Fall is the best time to think about cooking soup. Here’s 5 recipes you’ll want to tryWashington — Rep. Jason Crow of Colorado, the top Democrat on the bipartisan House task force investigating the assassination attempts against President-elect Donald Trump, said he's concerned that "there's a culture of silence" at the Secret Service that prevents agents from speaking out when they should. "I was struck by the stories in the recount of the specific actions of officers and agents on the ground that day," Crow said on "Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan." "There were some heroic ones, but there were also a lot of examples of people that knew that something was wrong and they didn't say anything." The task force, which the House voted to establish earlier this year, in recent days wrapped up its work probing security failures surrounding the July 13 assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, and the Sept. 15 foiled attempt in West Palm Beach, Florida. In the wake of the initial attack, the Secret Service came under intense scrutiny, leading to the resignation of its director. Last week, Secret Service Acting Director Ronald Rowe testified before the panel in its final hearing, where he acknowledged the Secret Service's failure to adequately secure the area in Butler, noted "critical gaps" within the agency's operations and said "we did not meet the expectations of the American public, Congress, and our protectees." He noted that it has been his "singular focus to bring much-needed reform to the Secret Service. He added that the agency is "operating in a heightened threat environment, with expanding protection requirements." "The responsibilities of the Secret Service are critical to the national security of the United States," Rowe said, adding that "our agency is not defined by one failure, but by our ability to learn from mistakes." Task force chairman Rep. Mike Kelly, a Pennsylvania Republican whose district includes Butler, said the agency lacks the leadership it needs. And he argued that when the Secret Service was brought under the umbrella of the Department of Homeland Security, "they took away their identity — their exclusivity." "When you're the best of the best, when you're the elite of the elites, if you lose that, then all of a sudden you just become part of a team," Kelly said on "Face the Nation." "That was a huge mistake." On the July 13 attack, Kelly said the Secret Service failed "at every step of the way." "They failed from the first thing, from the picking of the site, the preparing the site to the coordination of the site, the ability to communicate," Kelly said, adding that there was no team meeting before the event, and local law enforcement wasn't included in the planning. "On July 13, there was a lack of professionalism, there was a lack of concern, there was a lack of coordination, and the ability to communicate is the one thing I'll never understand," Kelly said. "You knew you couldn't talk to each other. Why did you go forward?" Crow said important questions remain about the shooter in Butler and would-be shooter in West Palm Beach, saying that the task force submitted numerous requests to the Justice Department and FBI about their motivations. Crow claimed that the requests have been denied because the criminal investigations are ongoing, calling it an "unacceptable position" and accused the agencies of trying to "stonewall" Congress on the issue. The Colorado Democrat argued that when it comes to the Secret Service, there is a "systematic problem here." He noted that although there are "plenty of extraordinary agents and officers" in the Secret Service, there was a "failure of mission" in Butler. "The structure, the personnel, the staffing of the Secret Service hasn't changed in years, at the same time as we are now asking them to do things that they didn't do a decade ago," Crow said, saying the tempo of the job leaves agents without time for adequate training. "We are not developing their skills and their training, and I think you see the results of that." Meanwhile, Kelly said the task force has been working since Day One to try to help restore trust and confidence in the Secret Service, which he said was likely at "the lowest ebb" in its history. And he acknowledged the relentless pressure on the Secret Service. "You've got to be ready every single moment for anything that could possibly happen. Is that a difficult task? Yes, is it almost impossible?" Kelly said. "But you know what's not impossible, our dedication to the fact that we're going to do the best we can do every single day to ensure that the American people have the faith and trust and confidence they must have in us." Alabama A&M football player Medrick Burnett has died from complications from a head injury after a head-on collision with another player suffered during an October 26 game. Burnett, 20, took a head-on blow during a game against Alabama State, sending him to the hospital. Now, a month after the game, he has died from his injuries, the Daily Mail reported. Not long after being admitted to the hospital, Burnett was listed in stable condition. However, he had “several brain bleeds and swelling of the brain,” said his sister, Dominece. “He had to have a tube to drain to relieve the pressure, and after 2 days of severe pressure, we had to opt for a craniotomy, which was the last resort to help try to save his life,” she added. The school has released a statement lamenting the loss of the redshirt freshman. “Today, our Bulldog family is heartbroken by the loss of Medrick Burnett Jr.,” Alabama A&M Athletics Director Dr. Paul A. Bryant said in a statement. “Medrick was more than an exceptional athlete; he was a remarkable young man whose positive energy, leadership, and compassion left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him.” “While words cannot adequately express our grief, we are humbled by the strength of his family, who stood by his side throughout this unimaginable ordeal,” the statement added. Burnett’s family has set up a GoFundMe page to help with his family’s medical and housing expenses. “Medrick Burnett Jr. will forever be remembered as a Bulldog. His spirit will remain an inspiration to all of us, reminding us of the importance of unity, resilience, and love,” the team said in a statement. The day after Thanksgiving still reigns for now as the unofficial kickoff of the holiday shopping season even if it’s lost some luster. Analysts reported seeing the biggest crowds at stores that offered real savings. They say many shoppers are being cautious with their discretionary spending despite the easing of inflation. Stores are even more under the gun to get shoppers in to buy early and in bulk since there are five fewer days between Thanksgiving and Christmas this year. Online sales figures from Thanksgiving Day gave retailers a reason to remain hopeful for a lucrative end to the year. Trump and Republicans in Congress eye an ambitious 100-day agenda, starting with tax cuts WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans swept to power on Election Day and now control the House, the Senate and the White House, with plans for an ambitious 100-day agenda come January. Their to-do list includes extending tax breaks, cutting social programs, building the border wall to stop immigration and rolling back President Joe Biden's green energy policies. Atop that list is a plan to renew some $4 trillion in expiring tax cuts that were a signature domestic achievement of Republican Donald Trump’s first term as president. It's an issue that may define his return to the White House. The ruble's in a slump. For the Kremlin, that's a two-edged sword Russia’s ruble is sagging against other currencies, complicating the Kremlin’s efforts to keep consumer inflation under control with one hand even as it overheats the economy with spending on the war against Ukraine with the other. Over time a weaker ruble could mean higher prices for imports from China, Russia's main trade partner these days. President Vladimir Putin says things are under control. One wild card is sanctions against a key Russian bank that have disrupted foreign trade payments. If Russia finds a workaround for that, the ruble could regain some of its recent losses. Why your favorite catalogs are smaller this holiday season PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — While retailers hope to go big this holiday season, customers may notice that the catalogs arriving in their mailboxes are smaller. Many of the millions of catalogs getting sent to U.S. homes were scaled down to save on postage and paper. Some gift purveyors are sending out postcards. In a sign of the times, the American Catalog Mailers Association rebranded itself in May as the American Commerce Marketing Association. Despite no longer carrying an extended inventory of goods, industry experts say catalogs help retailers cut through the noise and still hold their own in value because of growing digital advertising costs. Massachusetts lawmakers push for an effort to ban all tobacco sales over time BOSTON (AP) — A handful of Massachusetts lawmakers are hoping to persuade their colleagues to support a proposal that would make the state the first to adopt a ban meant to eliminate the use of tobacco products over time. Other locations have weighed similar “generational tobacco bans.” The bans phase out the use of tobacco products based not just on a person's age but on birth year. Lawmakers plan to file the proposal next year. If approved, the bill would set a date and ban the sale of tobacco to anyone born after that date forever, eventually banning all sales. Vietnam approves $67 billion high-speed railway project between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh city HANOI, Vietnam (AP) — Vietnam has approved the construction of a high-speed railway connecting the capital Hanoi in the north with the financial capital of Ho Chi Minh in the south. It is expected to cost $67 billion and will stretch 1,541 kilometers (957 miles). The new train is expected to travel at speeds of up to 350 kph (217 mph), reducing the journey from the current 30 hours to just five hours. The decision was taken by Vietnam’s National Assembly on Saturday. Construction is expected to begin in 2027 and Vietnam hopes that the first trains will start operating by 2035. But the country has been beleaguered by delays to its previous infrastructure projects. Inflation rose to 2.3% in Europe. That won't stop the central bank from cutting interest rates FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — Inflation in the 20 countries that use the euro currency rose in November — but that likely won’t stop the European Central Bank from cutting interest rates as the prospect of new U.S. tariffs from the incoming Trump administration adds to the gloom over weak growth. The European Union’s harmonized index of consumer prices rose 2.3 percent, up from 2.0% in October, according to EU statistics agency Eurostat. However, worries about growth mean the Dec. 12 ECB meeting is not about whether to cut rates, but by how much. Market buzz says there could be a larger than usual half-point cut in the benchmark rate, currently 3.25%. Stock market today: S&P 500 and Dow post gains and close out best month of 2024 NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks closed with solid gains as Wall Street put the finishing touches on one of its best months of the year. The S&P 500 rose 0.6% while the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 188 points, or 0.4%. The Nasdaq added 0.8%. Friday was an abbreviated trading day, with stocks closing at 1 p.m. ET and the bond market an hour later. Investors were looking to see how much shoppers are willing to spend on gifts for the holidays. Black Friday unofficially kicked off the holiday shopping season, although retailers had been offering early deals for weeks. Macy’s and Best Buy each gained around 2%. From T-shirts to thongs, how indie film merchandise became a hot commodity LOS ANGELES (AP) — Merchandise is nothing new. But in recent years, movie-inspired streetwear has exploded in popularity among film buffs, thanks in part to viral marketing campaigns put on by independent film studios. Take the hourslong line for one-day-only “Anora” pop-up in Los Angeles, for instance. Clothes are promoted as trendy and in limited supply and are often made in collaboration with popular brands. The experience of watching movies has become a less collective one in recent years. For many fans, repping their favorite films in public is a way to combat that. Santa's annual train visit delivers hope and magic to one corner of coal country ON BOARD THE SANTA TRAIN (AP) — Since 1943, the people of Appalachian Kentucky, Virginia, and Tennessee have looked forward to Santa’s arrival. Not in a sleigh on their rooftops, but on a train. At each stop of the CSX Santa Train there are dozens to hundreds of people. Many crowd around the back, where Santa and his helpers toss stuffed animals. Meanwhile groups of volunteer “elves” fan out with gifts, making sure every child goes home with something. Many of the children who line the tracks on the Saturday before Thanksgiving, waiting for Santa, are the third, fourth or fifth generation to do so. Sandra Owens has been coming for 43 years and now brings her grandchildren. She says, “The faces of the kids, that’s what makes me happy. You can’t see anything better.”

Image of Trump, Putin on Economist cover is altered | Fact checkIt was neither Punjab nor Haryana — the two States caught in the political slugfest for burning stubble — but Madhya Pradesh that recorded the highest number of stubble burning incidents this year, according to data released by the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) on Saturday. In fact, the total number of farm fires dropped in Punjab and Haryana but rose in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh. Since 2020, this is the first time that M.P. has topped the list. Farmers set fire to paddy stubble to quickly clear the agricultural fields for sowing wheat as the window between harvesting paddy and sowing wheat — mid-October to mid-November — is short. Delays in the sowing of grain affect production. Stubble burning has been considered a major cause of pollution in Delhi and its adjoining regions during this period. “M.P., U.P. and Rajasthan have shown a significant increase in farm fires, and we are looking into the issue. But we are yet to find out a conclusive reason for this. The reasons why farmers burn stubble are different in these three States compared to Punjab and Haryana,” a Central government official said. Accuracy There have been multiple reports of farmers in Punjab and Haryana “burning stubble after around 4 p.m.” to escape the watch of satellites. Moreover, the IARI considers September 15 to November 30 as the complete harvest season. But it shifts beyond this period in some regions, as per officials. The Hindu had also reported last month that the paddy burnt area “increased in 2023 in Punjab and Haryana”, but the Commission for Air Quality Management in NCR and Adjoining Areas (CAQM) did not share this with the Supreme Court or put it in the public domain. Trying their hand a farming a group of three entrepreneur friends running petrol pumps have successfully harvested a kilo of the valued spice saffron from soilless farming at a climate-controlled facility at Dharamkot in their home district of Moga. They adopted the aeroponic method of farming, which is a method of growing plants without soil where roots are suspended in the air and irrigated with a nutrient-dense mist. Their venture has evoked curiosity among agriculture experts and the scientists from the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) in Moga have decided to record cultivation details of this unique experiment conducted in Punjab. Saffron is traditionally grown in the cold conditions of the Pampore and Lethpora regions of the Peer Panjal mountainous region in Kashmir. Experts say that entrepreneurs in different parts of the country are experimenting with growing saffron, and it involves ample capital investment to cultivate the spice in a specially built facility with low temperature. A leisure trip to Kashmir last year motivated the Moga residents to experiment with saffron cultivation in the high temperature of Punjab. Kshitij Goyal, who runs a petrol pump in the town, says the three invested nearly ₹ 30 lakh in the 550 square feet fully automated facility built at Dharamkot village to control temperature and brightness in the chamber through a mobile phone application. “A chance visit to saffron farms pushed us to give its farming a try at our place. After brainstorming sessions and contacting individuals engaged in saffron farming in Iran and the US, we raised a fully automated facility at Jasvir Singh’s farmland at Dharamkot village,” said Goyal, an engineering graduate. The seeds were procured from a farm dealer in Kashmir and were sown in August. According to another partner in the saffron venture Gurpreet Singh, a group of women farm labourers was engaged in plucking saffron strands. “The crop was harvested after three months; a tedious job which lasted 15 days. We have collected about a kilogram of saffron. Before commercial sale, we are working to secure a certification from Punjab authorities and our team is working on this front,” he added. Deputy director of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Amandeep Singh Brar said a team of farm scientists is expected to visit the farm to collect data. Brar said the natural climatic conditions of Punjab are not conducive for saffron cultivation, but modern technologies can be adopted for growing similar crops with due diligence. Brar said it is probably the first time that such an amount of saffron is cultivated in controlled climatic conditions in Punjab. “The initiative is interesting, but it involves huge capital. It is important to study if the saffron grown in Punjab has a quality at par with that cultivated in Kashmir. A detailed report will be sent to the higher authorities to decide on whether saffron farming can be recommended in Punjab or not,” added Brar.Poor mobile service coverage is leaving regional Australia behind. Ruud van Nistelrooy refused to get carried away with his debut victory as Leicester City manager, the Dutchman quick to point out “the fact” of West Ham’s dominance. Van Nistelrooy kicked off his reign with three points and three goals, moving City clear of the drop zone and ending a run of six games without victory. However, they had to ride their luck, with West Ham scoring just once from 31 attempts. The manager said: “I’m very happy. If you look at the result, and it’s about the results, it was a great night. Three points, three goals, and three good goals I think. I was very happy with that. “Overall, we all saw the game and how dominant West Ham were at certain stages and how much they created and the attempts they had. That was a fact. It’s something of course we have to look at and do better. “But it’s the third day working at the club, so it’s been very busy getting to know everyone, working together with the current staff. We have started working together and everybody was helping. “They were long days, but they were worth it. You’re focused on the moment. I’m going to get myself a little beer and reflect on the past few days.” While Van Nistelrooy saw plenty of the characteristics he wanted from his team, he admitted the defensive structure and pressing were not quite right, leading to West Ham’s chances. Three days is not long enough to work out those kinks. “Overall what I said before the game, what I expected of the players moving forward, was togetherness, hunger, energy, spirit, a team that is fighting for every inch. That’s a foundation to play the rest of the Premier League. “I saw that completely with every player who started and every player that came on. That’s the foundation. Without that, it will be impossible to get where we want. I’m very happy with that. “The defensive shape is important and getting pressure on opponents. The timing of the press is quite difficult and it needs time and co-ordination to get that right. “We did that a couple of times where we got dangerous on the break, when we won the duels and played forward. But many times we missed a moment to press and that’s why we got pushed back too far and let them in our box quite often.”Google is making significant changes to Google Photos that will replace the familiar Library with a new “Collections” menu when accessing the service via your browser . The change follows similar updates Google recently introduced to its corresponding mobile apps. A few other tools have also moved around in the Google Photos side panel, but don’t panic; all the functions are still there, just in different locations. If you’re familiar with using Google Photos on your mobile device, you should have no trouble adapting to the new browser interface as the changes align with the latest versions of Google’s Android and iOS apps. Here’s what’s new or removed: Google Photos Changes: Explore function removed First, the Explore function, with its confusing magnifying glass icon (it’s not a search function!), has been removed. Now, “People and pets,” “Places” and “Documents” can be found in their own sections of the main Google Photos menu rather than having to click Explore first to reveal them. Google Photos Changes: New Updates section — goodbye Sharing Google has now added an Updates section to the side menu. This mirrors the function available via the mobile apps, which serves as a place for notifications of recent activity such as comments and likes on your pictures, people joining your albums or sharing their albums with you. On your mobile device, these updates can be accessed by tapping the alarm bell icon near the top-right of the screen, which will show a red dot when new updates arrive. The new Updates section replaces the former Sharing menu option, which provided a similar function but with much less information and is no longer required. You can now see sharing activity from within the Updates section. Google Photos Changes: Library replaced with Collections The Library section has now been renamed to “Collections” and still contains many of the same subsections, including Favorites, Albums, Documents, Archive and your Locked Folder. The Collections section also adds People & Pets and Places (previously found under Explore), Videos (to quickly see only video content) and one of my personal favorites, “Recently added,” which shows you photos and videos in the order they were uploaded regardless of when you took them. Before this update, you had to access the search menu and manually type “Recently Added” to access this function. No one likes change for the sake of it, but these recent updates make it easier to access commonly used functions while bringing the Google Photos Web interface much closer to that of the mobile apps. The update is rolling out now on an account-by-account basis. I have the new interface on one of my accounts but not the other, so if you’re wondering why your Google Photos page looks different to someone else’s, this is why. If you don’t already have the new interface, you can expect it to update automatically soon. Follow @paul_monckton on Instagram.
