The Prime Minister said the season was a time to remember the importance of “being there for one another”, including in “the more difficult times”. He also expressed hope for “peace, particularly in the Middle East as the birthplace of the Christmas story” amid spiralling conflict across the region. The message comes after a challenging first five months in office for the Labour Government and against the backdrop of a flatlining economy and rising inflation. Sir Keir said: “This Christmas, people will be travelling up and down the country. Heading home, visiting relatives and loved ones to celebrate together the hope and joy of this special season. “It’s a time to remind ourselves what’s really important. Family. Friendship. And fellowship between all people. “Being there for one another – in these celebrations, as well as the more difficult times.” To our military and veterans, the whole nation thanks you for the sacrifices you make to keep us safe. My government will serve you as you have served your country. I wish you and your families a very happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year. pic.twitter.com/LphMZog6np — Keir Starmer (@Keir_Starmer) December 22, 2024 The Prime Minister sought to strike an optimistic note following another year of political upheaval for Britain, which saw Labour win a landslide victory after a surprise election called by Rishi Sunak in the summer. After taking office in July, the new Government made a series of unpopular decisions as ministers confronted the realities of creaking public services and strained national finances. As well as dealing with the economic inheritance, Sir Keir said he needed to fix a “broken society” which manifested itself in summer riots across the country after the Southport knife attack. Sir Keir said: “This Christmas, I will be hoping for peace, particularly in the Middle East as the birthplace of the Christmas story. “I’ll be looking towards a better, brighter future for every person and celebrating the joy and wonder that Christmas brings. “So, from my family to yours, I hope you have a very merry Christmas.” The message comes after revised official figures released on Monday indicated that UK gross domestic product (GDP) showed no growth between July and September. Downing Street defended the Government’s record so far when asked about the data, telling reporters: “We had to take those tough decisions to lay the foundations of growth such that we can then deliver the higher living standards over this Parliament that people want to see.” The Prime Minister also used his message to thank those spending Christmas serving others, including in the NHS and emergency services, the armed forces, churches and charities. “I know that this is not an easy time for everyone, and my thoughts are with all those who are lonely this Christmas. “Having a tough time, missing a loved one. You are not alone,” he said. Meanwhile, Kemi Badenoch said Christmas was a time to reflect on “all that’s happened in the year” and “support all of those people who need our assistance”. “I want to take this opportunity to say thank you to everyone, not just in the Conservative Party or in my constituency, but across the country,” the Tory leader said. “For all that you have been doing in your communities, supporting each other and helping to keep all our towns, villages and places going. “I think that Christmas is a time for us to reflect on all that’s happened in the year. “Sometimes we have amazing years. “Sometimes, like when I lost my dad, we have difficult years and we’re commiserating, but we do it together. “But it’s a time for us to support all of those people who need our assistance, who need our help, who need our support.” She added: “And I’m looking forward to 2025. “I wish you all the very best for the New Year and all of the exciting things to come.” Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey said: “This year, I’ve had the chance to spend time with some amazing young carers. “Incredible young people who will spend this Christmas doing what they do all year round; looking after loved ones who are ill or disabled. “Carers embody the Christmas spirit of love, selflessness and generosity. “So I hope we can all take some time to think of them, and keep them in our hearts. “And wish them – and everyone – a Christmas full of peace, joy and love.”Spain Faces Threats of Terrorism and Unrest, US Warns in Travel AdvisoryClemson vs. SMU FREE LIVE STREAM (12/7/24) | How to watch, time, TV channel for ACC championship game
NEW YORK — They have seen him smiling on a hostel security camera, but don’t know his name. They found the backpack he discarded while fleeing, but don’t know where he went. As the search for UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson’s killer goes on, investigators are reckoning with a tantalizing dichotomy: They have troves of evidence, but the shooter remains an enigma. Police don’t know who he is, where he is, or why he did it — though they are confident that it was a targeted attack instead of a random act. “The net is getting tighter,” New York City Mayor Eric Adams said Saturday. Hours after he spoke, police divers were seen searching a pond in Central Park, where the killer fled after the shooting. Officers have been scouring the park for days for any possible clues. Get the latest breaking news as it happens. By clicking Sign up, you agree to our privacy policy . Retracing the gunman’s steps using surveillance video, police say, it appears he left the city by bus soon after the shooting Wednesday morning outside the New York Hilton Midtown. He was seen on video at an uptown bus station about 45 minutes later, NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said. With the high-profile search expanding across state lines, the FBI announced late Friday that it was offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction, adding to a reward of up to $10,000 that the NYPD offered. Police say they believe the suspect acted alone. This image provided by the New York City Police Department shows a man wanted for questioning in connection to the investigation of the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel, Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2024. Credit: AP/HOGP Police provided no new updates on the hunt Saturday, but investigators are urging patience, even with shooter on the loose. Hundreds of detectives are combing through video recordings and social media, vetting tips from the public and interviewing people who might have information, including Thompson’s family and coworkers and the shooter’s randomly assigned roommates at the Manhattan hostel where he stayed. “This isn’t ‘Blue Bloods.’ We’re not going to solve this in 60 minutes," Kenny told reporters Friday. “We’re painstakingly going through every bit of evidence that we can come across.” The shooter paid cash at the hostel, presented what police believe was a fake ID and is believed to have paid cash for taxi rides and other transactions. He didn't speak to others at the hostel and almost always kept his face covered with a mask, only lowering it while eating. But investigators caught a break when they came across security camera images of an unguarded moment in which he briefly showed his face soon after arriving in New York on Nov. 24. Communters wait for buses at the George Washington Bridge Bus Station in New York, Friday, Dec. 6, 2024, where the gunman fleeing Wednesday's shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson took a taxi to, according to surveillance video. Credit: AP/Richard Drew Police distributed the images to news outlets and on social media but so far haven't been able to ID him using facial recognition — possibly because of the angle of the images or limitations on the use of the technology, Kenny said. On Friday evening, investigators found a backpack in Central Park that had been worn by the gunman, police said. They didn’t immediately reveal what, if anything, it contained but said it would be tested and analyzed. Another potential clue, a fingerprint on an item he purchased at a Starbucks minutes before the shooting, has so far proven useless for identifying him, Kenny said. Aided by surveillance cameras on nearly every building and block, police have been able to retrace the shooter’s movements. They know he ambushed Thompson at 6:44 a.m. as the executive arrived at the Hilton for his company’s annual investor conference, using a 9 mm pistol that resembled the guns farmers use to put down animals without causing a loud noise. They know ammunition found near Thompson’s body bore the words “delay,” “deny” and “depose,” mimicking a phrase used by insurance industry critics. Kenny said the fact that the shooter knew UnitedHealthcare group was holding a conference at the hotel and what route Thompson might take to get there suggested that he could possibly be a disgruntled employee or client. Investigators know from surveillance video that the shooter fled into Central Park on a bicycle and ditched it around 7 a.m. near 85th Street. He then walked a couple blocks and got into a taxi, arriving at 7:30 a.m. at the George Washington Bridge Bus Station, which is near the northern tip of Manhattan and offers commuter service to New Jersey and Greyhound routes to Philadelphia, Boston and Washington. Investigators don't know what happened next. They are searching through more surveillance video but have yet to locate video of the shooter getting on a bus or exiting the station. “We have reason to believe that the person in question has left New York City,” Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch told CNN on Friday. Police have determined from video that the gunman initially arrived at the main bus terminal Manhattan on a Greyhound bus that originated in Atlanta, though it's not clear whether he embarked there or at one of about a half-dozen stops along the route. Immediately after that, he took a cab to the vicinity of the Hilton and was there for about a half hour, Kenny said. At around 11 p.m., he went by taxi to the HI New York City Hostel. It was there, while speaking with an employee in the lobby, that he briefly pulled down the mask and smiled, giving investigators the brief glimpse they are now relying on to identify and capture a killer.Stargardt Disease Therapeutics Market Size in the 7MM was ~USD 27 million in 2023, which is expected to increase by 2034, estimated DelveInsight 12-23-2024 11:22 PM CET | Health & Medicine Press release from: ABNewswire DelveInsight's "Stargardt Disease Market Insights, Epidemiology, and Market Forecast-2034 report offers an in-depth understanding of the Stargardt Disease, historical and forecasted epidemiology as well as the Stargardt Disease market trends in the United States, EU5 (Germany, Spain, Italy, France, and United Kingdom) and Japan. It functions by slowing the buildup of toxic waste products that contribute to retinal degeneration in various retinal conditions, including Stargardt disease. The mechanism of action involves the modulation of the visual cycle by inhibiting a critical enzyme in this pathway, Retinal pigment epithelium-specific 65 kDa protein (RPE65). By slowing the visual cycle, Emixustat reduces the availability of vitamin A derivatives (11-cis-and all-trans-retinal) to form precursors of A2E and related compounds. In animal models of Stargardt disease and retinal degeneration, Emixustat has demonstrated the ability to decrease the accumulation of A2E and protect the retina from light-induced damage. * MCO-010: Nanoscope Therapeutics Nanoscope's MCO-010 is an optogenetic gene therapy that utilizes a convenient and well-established intraocular injection to deliver a gene encoding the ambient light-sensitive MCO protein into retinal cells. Multi-Characteristic Opsin (MCO) re-sensitize the retina for detecting low light levels to restore vision in blind patients, specifically for the treatment of Stargardt disease, with the goal of improving visual function. Stargardt Disease Market Outlook Stargardt disease is a rare genetic eye disease that occurs when fatty material builds up on the macula, the small part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision. It is caused by a mutation in the ABCA4 gene (also caused by other genes in some instances), which prevents the production of a protein that cleans up the fatty material left over from vitamin A metabolism. As a result, the fatty material accumulates in yellowish clumps on the macula, eventually killing the light-sensitive cells and destroying central vision. Many new molecules with novel mechanisms, like emixustat, gildeuretinol, tinlarebant, avacincaptad pegol, among others, and gene therapies like MCO-010 and others, are being developed for the treatment of Stargardt disease by key players like Kubota Vision, Nanoscope Therapeutics, Alkeus Pharmaceuticals, Belite Bio, Astellas Pharma among others. Vice President Sara Duterte on late Sunday night, Nov. 24, called on Filipinos to demand accountability and “genuine public service” from the government. Vice President Sara Duterte (OVP photo) Speaking during a livestream on Facebook, wherein she also thanked her supporters for protecting Office of the Vice President (OVP) Undersecretary Zuleika Lopez, her chief-of-staff, and other OVP personnel, the official reminded the public of their right to gather and express themselves. “Gusto ko lang paalala sa ating mga kababayan na ayaw natin ng kaguluhan, na tayo ay may karapatan sa peaceful assembly at tayo ay may karapatan na magsalita kung ano ‘yung nararamdaman natin at gusto nating makita mula sa ating gobyerno (I’d just like to demand my fellowmen that we do not like violence, that we have a right to peaceful assembly and we have the right to express our misgivings and what we want to see from the government),” she said. “Kaya mga kababayan, paniguraduhin nyo na hinihingi ninyo sa gobyerno kung ano iyong karapat-dapat para sa ating lahat. Hindi lang karapat-dapat para sa mga pulitiko at mayayaman (That’s why to my fellowmen, make sure you are demanding what are rightfully ours from the government. Not only what’s right for the politicians and the rich),” Duterte added. The Vice President made this call after former presidential spokesperson and lawyer Harry Roque called on Filipinos to troop to Edsa as a show of force against the Marcos administration. Roque himself has been in hiding as he’s the subject of the House quad committee inquiry into his links to the alleged illegal activities of Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) in the country. Duterte, whose father called rallyists “communists” and shut down a television station and filed cases against an online news site, said that Filipinos’ right to peaceful assembly is enshrined under their rights to freedom of speech. “Ang gusto natin makita ay (We want to see) genuine public service,” she added. The official earlier held a pre-dawn Zoom press conference wherein she threatened to have the First Couple and House Speaker Martin Romualdez assassinated if she herself gets killed. This prompted some critics to hint at her mental instability. Some also said that she should seek professional help. But Duterte stressed that she is amenable to take a neuro psychiatric test and a drug test, provided that everyone in the Office of the President, OVP, the House of Representatives, Senate, and government agencies take the same tests in front of the public. “Wala na kayong mapuna sa akin. Pinagtatakpan ninyo ang mga kakulangan ng pamahalaan (You have nothing else to throw at me. You are covering up the shortcomings of the government),” she said. “Ako ang ginagawa ninyo punching bag para hindi napapansin, nakikita, naririnig, ng mga tao ang kalokohan, korapsyon, at ang katiwalian na ginagawa sa gobyerno (You are turning me into a punching bag to cover up what the people see and hear about corruption and anomalies happening in government),” she added. The Vice President has been staying at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center (VMMC) since Lopez, her aide, was brought there after falling ill and collapsing when the House good government committee ordered her transfer from the House detention facility to the Women’s Correctional Facility in Mandaluyong City. This was after Duterte camped at her brother’s office at the Batasang Pambansa complex to be close to Lopez, who was detained on Nov. 21 for “due interference” when she admitted to the House committee that she asked the Commission on Audit (COA) not to heed the panel’s subpoena for the OVP’s audit reports on its confidential funds use.
