Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel use towers. Published: November 27, 2024 12:00 AM IST By Edited by Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited and Sunil Mittal’s Bharti Airtel Limited are up for a fierce competition from an American player who is very likely to overtake these two telecommunication giants. Jio and Airtel are the two biggest players in the field on mobile communication and high-speed internet data, at least till now. Both of them are providing latest features like 5G network and OTT platforms at sustainable prices. But, it all seems to end pretty soon! Starlink of SpaceX, a company owned by Elon Musk, has launched a new satellite communication service “direct-to-cell”. Through this technology, users will be able to connect their smartphones directly to Starlink’s satellites. This means that there will not be a need for traditional mobile towers and internet and call connectivity will be available even in those places where telecom companies have not been able to install cell towers. Along with Starlink’s direct-to-cell service launch, the SpaceX team also announced partnerships with several major telecom companies. Elon Musk himself has confirmed this list by a post. Starlink has been continuously expanding its satellite communications network for the past few months. The company is constantly deploying new satellites along with launching new rockets to increase the speed. According to a report by TweakTown, users are now enjoying the internet at speeds of 250-350Mbps. This is much higher than the 50-60Mbps speed available through fiber in South Australian areas. This new service of Starlink is definitely a unique achievement in satellite communication. The service providing a direct connection to the satellite to the smartphone will not require any kind of cell tower. With this, communication services will be easily available even in areas where there is no coverage at present. SpaceX is constantly deploying new satellites to increase connectivity around the world. By integrating satellite technology with the existing mobile network, the service offers text messages, calling, and data services without any special hardware or apps. Apart from expanding mobile coverage, direct-to-cell technology can also prove to be very useful in emergencies. Usually, when a disaster like cyclone or earthquake occurs, there is a problem like mobile tower collapse, problem in wiring or malfunction. But if the phones are connected to the satellite network, connectivity will remain operational even at the site of the disaster and emergency services support will be available without delay. In addition to expanding mobile coverage, the direct-to-cell service will also offer connectivity to millions of Internet of Things (IoT) devices. SpaceX claims that no special or additional hardware is required to connect devices through this technology. Users will continue to get uninterrupted connectivity during emergencies, especially while traveling in rural areas or dead zones. SpaceX is currently manufacturing advanced rockets and spacecraft. Elon Musk’s company is also launching spacecraft and rockets to deploy Starlink satellites. Direct-to-cell satellites will currently be launched on SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket and Starship. If Elon Musk’s technology succeeds, then the future of technology will definitely be changed completely. This will have a profound impact on the telecom industry and the need for mobile towers may gradually end. Starlink is a satellite internet service through which high-speed data is provided in more than 100 countries. Unlike cable-based broadband services, Starlink works anywhere where there is a direct view of the sky. For breaking news and live news updates, like us on or follow us on and . The Principled Accountable Coalition for Edmonton (PACE) and TAPYeg , two groups that announced early intentions to form municipal political parties, are merging under the PACE banner. Leaders from both groups told Postmedia Thursday the goal is to unite for a better chance at winning votes next October. Neither are officially registered as local political parties and no candidates have been announced. The two groups share values of keeping taxes lower, safety and security, business-friendly policies, sticking to the city’s core responsibilities, and accountability, said Doug Main, currently a vice-president for PACE. The board of the refreshed party will include an equal split of PACE and TAPYeg. Main called the merger “historic.” He and Jeffrey Hansen Carlson, a co-founder of TAPYeg, are hoping to build an established municipal party in the city that will live beyond the 2025 election. They heard about a need for co-ordination from business leaders and some in the community to avoid splitting the vote come next October. After some early discussions, plans firmed up to join in recent weeks. “I don’t want to oversell this, but really it’s huge. You’ve got an opportunity for a political party. You’ve got two disparate yet philosophically aligned groups coming together — the heft, the muscle, the commitment, the talent. I’ve been around politics, federally and provincially, for quite a while. I’m pretty impressed,” Main said. “There are still some details to work out — selecting candidates and some of the formal aspects that are necessary for this to be a trusted institution in the city for decades to come. But the people, the values, the effort, the commitment — this is a very unique and significant opportunity for Edmontonians,” Hansen-Carlson said. While neither party has announced candidates, both had individuals working in different parts of the city to start building momentum and gather support — “ward champions” for TAPYeg and “pace setters” for PACE. Currently they are working to get the 1,000 signatures needed to register as a political party and hope to reach that goal by Christmas. Mayoral candidate and current city Coun. Tim Cartmell is also planning to launch a municipal political party with a similar focus on safety and security and fiscal responsibility. ‘Common sense’ Main, a former Progressive Conservative MLA in Alberta, isn’t opposed to the “conservative” label for PACE, but it’s not a word he would use himself, nor is it one he’s heard at their meetings. Rather, he hears “common sense, business-friendly, community-oriented.” The party will stay away from a “hard left, hard right kind of ideology,” focusing on local issues instead of getting “distracted by trying to solve international problems.” “We want the city to focus on the things that a city should focus on — clear the snow, fix the potholes, mow the grass, collect the garbage. Those aren’t ideological, partisan issues,” Main said. “There’s no way anybody in Edmonton is going to solve forest fires in Australia. Focus on what’s going on here.” He agrees the party could also be seen as a referendum on Edmonton’s municipal plan, the City Plan, with frustrations around bike lanes, neighbourhood renewals, public consultations, and the 15-minute city planning principle — though he knows the conspiracy theory is not true. PACE is not affiliated with provincial or federal political parties. Hansen-Carlson said they want to be a party that enables good ideas and empowers experts regardless of where they may fall on a political spectrum. “Good ideas come from all across the spectrum,” he said. “This city needs to get really good at doing great ideas, and we need to empower people that want to take risks and build it.” Hansen-Carlson will be known to some Edmontonians as the man behind the push to build a gondola across the North Saskatchewan River. But since city council grounded that idea in 2022, he doesn’t think it’s coming back. “This mayor and council chased away $175 million (of private money) that was going to be invested in building the experience economy in our core at a time when the city was desperate for something, because their egos got in the way of a sound decision,” he said. “But that money is never coming back to Edmonton.” Neither Hansen-Carlson or Main plan to run for office. lboothby@postmedia.com @laurby Recommended from Editorial Edmonton Coun. 11 Of The Most Anticipated Gadgets Expected To Release In 2025
has seen its user base soar since the U.S. presidential election, boosted by people seeking refuge from Elon Musk’s X, which they view as increasingly leaning too far to the right given its owner’s support of President-elect Donald Trump, or wanting an alternative to Meta’s Threads and its algorithms. The platform grew out of the company then known as , championed by its former CEO Jack Dorsey. Its decentralized approach to social networking was eventually . That’s unlikely now that the two companies have parted ways. But Bluesky’s growth trajectory — with a user base that has more than doubled since October — could make it a serious competitor to other social platforms. But with growth comes growing pains. It’s not just human users who’ve been flocking to Bluesky but also bots, including those designed to create partisan division or direct users to junk websites. The skyrocketing user base — now surpassing — is the biggest test yet for a relatively young platform that has branded itself as a alternative free of the problems plaguing its competitors. According to research firm Similarweb, Bluesky added 7.6 million monthly active app users on iOS and Android in November, an increase of 295.4% since October. It also saw 56.2 million desktop and mobile web visits, in the same period, up 189% from October. Besides the U.S. elections, Bluesky also got a boost when X was . “They got this spike in attention, they’ve crossed the threshold where it is now worth it for people to flood the platform with spam,” said Laura Edelson, an assistant professor of computer science at Northeastern University and a member of Issue One’s Council for Responsible Social Media. “But they don’t have the cash flow, they don’t have the established team that a larger platform would, so they have to do it all very, very quickly.” To manage growth for its tiny staff, Bluesky started as an invitation-only space until it opened to the public in February. That period gave the site time to build out moderation tools and other distinctive features to , such as “starter packs” that provide lists of topically curated feeds. Meta recently announced that it is testing a similar feature. Compared to the bigger players like Meta’s platforms or X, Bluesky has a “quite different” value system, said Claire Wardle, a professor at Cornell University and an expert in misinformation. This includes giving users more control over their experience. “The first generation of social media platforms connected the world, but ended up consolidating power in the hands of a few corporations and their leaders,” in March. “Our online experience doesn’t have to depend on billionaires unilaterally making decisions over what we see. On an open social network like Bluesky, you can shape your experience for yourself.” Because of this mindset, Bluesky has achieved a scrappy underdog status that has attracted users who’ve grown tired of the big players. “People had this idea that it was going to be a different type of social network,” Wardle said. “But the truth is, when you get lots of people in a place and there are eyeballs, it means that it’s in other people’s interests to use bots to create, you know, information that aligns with their perspective.” Little data has emerged to help quantify the rise in impersonator accounts, artificial intelligence-fueled networks and other potentially harmful content on Bluesky. But in recent weeks, users have begun reporting large numbers of apparent AI bots following them, or making seemingly automated in replies. Lion Cassens, a Bluesky user and doctoral candidate in the Netherlands, found one such network by accident — a group of German-language accounts with similar bios and AI-generated profile pictures posting in replies to three German newspapers. “I noticed some weird replies under a news post by the German newspaper ‘Die Ziet,’” he said in an email to The Associated Press. “I have a lot of trust in the moderation mechanism on Bluesky, especially compared to Twitter since the layoffs and due to Musk’s more radical stance on freedom of speech. But AI bots are a big challenge, as they will only improve. I hope social media can keep up with that.” Cassens said the bots’ messages have been relatively innocuous so far, but he was concerned about how they could be repurposed in the future to mislead. There are also signs that foreign disinformation narratives have made their way to Bluesky. The disinformation research group Alethea pointed to one low-traction post sharing a false claim about ABC News that had circulated on Russian Telegram channels. Copycat accounts are another challenge. In late November, Alexios Mantzarlis, director of the Security, Trust and Safety Initiative at Cornell Tech, found that of the top 100 most followed named individuals on Bluesky, 44% had at least one duplicate account posing as them. Two weeks later, Mantzarlis said Bluesky had removed around two-thirds of the duplicate accounts he’d initially detected — a sign the site was aware of the issue and attempting to address it. Bluesky earlier this month that it had quadrupled its moderation team to keep up with its growing user base. The company also announced it had introduced a new system to detect impersonation and was working to improve its Community Guidelines to provide more detail on what’s allowed. Because of the way the site is built, users also have the option to subscribe to third-party “Labelers” that outsource content moderation by tagging accounts with warnings and context. The company didn’t respond to multiple requests for comment for this story. Even as its challenges aren’t yet at the scale other platforms face, Bluesky is at a “crossroads,” said Edward Perez, a board member at the nonpartisan nonprofit OSET Institute, who previously led Twitter’s civic integrity team. “Whether BlueSky likes it or not, it is being pulled into the real world,” Perez said, noting that it needs to quickly prioritize threats and work to mitigate them if it hopes to continue to grow. That said, disinformation and bots won’t be Bluesky’s only challenges in the months and years to come. As a text-based social network, its entire premise is falling out of favor with younger generations. A recent Pew Research Center poll found that only 17% of American teenagers used X, for instance, down from 23% in 2022. For teens and young adults, TikTok, Instagram and other visual-focused platforms are the places to be. Political polarization is also going against Bluesky ever reaching the size of TikTok, Instagram or even X. “Bluesky is not trying to be all things to all people,” Wardle said, adding that, likely, the days of a Facebook or Instagram emerging where they’re “trying to keep everybody happy” are over. Social platforms are increasingly splintered along political lines and when they aren’t — see Meta’s platforms — the companies behind them are actively working to de-emphasize political content and news. Two conservative-leaning Edmonton municipal parties merge under PACE banner
Haute Beauty Expert-Approved Holiday Gifts For Everyone On Your ListNEW DELHI: The Congress party has fielded veteran leader and former Delhi Mayor Farhad Suri against AAP stalwart and former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia in the Jangpura assembly constituency. This development sets the stage for a high-stakes battle in the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections. The announcement came late Tuesday evening with the release of Congress's second list of 26 candidates. The party’s Central Election Committee (CEC) finalized the names during a meeting chaired by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, with former party chief Rahul Gandhi and other senior leaders participating via video conference. In another key contest, Jitender Kumar Kochar will take on AAP’s Somnath Bharti in the Malviya Nagar constituency. Bharti has held the seat for three consecutive terms, making it a crucial battleground for Congress’s revival efforts. Among other notable candidates, Rajesh Lilothia has been fielded for the Seemapuri seat, Asim Ahmed for Matia Mahal, and Devender Sehrawat for Bijwasan. The grand old party is also considering former MLA and All India Mahila Congress chief Alka Lamba to contest against Delhi Chief Minister Atishi from the Kalkaji constituency. Lamba, a former AAP member, previously won the Chandni Chowk seat under the AAP banner but later switched to Congress. Her potential contest with Atishi promises to be a closely watched fight given their shared political history. The first list, released last Thursday, included 21 names, notably featuring former MP Sandeep Dikshit, who is set to take on AAP’s Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi constituency. This sets up a direct contest between Dikshit and AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal, a significant battle in the upcoming elections. Qazi Mohammad Nizamuddin, the Congress’s Delhi in-charge, emphasized that the second list was finalized after extensive deliberations. "The screening committee had already reviewed candidates, and the CEC provided a detailed, seat-specific analysis. Most seats have been cleared, and the remaining names will be announced soon," he said. With the inclusion of seasoned leaders and high-profile candidates, Congress is aiming to mount a formidable challenge against the Aam Aadmi Party, signaling its intent to regain lost ground in Delhi politics.

The growing debt burden of the state-run distribution companies has become a significant concern for the state government, which is exploring ways to rescue them from the crisis. By Anil Kumar Published Date - 23 November 2024, 04:01 PM Representational Image Hyderabad: With accumulated losses of the State-run distribution companies (DISCOMs) touching over Rs.65,000 crore, the Telangana State Electricity Regulation Commission (TGERC) has reportedly directed the Discoms to comply with the standard performance regulations to improve their efficiency. Major issues like transmission and distribution losses, inadequate infrastructure and near obsolete equipment, besides an array of issues compelled the TGERC to direct Discoms to set right things and improve their financial position and efficiency, sources said. The mounting debt burden of the State-run distribution companies has become a major concern for the State government, which is looking for ways to bale them out of the crisis. Also Read Telangana Discoms propose revised power tariffs, TGERC to hold public hearings According to officials, the losses have reduced profitability of distribution companies, leading to resource constraints and making it tough to invest in infrastructure upgrades. The issue is grave in rural areas as the dearth of infrastructure in particular is affecting the quality and consistency of power supply. To make up for the revenue gaps, Discoms have been borrowing from banks and other financial institutions to procure and pay for generators and in the process, they have been bearing the interest cost, officials said, adding that due to the cash crunch, the Discoms have been facing difficulties in making payments to generators due to which they have been taking working capital loans to meet the obligations. Given the precarious situation, the TGERC has reportedly asked Discomsto go for standard performance regulation measures like going ahead with phase-wise limited automation and technology adoption, address skill gaps and workforce issues, improve revenue collections and adopt regulatory compliance and monitoring to bale them out of the dicey situation. However, experts in the sector say that the subsidised power supply, which was often not being fully compensated by the government, was leading to revenue shortfalls. The inadequate tariff revisions due to political reasons was resulting in recovering the operational and maintenance costs. The dependence on thermal power plants and high power purchase costs were also impacting the power utilities and the government must address those issues, experts said.
