under his leadership, the European and Japanese state trade offices were launched, as well as the Georgia Film Commission," Gov. Brian Kemp said. "He and former First Lady Rosalynn Carter's support of the civil rights movement in the place of its birth is also remembered with deep appreciation." Lt. Gov. Burt Jones said Carter exemplified what it meant to be a public servant. "I had the honor of meeting him and his wife, and I will never forget that day," Jones said. "They were kind, wonderful, accepting and exactly what they portrayed every day, two people devoted to lifting up those in their community who needed help the most. President Carter's legacy will live on in the numerous nonprofits, charities and organizations Rosalynn, his family and him started."

Roper Technologies: A Great Corporate CultureORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — In losing Sunday’s battle with the Buffalo Bills, perhaps the best team in football, Jerod Mayo won the war. Best I can tell, he’s staying put. For 2025, and maybe beyond. To his angry fan base and incredulous pockets of the New England Patriots’ media corps, remember Mayo’s future doesn’t hinge on winning this season. It’s not about what you want, or what I think. It’s about the Krafts, who hand-picked Mayo to succeed Bill Belichick four and a half years before he actually did, believing in him, and finding reasons to maintain that belief. In the eyes of someone who wants to believe, Sunday supplied enough reason. The Patriots led at halftime, then lost by three as 14-point underdogs. They became the first team since mid-October to hold the Bills under 30 points. Drake Maye outplayed the next MVP of the league for most of the game and took another step toward his destiny as a franchise quarterback, If that sounds like a low bar, that’s because it is. Such is life in Year 1 of a rebuild, a multi-year process ownership has committed to seeing through to the end with their organizational pillars now in place: Mayo, Maye and de facto GM Eliot Wolf. As frustrating as this 3-12 campaign has been, there are always nuggets of optimism amid the rubble of a losing season; particularly if you want to find them. The Krafts do, and so does Maye, who loves his head coach, by the way; calling questions about Mayo’s job security “BS.” “We’ve got his back,” Maye said post-game. Maye’s voice matters. Certainly more than any number of fans or media members. Ever since media-fueled speculation that Mayo could get canned at the end of his first season began rising, the caveat has always been the same: if, a Gillette Stadium-sized “if,” the Patriots bomb atomically down the stretch, ownership could pull the plug on Mayo. NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport became the latest to join that chorus Sunday with this pregame report: “The Krafts want to keep Jerod Mayo,” he said. “They believe he is the leader for the organization for the future, and they knew it would be a multi-year process to get this thing right. Now if things go off the rails, if they really start to struggle and he loses the locker room the last couple games of the season, we’ve seen this thing turn. “But as of now, the Patriots believe Jerod Mayo is their leader for the future.” Well, Mayo hasn’t lost the locker room. That’s a fact. To a man, both in public and from those I’ve spoken to in private, Patriots players believe in their head coach. Mayo might be a players’ coach, yes, in the best and worst senses. But the Patriots were a few plays away Sunday from pulling off their largest upset since Super Bowl XXXVI. “I think we’re building something good,” Maye said. The Patriots also played their best half of football this season against their toughest opponent yet. Another fact. Now, to the frustrated, I am with you. To the shocked, I understand. But to the trigger-happy, lay down your arms. Mayo, by all accounts, is returning in 2025. Alex Van Pelt, however, is another story. In the same vein that the Krafts could have viewed Sunday’s performance as a reason to save Mayo — despite his pathetic punt at midfield, down 10 with just eight and a half minutes left — they could have convinced themselves their offensive coordinator is the real problem. After all, team president Jonathan Kraft was visibly exasperated over Van Pelt’s play-calling during the Pats’ loss at Arizona a week earlier. Four days later, Van Pelt told reporters he had yet to hear from his boss. Well, that time may be coming. Trailing by three in the fourth quarter Sunday, Van Pelt called a pass that resulted in an unnecessary lateral and game-winning touchdown for Buffalo. His offense later operated like it was taking a Sunday drive with the game on the line, using up 3:16 of the final 4:19 en route to its final touchdown. Van Pelt, finally, weaponized Maye’s legs in critical situations, something that arguably should have been done weeks ago. Not to mention, Van Pelt’s top running back can’t stop fumbling, and the offensive line remains a hot mess. Call him Alex Van Fall Guy. Because Van Pelt’s offense, for the first time in a while, under-performed relative to Mayo’s defense. On merit, he deserves to stay; a case that’s harder to make for defensive coordinator DeMarcus Covington. But it’s not about merit this season. It’s not about what you want. It’s not about what I think. It’s about the Krafts; what they see, what they want, what they believe. Even in defeat. ____United Rugby Championship Edinburgh (35) 50 Tries: Van der Merwe, Muncaster 2, Bradbury 2, Hill, Price Cons: Thompson 5, Healy Pens: Healy Benetton (0) 33 Tries: Odogwu, Creevy 2, Izekor, Fekitoa Cons: Umaga 4 Edinburgh survived a major second-half scare to claim a bonus-point win over Benetton and move up to seventh in the United Rugby Championship table. The capital side were utterly dominant in the first half, scoring tries through Duhan van der Merwe, Ben Muncaster, Paul Hill and a double from Magnus Bradbury to lead 35-0 at the break. Benetton mounted an extraordinary second-half comeback, with two tries from Augustin Creevy and one for Paolo Odogwu, and although Ali Price crossed for the hosts, Alessandro Isekor and Malaki Fekitoa scores ensured a nervy finish. Muncaster grabbed his second try late on and Ben Healy kicked a penalty to ensure Edinburgh held on for the win. Sean Everitt's side's focus switches to the European Challenge Cup with a trip to Gloucester on Friday. The game was barely a minute old when a slick backs move put Edinburgh full-back Wes Goosen through a gap and he fed Van der Merwe to race home for the try. The second was not long in coming. From a messy line-out on the 22, Muncaster gathered the loose ball, powered through several tackles and stretched for the line to score. Benetton failed to deal with Edinburgh's power and Bradbury battered through a few bodies to go over as the home side forged a 21-point lead in as many minutes. Bradbury crossed for his second moments later as Edinburgh wrapped up the bonus point before the 25-minute mark. Prop Hill then pounced on a loose ball to charge home for a try in the final play of the first half to round off a one-sided opening 40 in blustery conditions. With the wind behind them, Benetton finally showed some signs of life early in the second half - Odogwu and substitute Creevy crossing in quick succession to check the home side's momentum. What looked like a fleeting show of defiance threatened to become something more when Creevy ploughed over again to make it 35-19. Edinburgh restored some order when Darcy Graham skipped his way through and popped a pass off the deck for Price to score. Benetton kept coming though, propelled forward by the wind, and flanker Izekor forced himself over to bring his side back within two scores. Fekitoa then went over for the Italians' fifth try and the grim spectre of collapsing from 35-0 up was staring Edinburgh in the face. The capital side brought themselves back from the brink, Muncaster going over from close range for his second try and Healy splitting the posts off the tee to secure a victory that should have been a lot more straightforward than it was. Edinburgh: Goosen, Graham, Currie, Tuipulotu, Van der Merwe, Thompson, Price; Schoeman, Ashman, Hill, Sykes, Gilchrist, Ritchie, Muncaster, Bradbury. Replacements: Harrison, Venter, Rae, Skinner, Douglas, Vellacott, Healy, McCann. Benetton: Smith, Mendy, Fekitoa, Zanon, Odogwu, Umaga, Uren; Tetaz, Manfredi, Avaca, Scrafton, Snyman, Izekor, Halafihi, Favretto. Replacements: Creevy, Aminu, Pasquali, Kingi, Koroiyadi, Velez, Marin, Lynagh. Referee: Ben Breakspear

A tissue box cover that'll really make you feel at home (ha, get it?) while covering up the boring patterns that seem to be on all tissue boxes. Here's why BuzzFeed editor Elizabeth Lilly loves these: "I, an adult woman, cannot remember the last time I bought a box of tissues for my home. (Though I have several purse packs?!) It may have been when I most recently had a sinus infection, which I guess was two-plus years ago. But now that I’m playing house as a grown-ass person in an apartment to myself, I’m trying to be *responsible*. So, obviously, buying this whimsical tissue box cover we’ve featured in a million BuzzFeed shopping posts is peak adulting. Perhaps the reason I’ve been so bad at keeping around a box of tissues is because tissues just look...kind of ugly out in the open. But not with this lil’ cover! Now, it’s a ~design element~ that I’ll hopefully remember to keep full. For now, it’s filled with a square box of tissues I unearthed from my old apartment’s closet while packing; it's presently neatly housed inside the tissue box cover, providing the 'smoke' for the tiny chimney. The only downside to committing to this box is that I'll have to buy square-shaped tissue boxes only now. But I can live with that. And with my not-snotty nose." Price: $7 9. Your couch, bed, and accent chairs will never be the same without 'em! Psst, these are pillow covers . You can grab a set of pillow inserts for $16.99 . I want to get some more. Just luscious!... They are a different color on the other side, which adds more interesting contrast. I definitely recommend these. They can work in a casual or more formal setting. The colors are unique as well. I suggest getting inserts the same size if you want a soft pillow, and size up the insert if you want a firmer, puffier look." — A. It looks *just* like real tile but is a fraction of the price. And this on stairs? Genius! Promising review: "I am IN LOVE. I bought this to use as a backsplash in my rented studio apartment kitchen, which has potential to be pretty but really needs some help. I ordered two rolls thinking that if I liked it in my kitchen, I’d order more to use on the wall behind my bar cart. I loved it so much when it came in that I decided to go ahead and put it up on the big wall and deal with the kitchen later. The pattern is so easy to line up and it looks so good! My tiny, dark apartment instantly looked bigger and brighter. Even up close I can’t tell where the seams are. It was super easy to put up by myself, though I would recommend having another person to help if possible because it would have taken a lot less time if I’d had someone to hold it steady while I lined up the edges. If I could give six stars I would. It’s expensive but worth every penny!" — Lizzy Price: $24+ (available in three colors) 17. His death came after repeated bouts of illness in which images of the increasingly frail former president failed to erase memories of his fierce spirit. Democrat James Earl “Jimmy” Carter Jr swept to power in 1977 with his Trust Me campaign helping to beat Republican president Gerald Ford. Serving as 39th US president from 1977 to 1981, he sought to make government “competent and compassionate” but was ousted by the unstoppable Hollywood appeal of a certain Ronald Reagan. A skilled sportsman, Mr Carter left his home of Plains, Georgia, to join the US Navy, returning later to run his family’s peanut business. A stint in the Georgia senate lit the touchpaper on his political career and he rose to the top of the Democratic movement. But he will also be remembered for a bizarre encounter with a deeply disgruntled opponent. The president was enjoying a relaxing fishing trip near his home town in 1979 when his craft was attacked by a furious swamp rabbit which reportedly swam up to the boat hissing wildly. The press had a field day, with one paper bearing the headline President Attacked By Rabbit. Away from encounters with belligerent bunnies, Mr Carter’s willingness to address politically uncomfortable topics did not diminish with age. He recently said that he would be willing to travel to North Korea for peace talks on behalf of US President Donald Trump. He also famously mounted a ferocious and personal attack on Tony Blair over the Iraq war, weeks before the prime minister left office in June 2007. Mr Carter, who had already denounced George W Bush’s presidency as “the worst in history”, used an interview on BBC radio to condemn Mr Blair for his tight relations with Mr Bush, particularly concerning the Iraq War. Asked how he would characterise Mr Blair’s relationship with Mr Bush, Mr Carter replied: “Abominable. Loyal, blind, apparently subservient. “I think that the almost undeviating support by Great Britain for the ill-advised policies of President Bush in Iraq have been a major tragedy for the world.” Mr Carter was also voluble over the Rhodesia crisis, which was about to end during his presidency. His support for Robert Mugabe at the time generated widespread criticism. He was said to have ignored the warnings of many prominent Zimbabweans, black and white, about what sort of leader Mugabe would be. This was seen by Mr Carter’s critics as “deserving a prominent place among the outrages of the Carter years”. Mr Carter has since said he and his administration had spent more effort and worry on Rhodesia than on the Middle East. He admitted he had supported two revolutionaries in Mugabe and Joshua Nkomo, and with hindsight said later that Mugabe had been “a good leader gone bad”, having at first been “a very enlightened president”. One US commentator wrote: “History will not look kindly on those in the West who insisted on bringing the avowed Marxist Mugabe into the government. “In particular, the Jimmy Carter foreign policy... bears some responsibility for the fate of a small African country with scant connection to American national interests.” In recent years Mr Carter developed a reputation as an international peace negotiator. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his commitment to finding peaceful solutions to international conflicts, his work with human rights and democracy initiatives, and his promotion of economic and social programmes. Mr Carter was dispatched to North Korea in August 2008 to secure the release of US citizen Aijalon Mahli Gomes, who had been sentenced to eight years of hard labour after being found guilty of illegally entering North Korea. He successfully secured the release of Mr Gomes. In 2010 he returned to the White House to greet President Barack Obama and discuss international affairs amid rising tensions on the Korean peninsula. Proving politics runs in the family, in 2013 his grandson Jason, a state senator, announced his bid to become governor in Georgia, where his famous grandfather governed before becoming president. He eventually lost to incumbent Republican Nathan Deal. Fears that Mr Carter’s health was deteriorating were sparked in 2015 when he cut short an election observation visit in Guyana because he was “not feeling well”. It would have been Mr Carter’s 39th trip to personally observe an international election. Three months later, on August 12, he revealed he had cancer which had been diagnosed after he underwent surgery to remove a small mass in his liver. Mr Obama was among the well-wishers hoping for Mr Carter’s full recovery after it was confirmed the cancer had spread widely. Melanoma had been found in his brain and liver, and Mr Carter underwent immunotherapy and radiation therapy, before announcing in March the following year that he no longer needed any treatment. In 2017, Mr Carter was taken to hospital as a precaution, after he became dehydrated at a home-building project in Canada. He was admitted to hospital on multiple occasions in 2019 having had a series of falls, suffering a brain bleed and a broken pelvis, as well as a stint to be treated for a urinary tract infection. Mr Carter spent much of the coronavirus pandemic largely at his home in Georgia, and did not attend Joe Biden’s presidential inauguration in 2021, but extended his “best wishes”. Former first lady Rosalynn Carter, the closest adviser to Mr Carter during his term as US president, died in November 2023. She had been living with dementia and suffering many months of declining health. “Rosalynn was my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished,” Mr Carter said in a statement following her death. “She gave me wise guidance and encouragement when I needed it. As long as Rosalynn was in the world, I always knew somebody loved and supported me.”

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter has died at the age of 100, leaving behind a legacy of peace and humanitarian work. Carter, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, was notable for his role in brokering peace between Israel and Egypt during his presidency. While his time in office faced significant challenges, including a troubled economy and the Iran hostage crisis, Carter became known for his unyielding dedication to human rights and global unity. His son, Chip Carter, praised his father's commitment to these ideals, stating that they shared him with the world. Noted for his steady post-presidential efforts, world leaders and U.S. politicians have mourned his passing, emphasizing the significant loss of a leader devoted to the shared beliefs of peace and human rights. FBI director says he intends to resign at end of Joe Biden’s termA 7-year-old rivalry between tech leaders Elon Musk and Sam Altman over who should run OpenAI and prevent an artificial intelligence "dictatorship" is now heading to a federal judge as Musk seeks to halt the ChatGPT maker's ongoing shift into a for-profit company. Musk, an early OpenAI investor and board member, sued the artificial intelligence company earlier this year alleging it had betrayed its founding aims as a nonprofit research lab benefiting the public good rather than pursuing profits. Musk has since escalated the dispute, adding new claims and asking for a court order that would stop OpenAI’s plans to convert itself into a for-profit business more fully. The world's richest man, whose companies include Tesla, SpaceX and social media platform X, last year started his own rival AI company, xAI. Musk says it faces unfair competition from OpenAI and its close business partner Microsoft, which has supplied the huge computing resources needed to build AI systems such as ChatGPT. “OpenAI and Microsoft together exploiting Musk’s donations so they can build a for-profit monopoly, one now specifically targeting xAI, is just too much,” says Musk's filing that alleges the companies are violating the terms of Musk’s foundational contributions to the charity. OpenAI is filing a response Friday opposing Musk’s requested order, saying it would cripple OpenAI’s business and mission to the advantage of Musk and his own AI company. A hearing is set for January before U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers in Oakland. At the heart of the dispute is a 2017 internal power struggle at the fledgling startup that led to Altman becoming OpenAI's CEO. Musk also sought to be CEO and in an email outlined a plan where he would “unequivocally have initial control of the company” but said that would be temporary. He grew frustrated after two other OpenAI co-founders said he would hold too much power as a major shareholder and chief executive if the startup succeeded in its goal to achieve better-than-human AI known as artificial general intelligence , or AGI. Musk has long voiced concerns about how advanced forms of AI could threaten humanity. “The current structure provides you with a path where you end up with unilateral absolute control over the AGI," said a 2017 email to Musk from co-founders Ilya Sutskever and Greg Brockman. “You stated that you don't want to control the final AGI, but during this negotiation, you've shown to us that absolute control is extremely important to you.” In the same email, titled “Honest Thoughts,” Sutskever and Brockman also voiced concerns about Altman's desire to be CEO and whether he was motivated by “political goals.” Altman eventually succeeded in becoming CEO, and has remained so except for a period last year when he was fired and then reinstated days later after the board that ousted him was replaced. OpenAI published the messages Friday in a blog post meant to show its side of the story, particularly Musk's early support for the idea of making OpenAI a for-profit business so it could raise money for the hardware and computer power that AI needs. It was Musk, through his wealth manager Jared Birchall, who first registered “Open Artificial Technologies Technologies, Inc.”, a public benefit corporation, in September 2017. Then came the “Honest Thoughts” email that Musk described as the “final straw.” “Either go do something on your own or continue with OpenAI as a nonprofit,” Musk wrote back. OpenAI said Musk later proposed merging the startup into Tesla before resigning as the co-chair of OpenAI's board in early 2018. Musk didn't immediately respond to emailed requests for comment sent to his companies Friday. Asked about his frayed relationship with Musk at a New York Times conference last week, Altman said he felt “tremendously sad” but also characterized Musk’s legal fight as one about business competition. “He’s a competitor and we’re doing well,” Altman said. He also said at the conference that he is “not that worried” about the Tesla CEO’s influence with President-elect Donald Trump. OpenAI said Friday that Altman plans to make a $1 million personal donation to Trump’s inauguration fund, joining a number of tech companies and executives who are working to improve their relationships with the incoming administration. —————————— The Associated Press and OpenAI have a licensing and technology agreement allowing OpenAI access to part of the AP’s text archives.

HAIL: Prince Abdulaziz bin Saad bin Abdulaziz, the governor of Hail, inaugurated the Excellence Center for Salmon Production on Saturday, the largest facility of its kind in the Middle East. A collaboration between the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture and King Abdulaziz University, the center aims to produce 100,000 tons of salmon annually, bolstering Saudi Arabia’s food security and aquaculture sector, the Saudi Press Agency reported. The 10,000-square-meter facility features the latest marine technology, including recirculating aquaculture systems and aquaponics units, which integrate fish and vegetable production. It is designed to reduce the Kingdom’s reliance on salmon imports, currently at 23,000 tons per year. Prince Abdulaziz hailed the project as a cornerstone of Vision 2030, promoting sustainable development and economic diversification, while attending officials highlighted its potential to enhance innovation, create jobs, and serve as a model for sustainable aquaculture in the region, SPA added.

NoneFar-right conservative Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene shared her opinion on the ongoing debate about the H-1B, a visa class for specialized workers, on social media. "Go apply for a job and replace the H1-B visa holders and all the other skilled labor jobs that foreign workers are taking and American companies are desperately trying to hire," Greene posted. "It's called building a career, you work your way up." Why It Matters Greene said she came back from her "Christmas bliss" to see the "MAGA split" over H-1B "imported labor" and American workers. She spoke about her time owning a construction company and how she saw the "workforce issues." "However, I fully believe we must make the hard and necessary changes here in the U.S. to educate, build, and facilitate a solid foundation of knowledgeable, highly skilled, talented, well paid, AMERICAN workers," Greene said. She said the lack of American workers is "like having a crumbling foundation in our house." "Currently we are importing foreigners to hold up the foundation walls and plug the leaks," she said. "In order to go forward we must change our education system, create a culture that respects hard work and productivity, cut government waste/spending/regulations in order to produce a healthy robust economy that lowers inflation and pays higher wages to an American workforce, so that H1-B is no longer needed and can be done away with." Greene called for a change to refocus on "America FIRST." "This requires everyone's help to change it and we will all have to do what it takes to get it done," she wrote. "It won't be easy and it won't be as quick as we like, but we can do it TOGETHER and the results will MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN but EVEN BETTER THAN BEFORE!!!" What To Know Greene is a longtime MAGA supporter, even suggesting in 2022 that there should be a "MAGA month." She has frequently attended or participated in rallies against the federal government, Muslims and transgender people. Greene is one of President-elect Donald Trump 's most hardcore allies. Most recently she called for the release of "the congressional sexual slush fund list ," backed the consideration of Elon Musk as speaker of the House , and promoted conspiracies around drones in New Jersey. Discussions around the H-1B visa program have intensified over the recent days as some within Trump's close circle have been advocating for removing country-specific caps on green cards to address backlogs faced by applicants from countries including India. The debate started on Sunday after Trump named venture capitalist Sriram Krishnan as his artificial intelligence (AI) policy adviser. Laura Loomer , a Trump loyalist and far-right activist with a history of racially motivated comments, criticized the appointment as "deeply disturbing." She faced backlash and responded to a post that said the nation was built by "immigrants who drove innovation" by noting that the United States "was built by white Europeans" and "not third-world invaders from India." Musk, the world's richest man who benefited from the H-1B program, wrote in a response to a post on his social media platform X on Wednesday that there are not enough "super talented" and "super motivated" engineers in the U.S. Musk has continued to defend his argument, calling out Loomer for "trolling for attention." On Friday, War Room podcast host Steve Bannon , a fervent MAGA supporter, called out Musk for showing his "true colors." What People Are Saying Bannon in a post to Getrr: "H1B Visa Program Should be Zeroed-Out —Used to Constantly Drive Wages Down and Replace American Tech Workers —the Foreign Worker Replacements are Treated Like Indentured Servants." Democratic Representative Jasmine Crockett of Texas, on X: "I've done countless interviews explaining that we need immigrants and that they contribute to our economy! Businesses blow us up about needing workers. And what do ya know?! MAGA got played & is mad at who?! The same 2 guys that they were just yelling was looking out for them last week as the government was on the verge of a shutdown!" Economics commentator Jason Harrison, on X: "People on tech twitter are actually shocked that some of their mutuals aren't 'only for legal immigration' and just straight up racist LMAO." What Happens Next It is still unclear what will happen—if anything—around the H-1B visa program when Trump takes office.

Clay's 15 help Morehead State take down Alice Lloyd 94-63Dec 13 (Reuters) - OpenAI said it would ask a judge in California on Friday to reject a request by billionaire Elon Musk to halt the ChatGPT maker’s conversion to a for-profit company. OpenAI also published a trove of emails and text messages , opens new tab with Musk on its website to argue that he initially backed for-profit status for OpenAI before walking away from the company after failing to get a majority equity stake and full control. Musk, who was an OpenAI cofounder, has since launched a competing artificial intelligence company, xAI. Musk sued OpenAI , its CEO Sam Altman and others in August, claiming they violated contract provisions by putting profits ahead of the public good in the push to advance AI. In November he asked U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers in Oakland for a preliminary injunction blocking OpenAI from converting to a for-profit structure. A lawyer for Musk did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Friday. OpenAI’s blog post said Musk “should be competing in the marketplace rather than the courtroom.” Musk has since added Microsoft (MSFT.O) , opens new tab and others as defendants to his lawsuit, alleging OpenAI was scheming to sideline rivals and monopolize the market for generative artificial intelligence. OpenAI started as a nonprofit in 2014 and has become the face of generative AI through billions of dollars in funding from Microsoft. In October it closed a $6.6 billion funding round from investors, which could value the company at $157 billion. Musk’s xAI earlier this month said it had raised about $6 billion in equity financing. OpenAI is working on a plan to restructure its core business into a for-profit benefit corporation. The OpenAI nonprofit would own a minority stake in the for-profit company. Corporate Transparency Act: US appeals court halts enforcement of anti-money laundering law

By Karen Garcia, Los Angeles Times A recent study that recommended toxic chemicals in black plastic products be immediately thrown away included a math error that significantly overstated the risks of contamination, but its authors are standing by their conclusions and warn against using such products. Published in the peer-reviewed journal Chemosphere , experts from the nonprofit Toxic-Free Future said they detected flame retardants and other toxic chemicals in 85% of 203 items made of black plastic including kitchen utensils , take-out containers, children’s toys and hair accessories. The study initially said the potential exposure to chemicals found in one of the kitchen utensils approached the minimum levels the Environmental Protection Agency deemed a health risk. But in an update to the study, the authors say they made an error in their calculations and the real levels were “an order of magnitude lower” than the EPA’s thresholds. The error was discovered by Joe Schwarcz, director of McGill University’s Office for Science and Society in Canada. In a blog post, Schwarcz explained that the Toxin-Free Future scientists miscalculated the lower end of what the EPA considered a health risk through a multiplication error. Instead of humans being potentially exposed to a dose of toxic chemicals in black plastic utensils near the minimum level that the EPA deems a health risk, it’s actually about one-tenth of that. Though Schwarcz said the risks outlined in the study aren’t enough for him to discard his black plastic kitchen items if he had them, he agreed with the authors that flame retardants shouldn’t be in these products in the first place. “The math error does not impact the study’s findings, conclusions or recommendations,” said Megan Liu, a co-author of the study who is the science and policy manager for Toxic-Free Future . She added that any traces of flame retardants or toxic chemicals in cooking utensils should be concerning for the public. Flame retardants are getting into commonly used items because black-colored products are being made from recycled electronic waste, such as discarded television sets and computers, that frequently contain the additives. When they’re heated, the flame retardants and other toxic chemicals can migrate out. If you’re wondering whether your old black plastic spoon or other utensils are a part of this group, Liu shared some more guidance. Generally, how do I know a product is harmful? It’s nearly impossible to know whether a black plastic product is contaminated. That’s because these products that include recycled e-waste don’t disclose a detailed list of all ingredients and contaminants in the product. Liu said it’s also unclear how many types of flame retardants are in these black plastic products. Some of the products that researchers tested in this recent study “had up to nine different harmful chemicals and harmful flame retardants in them,” she said. How can I find out if black plastic food trays are made with recycled contaminated plastic? Anytime you’re looking for the type of recycled plastic a product is made of you’re going to look for a number within the chasing arrows (that form a triangle) logo. Recycling symbols are numbered 1 to 7 and we commonly associate the numbers with what we can toss in our blue recycling bins. The 1 through 7 numbers stand for, respectively, polyethylene terephthalate, high-density polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), low-density polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene or Styrofoam, and miscellaneous plastics (including polycarbonate, polylactide, acrylic, acrylonitrile butadiene, styrene, fiberglass and nylon). The study found higher levels of toxic flame retardants in polystyrene plastic, which is labeled with the number 6, said Liu. When did recycled e-waste begin contaminating black plastic products? There isn’t a definitively timeline of when recycled electronic-waste started to be incorporated into black plastic products specifically, but e-waste started to get recycled in the early 2000s, Liu said. The way computers, cellphones, stereos, printers and copiers were being disposed of previously was to simply add them to a landfill without reusing salvageable parts. But as the National Conference of State Legislatures notes, electronics production required a significant amount of resources that could be recovered through recycling. Recovering resources such as metals, plastics and glass through recycling used a fraction of the energy needed to mine new materials. However, the study pointed out that flame retardants and other chemical contaminates have been detected in and near e-waste recycling facilities, in indoor air and dust at formal e-waste recycling facilities in Canada, China, Spain and the U.S. It also noted contamination in soil samples surrounding e-waste recycling sites in China and Vietnam. What are safer alternatives? The safest nontoxic material options for kitchen utensil are wood and stainless steel. ©2024 Los Angeles Times. Visit at latimes.com. Distributed by Tribune Content Agency, LLC.TORONTO — Canada's main stock index fell more than 100 points Friday, led by losses in base metal and telecom stocks, while U.S. stock markets were mixed ahead of next week's interest rate decision from the U.S. Federal Reserve. This week, the Bank of Canada announced another outsized interest rate cut of half a percentage point while also signalling it plans to slow the pace of cuts going forward. Allan Small, senior investment adviser at iA Private Wealth, said the central bank is juggling a lot of balls heading into the new year, including a faltering economy, a housing market that’s poised to heat up, and a U.S. Fed likely to cut much slower next year. “If (the Bank of Canada) continues to cut when the U.S. doesn’t, where does that leave our dollar?” asked Small. “They’re flying by the seat of their pants.” The S&P/TSX composite index closed down 136.41 points at 25,274.30. In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 86.06 points at 43,828.06. The S&P 500 index was down 0.16 points at 6,051.09, while the Nasdaq composite was up 23.88 points at 19,926.72. The Fed has done a better job of tamping down inflation while not harming the economy too much, said Small. The Fed is expected to cut by a quarter-percentage point next week, and its path is clearer than the Bank of Canada’s, said Small. “I don’t think they have much room to cut more,” he said, noting this week saw U.S. inflation data tick up from the month before. “Most people think they’ll go 25 (basis points) and pause for a little while,” said Small. “Would I be surprised to see them not cut at all? No, but I think the market would take that negatively.” Heading into the last few weeks of the year, Small said if there’s a so-called Santa Claus rally, it may be more muted than usual. “It's quite possible we've taken some gains that we normally would have had in December, brought them forward into November, and now December might not be as strong as we normally see,” he said. On Wall St., the Nasdaq did a little better than its U.S. peers as semiconductor company Broadcom saw its stock gain more than 24 per cent after reporting earnings. “I think the commentary on the conference call really caused the stock to shoot up," said Small. The company gave a bright forecast for investors on the back of expected growth in artificial intelligence. This week, Broadcom and Apple also announced a deal to develop a chip for AI. The Canadian dollar traded for 70.27 cents US compared with 70.48 cents US on Thursday. The January crude oil contract was up US$1.27 at US$71.29 per barrel and the January natural gas contract was down 18 cents at US$3.28 per mmBTU. The February gold contract was down US$33.60 at US$2,675.80 an ounce and the March copper contract was down five cents at US$4.15 a pound. — With files from The Associated Press This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 13, 2024. CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) — Miami probably was one win away from getting into the College Football Playoff. Iowa State definitely was one win away. Their consolation prize of sorts: playing one another. The Hurricanes and Cyclones — a meteorological matchup — have accepted bids to the Pop-Tarts Bowl, to be played Dec. 28 in Orlando, Florida. Iowa State (10-3) is looking for its first 11-win season in the program's 133-year history, and Miami (10-2) is seeking its first 11-win season since 2003. Miami's loss at Syracuse to close the regular season wound up being the game the Hurricanes could point to as the reason they missed out on the CFP. Iowa State could have played its way in and lost the Big 12 title game to CFP-bound Arizona State on Saturday. “I think everyone that doesn't get in feels disappointment,” Miami coach Mario Cristobal said. “We feel the onus of just doing better. Just do better, go forward, have an opportunity to get better.” It's essentially the same task for both teams: regrouping after seeing the playoff slip away. “I think that’s what’s made Iowa State football really special is our ability to have great resiliency," Cyclones coach Matt Campbell said. "And I know our kids are super-excited about the opportunity to finish off. Obviously (Saturday) was disappointing. But this group and this football team has the opportunity to just continue to fight.” A big question for Miami: whether quarterback Cam Ward will play. The likely Heisman Trophy finalist has thrown for 155 touchdown passes in his career at Incarnate Word, Washington State and Miami. That’s tied for the most by anyone in Division I (FBS and FCS) history; Case Keenum threw 155 in his career at Houston. Many draft-bound players not in the playoff will be opting out of bowl games over the coming weeks. There's been no indication from Miami yet that Ward or any other draft-bound player has made a decision. “I think it’s important that our guys, anyone playing and closing out the season, understands the importance of that next step for a program like ours," Cristobal said. "And I think our guys do.” Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up here . The beloved actor known for roles in "The Golden Girls," "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," "Boston Legal" and others will be on a 2025 Forever stamp, USPS announced this past week. White died in late December 2021 , less than three weeks before her 100th birthday. The Postal Service hasn't announced a release date for the stamp. Betty White speaks Sept. 17, 2018, at the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. “An icon of American television, Betty White (1922–2021) shared her wit and warmth with viewers for seven decades,” the Postal Service said in announcing the stamp, which depicts a smiling White based on a 2010 photograph by celebrity photographer Kwaku Alston . “The comedic actor, who gained younger generations of fans as she entered her 90s, was also revered as a compassionate advocate for animals.” Boston-based artist Dale Stephanos created the digital illustration from Alston's photo. "I'd love to send a letter back to my 18-year-old self with this stamp on it and tell him that everything is going to be OK," Stephanos posted on Facebook . Regardless of personal politics, self-proclaimed supporters of Republican President-elect Donald Trump and Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris reacted with delight on social media. "Betty White was my hero, all of my life! I actually had a doll when I was a little girl I named Betty White," one Trump supporter posted on X , formerly Twitter. “Something to make this awful week a little better: We’re getting a Betty White stamp,” a pro-Harris X account posted. White combined a wholesome image with a flare for bawdy jokes . Her television career began in the early 1950s and exploded as she aged. “The only SNL host I ever saw get a standing ovation at the after party," Seth Meyers posted on Twitter after her death. "A party at which she ordered a vodka and a hotdog and stayed til the bitter end.” Allen Ludden and his wife Betty White, who love to play games, continue a two year gin rummy battle in which she's ahead by a cumulative 6,000 points in Westchester, N.Y. on April 29, 1965. The NBA's Last Two Minute Report confirmed that officials made the correct call when was assessed a personal foul on on a loose ball scramble, resulting in Green hitting the winning free throws during the ' 91-90 win over the on Wednesday night. A livid Steve Kerr said after the game that the officiating crew, led by crew chief Bill Kennedy, had made an "unconscionable" call that the Warriors head coach had never seen in his NBA career. Kerr argued that the officials had allowed physical play up until that foul call with 3.5 seconds left. Green's free throws sent the Rockets to Las Vegas to play in the NBA Cup semifinals against on Saturday. "I'm pissed off," Kerr said, echoing how his team also felt on late Wednesday night. "I wanted to go to Las Vegas. We wanted to win this Cup and we aren't going because of a loose ball foul, 80 feet from the basket with the game on the line. I've never seen anything like it in my life, and that was ridiculous." On the possession that Kuminga fouled Green, missed a 3-point attempt. A chaotic scramble for the loose ball ensued. was able to gain possession of the ball on the floor as dove for the ball, too. Payton then tried to pass the ball to Kuminga, resulting in Green diving on the ball. The NBA said Kuminga "reaches over Green in an attempt to get to the ball and pulls his shoulder down." As for Payton and VanVleet, the NBA determined it was a correct non-call as both made "incidental contact with each other in pursuit of the loose ball." "I've never seen a loose ball foul on a jump ball situation, 80 feet from the basket with the game on the line," Kerr said. "I've never seen that. I think I saw it in college one time 30 years ago. Never seen it in the NBA. That is ... unconscionable. I don't even understand what just happened. Loose ball, diving on the floor, 80 feet from the basket, and you're going to give a guy two free throws to decide the game when people are scrambling for the ball. Just give them a timeout and let the players decide the game. That's how you officiate. Especially because the game was a complete wrestling match. They didn't call anything. "So you've established you're just not going to call anything throughout the game. It's a physical game. And call a loose ball foul on a jump ball situation with guys diving on the floor? With the game on the line? This is a billion-dollar industry. You got people's jobs on the line." This is the second loss in eight days in which the NBA confirmed a late call was correct that Kerr believed cost the Warriors a game. At the end of a 119-115 loss at on Dec. 3, Kerr argued that Denver's signaled for a timeout after securing a loose ball while Denver had no timeouts left. The officials said they did not see Braun clearly signal for a timeout, which would have resulted in a technical foul and possession for the Warriors with 1.9 seconds left down four. The officials called for a jump ball instead. "I am stunned," Kerr said after the Houston loss. "I give the Rockets credit. They battled back. They played great defense all night. But I feel for our guys. Our guys battled back, played their asses off and deserved to win that game or at least have a chance for one stop at the end to finish the game. "And that was taken from us by a call that I don't think an elementary school referee would've made because that guy would've had feel and said, you know what? I'm not going to decide a game on a loose ball, 80 feet from the basket."Mumbai, Nov 23(IANS): Music maestro A.R. Russian dictator Vladimir Putin does not miss an opportunity to show off his hypersonic medium-range ballistic missile "Oreshnik." He emphasized that no one has a chance to shoot down this weapon. Putin said this during a "Direct Line" with Russians on Thursday, December 19. Instead, the Russian president "honestly" does not know why the missile has this name. "Oreshnik is a medium-range weapon, and medium-range weapons are 1000, 1500, 3000, and up to 5,500 kilometers in range. Now let's imagine that our system is located at a distance of 2,000 kilometers, and even an anti-missile located in Poland will not reach it . At the first site, the vulnerability is high. First of all, nothing will reach there, even if these positioning areas are not protected (but they are usually protected), nothing reaches, there are no such systems. And secondly, it takes time to fly that far, and we start deploying combat units in a few seconds. So there is no chance to shoot down these missiles," the war criminal boasted. Putin also spoke about Western experts who are discussing the "Oreshnik," saying that they should propose that Russia and the West conduct a "technological experiment ." To do this, the dictator said, they could identify a target in Kyiv, where the West could deploy all its air defense forces, and Russia could strike. He cynically emphasized that it would be a "high-tech duel ." As a reminder, Kremlin dictator Vladimir Putin has called Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine a "movement ." He claims that "movement" begins when it gets "boring ." At the same time, the Kremlin leader avoided an uncomfortable question about the Kursk region, where the Ukrainian Armed Forces continue their operation. As OBOZ.UA reported , Putin made another statement about the "Oreshnik" medium-range missile system and embarrassed himself. In particular, he threatened the world with the "imminent start" of mass production of this complex. Only verified information on our Telegram channel OBOZ.UA and Viber . Do not fall for fakes!

It's a fitting year for of Sutherland, who, on her 80th birthday, won the NSW Senior Volunteer of the Year award. or signup to continue reading There aren't many community causes Mrs Jones hasn't supported. Her volunteering journey began with an early childhood program organised by Sutherland Hospital. For more than a decade, she has volunteered with the 3Bridges Community volunteer home visiting service to support young mothers who may be struggling with their newborns. She helps women navigate challenges and regain life momentum by offering practical and emotional support to vulnerable or working mothers, helping them connect with their communities to ensure positive maternal and infant health outcomes. "Some of them are on their own. Their parents might be overseas, their husbands might be working long hours, some have postnatal depression. They feel they can't cope," Mrs Jones said. "The best part is that with a simple 'come on, we'll go for a walk or a coffee', I've encouraged them to join playgroups or storytime at the library before you know it. Next thing, they're bonding with other mums." Mrs Jones also volunteers with other organisations, including Bush Care Bass & Flinders, Knitting-Wrapped with Love, Sutherland Food Services, Relay for Life, and the Cancer Council. A poignant memory was donating blankets to flood-affected communities in Lismore. "We had about 80 blankets to donate," she said. "We couldn't get them up by truck. No one had the funds to truck them up. I have a small Honda Jazz, and I put the seats down, put them in my car, and drove to some of the most badly affected, remote areas. "A wonderful part of that was I met a social worker there. On the day I got there, she was organising a funeral for a young man who lost his life. His family was there. I thought, 'I shouldn't have come while they were there'. I saw them walking. I gave the mother and the grandmother two of the beautiful blankets. They broke down and we all cried." The Centre of Volunteering, which hosts the annual awards, presented Mrs Jones with the NSW achievement this month. "I'm gobsmacked," she said. "Especially because of the quality of people in the same category I was in. I was thinking, 'gee they've done a good job'. I was overwhelmed when I heard my name called out, and it appeared on a big screen." Also a competitive swimmer, Mrs Jones says volunteering keeps her active and busy. "I'm on my own - my family has spread away, and I have the time," she said. "Sometimes, when you volunteer, it builds your heart. I get more out of it. I just like meeting people." SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy will miss Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers with a sore throwing shoulder. Purdy injured his right shoulder in last Sunday’s . Purdy underwent an MRI that showed no structural damage but the shoulder didn’t improve during the week and Purdy was ruled out for the game. Coach Kyle Shanahan said star defensive end Nick Bosa also will miss the game with injuries to his left hip and oblique. Left tackle Trent Williams is questionable with an ankle injury and will be a game-time decision. This will be the first time Purdy has missed a start because of an injury since taking over as the 49ers’ quarterback in December 2022. Brandon Allen will start in his place. The Niners (5-5) are currently in a three-way tie for second in the NFC West, a game behind first-place Arizona, and have little margin for error if they want to get back to the playoffs after making it to the Super Bowl last season. Purdy has completed 66% of his passes this season for 2,613 yards, 13 TDs, eight interceptions and a 95.9 passer rating that is down significantly from his league-leading mark of 113 in 2023. Allen has been mostly a backup since being drafted by Jacksonville in 2016. Allen last started a game in Week 18 of the 2021 season for Cincinnati and has thrown just three passes the last three seasons — including none since joining San Francisco in 2023. Joshua Dobbs will be the backup on Sunday. ___ AP NFL:AY Proves Comedians Don’t Have To Be Funny To Be Successful – Bae U

One such initiative is the transformation of traditional water fees into water taxes in select provinces across the country. These pilot programs, which have been implemented for over seven years now, aim to align water pricing with the principles of efficient resource allocation and environmental protection. However, despite the long duration of these trials and the clear goals of promoting water conservation, the impact on residents seems to be minimal, with water prices showing little change in the past few years.

On July 25, 2024, Reuters reported on a piece titled "Coinbase UK Unit Fined for Violating Financial Crime Regulations." The article noted that Coinbase's UK subsidiary, CB Payments Limited (CBPL), faced fines for failing to comply with a regulatory agreement aimed at strengthening its defenses against financial crime. Allegedly, CBPL provided services to 13,416 high-risk customers, contrary to a commitment made after an evaluation by the UK's Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). Funds deposited by these high-risk clients were reportedly used to facilitate multiple crypto transactions through other Coinbase entities, amounting to approximately $226 million. (Bloomberg) — Asian stocks were poised to climb Thursday after US equities snapped a two-day slide on benign inflation data that supported expectations for an interest rate cut this month. Australian shares rose, while futures for Japan climbed and Hong Kong contracts were steady. The S&P 500 rose 0.8% and the Nasdaq 100 advanced 1.9% to a new high Wednesday, with the strong showing for tech pushing Amazon.com Inc and Meta Platforms Inc. to fresh records. Broadcom Inc. rose 6.6% following a report that the chipmaker was working on an AI deal with Apple Inc. Australian and New Zealand yields edged higher, echoing selling pressure in Treasuries across the curve Wednesday. The US 10-year yield rose four basis points, while the policy-sensitive two-year climbed one basis point. The moves were centered upon US consumer price index data that came in line with expectations, cementing forecasts for the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates by 25 basis points later in December. Swaps traders have now virtually priced in such a move, compared with an around 75% chance a week ago. The inflation data, “gives the Federal Reserve the green light for a 25 basis point rate cut at the December meeting, as it helps to confirm that we are still making progress on inflation even though it remains sticky,” according to Skyler Weinand, chief investment officer at Regan Capital. In Asia, economic reports set for release Thursday include labor market data for Australia, and inflation and industrial production for India. An index of dollar strength rose Wednesday for a fourth session, helped along by higher Treasury yields. China’s yuan slid the most in a week following a report that Beijing is considering allowing the currency to weaken next year in response to the threat of a trade war with the US. Meanwhile, China’s two-day Central Economic Work Conference is expected to map out policies for next year, following stimulus signals from top leaders. Officials must focus on, “how will they deliver fiscal stimulus more directly to consumers so the economy can more directly shift to consumption-led rather than investment led,” Amy Xie Patrick, head of income strategies for Pendal Group, said on Bloomberg Television. The yen weakened for a third day Wednesday. Bank of Japan officials see little cost to waiting before raising interest rates, while still being open to a hike next week depending on data and market developments, according to people familiar with the matter. Hikes, Cuts Brazil’s central bank increased the benchmark interest rate by a full percentage point to 12.25% late on Wednesday, and promised to deliver two hikes of the same size in the next two meetings, as it rushes to recover investor confidence and tame inflation expectations. The Canadian dollar advanced after hovering near a four and a half-year low once policymakers signaled they were ready to slow down on monetary easing. The Bank of Canada lowered its rate by half a percentage Wednesday, its second straight outsized cut. The Swiss National Bank and European Central Bank are also expected to reduce interest rates Thursday. In commodities, crude futures rose after a Bloomberg News report that the Biden administration is considering new sanctions on Russia’s oil trade, a move that could tighten the market. The White House warned that Russia may fire another intermediate-range ballistic missile at Ukraine, after what Moscow said were strikes on its territory with US-supplied weapons. Wall Street’s fear gauge, the Vix, fell below 14 following the CPI data, an indication the market is expecting calm in the near-term. Stocks and long bonds stand to benefit as fears of a higher inflation print evaporate, according to ClearBridge Investments’ Jeff Schulze. “The debate for the FOMC next week between cut or skip is over,” Schulze said. “This inflation print should be risk-asset friendly and provide a tailwind to equity markets as we move through one of the strongest seasonal periods of the year.” Key events this week: Some of the main moves in markets: Stocks Currencies Cryptocurrencies Bonds Commodities This story was produced with the assistance of Bloomberg Automation.

A full privatisation of NatWest has edged closer after the government further trimmed its stake in the FTSE 100 bank. Taxpayers own just under 11 per cent of the high street lender after the state sold further NatWest stock as part of a trading plan that steadily dribbles small amounts of shares into the market. It comes less than a fortnight after the government offloaded a much bigger stake in the lender back to NatWest for £1 billion , a deal that has accelerated the state’s exit from the bank. At the current pace of share sales, taxpayers will be out of NatWest at some point during the first half of next year. It will be a landmark moment. The bank has been backed by the government since the state rescued it from the brink of collapse between 2008 and 2009 during the global financial crisis. That bailout handed taxpayers a stake of almost 85 per cent in the lender, which was then called Royal Bank of Scotland Group. The government has been selling down its holding since 2015, although the pace of disposals has increased markedly since the start of this year, when the state still owned about 38 per cent.In the competitive world of basketball, players like Zhou Qi must constantly strive to improve themselves, both physically and mentally. Australia will be able to withdraw $600m in funding for a PNG rugby league team at anytime and without cause under a 10-year deal struck to financially back the expansion side that will enter the NRL in 2028. The Australian government will not release terms of the deal between the two countries, which sits alongside the bilateral security agreement that comes into force on Thursday, but officials have described the arrangement as based on shared strategic trust. The deal, which starts in the current year and expires in 2034-35, includes the construction of a compound to accommodate players and tax breaks to assist in recruitment. Prime minister and rugby league fan Anthony Albanese said the deal – which has been years in the making – was about more than sport, and would bring benefits to the PNG economy and those living in the region. “Rugby league is PNG’s national sport, and PNG deserves a national team,” he said. ARLC chair Peter V’landys said the deal was a “historic step” for the sport, Australia, PNG and more broadly the entire Pacific region. “Rugby league isn’t just sport, it’s a social force for good – a way to improve lives and build stronger communities,” V’landys said. “The new PNG team provides the NRL with a new 10 million-plus audience many who will go from being casual fans into engaged fans. Just as importantly the pathways investments will provide many new and exciting players to the game. The spending is split roughly in half between the NRL club and other rugby league-related development activities in the Pacific. $290m will go towards the NRL franchise and $250m is for rugby league programs in the region. $60m will be paid directly to the NRL as a licence fee, which is expected to be shared between existing clubs. $120m of the money committed will come from existing government programmes, leaving an average annual cost to the budget of $48m. The arrangement also involves more than $100m investment from Papua New Guinea which will build new facilities and accommodation for players and staff as well as fund the tax breaks. Australia has provided more than $1.4bn to the PNG Treasury in the past three years according to the Lowy Institute. The PNG government hopes Australian tourists will also travel to Port Moresby to watch matches involved the new team. About 10,000 Australians currently live in PNG, and approximately the same number of PNG nationals currently reside in Australia. The PNG Hunters have played in the senior Queensland Cup competition – one tier below the NRL – since 2014 and were premiers in 2017. At $60m a year, the investment is dwarfed by Australia’s overall spending in the Pacific, which the government claims reached $2bn for the first time in 2024-25. The deal has been secured by the signing of detailed term sheets involving the two governments and the NRL, but Australian officials expect the long-form agreements to be signed within weeks.
