(my game is) there. I’m happy with what we’re achieving, at the moment, as a team. We win as a team, we lose as a team; that’s the most important thing in this locker room. It’s not a one-man show. It’s all about us, it’s all about we.” Advertisement 2 Story continues below This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. At times, it’s been fair to wonder whether Ullmark is the same guy who, two seasons ago, was the NHL’s best goalie — in a vote, he was named the winner of the Vezina Trophy. That season, in a timeshare with Jeremy Swayman with the Boston Bruins, Ullmark was 40-6-1 with a terrific league-best 1.89 goals-against average and .938 save percentage. He allowed two or fewer goals in 36 games. Full credit to the Bruins’ play in front of him, but no question Ullmark was superb. A shot by Steven Stamkos of the Nashville Predators is stopped by Linus Ullmark of the Ottawa Senators during the first period at the Canadian Tire Centre on Dec. 7, 2024. Ullmark had three wins and an overtime loss in his past four starts heading into a game against the New York Islanders on Sunday. Photo by Troy Parla / Getty Images Fast forward two seasons and after a late June trade to the Senators, Ullmark agreed to a four-year contract extension worth an average of $8.25 million. So, it’s fair for the Senators and their fan base to have big expectations. For the first quarter of the season, Ullmark had some good games, made some good saves. But it was nothing special. Nothing exceptional. Not the kind of save-making that wins games when you have no business winning them. Maybe it’s the weaker competition or maybe something has clicked, but Ullmark has looked especially sharp recently. He looks more comfortable, relaxed. In his past four starts, he has three wins and an overtime defeat. In his past two games heading into Sunday’s match against the New York Islanders, he’d allowed one goal each time. His save percentages have been .974, .950, .912 and .923. Now, that’s stepping up, that’s what the team needs to push ahead in the standings. “ We had a lot of discussions during the last homestand,” Ullmark said. “I wasn’t really happy with my approach to the games. We dissected the whole thing. With (goalie coach Justin Peters) and the coaches, we found an idea that’s really worked out. There were some other things we talked about that have helped me. Article content “Like I said early in the year, you’re never as good as you think you are and you’re not as bad as you think you are.” Adam Gaudette of the Ottawa Senators and Radko Gudas of the Anaheim Ducks vie for the puck during a game on Dec. 1, 2024. Gaudette is the club’s second-leading goal scorer despite not getting a lot of ice time. Photo by Ryan Sirius Sun / Getty Images FOR THE LOVE OF GAUD: The Senators have moved Adam Gaudette up and down the lineup. And all he does is produce. The team’s second-leading goal scorer (with 12) heading into Sunday’s game, Gaudette, for whatever reason, doesn’t play as much as you think he should. He’s been an effective fourth-line centre playing, putting the puck into the net while playing minimal minutes and he’s been a winger on both the first and second lines. Gaudette had an assist Saturday, playing on a line with Tim Stutzle and Claude Giroux. He still only played 9:31, surprisingly low considering how much he’s shown he’s a natural goal scorer. More ice time should lead to more goals? Scoring goals is a good thing, right? “We’ve played him in the top six,” Senators coach Travis Green said. “Sometimes it depends on who you’re playing against, as well as the matchups. He’s having a good season, I’m happy with this play. I’m not worried about whether he’s playing top six or bottom six, I’m worried about the team. I’m trying to put together the best combinations to help us.” Advertisement 4 Story continues below This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Recently, he’s seen time on the fourth line. Photo by Minas Panagiotakis / Getty Images RIDLY FINDING HIS WAY: One of the Senators who has fallen short of expectations is centre Ridly Greig. With the Senators shuffling their lines to try and find the right mix, the 22-year-old, a first-round draft pick in 2020, was shifted to the wing. He’s moved up and down the lineup, but most recently was employed on the team’s fourth line. Going into Sunday’s game, Greig had two goals and five assists after putting up 13 goals and 13 assists a year ago. Asked about the move to the wing, Greig said: “I’ve played centre my whole life, so I’m more uncomfortable there. It’s coming. I’ve gotten a lot better. Hopefully, I can get it going.” “Ridly’s game is continuing to grow,” Green said. “He’s still a young player who is finding his way. We’re looking for a guy to play in that top-six role. We tried Rids there. “He’s young and there are lots of things in his game that are going to be better in two months, six months, two years. He’s just scratching the surface of what he can be in the NHL. There’s lots I like, but he still has a lot in this game.” While Greig took on the role of a “pest” a year ago, getting under opponents’ skin — we remember the empty-net slap shot that sent the Maple Leafs into a tizzy — that side of him hasn’t been as obvious so far this season. “He has a very competitive nature to his game,” Green said. “Do I want to see more? Yes and no. I don’t want (him) to take the penalties, but the competitive part of his game is a big, big part of what he is. We don’t want to take that away.” Recommended from Editorial TAKEAWAYS: Ottawa Senators knock off NHL's second-worst team, Nashville ONE-ON-ONE: Alfie ready to play key role for Team Sweden at 4 Nations Face-Off Article content Share this article in your social network Share this Story : Ottawa Senators goalie Linus Ullmark coming up big, why is Adam Gaudette not playing more? Districts around California are pursuing the idea of building rent-restricted housing to help hire and retain employees amid a worsening housing crisis.
Some media organisations are choosing to leave Musk’s divisive platform – but is migrating to alternatives, like Bluesky, really a solution? Recent decisions by major news outlets like The Guardian and La Vanguardia and more niche publications such as Sex Tech Guide to leave X put under the spotlight a new dilemma experienced by global media: Should they stay on a popular platform that has become a primary source of fake news and hate speech to maintain relevance, or should they leave to uphold ethical responsibilities? Once the go-to place for any and all global discourse, X (formerly Twitter) has seen its reputation turn to rubbish under South African multibillionaire and self-declared free-speech absolutist Elon Musk. The ethical decline of X has gained momentum in the run-up to the 2024 US presidential election, as Musk made his political alignment with Donald Trump and his Make America Great Again movement clear, turning the platform into a megaphone for hate, racism and xenophobia. As neo-Nazi, white-nationalist accounts started to gain prominence, and racist pile-ons, doxxing and other abuse became a daily occurrence on the platform, several media outlets – but also millions of everyday users – made the decision to leave X for good. For them, leaving X clearly represented a moral stand against racism and hate, and the misappropriation of a platform that was once accepted widely as the global public square. But is media organisations migrating to alternatives, like Bluesky, a genuine solution, or does it risk creating new problems, such as ideological bubbles, financial losses, and diminished influence? For many, remaining on X feels like tacit approval of the direction the platform took under Musk. For some news outlets, especially those whose corporate identity of progressive values take pride in their journalistic ethics, perceived association with the controversy-ridden platform of a far-right Trump surrogate is obviously unacceptable. However, X’s vast audience – still unrivalled by any other similar social media platform – remains an undeniable asset. The platform’s global reach and its ability to amplify messages cannot be ignored. Leaving it entirely may mean severing ties with a massive, global audience still relying on the platform for news, potentially leaving a vacuum that would be happily filled by less credible voices – or outright fake news machines. For those outlets fleeing X, Bluesky has emerged as an attractive alternative . A decentralised platform, it offers an environment where hate speech and misinformation are less prevalent. Its structure promises healthier, more values-aligned discourse. The point of Bluesky is not that it is free of disinformation, hate speech and fake news, but that its operation naturally reduces the reach of such content instead of promoting it – and that it offers additional tools to users to better control the information and content they consume. But Bluesky is not without flaws. Its user base is much smaller and its geographical reach much more moderate than X. Meanwhile, its design, critics say, risks creating ideological echo chambers: If Bluesky becomes a refuge primarily for liberal-leaning users and journalists, it could perpetuate the same insular dynamics critics say plague other alternative platforms. The argument, however, falls apart when one considers the alternative X offers to Bluesky’s supposed ideological bubbles: social media that is open to all ideologies, but is driven by hate. As journalist and professor Marcelo Soares wrote , X “is not a public square, it’s a shopping centre. There are no debates in a shopping centre.” Unlike X, which thrives on conflict to drive engagement, Bluesky lets users take control of their experience, and select what goes on their own feeds without algorithmic manipulation. If someone chooses a bubble, it’s a personal choice, not a structural imposition. Meanwhile, X’s so-called alternative to bubbles replaces connection with hostility, turning the platform into a battlefield rather than a space for dialogue. There are other arguments against a collective move by media from X to Bluesky. As journalist Sophia Smith Galer observed on LinkedIn , Bluesky is a platform designed to cater to journalists rather than their audiences. It recalls an earlier era when journalists dominated Twitter’s ecosystem, engaging primarily with one another. This dynamic, while comfortable for those in the media, might not translate to meaningful audience engagement in a world where users are moving towards video-driven platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram. So opening up an account on Bluesky, where they could interact with like-minded colleagues directly, without facing much abuse from neo-Nazis and conspiracy theorists, would undoubtedly be a positive for journalists. Yet, does it offer a clear alternative to X for the organisations that want and need to share their content with wider and ever more diverse audiences? X, tragically, remains the only platform where media outlets can reach a vast – if not the best-behaved and receptive – global audience. Leaving X also has practical, monetary implications for media organisations. Musk’s platform is still a major advertising revenue generator. X’s vast reach and user base make it a critical platform for driving traffic to news sites and attracting advertisers. Abandoning it risks shrinking audience engagement, which could affect revenue streams. Bluesky, Threads, and other alternative platforms are still in their infancy. Their smaller audiences and limited advertising opportunities make them less viable for organisations that rely on scale to sustain their operations. Media outlets must navigate this trade-off carefully: prioritising ethics while finding ways to maintain financial viability. Luckily for ethically concerned but cash-poor media outlets – and the entire humanity – Musk’s behaviour on X, and on the global political stage, is driving a lot of people away from X. Many of these people are finding refuge on Bluesky, meaning one day this new platform may actually become as profitable and useful as X for media organisations. Once the migration out of X is complete, and everyone who has an objection to the passing of disinformation, propaganda and hate as “news” has left the platform, serious media organisations would have no reason to remain there either. The exodus from X represents more than just a shift in social media strategy — it’s a reflection of the broader challenges facing journalism in the digital age. As media outlets grapple with the ethical implications of staying on problematic platforms, they must also contend with changing audience behaviours, financial pressures, and the rise of content-driven ecosystems. While platforms like Bluesky offer a glimmer of hope, they are not the solution for all of the many issues journalism faces today. The path forward requires a delicate balance: embracing innovation without sacrificing the core values of journalism; and adhering to less-toxic social networks, but without abandoning the public. Stakeholders and experts in international higher education have stated that global education and international collaboration are vital to Africa’s sustainable development and future for work. The stakeholders made this known on Wednesday in Lagos during the three-day maiden edition of The International Education (TINE) Africa Changemakers Conference with the theme: ‘Global education, sustainable development and the future of work for Africans’. The director of Laprinxo Consult and conference convener, Prince Louis Adekola, stated that TINE Africa, founded last year, is a platform for people and organisations working in the international higher education sector. Adekola said the conference is designed to bring visionary leaders, young innovators, entrepreneurs, professionals, and students to proffer relevant and sustainable solutions to Africa’s pressing challenges. He further said the conference seeks to address what Africans want from global education, how international education institutions can support African students in the diaspora, and how global education can impact sustainable development in Africa. “Focused on fostering intellectual dialogue, collaboration, and knowledge sharing, the conference highlights key areas such as sustainable development, technology, education, climate action, and economic empowerment. “It aims to inspire changemakers with the tools to drive social impact and transformation in their communities,” he said. According to Adekola, the second day of the conference (Thursday) is mostly for industry stakeholders and organisations in the local and international higher education sector to collaborate and share ideas on bridging the gaps in serving and supporting people who need their service. He added that the last day (Friday) is the award event for honouring people who work in the global higher education sector in Nigeria and globally. Debola Deji-Kurunmi, founder of Immerse Coaching Company, focused her keynote speech titled ‘Preparing and thriving as an African in the global job market’ on actionable strategies for leveraging Africa’s rich diversity, resilience, and innovation to succeed locally and internationally. Her speech stressed the importance of education and skills development, highlighting the need to combine formal education with industry-relevant digital and soft skills. On the other hand, she addressed the challenges and barriers that hinder Africans from leveraging global opportunities, such as international scholarships, diaspora networks, and mentorships. Deji-Kurunmi stated that with the growing population of Nigerian and African youth, they are positioned to excel in the global job market. She emphasised that in this decade of dynamism, talent is bankable. She added that raw talent ─ well packaged, either meeting a need or activating a sense of desire or happiness ─ is rewarded significantly with financial and non-financial currencies. Concluding her speech, she said, “Education will show you the system with which you can channel your gifts, ideas, and energy. And the power of international education makes a difference.” The first panel session ‘Between the SDGs and Agenda 2063: African youths as catalysts for transformational development’ had executive director, YouthxYouth, Erioluwa Adeyinka; founder, Oak and Teak Foundation, Morenike Molehin; and country director, Enactus Nigeria, Michael Ajayi, as panellists, and moderated by actor and filmmaker, Imoh Eboh. The second panel ‘Leveraging international education in preparing Africans for the fourth Industrial Revolution’ had founder and CEO, Edward Consulting, Bimpe Femi-Oyewo; and Chevening programme and communications officer, Boma Amieyeofori as panellists, and was moderated by the regional manager, Colorado State University, Opeyemi Adetola. The last panel ‘Building a sustainable Africa through climate education, strategic action, and collaboration efforts’ had founder, Durian Nigeria, Tony Joy; founder, Ecotutu, Babajide Oluwase; and TINE Africa convener, Louis Adekola as panellists, and was moderated by communications officer, TINE Africa, Diwura Williams. The TINE Awards ─ given to outstanding individuals, universities, and education consulting firms ─ were in the following categories: Best Agency of the Year Award (West and Central Africa), Best Agency of the Year Award (East and Southern Africa), Agent Aggregator of the Year Award, Digitally Excellent Agency Award, Most Ingenious Agency Award, New Agency of the Year Award, Best Counsellor of the Year Award (Male), and Best Counsellor of the Year Award (Female). Other categories of the awards were: Next Rated Counsellor of the Year Award, International Representative of the Year (Male), International Representative of the Year (Female), Next Rated International Representative of the Year Award, Best International Students Support Award, Most Impactful Overseas University Award, Most International University (Western Africa), Most International University (Eastern Africa), Most International University (Northern Africa), Most International University (Southern Africa), International School of the Year Award, and Pathway Provider of the Year Award. A.LeBron James and Rui Hachimura were home sick. Anthony Davis was in the back getting his injured ankle treated. D’Angelo Russell and Jaxson Hayes weren’t healthy enough to participate in a full practice. And still, there was optimism. Friday marked the beginning of a stretch when the Lakers can truly unpack and get comfortable, the rigors of the NBA and its travel schedule about to slow down for the longest stretch of their season. Beginning Saturday against Sacramento, 11 of their next 14 games are in Los Angeles. Ten will be at home (one will be the Lakers’ Intuit Dome debut against the Clippers). Heading into Friday’s games around the league, the Lakers have played a conference-high 17 road games, tied with the Jazz for most in the West. Only the Pistons and the Pacers have played more road games so far this year. “We’ve played together, tried to play the right way,” JJ Redick said after practice. “I think our game plan discipline has been really good. So I like where our team is at. I like where our team is trending. “I’m going to really like it when we’re completely healthy.” Hachimura and James are questionable Saturday because of illnesses. Davis will also be listed as questionable with the ankle injury he suffered in the first quarter on Christmas. He told The Times postgame that he expected to be “fine.” Russell, who missed that game against the Warriors, was able to take part in the non-contact portions of Friday’s practice with his sprained thumb and seems on track to return against the Kings And Hayes, who has played just once since Nov. 10 because of consecutive injuries to his right ankle, also participated in some of the non-contact portions of practice. He appears close to returning after Redick termed him “day to day.” Redick said Hayes “moved well” in practice Friday, the Lakers close to adding a dynamic big back to their bench lineups. “I think offensively for us, just the rim running, the pace with which he’s able to get from one action to the next as a big. He’s really good in the half court at screening, rolling, getting back to a second action. And (Russell), with some of the lob stuff, he just, he puts pressure on the rim as a roller,” Redick said of what the Lakers have missed without Hayes. “And then defensively, he had his best stretch for us prior to being injured. He had a four or five game stretch where he was great on both ends and he was also crashing. He was getting offensive rebounds for us. So we’ve missed him.” The Lakers don’t have timetables for Christian Wood and Jared Vanderbilt, who have both yet to play this year. However, Redick said he hoped both would be back during this stretch of home schedule. Asked about potential evaluations of the roster prior to the Feb. 6. trade deadline, Redick said he thinks a complete Lakers roster is good enough to fight. “Rob (Pelinka) and I, we talk all the time, but my focus is on coaching this group and trying to maximize this group,” Redick said. ‘Frankly, I have belief that when this group is healthy, we can compete. If there’s a move to be made, there’s a move to be made, but I’m focused on this group.”Jaipur: The Adivasi Aarakshan Manch (AAM), a coalition of tribal groups from southern Rajasthan, on Friday announced a rally in Dungarpur on Jan 6 to demand a 6.5% sub-quota within the existing 12% reservation for Scheduled Tribes (ST) in the state. The group further proposed reserving constituencies with 25% or higher ST population exclusively for ST candidates in the delimitation process set to begin in 2025. The AAM emphasised its stand against allowing non-ST candidates to contest from tribal-dominated districts such as Pratapgarh, Dungarpur, Banswara, and Udaipur, excluding Udaipur City. In reaction, the OBC Adhikar Manch countered the AAM demand by seeking urban assembly seats in TSP districts—Dungarpur, Banswara, Pratapgarh and Salumber—be reserved for OBC candidates. Kanakmal Katara, founder of the AAM, told TOI, "Successive govts failed to allocate the rightful share of reservation to tribal people living in TSP (Tribal Sub-Plan) areas. A significant portion of the 12% ST quota is taken by Meena communities in central and eastern Rajasthan. Tribal in TSP areas are now aware of their rights and will not remain silent until a 6.5% sub-quota is reserved for them." The rally is open to political functionaries from BJP, Congress and Bhartiya Tribal Party (BTP), with tribal people supporting the cause encouraged to join. "This is a community-driven program. We understand that achieving change requires political backing," Katara added. Sources confirmed that Banswara MP Rajkumar Roat (BTP) and BJP's Mahendrajeet Singh Malviya, a former minister, are likely to attend the rally. These politicians, alongside the Congress members, supported a prior meeting in Banswara in Nov. A BTP functionary said, "We will raise this issue in the budget session of the state assembly starting late Jan." The AAM urged tribal people to resist any attempt to declare non-tribal seats in TSP areas. However, Naresh Patel, coordinator of OBC Adhikar Manch, said, "OBCs are the second-largest group in TSP areas but have lacked representation, causing them to face numerous challenges. Chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma should uphold equality and ensure OBC representation from these regions." Stay updated with the latest news on Times of India .
