French President Emmanuel Macron has delayed his announcement of a new prime minister until Friday morning, his office confirmed on Thursday. The decision comes after Macron returned early from a trip to Poland, adding to the ongoing political drama in France. “The statement naming the new prime minister will be published tomorrow morning,” the Elysee presidential palace announced. Such delay just days after Mr Macron assured party leaders that this new prime minister would soon be announced, within a 48-hour timeframe no less, following his much-anticipated meetings with these party leaders earlier this week. On Tuesday, Macron committed to naming a new leader as Prime Minister Michel Barnier will be replaced after this week’s historic no-confidence vote. Macron’s guarantee for a quick decision responds to the political crisis brewing in France, especially after Barnier’s government collapsed last week. Political Context In Delay This week, the discussions were about how to move forward after the dramatic fall of Barnier’s government, a situation brought about by divisions within the French political landscape. The no-confidence vote, which led to Barnier’s ousting, was primarily driven by the far-right National Rally (RN) and the hard-left France Unbowed (LFI). These groups, who were key to Barnier’s removal, were notably excluded from the talks about the new prime minister. It is such a situation that Macron needs to be under pressure and get himself a broad coalition strong enough to survive any other vote of no confidence. Furthermore, he needs to approve next year’s budget so as not to face a third consecutive year of France’s economic and political turbulence. Macron has never taken more crucial decisions than this as there is no approved budget for 2025 so far. Search For New Prime Minister Compounding policy disagreements are the internal wrangling within Macron’s party and other political parties involving tensions and personal interests, while the search for a new prime minister becomes an obstacle. A primary bone of contention is the pension reform, which was undertaken in 2023 to bring the official retirement age up to 64 by President Macron. That is something the centrist and the right-wing consider fundamental in bringing the budget back to balance, whereas it appears to be oppressive to citizens from the working class from the left perspective. One more serious challenge Macron will have to face is the appointment question. The president’s alleged first choice, the veteran centrist Francois Bayrou, has stirred unease on both ends of the political spectrum. Bayrou is viewed by left-wing detractors as an icon of continuity for Macron’s policies, which have mostly been unpopular among the left. On the right, Bayrou is personally abhorred by former President Nicolas Sarkozy, who still wields a good deal of influence within the right-wing circles. Other Contenders For Job While Bayrou remains in the lead, other politicians are also in the race to become the prime minister. They include former Socialist interior minister and prime minister Bernard Cazeneuve, the current Defence Minister Sebastien Lecornu, a loyal Macron ally, and former Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian. Despite the clear favorites, it is very possible that Macron will surprise people with an outsider candidate, similar to when Michel Barnier was announced after a long search in September. At this point, the situation is still so fluid in the political sphere that a final decision cannot be made. Although authorities have witnesses, ample street footage and even DNA evidence , the nationwide manhunt for the gunman who fatally shot UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson is fraught with challenges for law enforcement as it stretches into its fourth day. Since the attack at 6:46 a.m. Wednesday, details have come more clearly into focus. The assailant arrived in New York City on a bus from Atlanta Nov. 24, stayed at an AYH Hostel on the Upper West Side and likely fled the city via the Port Authority bus station. The FBI has joined local police in the hunt, and a relatively clear photo of the suspect has been distributed so the public can do the same. Here are the breadcrumbs of evidence investigators are following. WHO WAS UNITEDHEALTHCARE CEO SHOOTING SUSPECT ON THE PHONE WITH MOMENTS BEFORE SHOOTING? A map shows the known locations of the suspected killer of Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare. (Fox News) 1. A backpack discarded in Central Park NYPD investigators found a backpack in Central Park West on Friday that they believe belonged to the suspect who killed Thompson. A law enforcement source told Fox News Digital it will be taken to a lab in Queens for forensic testing. Retired FBI agent Scott Duffey explained the backpack will undergo "trace evidence processing." REWARD MONEY FOR INFO ON UNITEDHEALTHCARE CEO'S KILLER NOW UP TO $60K BETWEEN FBI, NYPD A Peak Designs backpack found by the NYPD in a leaf pile in Central Park Friday, Dec. 6, 20204. The bag appears to match the description of the one worn by the gunman who killed United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson Wednesday morning. (Obtained by New York Post) "[It's] a process for hair, fibers [and] DNA," Duffey said Saturday. "If he holds his hand against the strap and tightens the buckle like most of us do, that is where DNA most likely can be found. And zippers." 2. A water bottle dropped at the scene After ambushing Thompson outside the Hilton Midtown at 57th Street and 6th Avenue, the gunman took off down an alleyway. Investigators are now testing a water bottle they believe he dropped there for DNA evidence. Still, Duffey said DNA will only be immediately useful if the killer has already been arrested within the United States and is in the national Combined DNA Index System (CODIS). "If CODIS is not a match, then that DNA means nothing until you have someone in custody [to compare it against]," Duffey said. UNITEDHEALTH CEO ASSASSIN LEFT MESSAGE BEHIND TO 'MAKE A STATEMENT' OR 'THROW OFF POLICE': DETECTIVES Surveillance footage released by the NYPD shows the alleged suspect wanted in the shooting death of UnitedHealth CEO Brian Thompson in Midtown Manhattan Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2024. (NYPD) A genealogical DNA profile could be set up to run against existing DNA profiles submitted to ancestry websites, but the time-consuming process could take too long to catch a killer at large. "If there's a genetic match, it's going to give you a family profile, but an investigator will [then] need drivers' licenses, photos, criminal backgrounds," Duffey said. A genealogical profile, Duffey said, likely won't come into play unless the other leads go cold. "But let's just say that the family match that comes up is in Atlanta. That could be a start because we believe the bus arrived from Atlanta," Duffey said. 3. A discarded cellphone A cellphone, believed to belong to the gunman, was also found in the alleyway he used to escape. Video has also emerged of the unidentified man with a cellphone to his ear less than 15 minutes before he opened fire. "If indeed he was on a phone call right then — his phone was live — you can [collect data from] the cell tower. You are going to need the search warrant for that, and it’s a ton of data," former NYPD inspector and Fox News contributor Paul Mauro previously told Fox News Digital . This undated photo provided by UnitedHealth Group shows UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. (AP Photo/UnitedHealth Group ) "You've got the video. You have a pretty good place and time. So, what that does [is] it places that phone inside a particular cell grid, and you look in the data around when the call appears to have been made. And you look at the phone calls that were made there, and, by process of elimination, you are going to get not only the phone number that was assigned to that phone. You are going to get who he called," Mauro added. "And now you got a real data point." But cracking into a cellphone can take anywhere from seconds to weeks, Duffey said. Some devices can be unlocked quickly using technology like Cellebrite, which plugs into a phone and "allows everything in that phone to be downloaded in a fantastic, readable, usable product," Duffey said. But in other cases, like when biometric security is difficult to bypass, law enforcement needs to contact the service provider, which lengthens the process. Duffey said certain companies are more receptive to law enforcement than others because some prioritize their reputation for security and the integrity of their security measures over investigations. 4. Shell casings with a message Three shell casings with the words "deny," "depose" and "delay," similar to a popular phrase within the health care industry — "delay, deny, defend" — were left behind at the scene. These casings could be scoured for DNA evidence, and the message left on them could point to a motive. An NYPD detective told Fox News Digital Thursday the words were "clearly intentionally left to make a statement." Bullets on the sidewalk outside the Hilton Hotel in midtown Manhattan where Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was fatally shot Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2024, in New York. (Stefan Jeremiah/AP) "This will help identify a motive and eventually the suspect," the detective said. Alternatively, former Washington, D.C., homicide detective Ted Williams told Fox News Digital the message could have been left behind to "throw investigators off." 5. A flirtatious exchange caught on camera A clear image of the suspect was captured at the AYH Hostel where he stayed Nov. 24-27. Although others in the hostel said the man wore his mask at all times, only pulling it aside to eat, he allegedly pulled it aside and smiled while chatting with a receptionist. Although facial recognition software has come a long way in the past two decades, Duffey said, the image is likely not clear enough to get a reasonably small pool of matches. "Still shots are easily distorted from what that person really looks like," Duffey, who used earlier versions of facial recognition a decade ago in bank robbery cases, told Fox News Digital. "There could be if there's the slightest bit of a distortion because that's not a good video shot." A screenshot from surveillance footage released by the NYPD shows a person of interest wanted in the shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Midtown Manhattan Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2024. (NYPD Crime Stoppers ) Duffey said there are certain "points" needed to match a photo to an existing driver's license or passport photo. He said that is why travelers can no longer smile in their passport photos. "If you took a high school yearbook photo and submitted it, no glasses on, no covering, I guarantee that will hit off if that person has a driver's license or a passport photo in a state that allows law enforcement to use facial recognition technology," he said. "Now you're taking a grainy photo. It's just not enough." However, he said, the image is likely good enough that a member of the public who recognizes the gunman could come forward. A screenshot from surveillance footage released by the NYPD shows a person of interest wanted in the shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Midtown Manhattan Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2024. (NYPD Crime Stoppers ) 6. Surveillance footage The NYPD has access to more than 18,000 security cameras through its Domain Awareness System. But combing through that footage — in addition to pulling additional surveillance from businesses on the killer's path — could be a Herculean task. "Digital video recovery teams [are] detectives that train, go out, collect all the surveillance video from doorbells, cameras, all the cameras by the city [to gather evidence] with whatever equipment they have. They're able to download it quickly, put it onto their forensic thumb drive, bring it back to a police department and have a quick and easy upload," Duffey said. (NYPD Crime Stoppers) CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP "That is tedious," he said. "I've been a part of that, [and] you have to dedicate a full team that's watching [footage] probably 24/7." Duffey said investigators are likely searching for footage of the assailant when he first arrived in the city about ten days before the shooting in case there is a clearer image of his face. RANGERS have humbled a few famous clubs from major football nations in continental competition in recent years despite their domestic travails. Few if any of the European results they have recorded in modern times, though, will have felt as sweet for their fans as this Battle of Britain draw with Spurs at Ibrox tonight. The Glasgow club ensured there was no triumphant return to Scotland for former Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou in their Europa League league phase match. The morale-boosting point against the Premier League giants – secured thanks to a second-half Hamza Igamane goal - will raise their confidence levels no end ahead of their Premier Sports Cup final meeting with their city rivals at Hampden on Sunday. A first win by a Scottish club over top flight English opponents in 18 years may have cruelly eluded them – but Rangers increased their chances of qualifying automatically for the knockout rounds of the competition all the same. Here are five talking points from a memorable night. Disappointing Spurs Postecoglou described the catalogue of injuries and suspensions which he has had to deal with this season as the worst he has experienced in his 25 coaching career at his pre-match press conference on Wednesday – and his team selection highlighted the problems he has had. He made no fewer than five changes to the side which lost 4-3 to Chelsea at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the Premier League on Sunday. Rodrigo Bentancur, the Uruguayan internationalist whose ban for using a racial slur only applies to domestic fixtures, came into the midfield and James Maddison and Timo Werner also got the nod as Pape Sarr, Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke dropped to the bench, But it was at the back, where first choice centre halves Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven were both missing, that Postecoglou’s plight was most obvious. Archie Gray and Radu Dragusin came in to the heart of his rearguard. Gray - the son of Andy, grandson of Frank and great-nephew of Eddie, a trio of former Scotland internationalists – might have cost Spurs a cool £40m during the summer. But the ex-Leeds United kid is still just 18 and is more of a central midfielder or a full-back. Spurs looked very much like a side which had won just one of their previous seven games. They by no means, despite having Son Heung-min, Werner and Maddison on the park, troubled their hosts. Quite the opposite in fact. It was clear to see why they have been toiling in the English top flight. They were lucky to avoid defeat. Rangers spirit Philippe Clement mixed things up for this match too. Danilo and Ianis Hagi, who have been two of his best performers in recent weeks, were unavailable as they were not included in the European squad. Leon Balogun and Connor Barron also dropped out as Ridvan Yilmaz, Robin Propper, Mohamed Diomande and Nadim Bajrami came in. Yilmaz, who had not started since the Champions League qualifier against Dynamo Kyiv at Hampden way back in August, somewhat unusually slotted in on the left wing as Jefte remained at left back. Bajrami, too, moved inside and performed the playmaker role. But the set-up worked well. The atmosphere inside the ground was electric as the two teams emerged from the tunnel – and when the visitors peeled away to the corner of the pitch and formed a Celtic-style huddle before kick-off the decibel levels got cranked up a notch or two. Fraser Forster, the former Celtic player who inflicted so much misery on Rangers during his various spells in Scotland, was booed by the home supporters every time he took a touch. But the 6ft 7in goalkeeper did not have a huge amount to do in the opening 45 minutes. He pushed a Bajrami attempt wide and dealt with two on target efforts from Vaclav Cerny. He would have been beaten if Bajrami or James Tavernier had been able to get on the end of a square ball which Jefte whipped across the six yard box. Fortunately for him, neither man could make contact. But he could do nothing to keep an Igamane shot out of his net after the Moroccan striker had been supplied by Tavernier early in the second half. Nobody could begrudge Rangers their lead. They had been the better side. Ange under pressure Postecoglou removed Werner and put on Kulusevski at the start of the second half. But if anything his men were worse after the change. They were fortunate to only concede once as their hosts laid siege to their goal. However, the substitute levelled with 15 minutes of regulation time remaining to ultimately salvage a draw for the visitors which their display scarcely merited. The Greek-Australian enjoyed more successes than failures against Rangers during his time in Scotland. But his expensively-assembled team were on the back foot for long periods this evening. The pressure is well and truly on him now. He had chants of “You’re getting sacked in the morning” aimed in his direction by the home supporters in the 48,064-strong crowd after Igamane struck. He will have to oversee a distinct upturn in form to avoid that fate in the weeks ahead. Souttar setback Rangers contained the Spurs front three pretty effectively in the opening half an hour and Jack Butland was never seriously tested in goal. But they suffered a serious blow when centre half John Souttar sank to the turf and then hobbled off injured after failing to respond to treatment. Balogun, the Nigerian internationalist who is no stranger to big European nights, came on and acquitted himself well. But if Souttar is out of the Premier Sports Cup final it will seriously reduce the defending champions’ chances of retaining their trophy. The Scotland internationalist has been immense for them this term. Euro progress With Manchester United away and Union St Gilloise to come in January, there is still a lot of football to be played before Rangers can clinch a place in the next stage of the competition. But if they perform as well as this in their next two outings then they will go through. Only a brilliant Forster save from a Cyriel Dessers shot with five minutes of regulation time denied them victory.Rocket Lab Successfully Deploys Satellite for Synspective, Caps Off Year with 60% Increase in Launches YoYJharkhand's New Council Sworn In Amidst Alliance Anticipation
WASHINGTON, Nov 22 (Reuters) - President-elect Donald Trump is expected to offer former U.S. Senator Kelly Loeffler the agriculture secretary job in his administration, CNN reported on Friday. Trump was due to meet with Loeffler on Friday afternoon at his Palm Beach, Florida, residence, CNN said. Reuters was not able to confirm the report. Trump chose Loeffler, a staunch supporter and donor, to co-chair his inaugural committee after he won the Nov. 5 U.S. presidential election . If confirmed, Loeffler would lead a 100,000-person agency with offices in every county in the country, whose remit includes farm and nutrition programs, forestry, home and farm lending, food safety, rural development, agricultural research, trade, and more. The nominee's agenda would carry implications for American diets and wallets, both urban and rural. Department of Agriculture officials and staff negotiate trade deals, guide dietary recommendations, inspect meat, fight wildfires, support rural broadband, and much more. Loeffler was appointed to the U.S. Senate seat from Georgia in 2019 to succeed former Senator Johnny Isakson, who retired. She lost it to Democrat Raphael Warnock in a special election in 2021. During her stint in the U.S. Senate, Loeffler served briefly on the Senate Agriculture Committee. The U.S. Senate Ethics Committee in 2020 cleared Senator Loeffler of wrongdoing in connection with stock trades, her office said, after the wealthy Republican was criticized over share sales during the coronavirus outbreak. Loeffler and her husband's net worth has been estimated at more than $500 million. If confirmed, Loeffler would advise the administration on how and whether to implement clean fuel tax credits for biofuels at a time when the sector is hoping to grow through the production of sustainable aviation fuel. The nominee would also guide next year's renegotiation of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade deal, in the shadow of disputes over Mexico's attempt to bar imports of genetically modified corn and Canada's dairy import quotas . Trump has said he again plans to institute sweeping tariffs that are likely to affect the farm sector. Loeffler, then a co-owner of the women's basketball team Atlanta Dream, came under fire in 2020 when she sent a letter to the WNBA commissioner objecting to the league's decision to campaign for racial justice and the "Black Lives Matter" movement. Loeffler faced months of activism from WNBA players who called for her removal from the ownership team. The team was sold in 2021. Sign up here. DOHA Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Egypt’s Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly discussed Saturday ways to enhance cooperation between the two countries. The two leaders met on the sidelines of the 22nd edition of the Doha Forum 2024, hosted by the Qatari capital on Saturday and Sunday, according to a statement by the Egyptian Cabinet. Both sides discussed “enhancing various aspects of cooperation and coordination between the two countries, and building on the qualitative shift that Egyptian-Qatari relations have witnessed recently across various political, economic, and investment fields.” Madbouly affirmed the continuation of consultations with Qatari government working teams to implement what was agreed upon during the Qatari Prime Minister’s Mohammed bin Abdulrahman visit to Egypt at the end of November. He also expressed his hope that the projects discussed with the Qatari side would be implemented “as soon as possible,” without providing further details. According to the Qatar News Agency, the Emir of Qatar received a verbal message from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi “pertaining to bilateral relations and ways to support and develop them,” conveyed by Madbouly. The two-day Doha Forum 2024 is being held in Doha with the theme "The Inevitability of Innovation." According to official estimates, over 4,500 participants from more than 150 countries are in attendance, including seven heads of state, seven prime ministers, and 15 foreign ministers. *Writing by Rania Abu ShamalaSeven & i weighs sale of York Holdings specialty storesHow to Watch Top 25 Women’s College Basketball Games – Saturday, November 23China's manufacturing sector posts faster expansion in November
Conor McGregor could see further commercial problems due to international backlashBUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — Botafogo overcame playing with 10 men to win its first Copa Libertadores title after beating fellow Brazilian side Atletico Mineiro 3-1 in the final at Monumental de Nunez Stadium on Saturday. After just 30 seconds, midfielder Gregore, one of Botafogo's best players, hit the head of Fausto Vera with his foot and was given a straight red card. Winger Luiz Henrique scored first in the 35th minute from close range, and was fouled for the penalty shot converted by Alex Telles in the 44th. Eduardo Vargas headed Mineiro's only goal in the 46th while Junior Santos, the top scorer in the Copa Libertadores with 10 goals, capped Botafogo's historic night with the third in injury time. Brazil was assured of a sixth consecutive Copa Libertadores title and its 24th in history, just one less than Argentina. It was also the third straight title for Rio de Janeiro clubs, after Fluminense in 2023 and Flamengo in 2022. Despite sensationally losing Gregore, Botafogo reset and Luiz Henrique scored the opener. Henrique surged on the right flank and crossed to Marlon Freitas, who took a shot that was deflected. Henrique was in the right place to strike through the legs of goalkeeper Ederson. Henrique and Ederson met again near the end of the first half when the striker surprised the keeper on the edge of the box. A penalty was given after a video review and left back Telles calmly slotted the ball. Mineiro came back with a more aggressive formation in the second half and was rewarded when veteran Hulk took a corner kick and Vargas, who replaced midfielder Gustavo Scarpa during the break, didn’t even need to jump to score with his head. Mineiro had more chances to equalize through Deyverson in the 53rd, Hulk in the 56th, and Vargas in the 86th and 88th, all from close range. But it was Botafogo’s Júnior Santos, who was sidelined by injury during the Copa, who scored the last goal. Botafogo coach Arthur Jorge joined Portuguese compatriots Jorge Jesus (Flamengo, 2019) and Abel Ferreira (Palmeiras, 2020 and 2021) as European coaches with a Copa Libertadores title. Mineiro's Gabriel Milito missed the chance to be the first Argentine to win the tournament with a Brazilian club. Botafogo also gave American owner John Textor his biggest trophy yet. Textor has been subject to criticism after unproven allegations about match-fixing when Botafogo squandered a 13-point lead last year and missed out on the league title. Next week, his team could win its first Brazilian title since 1995. Botafogo was relegated from the league in 2020 but has risen to prominence again with Textor’s investment. He was part of a wave of foreign owners who came into Brazilian soccer after a 2021 law change paved the way for private investors. Mineiro also has wealthy owner in Brazilian billionaire Rubens Menin, a construction mogul. AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccerARLINGTON, Texas — Kind of a weird week in the Big 12, yeah? One of the conference’s former flagship programs (Texas) is playing for the SEC championship in its first season away from the Big 12. One team it passed over (SMU) is ranked higher than any of its current members and will contend for an ACC championship. Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark publicly squabbled with the College Football Playoff committee and Group of Five competition on two separate occasions. Saturday’s conference championship game at AT&T Stadium yielded an announced attendance of 55,889, which, outside of the COVID-19-impacted 2020 season, was the lowest in the event’s 28-year history; last year’s, between Texas and Oklahoma State, drew a record 84,523 for what it’s worth. The secondary ticket market get-in price for the Big 12 championship game was as low as $16 on Saturday morning, according to Vivid Seats, and their cheapest SEC championship game tickets started at $110. And, yet, Arizona State gave the Big 12 a reason to cheer. The Sun Devils (11-2) throttled Iowa State, 45-19, to win the Big 12 championship in their first season as a member after the Pac-12 folded. Senior running back Cam Skattebo (208 total yards, 3 touchdowns) rumbled up and down the field, paced a blowout and helped give the Big 12 exactly what it needs: a team that looks like it might be worthy of a top-four playoff seed. “We’re 11-1 with our starting quarterbacking, having beat four ranked teams, having won the Big 12 championship,” head coach Kenny Dillingham said. “I think there should be a real chance we get a first-round bye, and I definitely think we should host a game.” Wouldn’t that be something? Yormark, before Saturday’s game, said that the conference is “building something special.” He talked up the conference’s “magical” November in which half the league remained in contention for a title game berth and a four-way tiebreaker (which also included BYU and Colorado) was called upon to decide Saturday’s matchup. Still, the Big 12 lacked a marquee contender this season. The kind that looks like a legitimate perennial postseason player. Like, say, a Texas or Oklahoma. The Longhorns and Sooners combined for five of the Big 12′s six playoff appearances under the original four-team format before they jumped to the SEC prior to this season. Texas will play for a top-four playoff seed on Saturday against Georgia in the SEC championship game. Oklahoma is, well, at least in better shape than their in-state rival Oklahoma State still in the Big 12. Internally, BYU had a chance to plant its flag this season but floundered late; Colorado has star power, a baseline of success but no serious postseason berth to show for it; TCU could’ve been in the driver’s seat after its CFP berth two years ago but is just 13-11 since. “I think, within time, you’re going to find that certain schools will distance themselves from others,” Yormark said. “I think that’s the evolution we’re going to go through. Parity and depth right now is what I’m selling, candidly, but moving forward I think it might be a little different.” Arizona State, in Year 1 of the new-look Big 12 and the expanded playoff, might’ve been the first to raise its hand. The Sun Devils were picked to finish dead last in the conference’s preseason poll but won five straight games to finish the regular season and force their way to JerryWorld. Dillingham, 34, is a rising star. Freshman quarterback Sam Leavitt (219 yards, 4 total touchdowns) is too. Skattebo — who surpassed 2,000 scrimmage yards on Saturday — is “the best player in the nation,” according to his quarterback. Their collective performance Saturday left no doubt that they belong in the CFP. It’s just a matter of whether they’ve done enough to convince the committee that they belong in that cushy top four where Yormark believes they do. The Sun Devils, ranked No. 15 in last Tuesday’s playoff poll, could certainly still be seeded No. 12 in Sunday’s final playoff bracket as the fifth highest-ranked conference champion. The four highest-ranked conference champions — who, according to the most recent rankings, are the winners of the SEC, Big Ten, ACC and Boise State of the Mountain West — will receive first-round byes. Boise State (No. 10) beat UNLV in the MWC championship game on Friday night to secure safe passage into the playoff. Yormark teed off on the selection committee on Wednesday and argued that no Group of Five team should be ranked higher than the Big 12 champion. He doubled down on Saturday, referenced his conference’s strength of schedule and claimed that there’s “no comparison” between the Big 12 and “any G5 conference champion.” The Sun Devils might have a chance to prove that a truth. If they remain the No. 12 seed and if Boise State remains the No. 4 seed, the two would be in line to meet in the quarterfinals if Arizona State wins its first-round game on the road. If their blowout win versus Iowa State sways the committee enough to move them above Boise State and into a top-four seed in Sunday’s final rankings, that same aforementioned quarterfinal Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty and Skattebo rank No. 1 and No. 2 in all-purpose yards per game this season. Jeanty is a Heisman Trophy candidate, though Yormark said Saturday that he doesn’t think “there’s any competition” for the award with Colorado two-way star Travis Hunter also a finalist. Yeah, if you hadn’t noticed, he’s not too fond of anything that has to do with the Group of Five right now. He’ll see which side of the argument the playoff committee falls on come Sunday. The Sun Devils, at least, made it interesting. “I do think we need to have a really thoughtful conversation [about] the selection committee and how the ranking is being done,” Yormark said. “Again, look at resumes. Look at data. The data doesn’t lie. So we’ll see where that goes.” ©2024 The Dallas Morning News. Visit dallasnews.com . Distributed by Tribune Content Agency, LLC.
What's better than receiving passive income? Enjoying it for decades. Generating long-term passive income is easier than you might think. Here are three stocks to buy now and hold forever for a lifetime of dividends. 1. AbbVie Let's start with some bona fide dividend royalty. AbbVie ( ABBV -0.08% ) is a Dividend King , with 52 consecutive years of dividend increases. We're not talking about skimpy dividend hikes. Since its spinoff from Abbott Labs in 2013, AbbVie has increased its dividend payout by 310%. The big drugmaker's forward dividend yield currently stands at nearly 3.6%. That's on the low end of AbbVie's dividend yield range in recent years. But there's a good reason for this: AbbVie stock has performed well. I expect AbbVie to continue delivering share price appreciation and growing dividends over the next decade and beyond. Although sales are sliding for the company's top-selling drug, Humira, due to a loss of patent exclusivity, AbbVie has a strong product lineup and pipeline that's stepping up to the plate. In particular, autoimmune disease drugs Rinvoq and Skyrizi should drive AbbVie's revenue growth over the next few years. However, the company has plenty of other rising stars, including migraine therapies Ubrelvy and Qulipta, leukemia drug Venclexta, and antipsychotic drug Vraylar. AbbVie's pipeline also holds tremendous potential, with over 90 programs in clinical development -- more than 50 of which are in mid-to-late-stage clinical testing. 2. Realty Income Realty Income ( O -0.74% ) isn't a Dividend King like AbbVie. However, the company, which ranks as the world's seventh-largest real estate investment trust (REIT) , has an impressive track record, with its dividend increasing for 30 years in a row. Investors seeking passive income should like Realty Income's forward dividend yield of 5.4%. They should also be pleased that the REIT pays its dividend monthly instead of quarterly. Realty Income even calls itself "The Monthly Dividend Company." The commercial real estate market can sometimes be volatile. The good news with Realty Income is that its portfolio is highly diversified, with over 1,550 clients representing 90 industries. Around 90% of the company's total rent roll is largely insulated from economic downturns and threats from e-commerce. While Realty Income's dividend is its main draw for investors, I think this REIT will be able to deliver solid growth, too. The company has additional opportunities in the U.S. in several areas, including consumer-centric medical facilities, data centers, freestanding retail, and industrial facilities. It has even greater growth prospects in Europe, especially in the U.K., with an estimated total addressable market of $8.5 trillion. 3. Verizon Communications Verizon Communications ( VZ -0.09% ) has been popular with income investors for years -- and for good reason. The telecommunications giant offers a juicy forward dividend yield of 6.07%. This high yield isn't the only plus for Verizon's dividend program. The company has increased its dividend for 18 consecutive years. Sure, Verizon operates in an intensely competitive industry. The company (along with its peers) continually face significant customer churn. These factors have contributed to Verizon's modest revenue growth in recent years. But the telecom leader is still able to generate strong free cash flow ($14.5 billion in the first three quarters of 2024). This resilience should give investors seeking passive income a warm-and-fuzzy feeling about Verizon's dividend. I think Verizon's growth could accelerate by the end of this decade or early in the next decade, though. Some industry experts predict that 6G will debut by 2030. The greater capacity, speed, and reliability of 6G wireless networks could pave the way for a surge in augmented reality and Internet of Things adoption. If so, the demand for Verizon's wireless services should increase significantly.
