Another week has passed and it’s time for our Three Stars of the Week honors for the Ontario Reign , who went 2-0-0 in two games. Before we name the three stars, let’s quickly recap the last week’s two games for the Reign. 4-2 win over Henderson The Ontario Reign faced the Henderson Silver Knights for the fourth time in less than a month. Andre Lee returned to the Reign on loan and started on the third line, making his AHL season debut. The first period was sleepy as both teams clogged up the neutral zone forcing the other to dump and chase, sprinkled in with some icing calls. The Reign woke up in the second period and scored three goals ( Samuel Fagemo , Kaleb Lawrence , and Charles Hudon ) to take a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes. Gawdin would add an empty-net goal for his third point of the night to ice the game. Henderson would add a late goal, but it wouldn’t matter as the Reign won the game with one of their better 60-minute performances. 4-1 win over San Diego The Reign ended their two-game road trip for the week with a Saturday night matchup against the San Diego Gulls. Erik Portillo started this game after being loaned back to the Reign the morning of. Unlike Wednesday’s game against Henderson, this one started with chances for both sides. The Reign didn’t have a solid period defensively but managed to take a 2-0 lead into intermission on goals from Fagemo and Jack Studnicka. Roman Kinal got the lone tally in the second period immediately after a Reign power play. Jeff Malott would score on a rebound goal moments after the power play expired to give Ontario their two-goal lead back. Hudon would add an empty-net goal to seal the deal, giving the Reign a 4-1 victory over their rivals down south. Gawdin would record another three-point night in this one. Here are your Reign’s three stars of the week Third star Francesco Pinelli Stat line: Two games played, zero goals, zero assists, zero points, -1 rating, two shots on goal You’re probably wondering why Francesco Pinelli is this week’s third star without recording a point. That’s because something caught my eye during the game against Henderson. Pinelli did something we haven’t seen him do since turning pro: fight! Yes, you read that correctly. Pinelli got into his first professional fight late in the second period against Kai Uchacz . Pinelli is off to a slow start with six points in 15 games, but the difference between this year and last year is he’s playing with confidence and not tight with the puck like he did last year. However, that will need to translate into points soon. Second star Erik Portillo Stat line: One game played, one goal against, 33 saves on 34 shots, 1-0-0 record, .971 save percentage Erik Portillo made only one start during the week after being up with the LA Kings and was loaned back to the Reign the day of the game against the Gulls. Portillo stopped 33 of 34 shots, earning his fourth win of the season and improving his save percentage to .906. Portillo had to make some big saves early as the Reign had trouble handling the puck and making crisp tape-to-tape passes. Although there were big rebounds Portillo gave up, he recovered well in tracking the puck after to make a follow-up save. Rebound control will be a work in progress. It was the second straight game he allowed one goal. The Reign and Gulls are on the ice for warmups at Pechanga! Erik Portillo led Ontario out, while Oscar Dansk gets the start in net for SD. pic.twitter.com/RDmRq8kMcd — Jared Shafran (@ShafReign) November 24, 2024 First star Glenn Gawdin Stat line: Two games played, one goal, five assists, six points, +3 rating, four shots on goal Who else but the Gawd Father himself? For the second straight week, Glenn Gawdin is the first star, tallying back-to-back three-point games for six points. Gawdin recorded one goal, an empty-net goal, and three primary assists. 19 of Gawdin’s 20 points have come during November (ten games) after recording one point in October (five games) and is third in the league in scoring now. Nobody may knock Gawdin off from the first star if this kind of play from him continues. Jones alleges fraud and collusion marred the bankruptcy auction that resulted in The Onion being named the winning bidder over a company affiliated with him. A trustee overseeing the auction denies the allegations and accuses Jones of launching a smear campaign because he didn't like the outcome. U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Christopher Lopez had been scheduled to hear an emergency motion to disqualify The Onion's bid on Monday, but put it off until either Dec. 9 or Dec. 17. That's also when the judge will hear arguments on the trustee's request to approve the sale of Infowars to The Onion. Lopez said it made sense to have one hearing on both requests. “I want a fair and transparent process and let’s just see where the process goes," Lopez said. Lopez could ultimately allow The Onion to move forward with its purchase, order a new auction or name the other bidder as the winner. At stake is whether Jones gets to stay at Infowars’ studio in Austin, Texas, under a new owner friendly to him, or whether he gets kicked out by The Onion. The other bidder, First United American Companies, runs a website in Jones’ name that sells nutritional supplements. Jones continues to broadcast his show from the Infowars studio, but he has set up a new location, websites and social media accounts as a precaution. The trustee shut down the Austin studio and Infowars' websites for about 24 hours last week after The Onion was announced as the winning bidder, but allowed them to resume the next day, drawing more complaints from Jones. Jones declared bankruptcy and liquidated his assets after he was ordered to pay nearly $1.5 billion to relatives of victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. He was ordered to pay damages for defamation and emotional distress in lawsuits in Connecticut and Texas after he repeatedly said the 2012 shooting that killed 20 first graders and six educators was a hoax staged by actors to increase gun control. Proceeds from the liquidation are to go to Jones’ creditors, including the Sandy Hook families who sued him. Last year, Lopez ruled that $1.1 billion of the Sandy Hook judgments could not be discharged in the bankruptcy. On Monday, he denied a request from Sandy Hook families to make the full $1.5 billion not dischargeable, meaning the debt cannot be wiped clean. Also Monday, lawyers for the social media platform X objected to any sale of the accounts of both Jones and Infowars, saying X is the owner of the accounts and it has not given consent for them to be sold or transferred. Jones' personal X account, with 3.3 million followers, was not part of the auction, but Lopez will be deciding if it should be included in the liquidation. Jones has praised X owner Elon Musk on his show and suggested that Musk should buy Infowars. Musk has not responded publicly to that suggestion and was not among the bidders. Jones was permanently banned from Twitter in 2018 for abusive behavior, but Musk restored Jones’ account on the platform he has since renamed X in December last year. Jones alleges The Onion’s bid was the result of fraud and collusion involving many of the Sandy Hook families, the humor site and the court-appointed trustee. First United American Companies submitted a $3.5 million sealed bid, while The Onion offered $1.75 million in cash. But The Onion's bid also included a pledge by Sandy Hook families to forgo some or all of the auction proceeds due to them to give other creditors a total of $100,000 more than they would receive under other bids. The trustee, Christopher Murray, said that made The Onion's proposal better for creditors and he named it the winning bid. Jones and First United American Companies claimed that the bid violated Lopez’s rules for the auction by including multiple entities and lacking a valid dollar amount. Jones also alleged Murray improperly canceled an expected round of live bidding and only selected from among the two sealed bids that were submitted. Jones called the auction “rigged” and a “fraud” on his show, which airs on the Infowars website, radio stations and Jones' X account. He filed a counter lawsuit last week against Murray, The Onion's parent company and the Sandy Hook families in the bankruptcy court. In a court filing on Sunday, Murray called the allegations a “desperate attempt” to delay the sale of Infowars to The Onion and accused Jones, his lawyers and attorneys for First United American Companies of a “vicious smear campaign lobbing patently false accusations.” He also alleged Jones collaborated with First United American Companies to try to buy Infowars. Lopez’s September order on the auction procedures made a live bidding round optional. And it gave broad authority to Murray to conduct the sale, including the power to reject any bid, no matter how high, that was “contrary to the best interests” of Jones, his company and their creditors. The assets of Infowars' parent company, Free Speech Systems, that were up for sale included the Austin studio, Infowars' video archive, video production equipment, product trademarks, and Infowars' websites and social media accounts. Another auction of remaining assets is set for Dec. 10. Jones is appealing the $1.5 billion in judgments citing free speech rights, but has acknowledged that the school shooting happened . Many of Jones’ personal assets, including real estate, guns and other belongings, also are being sold as part of the bankruptcy. Documents filed in court this year say Jones had about $9 million in personal assets, while Free Speech Systems had about $6 million in cash and more than $1 million worth of inventory. ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — What's stoking the Denver Broncos' surprising surge is the growing connection between rookie quarterback Bo Nix and veteran wide receiver Courtland Sutton. Whenever the Broncos (7-5) need a clutch catch, a key flag or a timely touchdown, Sutton is usually the one delivering it like he did Sunday when he caught eight passes on 10 targets for 97 yards and a pair of touchdowns that sparked the Broncos' come-from-behind 29-19 win at Las Vegas. LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) — Quinton Cooley rushed for 166 yards and two touchdowns, Billy Lucas added 131 yards and a score, and Liberty gained 419 on the ground with four touchdowns in a 38-21 victory over Western Kentucky on Saturday. Liberty (8-2, 5-2 Conference USA) has won eight-plus games for the sixth consecutive season to keep alive hopes of a second straight trip to the conference championship game. The Flames play Sam Houston (8-3, 5-2) on Friday. Javascript is required for you to be able to read premium content. Please enable it in your browser settings.
Dutton takes the lead, but is he defying gravity?PPP, PMLN committees meet today to sort out issues Bilawal chaired virtual meeting Sunday with focus on those issues which have to be taken in meeting with PMLN ISLAMABAD: The Political Coordination Committee of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the government committee are expected to meet today (Monday) to take up the issues related to both the parties. The PPP and the government formed the committees after PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari expressed his disappointment and conveyed serious reservations to the PMLN for ignoring the PPP in consultations and over broken promises despite being a coalition partner of the Shehbaz Sharif government. In this regard, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari chaired a virtual meeting of PPP’s Political Coordination Committee on Sunday with focus on those issues which have to be taken in the meeting with the PMLN. The virtual meeting also discussed the current political situation of the country. The meeting was attended by former prime minister Raja Pervez Ashraf, parliamentary leader of the PPP in the Senate Senator Sherry Rehman, President PPP South Punjab Makhdoom Ahmed Mahmood, Syed Naveed Qamar, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, Governor Punjab Sardar Saleem Haider, Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Faisal Karim Kundi, Chief Minister Balochistan Mir Sarfraz Bugti and Ali Haider Gilani. Last week, Bilawal and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar held a meeting in which it was decided that the committees of PPP and PMLN will meet soon to sort out the conflicting issues between the coalition partners. It may be mentioned here that Bilawal has formed a committee to raise issues with the federal government and the committee comprises Raja Pervez Ashraf, Syed Naveed Qamar, Senator Sherry Rehman, Sindh CM Syed Murad Ali Shah, Balochistan CM Mir Sarfraz Bugti, Makhdoom Ahmed Mahmoud, Governor Punjab Sardar Saleem Haider, KP Governor Faisal Karim Kundi and Haider Gilani. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has also constituted a committee to resolve the issues between the PPP and PMLN and to foster cooperation on political and other matters. The committee members include Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Muhammad Ishaq Dar, Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif, Minister for Law Azam Nazeer Tarar, Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Khan Cheema, Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit Baltistan Engineer Amir Muqam, Advisor to Prime Minister Rana Sanaullah, Speaker Punjab Assembly Malik Ahmad Khan, Senior Punjab Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, PMLN leaders Khawaja Saad Rafique, Jaffar Khan Mandokhail and Bashir Ahmed Memon. While the standings say the Jets are in last, they keep rolling up the firsts. In October, when the Patriots beat them 25-22 in New England, the Jets became the first team in NFL history to lose a game in which they scored 20-plus points, didn’t commit a turnover and gave up less than 250 total yards. Before that day, teams with that stat profile had gone 750-0. Now there’s new piece of ignominy: According to ESPN Stats & Info, they are the first team in the Super Bowl era to be favored in nine of their first 12 games and have a record of 3-9 or worse. To put it in perspective, the Jets are 3-6 (33.3 percent) straight up in games in which they’ve been favored. Per Covers.com, favorites have an outright record of 135-60 (69.2 percent). The main reason for this is the serious — probably unprecedented — overhype of this team. When Aaron Rodgers was deemed recovered from his Achilles tear, the bandwagon passed go and went directly to Super Bowl, skipping the necessary stops of respectability, a winning record and the first playoff berth in 14 years. The Jets were scheduled for six prime-time games (one was since flexed out) and could be found on the left side of the betting line for quite a few games in which there was no justification for them to be favored — such as on the road against the Steelers and Cardinals. It seems so insane now. Incredibly, they have been the favorite each of the past six games, going 1-5 SU and 1-5 ATS as the season went from bad to worse to over to embarrassing to all-time low. On Sunday, the Jets are — finally — underdogs of 6.5 points at Miami. I see a motivational mismatch. The Dolphins have won three of their last four games to get to 5-7 and will be playing for their postseason lives. The Jets have lost eight of their last nine and get a free weekend getaway to sun, 77 degrees and South Beach. The spread, while it looks large in the Post Line, is really just one scoring play. The pick: Dolphins -6.5. New Orleans Saints (-4.5) over NEW YORK GIANTS The Saints come in missing Chris Olave, Rasheed Shaheed and Swiss Army knife Taysom Hill, and list their three interior offensive linemen as questionable. They still have Derek Carr and Alvin Kamara to go against a Giants defense that will be without Dexter Lawrence. Not only that, the Giants are the last winless home team in the league and have set an NFL record by going 11 games without an interception. And the forecast of 47 and partly sunny is fair enough for a southern dome team coming north in December. Jacksonville Jaguars (+3.5) over TENNESSEE TITANS The Jaguars perked up after Azeez Al-Shaair’s hit on a sliding Trevor Lawrence last week. Mac Jones came in and threw for 235 yards, two touchdowns and led a backdoor cover. Question is: Can you put any stock in two late scores given up by a team that was way ahead? Another question: Do you want to lay more than a field goal with a Titans team that’s 3-9? MINNESOTA VIKINGS (-5.5) over Atlanta Falcons Yes, many Falcons games end up getting decided by less than this spread, but their last road game was a 38-6 loss in Denver, where the bottom fell out. The Dirty Birds have gone from 6-3 to 6-6 and scored an average of 12.0 ppg in the three losses with Kirk Cousins throwing six interceptions and zero touchdown passes in those games. He’d had designs on returning to Minnesota as a conquering hero but Brian Flores’ defense will have other ideas. PHILADELPHIA EAGLES (-12.5) over Carolina Panthers Kudos to the Cats, who have salvaged Bryce Young’s career and covered four spreads in a row, including near-misses against the Chiefs and Bucs. Still, there’s two touchdowns worth of difference between these rosters. That’s if the Eagles are motivated to bring the hammer down — and they should be, with DeVonta Smith returning and the push to get Saquon Barkley to 2,000 rushing yards in high gear. PITTSBURGH STEELERS (-6.5) over Cleveland Browns We got the full Jameis Winston Experience on Monday night — four touchdown passes and 497 passing yards when five and 499 would have been enough to cover in Denver. Instead, Winston threw an interception, his third of the game after two pick-sixes. You have to wonder how much the Browns have left emotionally at 3-9 on a short week with travel after such a disappointment. And now they face the 9-3 Steelers, who have had to wait only 21/2 weeks to seek revenge for their 24-19 loss in Cleveland. Las Vegas Raiders (+6.5) over TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS The Bucs won by a big margin two weeks ago at the Giants but that’s been a rare occurrence since the beginning of October. While the Raiders are 2-10 and have become somewhat of an anonymous team, they have two recent covers against the Chiefs. ARIZONA CARDINALS (-2.5) over Seattle Seahawks The Cardinals had won and covered four in a row before disintegrating offensively in a 16-6 loss at Seattle two weeks ago. They then blew a 19-6 lead in Minnesota and lost, 23-22. So Kyler Murray’s at the controls of a healthy, angry team that also has a rapid revenge motive against a Seattle foe that had no business winning last week’s game at the Jets. Buffalo Bills (-4.5) over LOS ANGELES RAMS The Bills had to take the cross-country trip after their 35-10 snow globe rout of the 49ers that was punctuated by Josh Allen’s MVP moment on the touchdown he both threw and scored. Are they ripe for a bit of a lull against a dangerous Rams team? Normally I’d say yes, but at 10-2, the Bills sit just a game behind the Chiefs for top seed — with the tiebreaker — and the potential to get the AFC title game in Orchard Park will keep them very much interested. SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS (-4) over Chicago Bears The Bears are certainly a candidate for the new-coach bounce as Thomas Brown replaces Matt Eberflus after the disastrous ending in Detroit on Thanksgiving. Unlike Robert Saleh, who was more a scapegoat, a case can be made that Eberflus was the Bears’ biggest problem. However, there are injury concerns for their top weapons D’Andre Swift, DJ Moore and Keenan Allen, and the 49ers are far from out of it in the NFC West even at 5-7. Los Angeles Chargers (+4) over KANSAS CITY CHIEFS The Chiefs have the best record in the NFL at 11-1 and their record against the spread is lower-middle of the pack at 5-7. The real alarms sound when you look at the last six games, where they are 5-1 SU and 0-6 ATS. Yes, Kansas City has not covered a spread since Oct. 20 (Week 7) — so long ago, the Mets played that night. Jim Harbaugh will look to turn this into a slugfest, and Andy Reid won’t have Harrison Butker around at the end. Betting on the NFL? Monday DALLAS COWBOYS (+5.5) over Cincinnati Bengals Cowboys have some extra rest after Thanksgiving and will throw at Joe Burrow the healthiest version of their defense they’ve had all season. DeMarcus Lawrence and Trevon Diggs could return to join the likes of Micah Parsons, Daron Bland and DeMarvion Overshown. The Bengals have lost four games in which they’ve scored 33 points or more. Best bets: Cardinals, Chargers, Cowboys Lock of the week: Cardinals (Locks 7-6 in 2024) Last week: 8-8 overall, 2-1 Best Bets Thursday: Packers.
BAMAKO, Mali (AP) — Mali's ruling junta arrested one of the country's top politicians Wednesday for criticizing the military rulers of neighboring Burkina Faso, according to his son and a judiciary source. Issa Kaou N’Djim, who previously supported Mali's current military leader Col. Assimi Goita before distancing himself, was arrested on charges of insulting a foreign head of state, which is a crime in Mali, an employee of the court system said. The court employee spoke to the The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to talk to reporters. N'Djim had claimed on the Joliba TV News broadcaster on Sunday that the military rulers of Burkina Faso, a close ally of Mali, made up evidence of a foiled coup in November. The politician was placed in custody and taken to the main prison in Mali's capital Bamako on Wednesday, his son, Ousmane N’djim, said. “He knows he is being arrested because of his political struggle." The director of Joliba TV News has also been called for interrogation by the authorities. Mali and Burkina Faso have been ruled by military regimes since , capitalizing on popular discontent with previous democratically elected governments over security issues. Together with Niger, another junta-led country in the region, they form the Alliance of Sahel States, or AES. N’Djim was one of the vice presidents of the National Transitional Council (CNT), Mali’s legislative body under the junta. He later distanced himself from the military regime and said he favored a return to electoral democracy. In 2021, he was handed a six-month prison sentence after he criticized the military regime on social media. The security situation in the three AES countries has analysts say, with a record number of attacks by Islamic extremists. Government forces have been accused of killing civilians they suspect of collaborating with militants while . In June, Malian authorities . Amnesty International called for N'Djim's release in a post on the social media platform X. ___ This story was first published on Nov. 13, 2024. It was updated on Nov. 26, 2024 to correct that the month of an alleged foiled coup attempt in Burkina Faso mentioned by a politician was in November, not September. Baba Ahmed, The Associated Press

Google is 'three times a monopolist' says DOJ in anti-trust lawsuit Marko Zivkovic | Nov 25, 2024 The DOJ has accused Google of being a monopoly in the advertising market. 0 Facebook x.com Reddit Google has been the subject of antitrust lawsuits since 2023 , with the DOJ claiming that the company was an illegal monopoly in the search market. In August of 2024, the courts sided with the DOJ, but another lawsuit concerning the company's advertising technology followed shortly after. The Department of Justice provided its closing arguments in the latest case against Google on Monday. Its lawyer, Aaron Teitelbaum, claimed that Google had linked together its ad-related technologies in a way that stifled the growth of rival products, forcing publishers to rely on Google's systems for ad revenue. A News Corp. executive claimed that their company was effectively held hostage, as it would have lost $9 million in 2017 had it abandoned Google's advertising platform. In response, the lawyer representing Google, Vidushi Dyall, pushed back and questioned the lack of evidence, as the DOJ had failed to provide examples of rival products directly affected by Google's advertising technologies. The judge presiding in this case, Judge Leonie Brinkema, questioned the DOJ, and pointed out that advertiser feedback would be valuable in the case, as was reported by Ars Technica . Brinkema is set to issue a ruling on the case in the following months, and it's possible that she may side with the DOJ against Google, as the company's search technology was already declared an illegal monopoly. Google may be forced to sell off its Chrome browser as a result of a different trial, and the company is far from enthusiastic about it, saying that this could harm browser security. The DOJ hopes that Google will be forced to sell off its Ad Manager as well, since it represents a significant source of revenue for the company. It is unclear how the judge will rule. Regardless of the ruling and punishments levied against Google, there will be appeals through 2025. The incoming administration is a wild card that could change everything for Google's case. How the anti-trust lawsuits against Google could impact Apple's cases In March of 2024, the Department of Justice, together with multiple U.S. states , has also filed an antitrust lawsuit against Apple, accusing the company of monopolistic practices . The company filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit in August of 2024, and has asked the presiding judge to dismiss the case in November of the same year. The Department of Justice has also claimed that Apple is a monopoly. The ongoing anti-trust lawsuit against Apple alleges that the company is a monopoly because it restricts iMessage conversations to iPhone users, and prevents third parties from accessing NFC technology, among other things. Meanwhile, Apple has introduced RCS support with iOS 18 , and the DOJ case may not be an accurate accusation. The outcome of Google's anti-trust lawsuit about its advertising technologies is likely to influence the outcome of the case against Apple. At the same time, the arrival of the new administration could lead to an entirely different approach for these high-profile cases.

ATLANTA (AP) — Deliberations are underway in Atlanta after a year of testimony in the gang and racketeering trial that originally included the rapper Young Thug. Jurors are considering whether to convict Shannon Stillwell and Deamonte Kendrick, who raps as Yak Gotti, on gang, murder, drug and gun charges. The original indictment charged 28 people with conspiring to violate Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. Opening statements in the trial for six of those defendants happened a year ago . Four of them, including Young Thug, pleaded guilty last month. The rapper was freed on probation. Stillwell and Kendrick rejected plea deals after more than a week of negotiations, and their lawyers chose not to present evidence or witnesses. Both seemed to be in good spirits Tuesday morning after closings wrapped the previous night. Kendrick was chatting and laughing with Stillwell and his lawyers before the jury arrived for instructions. Kendrick and Stillwell were charged in the 2015 killing of Donovan Thomas Jr., also known as “Big Nut,” in an Atlanta barbershop. Prosecutors painted Stillwell and Kendrick as members of a violent street gang called Young Slime Life, or YSL, co-founded in 2012 by Young Thug, whose real name is Jeffery Williams. During closings on Monday, they pointed to tattoos, song lyrics and social media posts they said proved members, including Stillwell, admitted to killing people in rival gangs. Prosecutors say Thomas was in a rival gang. Stillwell was also charged in the 2022 killing of Shymel Drinks, which prosecutors said was in retaliation for the killing of two YSL associates days earlier. Defense attorneys Doug Weinstein and Max Schardt said the state presented unreliable witnesses, weak evidence and cherry-picked lyrics and social media posts to push a false narrative about Stillwell, Kendrick and the members of YSL. Schardt, Stillwell's attorney, reminded the jury that alleged YSL affiliates said during the trial that they had lied to police. Law enforcement played a “sick game” by promising they would escape long prison sentences if they said what police wanted them to say, Schardt said. He theorized that one of those witnesses could have killed Thomas. The truth is that their clients were just trying to escape poverty through music, Schardt said. “As a whole, we know the struggles that these communities have had,” Schardt said. “A sad, tacit acceptance that it’s either rap, prison or death.” Young Thug’s record label is also known as YSL, an acronym of Young Stoner Life. Kendrick was featured on two popular songs from the label’s compilation album Slime Language 2, “Take It to Trial" and “Slatty," which prosecutors presented as evidence in the trial. Weinstein, Kendrick’s defense attorney, said during closings it was wrong for prosecutors to target the defendants for their music and lyrics. Prosecutor Simone Hylton disagreed, and said surveillance footage and phone evidence supported her case. “They have the audacity to think they can just brag about killing somebody and nobody’s gonna hold them accountable,” Hylton said. The trial had more than its fair share of delays. Jury selection took nearly 10 months , and Stillwell was stabbed last year at the Fulton County jail, which paused trial proceedings. Judge Paige Reese Whitaker took over after Fulton County Superior Court Chief Judge Ural Glanville was removed from the case in July because he had a meeting with prosecutors and a state witness without defense attorneys present. Whitaker often lost patience with prosecutors over moves such as not sharing evidence with defense attorneys, once accusing them of “poor lawyering.” But the trial sped up under her watch. In October, four defendants, including Young Thug , pleaded guilty, with the rapper entering a non-negotiated or “blind” plea, meaning he didn't have a deal worked out with prosecutors. Nine people charged in the indictment, including rapper Gunna , accepted plea deals before the trial began. Charges against 12 others are pending. Prosecutors dropped charges against one defendant after he was convicted of murder in an unrelated case. ___ Kramon is a corps member for The Associated Press/Report for America Statehouse News Initiative. Follow Kramon on X: @charlottekramon Charlotte Kramon, The Associated PressISLAMABAD -- Pakistan has sealed off the capital, Islamabad, ahead of a planned rally by supporters of imprisoned former premier Imran Khan . It’s the second time in as many months that authorities have imposed such measures to thwart tens of thousands of people from gathering in the city to demand Khan’s release. The rally is planned for Sunday. The latest lockdown coincides with the visit of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko to Islamabad on Monday. Local media reported that the Interior Ministry is considering a suspension of mobile phone services in parts of Pakistan in the coming days. On Friday, the National Highways and Motorway Police announced that key routes would close for maintenance. It advised people to avoid unnecessary travel and said the decision was taken following intelligence reports that “angry protesters” are planning to create a law and order situation and damage public and private property during Sunday's planned rally. “There are reports that protesters are coming with sticks and slingshots,” the statement added. Shipping containers in different colors, a familiar sight to people living and working in Islamabad, reappeared on key roads Saturday to throttle traffic. Pakistan has already banned gatherings of five or more people in Islamabad for two months to deter Khan’s supporters and activists from his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, or PTI. Authorities have also installed containers to block highways and roads linking the PTI strongholds of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to stop people reaching Islamabad. Ali Amin Gandapur, the chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, said he would lead the march from the northwest and that arrangements had been made to remove hurdles and blockades. Khan has been in prison for more than a year and has over 150 criminal cases against him. But he remains popular and the PTI says the cases are politically motivated. A three-day shutdown was imposed in Islamabad for a security summit last month.Syria latest: Syrians celebrate in the streets as Russian media says Assad has arrived in Moscow
A proposal for diversified ownership of equity clearing corporations (CCs), which are currently entirely owned by stock exchanges, was made by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). In order to ensure that clearing corporations can function primarily in the public interest and not for commercial reasons, SEBI anticipates that their ownership will be broad-based and diversified. SEBI said CCs perceived as independent In a draft paper, SEBI stated that 'Clearing Corporations must be and perceived as, truly independent of exchanges, especially in such interoperable segments, to ensure that there is a level playing field across 'Market Infrastructure Institutions' (MIIs) with no perception of any perverse conflict of interest.' The general public was asked by SEBI (Securities and Exchange Board of India) to respond by December 13. Let us know! 👂 What type of content would you like to see from us this year? Options for shareholding of CCs (clearing corporations) The first option proposed by the regulator would allow current exchange shareholders to directly own 49 per cent of the clearing corporation, with the parent exchange initially holding 51 per cent. Eventually, the exchange may be forced to reduce its holdings to 15 per cent. Another option is for exchange shareholders to directly own all of the equity, in which case they would have the freedom to trade their shares in the CC. According to SEBI, this would enable the CC to separate from its parent exchange in a way that is equitable to the parent exchange's current shareholders. Clearing Corporations operate as profitable public utlities The regulator has also recommended that CCs function as profitable public utilities that reinvest in infrastructure, technology, and risk control. Furthermore, fee structures ought to stay affordable without raising investors' expenses. To improve systemic resilience and lessen dependency on a single entity, the regulator has recommended supporting multi-asset CCs while keeping several CCs.Like Fredericksburg, Culpeper eyes school zone cameras to catch speeders
Vice President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo today expressed his satisfaction at the US Exim Bank’s approval of the over US$526 million loan for Guyana’s Gas to Energy (GtE) project. “We’re happy that the loan has been approved,” Jagdeo said during a press conference, noting that the approval contradicts claims by the Alliance For Change (AFC) that the loan would not be approved. “I don’t want to rub their noses in the dust but this is a vindication of all that we’ve been saying all along...they’re focused on whether the project will be done on time or delayed a bit; it does not matter to me. What matters is the project is being implemented and will deliver benefits to the people of the country,” he said. The Vice President contended that nothing stopped the former APNU+AFC government from launching a similar project when they were in office but they lacked the vision to do so. “APNU would never work on a project like this. They could have done so since 2016 and they never did,” he said. The Government will commence repaying the loan from May 1, 2031, at an interest rate of 4%. The repayment period is for 15 years. This loan will be instrumental in funding the development of the project’s onshore component, consisting of a 300-megawatt (MW) power plant and natural gas liquids (NGL) processing plant. Responding to criticisms that the Government should desist from borrowing, Jagdeo reminded that the loan only covers 25% of the total cost of the project. The remaining sum is financed by the Government and through an arrangement with the main offshore operator ExxonMobil. He reminded that oil revenue is currently “just 30%” of the National Budget and also that the project contributes to the transition to clean and reliable energy. Further, the benefits of the project will see Guyana saving 460 tonnes of carbon from being emitted into the atmosphere per year which, he said, is equivalent to one million barrels of oil per year, save $100 million in fuel cost and reduce the cost of electricity for consumers.
