DALLAS (AP) — Luka Doncic is returning to the Dallas lineup Monday night against the Portland Trail Blazers after missing the Mavericks’ two previous games with a left heel contusion. Doncic won last season’s scoring title with a career-best 33.9 points per game and is fifth in the NBA this season averaging 28.9, and seventh in assists, averaging 8.2. He had triple-doubles in three of his last four games, including his most recent appearance last Sunday with 45 points, 13 assists and 11 rebounds in a 143-133 win at Golden State. The defending Western Conference champions are 18-10, fourth in the West, and have won 13 of their last 16 games following their only losing streak of the season, a four-game skid from Nov. 8-14. ___ AP NBA: https://apnews.com/hub/nbaRevolutionising STEM Education With Innovative Digital Tools And Gamification

Robinhood Markets ( HOOD 3.76% ) , the online brokerage that popularized commission-free trading, went public in July 2021 at $38 a share. Its stock hit an all-time high of $70.29 less than a week later, but it dropped below $7 by the following June. Robinhood's stock plummeted as rising interest rates curbed the market's appetite for the higher-risk stocks, options, and cryptocurrencies that have driven most of its growth during the pandemic. However, its stock recovered over the following two years as interest rates peaked and investors poured more cash back into its platform. Robinhood's stock trades at about $36 as of this writing, which marks a five-bagger gain from its all-time low but still falls shy of its IPO price. Let's take a fresh look at its business and see where its stock might head over the next three years. What happened to Robinhood over the past few years? Robinhood's growth accelerated during the pandemic as social media buzz, stimulus checks, and a fear of missing out (FOMO) brought a stampede of investors to its commission-free trading platform. That buying frenzy, which lasted throughout most of 2020 and 2021, drove many meme stocks to their all-time highs. Robinhood went public near the peak of that buying frenzy. But in 2022, its growth in funded customers nearly stalled out, its number of monthly active users (MAUs) plummeted, and its assets under custody (AUC) shriveled as it attracted fewer net deposits during the market downturn. That decline can be largely attributed to rising interest rates, which chilled the market and drove investors toward more conservative investments. But in 2023 and 2024, its business stabilized with the broader market as investors focused on future interest rate cuts. Metric 2020 2021 2022 2023 9 months of 2024 Funded customers (in millions) 12.5 22.7 23 23.4 24.3 MAUs (in millions) 11.7 17.3 11.4 10.9 11 AUC (in billions) $63 $98 $62 $103 $152 Data source: Robinhood. Its MAUs remain below its pandemic-era peak, but its annualized average revenue per user (ARPU) rose 31% year over year to $105 in the third quarter of 2024. That's only slightly lower than its peak APRU of $115 back in the second quarter of 2020. That growth was fueled by the market's recovery and the expansion of its subscription-based Gold plan, which provides higher interest rates on uninvested cash, bonuses on taxable deposits and IRA contributions, bigger instant deposits, lower margin rates, access to Level II trading data, and other perks. Its number of Gold subscribers jumped 65% year over year to 2.2 million in the third quarter of 2024. Robinhood also turned profitable on a generally accepted accounting principles ( GAAP ) basis in the first nine months of 2024 as it cut costs and reined in its stock-based compensation. It even launched a $1 billion buyback plan earlier this year. What's next for Robinhood? Robinhood still faces stiff competition from traditional brokerages like Charles Schwab (NYSE: SCHW) and Morgan Stanley 's (NYSE: MS) E*Trade, which pivoted toward commission-free stock trades over the past few years. It also still generated 80% of its transaction revenue from riskier options and crypto trades instead of equities in its latest quarter, and that mix could exacerbate its volatility during a market downturn. Yet Robinhood's growth in funded customers remains stable, it's locking in more of its active users into its Gold plans, and it's increasing the stickiness of its ecosystem with more cash management and digital payment services. It's also tethering more users to its Robinhood Cash Card, a debit card that runs on Mastercard 's (NYSE: MA) payment network and provides cashback rewards with automatic investments. If the Fed continues to cut rates, investors will likely pour more cash into Robinhood and place more trades. However, the Federal Reserve recently projected it would make fewer rate cuts in 2025 unless inflation finally cooled off -- and that pressure could chill the market again and throttle Robinhood's growth over the next three years. Where will Robinhood's stock be in three years? From 2023 to 2026, analysts expect Robinhood's revenue to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 22%. On the bottom line, they expect it to stay profitable in 2024 and grow its net income at a CAGR of 8% over the following two years. Those growth rates seem steady, but they might disappoint investors who had hoped for an acceleration to its pandemic-era levels again. Its stock also isn't a screaming bargain at 42 times next year's earnings. Assuming it matches Wall Street's estimates, continues to grow its earnings per share at a CAGR of 8% from 2026 to 2028, and still trades at 40 times forward earnings, its stock could potentially rise nearly 20% over the next three years. That's a decent three-year gain, but it might not be worth the near-term risk. Investors can likely net similar gains with more conservative stocks, and Robinhood's stock could easily be cut in half again if the market crashes and crushes its valuations. From wealth and success to murder suspect, the life of Luigi Mangione took a hard turn

In this article, I comment on the recent podcast/video, “ What Should Trump Do About Energy Policy? ” below. I found it interesting to listen to, but I did have some issues with a few things, and maybe we can discuss them and both come away better informed. In the discussion of Chris Wright for the DOE pick, Adam expresses his pleasure at his fossil fuel background and support for nuclear. I used to have a significant part of my investment portfolio in oil investments and have always liked nuclear power. In 2014, I spent some time researching the possible threat to my oil investments posed by solar. I concluded that it was uncompetitive in most places unless heavily subsidized. But as a software engineer, I have followed the technology space and know that Moore’s Law has been very important the development of the whole computer industry. Moore’s Law is similar to Wright’s Law, which states, “price of production for a given product will go down a fixed amount [different for different products] every time the cumulative number of units doubles.” Of course, Wright’s Law isn’t a real law like the law of gravity, just a guideline that is useful — until it isn’t. The price of oil products in my lifetime has been volatile (mostly dependent on world geopolitical factors), but basically flat when adjusted for inflation. One of the two major factors over the last 50 years have been that we are running out of the cheap oil that is close to the surface on land, forcing us to either drill deeper or in harsh environments like deep seas or the arctic, increasing costs substantially. And the other major factor has been that technology innovation (primarily fracking to recover “tight” oil and gas) has dramatically increased supply, lowering costs dramatically, mostly in the US. The net effect is no change in real prices in 60 years. Solar PV has a dramatically different cost curve. There have been many articles on this, but I like this one because of the pretty graphs . The short version is that costs are more than 1000-fold over 40 years and continue to decline at an annual rate of 30% with no end in sight. In seeing this 10 years ago, I knew that would impact my investments, so I slowly rotated out of oil. I agree with Bob’s comments that we won’t run out of oil anytime soon. Stone Age didn't end because we ran out of stones Oil Age won't end due to lack of oil #RenewableEnergy will end it pic.twitter.com/QL3d2pz7d4 — Laudato Si' Movement (@LaudatoSiMvmt) May 11, 2016 I agree with @AlexEpstein that fossil fuels have tremendously improved human flourishing, but I disagree with him that it will continue far into the future in light of the dramatic technology changes, primarily in solar and electric vehicles, that are happening now. On nuclear, I have thought it to be a great low cost, reliable power source for many years that just needed less regulation and innovation to expand. But then I looked the cost curve of nuclear and found it has made no progress in 50+ years. This short video below convinced me I was wrong and I should not support nuclear for massive expansion for many reasons. New nuclear makes no economic sense at 30 times the cost of solar and getting worse every year. RethinkX has shown solar, wind, & batteries can supply reliable power 365 days a year. Unexpected problems are extremely costly and dramatically impact reliability. Nuclear can’t vary its output as market prices change. Currently, nuclear uses too much water, for example in France, where nuclear uses 50% of freshwater. In high temperatures (as is happening more often), nuclear has to shut down since its cooling water becomes harmful to the river’s ecosystem. Nuclear requires wealth & political stability to run safely. Today 32 countries have nuclear power and most of the other 163 countries can’t build it. Risks of nuclear proliferation 10-year build times (best case) is too long to meet our needs. Nuclear reactors use a lot of exotic materials that are possible but difficult to mine (similar to solar & EVs). Safety of transport and storage of nuclear waste is challenging. If we 40X nuclear power to power the future world with current accident rates, we would have 1 serious nuclear accident every month, and it needs to be 100 times safer to be acceptable Having said that, I don’t think there is any great need to shutdown existing nuclear, but the question is how much are you willing to use the force of government to subsidize it, since it can’t survive in most places without massive subsidies. My answer is a small amount, maybe $10 billion a year, declining over time. Bob is exactly right that liability caps are one of the significant subsidies that the government provides the nuclear industry. Adam is correct that new nuclear designs that are passively safe are much better because if something unexpected happens, they just shut down automatically without needing many skilled engineers with power and water available to safely shut down, like today’s plants. Michael Barnard has written many good articles on nuclear power , including how it isn’t compatible with Free Market Capitalism . In terms of the leasing discussion, federal lands should allow leasing of land for solar in addition to oil exploration. I disagree with Adam that wind and solar are mostly catastrophes. Although they are subsidized in many places, they are now competitive in more and more places without subsidies. The RethinkX article provides more background on both the reasonable costs and ability to efficiently deal with the intermittency problem by using the optimal combination of over-provisioning generation and installing batteries in 3 locations (California, Texas, and the Northeast). They predict this will happen without subsides, if not prevented by governments, and I agree. The existing oil industry will be asking for bailouts in the future, and would you use government force to bail out oil or coal? I do not. Obviously, today’s subsidies accelerate that trend. Tony Seba’s concept of Superpower (surplus electricity at far less than a penny a kWh, available most of the time) will be a boon to many new users of electricity, including the Bitcoin mining Bob mentioned. Bob is correct that fossil fuels are more dense than renewable energy or batteries, although this is changing over time. But I don’t know if renewable energy will ever catch up. This wasn’t part of the podcast, but I continue to be disappointed that the libertarian community has mostly ignored Murray Rothbard’s excellent “ The Libertarian Manifesto on Pollution .” It states that pollution is exacerbated by the lack of private property rights and how private suits by those harmed is a just solution instead of massive government intervention. Instead, most libertarians I know instead choose to ignore the problems. Walter Block has an interesting video (below) on this also. Realistically, we are a long way from enforcing private property rights to control pollution and carbon, so I think working within our existing model to make it as fair as possible is our best way forward. I encourage @Rerazer and @BobMurphyEcon to respond to this and tell me what they learned and what I got wrong. The NFC West is still an extremely close race after 12 weeks. The Arizona Cardinals held a slim lead over the division for multiple weeks, but surrendered it with their loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. The Cardinals and Seahawks are both 6-5 (Seattle holds the tiebreaker) while the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers are right behind at 5-6. There's still time for the Cardinals to make a playoff push, but there's a way they can ensure this close of a battle doesn't happen next year. Bleacher Report has the Cardinals going out and signing Kansas City Chiefs guard Trey Smith in the offseason to protect Kyler Murray. Arizona is projected to have $98 million in effective cap space next offseason, which means general manager Monti Ossenfort can splurge. He should take a long look at Kansas City Chiefs guard Trey Smith, the second-ranked player on the Bleacher Report 2025 free agent board. Smith has become a strong foundational piece of the Chiefs offense and a catalyst in the ground game. He could do the same for Arizona, which is establishing itself as a run-first team. This would be a solid move that will pay dividends for years to come in Arizona.

Rep. Susan Valdés, who was recently re-elected in November for her final term representing parts of the Tampa metropolitan area, announced her party switch in a post on X on Monday, insisting she would not “waste my final two years in the Florida Legislature being ignored in a caucus whose leadership expects me to ignore the needs of my community.” Valdés’ departure from the Democratic Party comes only one week after she lost an election for chair of the Hillsborough County Democratic Party, Florida House Minority Leader Fentrice Driskell said in her own statement slamming the move as a “bait-and-switch.” Before the election in November, Valdés was an outspoken critic of President-elect Donald Trump and attended local events for Kamala Harris, the Tampa Bay Times reported. She even penned an op-ed in the newspaper only a year earlier comparing the Republican-lead government of Florida to the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista in Cuba. Valdés seemed to address some of this disconnect in her statement on Monday, telling her constituents “I know I won’t agree with my fellow Republican House members on every issue, but I know that in their caucus, I will be welcomed and treated with respect.” See statement below... pic.twitter.com/JUVhsziSL7 The man arrested in connection with UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson’s killing last week looked directly into the camera for his mugshot after being taken into custody in Altoona, Pennsylvania Monday. Luigi Mangione was photographed after being escorted by cops to his preliminary arraignment in Hollidaysburg, less than 10 miles from the city of Altoona, where he was taken into custody. He was seen in the mugshot wearing a black scarf and coat, flashing a steely-eyed stare at the camera. After a tip from a McDonald’s worker in the city, police closed in and arrested Luigi Mangione. He has been charged with five crimes, including carrying a gun without a license, forgery, falsely identifying himself to the authorities and possessing “instruments of crime,” according to The New York Times . “Responding officers questioned the suspect, who was acting suspiciously and carrying multiple fraudulent IDs as well as a U.S. passport,” New York City Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch told reporters Monday. “Upon further investigation, officers recovered a firearm on his person, as well as a suppressor, both consistent with the weapon used in the murder.” Not everyone wants to be a tipsy elf during the holidays. Beyoncé ’s mom Tina Knowles has raised eyebrows by “liking” an Instagram post reporting that her son-in-law Shawn Carter (better known as Jay-Z ) had been named in a rape lawsuit involving a 13-year-old and incarcerated former mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs , according to Page Six . The Knowles matriarch was screenshotted having tapped the heart icon on the post by ABC7 Chicago, which had a photo of Combs and Jay-Z with the headline, “Jay-Z, Diddy Named In Lawsuit Alleging Rape of Girl, 13.” Page Six was able to verify that Knowles’ official Instagram account had liked the post, but could not reach her for comment. The unexpected social media move by Knowles follows years of her supporting her daughter’s marriage to the rapper in the press . It also follows the infamous Knowles family elevator fight in 2014, in which Beyoncé’s sister Solange attacked the rapper on an elevator with Beyoncé present. That incident was never addressed publicly by Jay-Z or the family. Jay-Z has responded to the rape allegations in the new lawsuit, however, with a public statement in which he called the suit a “ blackmail attempt ” by the plaintiff’s lawyer, Tony Buzbee, and vehemently denied the claims. Pope Francis has sparked a new wave of concern for his health after appearing with a black bruise and a swollen neck at a Vatican event. Francis, who turns 88 later this month, appeared at the ceremony Saturday to appoint new cardinals. The Vatican later said in a statement that Francis had a minor fall and hit his chin on the bedside table. At the ceremony, the pontiff did not appear affected by the injury. He has struggled with health issues in the past and currently uses a wheelchair because of knee and back pain. He was hospitalized earlier this year due to breathing issues and also underwent surgery to repair an abdominal hernia. Francis’ predecessor, Pope Benedict, relinquished his post in 2013 at the age of 85, citing declining health. Benedict was the first pope in 600 years to resign. Hope Walz claimed Joe Rogan fans are a relationship “red flag.” The 23-year-old daughter of Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz , shared her dating tip for screening men online with her nearly 200,000 followers on TikTok. “A litmus test for me and my friends for like years now has been if the guy we’re talking to follows Joe Rogan on Instagram, they’re a red flag and we should probably stop talking to them,” Walz said on Saturday. “And the times when they do follow him on Instagram and we haven’t stopped talking to them... it’s never ended well.” Rogan, a popular and controversial podcaster, hosts an eponymous show. Men make up 80 percent of his listeners. Walz’s anti-Rogan rule, she alleged has “never failed” her and her friends. “If they follow him we’re like, yeah, this person probably isn’t a great person and probably our values don’t align so we’re gonna move on from that. And honestly it’s worked out well for all of us.” Ahead of the 2024 presidential election, Rogan hosted Donald Trump on his show, alongside a slew of MAGA loyalists. Ultimately the podcaster endorsed Trump over Kamala Harris and Walz’s father. A private funeral was being held on Monday for murdered UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson as police detained a suspect in the case, a source familiar with the family’s plans told NBC News . The suspect was first caught on surveillance cameras in Manhattan , and had evaded a massive police search. However, Pennsylvania police said they had detained a 26-year-old who was caught with a gun similar to the one used in the shooting. Investigators believe he was in the city for 10 days before the shooting, at one point lifting his mask to speak to a hostel employee. A photo from the camera capturing that moment has been circulated worldwide. Only Murders in the Building landed Golden Globe Award nominations for its three big stars—Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez—on Monday. But missing from the list was their supporting co-star Meryl Streep , who failed to extend her streak as the most nominated actor in the award show’s 80-year history. Streep, who plays Short’s on-screen (and possibly off-screen?) love interest, earned her 33rd Golden Globe nomination last year for Best Supporting Actress on the Hulu comedy. Gomez was a double nominee for her role in the Netflix film Emilia Pérez , which led in overall nominations with 10, followed by The Brutalist with seven and Conclave with six. Other big snubs included directors John M. Chu for Wicked: Part One and Denis Villeneuve for Dune: Part Two . Pamela Anderson was a surprise Best Actress nominee for The Last Showgirl , which the Baywatch star is hoping could lead to an Oscar nomination in the new year. President-elect Donald Trump launched a baffling claim Monday that " Democrats are fighting hard to get rid of the Popular Vote in future Elections." In a post on his Truth Social network, he added: “They want all future Presidential Elections to be based exclusively on the Electoral College !” In fact, the popular vote has in recent decades heavily favored Democrats and, this year, Trump became the first Republican to win the popular vote in 20 years. Democratic candidates have won the popular vote in five of the seven presidential elections in the 21st Century, losing two of those elections to Republicans who got fewer votes on a national level. Not only is there no Democratic effort to shore up the Electoral College, many prominent Democrats— including the party’s 2016 nominee for president Hillary Clinton , who won more votes than Trump but lost the Electoral College—have argued in favor of a popular vote for president. It is very likely that Trump and George W. Bush , who lost the 2000 popular vote to Al Gore, would have never been elected president were it not for the Electoral College. The jury acquitted Penny of criminally negligent homicide, after throwing out the manslaughter charge on Friday when the jury twice couldn’t come to a unanimous verdict. The charge of criminally negligent homicide would’ve put Penny behind bars for four years; the manslaughter charge had a maximum of 15 years. Penny, a former Marine, put Neely, who was homeless at the time, in a chokehold for six minutes after Neely said, “someone is going to die today,” in May 2023. No witness testified that Neely touched or made any move towards another passenger, though many testified that they were afraid of Neely during his rant. He did not have a weapon on him. Prosecutors noted that Penny kept Neely in the chokehold even after the passengers had left the train. But jurors sided with Penny’s defense—that he was justified in protecting his fellow passengers in the face of an erratic homeless man, who had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and previously had over two dozen encounters with the police. The defense also questioned if it was the chokehold that killed Neely. A famously lanky English soccer legend has cast his verdict on Barron Trump’s skills after a clip of the 18-year-old playing went viral again. Peter Crouch became a household name in England for his exploits on the pitch, and for his comical appearance. Crouch, now retired, towered over his opponents quite like a young Barron, who was seen playing the sport in a resurfaced clip that is doing the rounds again. In it, Barron—who is now 6-foot-9, dwarfs the other kids on the pitch as he shows off an impressive array of skills. On X, Crouch shared the clip Sunday and simply said: “Baller.” Barron is reportedly soccer mad , and instead of boozing and chasing girls at college he spends his time playing the soccer game FC25, formerly known as FIFA. He also rubbed shoulders with another former England star, Wayne Rooney, when the Manchester United legend was managing D.C. United in the MLS. “(Donald) asked me to give his son football lessons,” Rooney said. Resurfaced video shows Barron Trump playing soccer. pic.twitter.com/Ew2DkUPFUI

Read unlimited articles for free today: Already have an account? BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana’s Republican-controlled Legislature approved a constitutional amendment on Friday that would allow them to expand the number of crimes in which juveniles between 14 and 16 years old could be tried as adults. The state’s constitution currently outlines 15 violent juvenile offenses, such as rape, murder and armed robbery, which prosecutors can handle in adult courts. Any changes to that list of crimes must be approved by voters. But the constitutional amendment sponsored by Republican Sen. Heather Cloud — which require voter approval in March 29 elections to take effect — would allow legislators the power by a two-thirds vote to decide what juvenile crimes can be transferred to adult courts. It’s part of a wider push in Louisiana, which already has the second-highest incarceration rate in the country behind Mississippi, to implement tough-on-crime policies under Republican Gov. Jeff Landry. Since taking office in January, Landry has passed laws to treat 17-year-olds as adults in the criminal justice system, largely eliminate parole and allow surgical castration as punishment for certain sex crimes against children. Supporters of the measure to make it easier to expand prosecution of juveniles as adults — backed only by Republican legislators — say it will grant lawmakers more flexibility to give prosecutors the tools they need to increase public safety. Vesting authority in the constitution “has hamstringed Louisiana from being able to address changes in an ever-changing juvenile crime landscape,” Cloud said on the Senate floor on Nov. 14. Opponents, including Democrats, social workers and criminal justice reform advocates, said specific offenses routing juveniles to adult courts should remain part of the constitution to keep this power in the hands of voters. “We’re taking the people’s voice away over how children should be treated in this state,” Democratic Sen. Katrina Jackson-Andrews said. Critics also argue the changes fail to confront the root causes of juvenile crime, namely poverty and underinvestment in education. Transferring juveniles into adult court would also prevent them from accessing age-appropriate rehabilitative services, criminal justice reform advocates and social workers testified during the legislative session. “I can view this in no other way than just giving up on children,” Democratic Sen. Royce Duplessis said on the Senate floor. “We’re going to say we’re just going to treat them all as adults, and we’re not going to do our part as a society, as policymakers, to address what’s really failing — this is not going to do a single thing to deter crime.” Some lawmakers said that juveniles committing violent crimes had been deprived of care from a young age and were past the point of rehabilitation, blaming their families as opposed to societal factors. “Some of these kids are already lost when they’re 2 years old,” said Republican Rep. Tony Bacala in a House committee hearing. Unless they are transferred to an adult court, young people tried in juvenile court can only be imprisoned until age 21 according to state law. The effect of the proposed constitutional change will be to open the door for Republican lawmakers to give prosecutors the power to hand down lengthy prison sentences to 14- to 16-year-olds, including for less severe crimes, said Bruce Reilly, deputy director of the Louisiana-based criminal justice reform advocacy group Voice of the Experienced. The Louisiana District Attorneys Association and the Louisiana Sheriffs’ Association said they supported the measure. But New Orleans Sheriff Susan Hutson said she was concerned the measure would “almost certainly further strain our already short staff” in the jail system. Federal law still considers 17-year-olds and younger as juveniles and requires them to be kept separate from adult inmates. District Attorney Tony Clayton, who represents West Baton Rouge and two other parishes, said he would not try a juvenile as an adult for having “marijuana in his wallet,” but for violent crimes. Violent crimes are on the decline nationwide according to the latest data from FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting. Since mid-2023, most violent crime has also been down in New Orleans, which in 2022 had the highest homicide rate among large cities nationwide. Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. Conservative lawmakers argued this was the result of tough-on-crime penalties passed this year and Republican Gov. Jeff Landry’s decision to send state troops to New Orleans. Lawmakers supporting the amendment have focused on high-profile violent crimes by juveniles, such as a deadly New Orleans carjacking case committed by teenagers — who were charged as adults — in which an elderly woman was beaten and dragged to her death. Louisiana is one of five states that classifies 17-year-olds as adults in the criminal justice system, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. _____ Brook is a corps member for The Associated Press/Report for America Statehouse News Initiative. Mononymous painter Bruce has carved a lucrative niche on social media with his abstract artworks, crafted entirely from the colourful juices of fruits. He has garnered over 37.1K Instagram followers, and is revelling in a wave of Tumblr fame. His works - vivid, contemporary, bold - have been published across two separate books. Bruce, aged 17, is also a parrot. The green-and-blue patched parrotlet is one of ten birds to gain online fame after their owner, Vancouver resident Tina Kirmis, began posting videos and meme-worthy photographs of her feathered friends to Instagram page @follow_the_feather . Among them were videos of Bruce in his ‘berry-eating dome’, a glass structure designed by Kirmis to protect her kitchen walls from the bird’s messy eating habits. Videos show Bruce demolishing his berries with such gusto that bits splatter around the dome, leaving Jackson Pollock-esque paintings on the sheet of paper she leaves underneath. People “just can’t get enough” of the videos, says Kirmis, and Bruce, unbeknownst to him, has become a breakout star. To date, Kirmis has been an adopted mother to 17 different birds. A post shared by Follow the Feathers (@follow_the_feathers) As a volunteer with Vancouver’s GreyHaven Exotic Bird Sanctuary, she says she finds it heartbreaking leaving behind the orphaned creatures - especially when it's the raggedy few. “I’m a sucker for the ones without feathers,” she says, reeling off the ten winged roommates she currently shares her apartment with. There are five budgies, two cockatiels, two parrotlets, and a 50-year-old Amazon parrot, named Sonny. They all fly and they all, much to people’s surprise, says Kirmis, have their own personalities. A budgie named Betty is the feistiest of the lot - “she was so mean, I actually had to wear a jean jacket, a scarf, and safety glasses when I let her out” - although she’s simmered down in recent years. Budgies Betty and Barney are in the middle of a blossoming love affair. Mildred, a parrotlet, is “the boss”, despite her miniature size. Winston, who was adopted as a friend for Willie, prefers human companionship. All he wants to do, says Kirmis, “is snuggle.” Then, of course, there’s Bruce, the social media influencer. Mukbang star. Artist. Philanthropist. (His books, ‘Bruce's Berry Good Art’ and ‘Bruce In His Berry Eating Dome’, raise funds for bird sanctuaries GreyHaven and The Nest.) “It’s kind of like a soap opera, with so many things going on among all the birds,” Kirmis laughs. Kirmis says she began the social media account in jest to showcase the funny side of bird ownership to close friends, but as the fans accumulated, she saw the opportunity to teach possible pet owners a valuable lesson. The majority of Kirmis’ flock are rescues and all of them have pretty significant health issues. Owning a bird, she says, - regardless of how small it may be - is no walk in the park. “I haven’t been on vacation since 2010,” she laughs, “my vet bills last year were literally the same as my rent.” Bruce, who was adopted into the home eight years ago, has heart and liver issues and cataracts in both eyes. Sonny, who is 50 but still surprisingly young for his species, can no longer fly or perch and has eight medications a day. He’s still very much content with life however, assures Kirmis, given his regularly exercised hobbies of playing with toys, eating, and receiving head scratches. “The level of care can be a lot. They’re little family members, so you have to keep them and care for them like the precious little things that they are,” she says. The flock requires food once a day and fresh water multiple times a day. Areas of the house have had to be bird-proofed - the legs of a dining room table, victim to one bird’s incessant pecking, now has to wear socks. Even bedtime, she adds, is no longer her own choice. “They all go to bed at 7:30 p.m., and then I’m kicked out of the living room.” Kirmis’ blames her fondness for fowl on the first ever bird she owned, a budgie, bought in 2003, named Elvis. The “smartest, coolest little bird you could ever meet,” she says it was his loveable, animated character that had encouraged her to continue adding to her ever-growing flock. Twenty-one years and 17 birds later, Kirmis insists that she doesn’t have favourites. All ten are loved equally, artistic ability or not.

Brian Bradshaw Sevald-USA TODAY Sports/File Photo The Philadelphia Phillies signed two-time All-Star closer Jordan Romano to a one-year contract on Monday. Financial terms were not disclosed, but ESPN and The Athletic reported the deal was worth $7.75 million. The 31-year-old right-hander was non-tendered by Toronto earlier this offseason. The Phillies bolstered their bullpen after Jeff Hoffman and Carlos Estevez hit free agency. Romano went 1-2 with a 6.59 ERA in 15 relief appearances with the Blue Jays in 2024. Romano battled injuries last season and underwent season-ending right elbow surgery in July. He saved 36 games in 2022 and 2023, earning All-Star nods in each season. Overall, Romano is 20-17 in 231 career relief appearances with 105 saves and a 2.90 ERA. --Field Level Media REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.
