Millions of university graduates and students will soon wake up to an early Christmas present after the government wiped thousands of dollars off their debts. or signup to continue reading Laws to cap the indexation rate for the Higher Education Loan Program at either the rate of inflation or the wage price index - whichever is lowest - passed federal parliament late Tuesday night after Australians were stung with a 7.1 per cent increase to their student debts in 2023 because of surging inflation. The indexation changes will lead to $3 billion in debt being cleared over coming weeks. "University is a lot more expensive today than when I was at university," Education Minister Jason Clare told reporters in Canberra on Wednesday. "Wiping $3 billion in debt will fix that spike in inflation that happened last year and it'll make sure that never happens again." People with an average HELP debt level will get a $1200 reduction on their loans. Those with a debt of $45,000 will get a decrease of about $2000, while students with $60,000 owning will have debt lowered by $2700. The changes were recommended in the university accords, a review of the tertiary education sector handed down in February. The laws mean university students completing placement will receive payments to help with living costs from July 2025. Students in degrees including teaching, nursing, midwifery and social work will receive an allowance of $319 per week. The reforms were a big win for students and graduates at a time when many Australians were struggling with the high cost of living, Universities Australia chief executive Luke Sheehy said. Though universities have celebrated these measures, other government proposals for the sector have been widely spurned. Labor has attempted to implement a cap on the number of foreign student arrivals from 2025. The reform would be used in place of an immigration rule known as ministerial direction 107, that has throttled student visas. Swinburne University of Technology vice-chancellor Pascale Quester has urged the government to replace the ministerial direction and prioritise visa processing for enrolments in science, technology, engineering and mathematics courses - collectively known as STEM subjects. The number of domestic students taking these courses has dropped steadily, while international student interest has increased by 39 per cent since 2021. "Forget a brain drain, we are at risk of a brain drought," Professor Quester said. "There is so much STEM talent in the region, but we have slammed the door in their faces with hastily-crafted policy." The government is also expected to slash a further 20 per cent off Australians' student debt if it wins the federal election in 2025. DAILY Today's top stories curated by our news team. India News | People Have Once Again Endorsed PM Modi's Leadership, Development Vision: NaddaJohn Bolton , President-elect Donald Trump ’s former national security adviser , said that an international crisis is “much more likely” during the Republican’s second term. Bolton, who served as Trump’s national security adviser from 2018 to 2019, told The Guardian the president-elect has an “ inability to focus ” and bases his decisions on personal relationships and “neuron flashes.” “It’s typical Trump: it’s all braggadocio,” Bolton told the outlet. “The world is more dangerous than when he was president before. The only real crisis we had was COVID, which is a long-term crisis and not against a particular foreign power but against a pandemic.” “But the risk of an international crisis of the 19th-century variety is much more likely in a second Trump term,” he added. “Given Trump’s inability to focus on coherent decision-making, I’m very worried about how that might look.” The 76-year-old was no stranger to the defense world when he joined Trump’s administration. He served as Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security from 2001 to 2005 and Ambassador to the United Nations from 2005 to 2006. Bolton said he expected Trump to rise to the occasion during his first term, as many other presidents had done before him. “What I believed was that, like every American president before him, the weight of the responsibilities, certainly in national security, the gravity of the issues that he was confronting, the consequences of his decisions, would discipline his thinking in a way that would produce serious outcomes,” Bolton told The Guardian. “It turned out I was wrong,” he continued. “By the time I got there a lot of patterns of behaviour had already been set that were never changed and it could well be, even if I had been there earlier, I couldn’t have affected it. But it was clear pretty soon after I got there that intellectual discipline wasn’t in the Trump vocabulary.” Bolton previously slammed Trump’s cabinet picks as well, explaining he was likely selecting them based on loyalty rather than their philosophies or qualifications . “And the word loyalty is often used,” Bolton told CNN last month. “I think that’s the wrong word. Actually, I think what Trump wants from his advisors is fealty, really a futile sense of subservience.” “And you know, he may get that, but I will tell you that that will not serve him well over the course of his next term, and it certainly won’t serve the country well,” he continued. Bolton left Trump’s administration in September 2019, noting he left after months of disagreement with the Republican. Trump later claimed he fired Bolton. Since leaving his administration, Bolton has been an outspoken critic of Trump. In 2020, he published The Room Where it Happened: A White House Memoir , a scathing account of his experience serving in his first administration. “I don’t think he’s fit for office,” Bolton said during an interview with ABC News about the book’s release. “I don’t think he has the competence to carry out the job.”

Budget to withstand fiscal risks: MthuliNew Delhi, Nov 24 (PTI) India's 26 major listed real estate firms have sold properties worth nearly ₹ 35,000 crore during the September quarter with Godrej Properties reporting highest sales bookings. According to the data compiled from regulatory filings, the 26 major listed realty firms have reported a combined sales bookings of ₹ 34,985 crore in the second quarter of the current fiscal year. Bulk of pre-sales (sales bookings) came from residential segment. In terms of sales bookings, Godrej Properties emerged as the largest listed player during July-September quarter with pre-sales of ₹ 5,198 crore. Mumbai-based Macrotech Developers Ltd, which sells properties under the Lodha brand, reported sales bookings of ₹ 4,290 crore during the quarter under review. Delhi-NCR-based Max Estates sold properties worth ₹ 4,100 crore, while Bengaluru-based Prestige Estates Projects Ltd clocked sales bookings of ₹ 4,022.6 crore during the quarter. Delhi-NCR based Signature Global achieved sales bookings of ₹ 2,780 crore in the September quarter, driven by strong demand for its housing projects at Gurugram. DLF Ltd, the country's largest realty firm in terms of market capitalisation, sales bookings declined sharply during the July-September period to ₹ 692 crore as it did not launch any new housing project. Among other major listed players, Bengaluru-based Brigade Enterprises Ltd reported a sales bookings of ₹ 1,821 crore during July-September period of this fiscal year, while Mumbai-based Oberoi Realty did pre-sales of ₹ 1,442.46 crore. Mumbai-based Aditya Birla Real Estate sold properties worth ₹ 1,412 crore. Bengaluru-based Puravankara Ltd and Sobha Ltd clocked sales bookings of ₹ 1,331 crore and ₹ 1,178.5 crore, respectively. Delhi-based TARC Ltd also performed well and achieved pre-sales of ₹ 1,012 crore during the September quarter. There were many players that reported sales between ₹ 500 crore and ₹ 1,000 crore during the second quarter of this fiscal year. Pune-based Kolte-Patil Developers Ltd sold properties worth ₹ 770 crore, while Mumbai-based Keystone Realtors (Rustomjee brand) achieved pre-sales of ₹ 700 crore. Delhi-based Ashiana Housing Ltd reported sales bookings of ₹ 673 crore during the September quarter while Bengaluru-based Shriram Properties clocked pre-sales of ₹ 568 crore. Mumbai-based firms Raymond Ltd and Sunteck Realty Ltd sold properties worth ₹ 562 crore and ₹ 524 crore, respectively. Mumbai-based realtors Arihant SuperstructuresLtd, Ajmera Realty & Infrastructure Ltd and Arkade Developers Ltd reported sales bookings of ₹ 270.8 crore, ₹ 254 crore and ₹ 215 crore, respectively. Suraj Estate Developers sold properties worth ₹ 107 crore, while Lucknow-based Eldeco Housing & Industries Ltd clocked pre-sales of ₹ 102.9 crore. Mumbai-based Equinox India Developments Ltd (earlier Indiabulls Real Estate Ltd) achieved pre-sales of mere ₹ 98 crore during the second quarter of this fiscal year. Sales bookings of many listed entities have declined in the second quarter of 2024-25 because of inauspicious Shraadh period, monsoon rain and also lack of regulatory approvals to launch their projects. For example, DLF Ltd's pre-sales plunged to ₹ 692 crore in the September quarter from ₹ 6,404 crore in the first quarter of this fiscal. Sales bookings data of many listed players was not available on the stock exchanges. Post-Covid pandemic, the residential real estate segment has revived strongly because of pent-up demand growing desire to have homeownership. Housing prices too have appreciated significantly. Housing market is witnessing a shift in consumer demand towards those realty companies and brands which have better track record of executing real estate projects. Real estate developers, which are not listed on stock exchanges, generally do not report their quarterly and annual sales bookings. Branded and reputed players, including both listed and unlisted ones, have benefited most in this revival cycle as homebuyers do not want to take risk of getting stuck in real estate projects after making payments. Thousands of buyers of many NCR-based builders, like Unitech and Jaypee Infratech, are stuck and fighting legal cases in real estate regulatory authorities at the state-level, tribunals, and courts.Wireless Surgical Headlamps Market Outlook and Future Projections for 2030

ASHBURN, Va.— Former Atlanta Falcons coach Dan Quinn has the Washington Commanders rolling. The Falcons (8-7) are set to face the Commanders (10-5), one of the hotter teams in the NFL, at 8:20 p.m. ET Sunday at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Md., with NFC playoff implications on the line. The Commanders, who are led by rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, are coming off a 36-33 victory Sunday over the Eagles, which snapped their 10-game win streak. The Commanders still are in the hunt for the NFC East title, two games behind the Eagles (12-3) with two games to play. The Falcons are tied for the lead with the Bucs (8-7) in the NFC South. The Falcons hold the tiebreaker over the Bucs with two head-to-head wins. The Falcons need to beat Washington and then the Panthers in the regular-season finale to make it back to the playoffs for the first time since the 2017 season. Quinn, who was the Falcons coach from 2015-20, is one of two coaches to take the franchise to the Super Bowl. After he was fired five games into the 2020 season, Quinn was hired as Dallas’ defensive coordinator the next year. Quinn took over in Washington this season and is benefiting from the spectacular play of rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, a former Arizona State and LSU standout who was taken with the second overall pick in the NFL draft. “It’s been awesome,” Commanders backup quarterback Marcus Mariota, a former Falcon, said to The Atlanta Journal Constitution recently about playing for Quinn. “He is, honestly one of my favorites that I’ve ever played for. The energy and the culture he builds here is just very fun to be a part of. I’m really enjoying myself.” Daniels has completed 301 of 432 passes (69.7%) for 3,303 yards, 22 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He has a passer rating of 101.3. A crafty runner, Daniels also has rushed 128 times for 737 yards and six touchdowns. He’s a near lock for the Associated Press rookie-of-the-year award. “He’s done a great job,” Mariota said. “He’s deserves a lot of credit for how he’s come in. His demeanor and the way he works. I think that there are no surprises as to why he’s good.” Former Falcons wide receiver Olamide Zaccheaus caught five passes for 70 yards and two touchdowns Sunday. He also is a big supporter of Daniels. “It’s been great,” Zaccheaus told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “I think he’s handled a lot of things very, very well. ... It’s been cool to see. It’s great to play alongside of him. He’s just going to continue to grow as he gets more games under his belt.” Cornerback Marshon Lattimore, who was acquired in a trade with the Saints in early November, played in his second game for the Commanders in the win Sunday. He covered A.J. Brown and was called for three defensive pass-interference penalties. Quinn was fine with how Lattimore competed. “He has a real edge about him, a strength about him, and he really fits in well to how we want to play,” Quinn told Washington media members Monday. “So, I was pretty pumped to see him.” Lattimore likely will cover Falcons wide receiver Drake London, who’s 22 yards from his first 1,000-yard receiving season. Quinn has won over his locker room. “I’m grateful for DQ reaching out to me and bringing me in,” Zaccheaus said. “I know what he wants things to look like. I’m helping him build a culture here. We want to win. We are just building that culture day in and day out. I know what that should look like. I know what he wants it to look like. So, I’m just helping him do that.” Falcons coach Raheem Morris was on Quinn’s staff with the Falcons and took over as the interim head coach in 2020. He then went to the Rams and helped them win a Super Bowl as their defensive coordinator. He was hired in January to replace Arthur Smith. Morris and Quinn, while with the Rams and Cowboys, have faced each other before. “We played the Cowboys, I want to say twice,” Morris said. “It could be just once, but for sure once. They kicked our butts a bit last year.” The Cowboys won 43-20 on Oct. 29, 2023 at home. Both made their return to the head-coaching ranks this season from previous head coaching jobs. “Man, it’s always fun to play against your friends, your confidants, your mentors — whatever you want to look at it as — that we’ve been able to grow up with throughout this whole process,” Morris said. “You know, Dan coaching me in college (at Hofstra) and then having a chance to work together, then having a chance to really follow the same path to the National Football League.” ©2024 The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. A unique Christmas tree with over 150 illuminated crab pots stands tall at Prince Rupert’s Rushbrook Harbour. It highlights the importance of the local seafood industry in the North Coast’s social, cultural and economic landscape. The Area A Crab Association, Harbour Machining, Tourism Prince Rupert, and Port Edward Harbour Authority collaborated to build the tree to celebrate the community. “We love supporting everything that emphasizes the town’s rich fishery heritage and shows that our fishing industry here is still thriving,” said Port Edward Harbour Authority. Chelsey Ellis is the executive director of the Area A Crab Association, which represents 42 commercial crab fishing vessels and over 160 crew members that harvest Dungeness crab in “Area A” (Hecate Strait). She says Prince Rupert is home to B.C.’s largest Dungeness crab fishing vessels. These vessels operate in the notoriously rough waters of the Hecate Strait and range in size from 35ft to 62ft. Over 60 per cent of the province’s total Dungeness crab catch is harvested on the North Coast, with Prince Rupert and Port Edward as the main offloading hubs. Since 2016, an average of 10 million pounds of Dungeness crab has been landed annually in Prince Rupert and Port Edward. “We are really proud to be the Dungeness crab capital of Canada here in Prince Rupert,” said the Area A Crab Association. “This tree grew so far beyond what we originally envisioned due to the passion and energy that came from all the organizations coming together. The tree captures the essence of Prince Rupert and is so authentic to our coastal identity,” said Tourism Prince Rupert. This December is the first time residents of Rupert and the area can observe such a sight. “This year we wanted to help make the biggest and best Crab Trap Tree on the whole Pacific Coast,” said Harbour Machining. Lobster trap Christmas trees have been appearing along the East Coast of Canada and the U.S. since the early 2000s and have since made their way to the West Coast using crab pots. For this project, the collaborators sought inspiration from the Dungeness crab pot tree created by the Fishermen’s Wives of Humboldt in Humboldt Bay, California. “A coalition of like-minded organizations and commercial fishing industry partners has recently been formed to enhance local access to seafood and create new opportunities for our sustainable fisheries and aquaculture to become key elements of Prince Rupert’s tourism experience,” said Jaimie Angus, executive director of Tourism Prince Rupert. She adds that this crab tree marks the beginning of more festivals and activities, such as crab boils centred around local seafood. The coalition’s long-term goal is to maintain crab accessibility for everyone in restaurants and live tanks. The crab tree will remain at Rushbrook Harbour for visitors to enjoy until the first week of January.
AP Top 25: Alabama, Mississippi out of top 10 and Miami, SMU are in; Oregon remains unanimous No. 1Subhashree Sahu is set to make her mark in the upcoming web series ' The Worse of Social Side ', a compelling drama that delves into the adverse effects of social media on creators and users alike. The series, which will be available in Hindi and English, features Subhashree alongside other prominent artists and promises to shed light on the darker realities of the digital age. Her involvement in the series is particularly poignant, as she herself has been a victim of social media's harmful impacts. Once celebrated as the “Viral Girl Subhashree,” she faced a harrowing experience when AI-generated videos and photographs falsely attributed to her went viral, sparking relentless trolling and scrutiny. The content, which spread like wildfire across platforms, trended for nearly two months, leaving a significant dent in her personal and professional life. Speaking out against the malicious use of AI and the cyberbullying she endured, Subhashree’s attempts to defend herself were met with further challenges. Her social media accounts, including her Instagram , were banned after mass reporting campaigns staged by trolls. “The fame that comes with social media can often feel like a double-edged sword,” Subhashree remarked in a recent interview. “While it offers immense opportunities, it also exposes creators to unimaginable harassment and exploitation. I hope this series starts a conversation about the mental toll social media can have and encourages platforms to take stronger actions against cyberbullying.” 'The Worse of Social Side' explores themes of online trolling, the psychological effects of fame, privacy violations, and the misuse of AI technology in the digital era. The series seeks to offer a nuanced perspective on the trade-offs creators face in their quest for online visibility.
Israel cracks down on Palestinian citizens who speak out against the war in Gaza UMM AL-FAHM, Israel (AP) — In the year since the war in Gaza broke out, Israel's government has been cracking down on dissent among its Palestinian citizens. Authorities have charged Palestinians with “supporting terrorism” because of posts online or for demonstrating against the war. Activists and rights watchdogs say Palestinians have also lost jobs, been suspended from schools and faced police interrogations. Palestinians make up about 20% of Israel's population. Many feel forced to self-censor out of fear of being jailed and further marginalized in society. Others still find ways to dissent, but carefully. Israel's National Security Ministry counters that, “Freedom of speech is not the freedom to incite.” Israel says rabbi who went missing in the UAE was killed TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — Israel says the body of of an Israeli-Moldovan rabbi who went missing in the United Arab Emirates has been found, citing Emirati authorities. The statement from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office on Sunday said Zvi Kogan was murdered, calling it a “heinous antisemitic terror incident.” It said: “The state of Israel will act with all means to seek justice with the criminals responsible for his death." Kogan went missing on Thursday, and there were suspicions he had been kidnapped. His disappearance comes as Iran has been threatening to retaliate against Israel after the two countries traded fire in October. Israeli strikes in central Beirut kill at least 20 as diplomats push for a cease-fire BEIRUT, Lebanon (AP) — Lebanese officials say Israeli airstrikes have killed at least 20 people and injured dozens in central Beirut, as the once-rare attacks on the heart of Lebanon’s capital continue without warning. Diplomats are scrambling to broker a cease-fire but say obstacles still remain. The current proposal calls for a two-month cease-fire during which Israeli forces would withdraw from Lebanon and Hezbollah would end its armed presence along the southern border south of the Litani River. Lebanon’s Health Ministry says Israeli attacks have killed more than 3,500 people in Lebanon in the months of fighting that have turned into all-out war. After Trump's Project 2025 denials, he is tapping its authors and influencers for key roles WASHINGTON (AP) — During the campaign, President-elect Donald Trump had hailed what would become Project 2025 as a conservative roadmap for “exactly what our movement will do." Trump pulled an about-face when Project 2025 became a political liability. He denied knowing anything about the “ridiculous and abysmal” plans, even though some were written by his former aides and many allies. Now, after winning the 2024 election, Trump is stocking his second administration with key players in the effort he temporarily shunned. Trump has tapped Russell Vought for an encore as director of the Office of Management and Budget; Tom Homan, his former immigration chief, as “border czar;” and immigration hardliner Stephen Miller as deputy chief of policy. Trump's Republican Party is increasingly winning union voters. It's a shift seen in his labor pick WASHINGTON (AP) — Working-class voters helped Republicans make steady election gains this year and expanded a coalition that increasingly includes rank-and-file union members. It's a political shift spotlighting one of President-elect Donald Trump’s latest Cabinet picks: a GOP congresswoman, who has drawn labor support, to be his labor secretary. Oregon Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer narrowly lost her bid for a second term this month, despite strong backing from union members. They're a key part of the Democratic base but are gravitating in the Trump era toward a Republican Party traditionally allied with business interests. Forecasts warn of possible winter storms across US during Thanksgiving week WINDSOR, Calif. (AP) — Forecasters in the U.S. have warned of another round of winter weather that could complicate travel leading up to Thanksgiving. California is bracing for more snow and rain this weekend while still grappling with some flooding and small landslides from a previous storm. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for California's Sierra Nevada through Tuesday, with heavy snow expected at high elevations. Thousands remained without power in the Seattle area on Saturday after a “bomb cyclone” storm system hit the West Coast earlier in the week, killing two people. Parts of the Northeast and Appalachia also began the weekend with heavy precipitation. Pakistan partially stops mobile and internet services ahead of pro-Imran Khan protest ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistan says it is suspending mobile and internet services “in areas with security concerns” as supporters of imprisoned former premier Imran Khan gear up for a protest in the capital. The government and Interior Ministry made the announcement on X, which is banned in Pakistan. Sunday's protest is to demand Khan's release. He has been in prison for more than a year but remains popular. His supporters rely heavily on social media and messaging apps to coordinate with each other. Pakistan has already sealed off Islamabad and shut down major roads and highways connecting the city with Khan's power bases.
