By MARY CLARE JALONICK and MATT BROWN WASHINGTON (AP) — Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee to lead the Defense Department, said he had a “wonderful conversation” with Maine Sen. Susan Collins on Wednesday as he pushed to win enough votes for confirmation. He said he will not back down after allegations of excessive drinking and sexual misconduct. She said she had a “good, substantive” discussion with Hegseth and “covered a wide range of topics,” including sexual assault in the military, Ukraine and NATO. But she said she would wait until a hearing, and notably a background check, to make a decision. “I asked virtually every question under the sun,” Collins told reporters as she left her office after the meeting. “I pressed him both on his position on military issues as well as the allegations against him, so I don’t think there was anything that we did not cover.” The meeting with Collins was closely watched as she is seen as more likely than most of her Republican Senate colleagues to vote against some of Trump’s Cabinet picks. She and Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski, a fellow moderate Republican, did not shy from opposing Trump in his first term when they wanted to do so and sometimes supported President Joe Biden’s nominees for the judicial and executive branches. And Hegseth, an infantry combat veteran and former “Fox & Friends” weekend host, is working to gain as many votes as he can as some senators have expressed concerns about his personal history and lack of management experience. “I’m certainly not going to assume anything about where the senator stands,” Hegseth said as he left Collins’ office. “This is a process that we respect and appreciate. And we hope, in time, overall, when we get through that committee and to the floor that we can earn her support.” Hegseth met with Murkowski on Tuesday. He has also been meeting repeatedly with Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst, a military veteran who has said she is a survivor of sexual assault and has spent time in the Senate working on improving how attacks are reported and prosecuted within the ranks. On Monday, Ernst said after a meeting with him that he had committed to selecting a senior official to prioritize those goals. Republicans will have a 53-49 majority next year, meaning Trump cannot lose more than three votes on any of his nominees. It is so far unclear whether Hegseth will have enough support, but Trump has stepped up his pressure on senators in the last week. “Pete is a WINNER, and there is nothing that can be done to change that!!!” Trump posted on his social media platform last week.None

When it comes to Jerry Jones, you've got to take anything he says with a grain of salt. After all, the Dallas Cowboys owner recently described the team as a 365-day soap opera and to keep the drama going, he's got a knack for dropping the right quotes at the right time. You can argue about how good he is in the football business. But there's no denying what he's capable of when it comes to shaping narratives and getting people talking. And yet... like, come on, now. He's totally running it back with Mike McCarthy, isn't he? Just check out what he had to say about the Cowboys head coach on 105.3 The Fan. "I can't tell you how proud I am of the way the coaching staff, led by Mike McCarthy, the way that the leadership on this team, and really proud of these young players," Jones said on the radio. "They just are growing mentally and physically by leaps and bounds, makes me think we've got an outstanding future ahead of us." Makes me think we've got an outstanding future ahead of us, is the key part here. The quote literally makes no sense unless McCarthy gets a contract extension ahead of the 2025 NFL season. For a coach whose team was eliminated from playoff contention before the Cowboys even played in Week 16, Jones' comments sure will make McCarthy's Christmas Eve brighter. McCarthy and Jones were caught on camera in the locker room exchanging a hug, followed by some words from the Cowboys owner. Though the audio isn't available, the interaction is visibly positive. In the aftermath of the loss, Beijing's coaching staff and management will undoubtedly have to address the glaring issues exposed in the game, particularly regarding their center position. Whether it be through additional training, strategic adjustments, or personnel changes, it is clear that Beijing cannot afford to have such a liability in the center position if they hope to compete at a high level.
Formula 1 expands grid to add General Motors' Cadillac brand and new American team for 2026 seasonIn a chat with the media this week, Lakers guard Max Christie opened up on the morale of the team following their loss to the Magic on Thursday. Christie revealed that the Lakers were crushed after the loss but they have a chance to make amends tonight at home against the Denver Nuggets. “It’s a tough loss," said Christie via Dave McMenamin . "We were bummed out but we’re onto the next game. We got Denver tonight, who is still a good team. We don’t want to dwell on Orlando. So we turned the page and we’re ready to go tonight.” Experts were uncertain about the Lakers coming into this season, but they've surpassed all expectations in the first 15 games. At 10-5, they look to be a serious threat to the West but their last game against the Magic was far from their best showing. The Lakers had won six straight games going into the matchup, but they failed to keep the streak going. Instead, they let the Magic steal the win (119-118) thanks to a game-winning three-pointer in the closing seconds by Franz Wagner, who finished with 37 points, 11 assists, and 6 rebounds on 50% shooting. Missed free throws (17-26 from the line), second-chance points (15 offensive rebounds for the Magic), and streaky shooting from the role players were all to blame for the loss, which sent the Lakers down to 4th in the West standings. By all accounts, it was a very winnable game for the Lakers that they let slip due to crucial mistakes down the stretch . While it only counted as one loss for the Lakers, it could end up making a big difference in the West this year. Currently, there are 11 teams that are .500 or better which means that the margin for error is extremely slim. And for a Lakers team trying to find success in LeBron James ' final years, they don't have the time to waste on another meaningless season. They need to figure things out as soon as possible and pursue whatever path puts them in play for a championship run. With this current roster, the Lakers certainly have a solid chance to make some noise, but it's no secret that they are looking for some upgrades in the frontcourt . From Jonas Valanciunas and Walker Kessler to Robert Williams III , there are plenty of centers who could elevate the Lakersup to another level this season but it remains to be seen if they have the assets to secure a high-impact player. Whatever happens, nothing will rob the Lakers of their confidence, and they plan to put up a bitter fight until the very end. With LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and star rookie sharpshooter Dalton Knecht, they have more than a puncher's chance to make some kind of playoff run. Tonight, at Crypto.com arena, the Lakers will get another chance to prove themselves with a matchup against their former playoff rivals, the Denver Nuggets. They play tonight at 10:30 PM EST before a matchup against the Suns on Tuesday, November 26th, at Footprint Center at 10:00 PM EST. Finally, the Lakers will complete their back-to-back this week in Frost Bank Center for a matchup against Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs at 8:30 PM EST.
