A rich vocabulary is the gateway to self-expression, creativity, and a deeper understanding of the world. As parents, you have the power to help your child unlock this treasure chest of words. Building language skills might seem like a big task, but with a dash of creativity and patience, it can be a fun and rewarding journey. Here are ten exciting and engaging ways to expand your child’s vocabulary, turning learning into an adventure they’ll love. The foundation of vocabulary building starts with conversation. Engaging your child in frequent discussions introduces them to new words and helps them understand how language is used. Talk about what you’re doing—whether it’s cooking, driving, or folding laundry—and explain your actions. For example, instead of saying, “We’re going to the park,” you might say, “We’re heading to the park to explore the nature trails and enjoy the fresh air.” The added details give your child more context and new words to absorb. Encourage them to ask questions and express their thoughts. Conversations are two-way streets, so make sure they have a chance to talk too. Reading is one of the most effective ways to introduce children to new vocabulary. Books provide exposure to words that may not come up in everyday conversations. Choose a variety of genres—picture books, storybooks, poetry, and even non-fiction. Make reading interactive by asking questions about the story, pointing out interesting words, and discussing their meanings. For younger kids, picture books with vivid illustrations can help them associate words with visuals. For older children, chapter books with rich language can be a fantastic tool for learning new expressions and idioms. Learning through play is always a hit with kids. Games like Scrabble Junior, Boggle, or Pictionary are excellent for building vocabulary in a fun and relaxed way. Word games help children focus on spelling, word meanings, and even creativity. You can also make up simple games at home, like “I Spy” with descriptive words (“I spy something shiny and round”) or rhyming challenges where you take turns thinking of words that rhyme. Make vocabulary-building a daily habit by introducing a “Word of the Day.” Choose a word that’s age-appropriate and relevant to your child’s life or interests. Write it down, say it out loud, and use it in sentences throughout the day. For instance, if the word is “curious,” you might say, “You’re so curious about dinosaurs, aren’t you? Let’s learn more about them!” This repetition helps the word stick while showing them how it can be used in different contexts. Encourage your child to come up with their own sentences using the new word, which reinforces learning and boosts confidence. Kids have incredible imaginations, and storytelling is a fantastic way to tap into their creativity while building their vocabulary. Ask your child to make up stories about their favorite toys, animals, or characters. You can prompt them with questions like, “What happens if your teddy bear goes on an adventure?” Storytelling helps children practice sentence formation, understand the flow of language, and experiment with new words. You can also take turns telling stories, giving you a chance to introduce richer language while keeping it fun and engaging. For younger children, visual cues can make a big difference. Label common household items like “door,” “table,” “window,” and “refrigerator.” Seeing the words regularly helps them associate the objects with their names. You can also use this method to teach them about less common items. For example, label a “vase” or “mantelpiece” and explain what they are. This method is particularly effective for toddlers and early readers who benefit from connecting written words to tangible objects. Technology can be a wonderful supplement to traditional learning. There are many child-friendly apps and websites designed to teach vocabulary in an interactive way. Apps with games, flashcards, or storytelling features can make learning feel more like play. However, moderation is key. Balance screen time with other activities like reading, playing outside, or having face-to-face conversations. Make sure the content is age-appropriate and aligns with your child’s interests. Music and rhymes have a magical way of embedding words into a child’s memory. Songs, nursery rhymes, and poems often use repetition and rhythm, which make them easy to remember. Sing classic nursery rhymes like “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” or make up your own silly songs. Rhyming games can also help children recognize patterns in language, which is an essential skill for reading and spelling. For older kids, try introducing them to songs with meaningful lyrics or fun tongue twisters that challenge their pronunciation and vocabulary skills. Every new experience is an opportunity to learn new words. Take your child to museums, zoos, parks, or even a different part of town. Talk about what you see and hear, introducing new words in the process. For example, at a zoo, you might say, “Look at the giraffe it has such a long neck to help it reach leaves on tall trees.” These real-life connections make the words more meaningful and easier to remember. Even everyday errands like grocery shopping can become learning moments. Talk about the fruits and vegetables, describe their colors and textures, and let your child name them. Building vocabulary takes time, and it’s important to celebrate your child’s progress. When they use a new word correctly, praise them and show your excitement. Positive reinforcement builds confidence and motivates them to keep learning. You can also create a reward system for milestones, like mastering five new words in a week. The reward doesn’t have to be extravagant—a sticker, an extra bedtime story, or even a high-five can go a long way. Remember, every child learns at their own pace, so be patient and consistent. The journey of language development is as much about bonding and discovery as it is about learning new words. Celebrate the little victories and watch as your child grows into a confident communicator with a love for words. Let the journey begin—one word at a time!Satellite Phones: Are They Worth It in 2025?

A_1,242 (3,600).OTTAWA—Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and a handful of his top advisers flew to Florida to dine with president-elect Donald Trump and members of his team Friday night. On the menu: meat loaf and a range of meaty matters, including some of the most contentious Canada-U.S. issues that have gone unresolved for years. At the end of the surprise summit, there was no indication that Trump would drop his threat to impose a massive 25-per cent surcharge on Canadian products, announced by Trump on social media Monday — a threat that, if executed, would have a devastating impact on Canadian energy, auto and manufacturing exports. Still, the meeting between Trump, Trudeau and several of the future president’s advisers and their wives lasted more than three hours, and was described by a senior Canadian official as a positive, wide-ranging discussion. Trudeau, accompanied by Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc, and chief of staff Katie Telford, travelled to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in West Palm Beach on a weekend in which many Americans celebrate Thanksgiving. At the dinner table were key Trump officials and others, including North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, nominated for Interior Secretary who will lead Trump’s effort to open federal lands to more oil and gas drilling, and Commerce Secretary nominee Howard Lutnick, a staunch enthusiast of tariffs, and Trump’s nominee for national security adviser Mike Waltz. Other guests included Pennsylvania senator-elect Dave McCormick and his wife, Dina Powell, a former Trump deputy national security adviser. The face-to-face meeting came at Trudeau’s suggestion, said the Canadian source with knowledge of their communications. They discussed trade, border security, fentanyl, defence matters including NATO, Ukraine, and icebreakers (Canada, the U.S. and Finland recently agreed to a trilateral pact to rebuild their icebreaking fleets). The leaders and their teams also discussed China, energy issues and pipelines, including those that feed Canadian oil and gas into the U.S. like Keystone XL, Line 5, as well as the Trans-Mountain project and Canada’s liquid natural gas export capacity, the official said, speaking on a background-only basis to disclose some details of the private meeting. The two leaders also discussed next year’s G7 meeting that Trudeau will host in Kananaskis, Alta. It will be held seven years after Trump left the 2018 G7 at Charlevoix, Que., only to erupt in anger later after Trudeau said Canada would stand up and fight American steel and aluminum tariffs. That outburst led many to believe Trump retained a dislike of Trudeau, however the two leaders managed a working relationship after that and have had friendly conversations since Trump’s re-election, according to two Canadian sources. Friday night’s summit, undisclosed to media in advance, was seen as a chance to kick-start the relationship anew, and to connect with some of Trump’s advisers who will be players in his second term. The menu included a dish called “Mary Trump’s Meat Loaf,” as well as a fava bean falafel appetizer, pan seared trout with braised baby artichokes or a kimchi fried rice Asian bowl as a vegan option, said officials. The presence of LeBlanc, the minister responsible for border security, was aimed at countering Trump’s claim in his online statement that “thousands of people are pouring through Mexico and Canada, bringing Crime and Drugs at levels never seen before.” He said if Canada and Mexico didn’t act, he would exact a “very big price” on their economies. LeBlanc has said that the Trudeau government is prepared to beef up border security, with more money for technology, drones and more Mounties and border guards on the 49th parallel. LeBlanc, who ordered the Mary Trump meat loaf dish Friday, is also a hail-fellow-well-met political actor who is trusted by Trudeau, and gets along well with his ideological opposites, like Ontario Premier Doug Ford. It is the first meeting between the president-elect and a foreign leader, and comes just under two months before Trump is to be inaugurated as U.S. president. It also came just days after Trump threatened to impose the massive 25-per-cent tariffs on America’s three biggest trading partners, Canada, Mexico and China, with an additional 10 per cent slapped on China (possibly on top of an earlier vow to impose 60 per cent tariffs on China). Canada’s ambassador to Washington Kirsten Hillman and Trudeau’s deputy chief of staff Brian Clow were also at the Mar-a-Lago dinner, having travelled ahead to Florida to accompany the Canadian delegation. Earlier Friday, without tipping his hand, Trudeau said in Prince Edward Island that what is “important to understand is that Donald Trump, when he makes statements like that, he plans on carrying them out. There’s no question about it. “Our responsibility is to point out that in this way, he would actually not just be harming Canadians, who work so well with the United States, he would actually be raising prices for American citizens as well, and hurting American industry and businesses.” Trudeau added, “ultimately, it is through lots of constructive, real conversations with President Trump that I’m going to have that will keep us moving forward on the right track for all Canadians.” The Friday evening Mar-a-Lago high-stakes meeting occurred out of the public eye. Canadian media were not aware of Trudeau’s surprise trip until flight trackers alerted the departure of the prime minister’s plane headed south to Florida. That is in stark contrast to Trump and Trudeau’s first meeting at the White House in February 2017, which was a major bilateral summit shortly after Trump took power for his first term, at which border security was also front and centre. The relationship between the two leaders has been the subject of speculation since Trump’s re-election, and since his statement on Truth Social prompted an emergency first ministers’ meeting . “I’m surprised and impressed,” said Flavio Volpe, head of Canada’s Automotive Parts Manufacturers’ Association, that the Canadian leader was meeting with the president-elect, adding that kind of personal facetime with the former and future president is invaluable for Trudeau, and for Canada in the months ahead. “The PM is demonstrating the humility that’s required (by) going to the source. Also the prime minister is demonstrating to the contrary of all the predictions (the idea) that Donald Trump wouldn’t want to work with him is untrue.” Volpe said “nothing final” may come of the meeting, however he said the federal government may get a sense of what the next steps could be.
The new Airbus H145m aircraft will replace and expand the Air Corps ’ small fleet of light utility helicopters. The services’s two existing EC135 helicopters are approaching the end of their service life and are due to be scrapped in 2027. The Air Corps will take delivery of the new aircraft from Airbus sometime early in 2027 in a deal worth €91.7 million plus VAT. The primary role of the four new helicopters will be training new pilots before they move on to larger aircraft or flying helicopters for the Garda Air Support Unit. [ Army pulls out of Portlaoise Prison after 51 years in wake of IRA clear-out Opens in new window ] However, the H145s will also be capable of “intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and light combat capabilities”, the Department of Defence said. They will be capable of supporting Army, naval and Air Corps operations and will be particularly useful for transporting and inserting personnel from the Army Ranger Wing, the Defence Forces elite special forces unit. They will also come fitted with advanced surveillance technology, including electro-optical and thermal-imagery features not available on the existing helicopters. The Airbus deal is part of a planned expansion of Air Corps capabilities as laid out in a report from the Commission on the Defence Forces. Eventually, the organisation will also be renamed the Air Force. [ Officer dismissed from Defence Forces for attempting to interfere with candidate’s application for Army career Opens in new window ] The Government has already announced plans for the purchase of a new Air Corps-operated government jet, with twice the range of the existing ageing model, and a long-range, military-transport aircraft capable of evacuating Irish citizens from trouble spots. There are also plans for the acquisition of larger helicopters, known as super medium helicopters, to replace the Air Corps fleet of six AgustaWestland AW139 aircraft. A military primary radar system to detect maritime and airborne threats is also being planned while work will begin soon on upgrading the airside infrastructure of the Air Corps headquarters at Casement Aerodrome in Baldonnell, Dublin. [ Irish naval ships may have to deploy unarmed as weapons unit down to single technician Opens in new window ] A major challenge for the Defence Forces will be finding enough pilots and technicians to fly and service its new aircraft. Like the rest of the military, the Air Corps’ abilities to carry out missions has been significantly hampered by an exodus of trained personnel to the private sector in recent years. The Air Corps currently has 677 personnel, well below its establishment strength of 886. “The procurement of the Airbus H145M helicopter platform is another important step on the journey of transformative change of our Defence Forces,” said Defence Forces’ Chief of Staff, Lieut Gen Seán Clancy. “These new light multirole helicopters, proven in their service in other militaries, will not only enhance the Irish Air Corps’ rotary capability but will also serve as a critical enabler to the Army, Naval Service and Special Operations Forces.” Air Corps chief Brig Gen Rory O’Connor said the new helicopters “mark a significant milestone” for the organisation. “These helicopters will also play an important role in shaping the next generation of rotary-wing pilots, ensuring the Irish Air Corps remains agile, adaptable, and mission-ready for years to come.” Conor Gallagher is Crime and Security Correspondent of The Irish TimesJimmy Carter: A brief bio

(With inputs from agencies.)Washington [USA], December 21 (ANI): The first trailer for the latest season of Investigation Discovery’s ‘The Curious Case of...’ series was released on Friday. The new season takes a closer look at the conservatorship involving former Jackass star Brandon “Bam” Margera as he battled substance abuse and addiction, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. The premiere episode, which is set to air on January 13 on Max, looks into Margera’s journey toward sobriety, which included a controversial conservatorship. The trailer shows a legal tug-of-war between BJ Corville, a lawyer investigating Margera’s case, and Lima Jeramovic, a tech entrepreneur using VR technology in his addiction treatment. In the trailer, Margera compares his situation to Britney Spears, saying, “I’m the Britney Spears of Jackass,” referring to the pop star’s highly publicized conservatorship battle that ended in 2021 after 14 years. The conservatorship handed over decision-making powers to others while he sought treatment. Margera, once a core member of the Jackass crew, was let go from Jackass 4 in 2021 after failing a drug test. He later filed a lawsuit claiming his termination was illegal discrimination due to his physical and mental health challenges. As per The Hollywood Reporter, the episode features interviews with Lima Jeramovic, BJ Corville, Margera’s family, and his former Jackass co-star, Steve-O.
